The verse — decoded
L1definition
bījatvād bījam ādau syāt phalatvāt kāryam antataḥ |
bījatvātbecause it is the seed ablative of reason — its being the bīja is why it takes the place named nextक्योंकि वह बीज है — इसी कारण उसे आगे बताया गया स्थान मिलता है
bījamthe bīja, the seed of the whole plotबीज (कथावस्तु का मूल अंकुर)
ādauat the very beginning locative of place in the play's courseनाटक के आरम्भ में
phalatvātbecause it is the fruit ablative of reason, parallel to bījatvātक्योंकि वह फल है — बीज के समान ही यह भी कारण बताता है
kāryamthe kārya, the final result the action grows towardकार्य (परिपक्व फल, जिस तक कथा पहुँचती है)
antataḥat the endअन्त में
bījatvāt — because it is the seed; bījam — the bīja; ādau — at the very beginning; syāt — should be set; phalatvāt — because it is the fruit; kāryam — the kārya, the final result; antataḥ — at the end.
The bīja is the seed of the whole plot. Because that is what it is, it belongs at the very beginning. The kārya is the fruit that all the action grows toward. Because that is what it is, it comes last, at the end.
bīja and kārya are two of the five artha-prakṛtis, the plot-elements that carry a play's action. bīja is the seed idea from which the plot unfolds; kārya is the ripe result it finally reaches.
L2definition
tayoḥ sandhāna-hetutvān madhye binduṁ muhuḥ kṣipet ||
tayoḥof the two — the seed and the fruit genitive; refers back to bīja and kārya of L1उन दोनों का (पूर्व पंक्ति के बीज और कार्य का)
sandhāna-hetutvātbecause it is what joins those two together ablative of reason — its joining function is why it goes where the line saysक्योंकि वह दोनों को जोड़ने का कारण है — इसी से उसका स्थान निश्चित होता है
muhuḥagain and againबार-बार
kṣipethe should cast inडालता रहे / रखता रहे
tayoḥ — of the two, seed and fruit; sandhāna-hetutvāt — because it is what joins them together; madhye — in the middle; binduṁ — the bindu; muhuḥ — again and again; kṣipet — he should cast in.
The bindu is what keeps the seed and the fruit connected across the play. Because joining those two is its job, the playwright should keep dropping it in through the middle, again and again.
bindu, 'the drop', is a third artha-prakṛti. Like a drop of oil that spreads across water, it keeps the main aim alive whenever a side-matter interrupts the plot — hence muhuḥ, 'again and again', through the middle stretch.
bījatvāt bījam ādau syāt, phalatvāt kāryam antataḥ [syāt], tayoḥ sandhāna-hetutvāt madhye binduṁ muhuḥ kṣipet.
bījatvāt bījam ādau syāt, phalatvāt kāryam antataḥ (syāt); tayoḥ sandhāna-hetutvāt binduṁ madhye muhuḥ kṣipet।
Because it is the seed of the whole plot, the bīja should be set at the very beginning; because it is the ripe fruit toward which all the action grows, the kārya should come at the very end; and because the bindu is what joins those two — seed and fruit — across the play, the playwright should keep casting it in through the middle, again and again.
Rūpa's defining kārikā placing three of the five artha-prakṛtis by their nature: bīja at the start, kārya at the close, bindu recurring through the middle.
