yathāyogaṁ patākāyāḥ prakaryāś ca niveśanam ||
yathāyogaṁwherever each best fits — placed to suit the action, with no fixed slot avyayībhāva adverb (yathā 'according to' + yoga 'fitness'); qualifies niveśanam — the whole point of the ruleजैसा उचित हो वैसा — यथायोग्य, प्रत्येक नाटक की स्थिति के अनुसार; यह अव्यय पूरे विधान का मर्म है और 'निवेशन' का विशेषण है
patākāyāḥof the patākā — the extended sub-plot that runs through much of the play gen. sg., objective genitive with niveśanam ('the placing of the patākā')पताका का — 'निवेशन' के साथ कर्म के अर्थ में षष्ठी, अर्थात् पताका का स्थापन
prakaryāḥand of the prakarī — the shorter, incidental episode gen. sg., paired with patākāyāḥ under the same niveśanamप्रकरी का — उसी 'निवेशन' के अधीन पताका के साथ जुड़ी हुई षष्ठी
caand — joining the two elements that share this ruleऔर — पताका तथा प्रकरी दोनों का समुच्चय करता है
niveśanamis where they are set in — the placing of them [is to be done] neut. nom., verbal noun as predicate; supply 'is to be made'स्थापन (करना चाहिए) — नपुंसक कर्तृवाच्य का क्रियारूपी नाम, यहाँ विधेय है; 'करना चाहिए' अध्याहार करें
patākāyāḥ prakaryāḥ ca — of the patākā and the prakarī; niveśanam — the placing; yathāyogaṁ — [is to be done] wherever each best fits.
This finishes the rules for where the plot-elements go. The last kārikā fixed three of them: the bīja opens the play, the kārya closes it, and the bindu is dropped in again and again through the middle. The patākā and the prakarī get no fixed position. Rūpa's rule for them is just yathāyogam — place each one wherever it best fits the action.
The patākā and the prakarī are the third and fourth of the five arthaprakṛtis (plot-elements, the 'means' by which the action reaches its goal — bīja, bindu, patākā, prakarī, kārya). The two are distinguished by reach: a patākā is a full sub-plot, an episode with its own minor hero (patākā-nāyaka) whose story runs alongside and helps the main plot over a large stretch of the play, and which may carry its own small reward; a prakarī is a briefer incident, brought in for one limited purpose and then dropped, without an extended arc of its own. Because their length and role vary from play to play, they cannot be pinned to a set spot the way the bīja (start), kārya (end), and bindu (recurring, middle) are — hence the open rule yathāyogam, 'as fits.'
patākāyāḥ prakaryāḥ ca niveśanam yathāyogaṁ [kāryam]
The setting-in of the patākā and the prakarī is to be done as each best fits — each placed wherever it suits the action, with no fixed slot in the play.
Closing kārikā on the placement of the arthaprakṛtis: unlike the bīja, kārya, and bindu, the patākā and prakarī get no fixed position — Rūpa's rule for them is simply yathāyogam, 'wherever each fits.'
