nāyakārthaṁ kṛdaṅgaṁ syāt nāyaketara-ceṣṭitam |
nāyaka-arthaṁin order to serve the hero's aim — done to advance the nāyaka's own purpose accusative used adverbially, of purpose ('for the sake of')नायक के प्रयोजन के लिए (क्रिया-विशेषण के रूप में द्वितीया, 'नायक के हेतु')
kṛtcarrying it out — the action that effects that aim (taken in compound as kṛd-aṅgaṁ) kṛt, 'doing / effecting'; t → d before the vowel in kṛd-aṅgaṁकरने वाला, साधने वाला — कृत् (स्वर के पूर्व त् का द् होकर कृद्-अंग)
aṅgaṁ syātshould count as an aṅga, a subsidiary member of the plot aṅgaṁ predicate nominative neuter; syāt optative of definition, 'should be [called]'अंग होना चाहिए — अंग यहाँ नपुंसक विधेय, तथा 'स्यात्' परिभाषा का विधिलिङ् ('कहलाता है')
nāyaka-itara-ceṣṭitamnamely, the conduct of one other than the hero — what a character who is not the nāyaka does nominative neuter, standing as the subject that aṅgaṁ is predicated of; nāyaka-itara = 'other than the hero'नायक से भिन्न किसी की चेष्टा — यही कर्ता जिसका अंग विधान होता है; नायक-इतर अर्थात् नायक से अन्य
nāyaka-itara-ceṣṭitam — the conduct of one other than the hero; nāyaka-arthaṁ — in order to serve the hero's aim; kṛt — carrying it out; aṅgaṁ syāt — should count as an aṅga, a subsidiary member.
Now Rūpa defines the aṅga, the subsidiary member of the plot. When some character other than the hero acts, and that action works toward the hero's own aim, that action is an aṅga. So the aṅga is the conduct of a non-hero, a secondary character, that still serves the hero's goal.
aṅga, 'limb, subsidiary member,' is the subordinate plot-strand, set against the pradhāna (principal action) defined in the previous kārikā (5.8), where the pradhāna was the hero's own pervasive conduct. Here the flip side: an aṅga is the doing of a character other than the hero (nāyaka-itara) which nonetheless feeds the hero's aim. In classical dramaturgy this is the incidental or episodic strand — a secondary agent pursuing his own affair in a way that advances the main hero's purpose.

bīja-ādayaḥthe bīja and the rest — bīja, bindu, and kārya, the elements belonging to the principal action nominative plural; bīja-ādi, 'bīja etc.'
kvacitonly sometimes — counting as aṅga in some cases but not always adverb, answering nityaṁ; the contrast is the point of the lineकहीं-कहीं, कदाचित् — 'नित्य' का उत्तर देने वाला; यही विरोध पंक्ति का मर्म है
patākā prakarī ca — the patākā and the prakarī; nityaṁ — always; aṅgaṁ [syāt] — are subsidiary members; bīja-ādayaḥ — the bīja and the rest; kvacit — only sometimes.
Which of the plot-elements are aṅga? The patākā and the prakarī, the two incidental subplots, are always subsidiary members. The bīja, bindu, and kārya (the 'bīja and the rest') are aṅga only sometimes. This is because those three chiefly belong to the principal action, so they serve as subsidiary members only in particular cases.
The five arthaprakṛti (plot-elements) are bīja, bindu, patākā, prakarī, and kārya. Rūpa here sorts them by whether they function as aṅga (subsidiary): patākā and prakarī, being the episodic strands, are always subsidiary; bīja, bindu, and kārya, which drive the main plot, are subsidiary only occasionally. The neuter predicate aṅgaṁ from the first clause is supplied again for bīja-ādayaḥ.
nāyaka-itara-ceṣṭitam nāyaka-arthaṁ kṛt [sat] aṅgaṁ syāt; patākā prakarī ca nityaṁ aṅgaṁ [syāt], bīja-ādayaḥ [tu] kvacit [aṅgaṁ syāt].
nāyaka-arthaṁ kṛt nāyaka-itara-ceṣṭitam aṅgaṁ syāt; patākā prakarī ca nityaṁ (aṅgaṁ), bīja-ādayaḥ kvacit (aṅgaṁ syuḥ)।
When a character other than the hero acts, and that action works toward the hero's own aim, that action should count as an aṅga — a subsidiary member of the plot. Among the plot-elements, the patākā and the prakarī, the two episodic subplots, are always such subsidiary members; but the bīja, the bindu, and the kārya (the 'bīja and the rest'), since they chiefly drive the principal action, count as aṅga only sometimes.
A definition-kārikā: it defines the aṅga (subsidiary plot-member) as a non-hero's conduct that serves the hero's aim, then sorts the five arthaprakṛti — patākā and prakarī always aṅga, bīja/bindu/kārya only occasionally.
