The verse — decoded
L1definition
pāñcavidhyāt kathāyās tu prakṛtiḥ pañcadhā smṛtā |
pāñcavidhyātbecause the plot comes in five kinds ablative of cause; pāñca-vidhya = 'fivefoldness', the state of being of five sorts — this is the reason prakṛti too is fivefoldक्योंकि कथा का पाँच प्रकार का होना ही कारण है
kathāyāḥof the story, the plot-matter of the drama gen. depending on pāñcavidhya — it is the kathā that comes in five kindsकथा की (जिसका यह पाँच प्रकार का होना है)
tunow — turning to prakṛti as the fresh topicतो, इसी कारण
prakṛtiḥprakṛti, the plot-element — the constituent that drives the action forwardप्रकृति (अर्थात् अर्थप्रकृति, कथा के वे मूल अंग)
smṛtāis taught, is handed down in the traditionमानी गई है, कही गई है
pāñcavidhyāt kathāyāḥ tu prakṛtiḥ pañcadhā smṛtā — Because the story comes in five kinds, prakṛti is taught to be fivefold.
Now Rūpa turns to prakṛti, the constituent element of a plot. His reasoning is simple: the kathā — the story-matter a drama sets out to tell — unfolds in five kinds. So its prakṛti is likewise handed down as fivefold. There are five plot-elements, and the next line names them.
prakṛti here is the arthaprakṛti of dramaturgy — the 'elements of the matter,' the five constituents through which a plot advances toward its goal. In the previous kārikā (5.1) Rūpa defined the sandhi as the joining of each stage (avasthā) of the action with one of these prakṛtis; here he lists what the five prakṛtis are.

bījaṁ binduḥ patākā ca prakarī kāryam eva ca ||
bījamthe bīja, the 'seed' — the firstबीज (आरम्भ में संक्षेप से कहा गया मूल कारण)
binduḥthe bindu, the 'drop' — the secondबिन्दु
patākā caand the patākā, the 'banner' — a fully drawn secondary episode; the thirdऔर पताका
prakarīthe prakarī, a brief incidental episode — the fourthप्रकरी
kāryam eva caand the kārya itself, the main goal the plot aims at — the fifth eva marks it off as the culminating one — the very end for whose sake the rest existऔर कार्य ही — वही अन्तिम लक्ष्य, जिसके लिए शेष चारों हैं
bījam binduḥ patākā ca prakarī kāryam eva ca — the bīja, the bindu, the patākā, the prakarī, and the kārya itself [are the five].
Here are the five, in order. First the bīja, the seed — the small cause from which the whole action grows. Second the bindu, the drop — what carries the action across when it threatens to break off. Third the patākā, the banner — a secondary storyline drawn out at length. Fourth the prakarī — a short incidental episode. And fifth the kārya itself, the main goal for whose sake everything else is set in motion. These are the five prakṛtis of a plot.
The five, in the standard nāṭya-śāstra sense: bīja is the seed-cause, briefly stated at the outset, from which the whole action later spreads; bindu is the 'drop' that rejoins the thread of the main action whenever it is interrupted; patākā is a well-developed subsidiary plot running alongside the main one; prakarī is a minor episode of limited scope; and kārya is the final aim the entire plot works toward. The word eva on kārya marks it as the goal that gives the other four their purpose.
kathāyāḥ pāñcavidhyāt tu prakṛtiḥ pañcadhā smṛtā; [sā ca] bījam binduḥ patākā ca prakarī kāryam eva ca [iti pañcavidhā].
kathāyāḥ pāñcavidhyāt tu prakṛtiḥ pañcadhā smṛtā; bījaṁ binduḥ patākā ca prakarī kāryam eva ca (iti tāḥ pañca prakṛtayaḥ)।
Now, because the story-matter (kathā) itself unfolds in five kinds, the prakṛti — the plot-element that drives the action forward — is handed down in the tradition as likewise fivefold; and these five are the bīja, the 'seed' from which the whole action grows; the bindu, the 'drop' that rejoins the thread whenever it is broken off; the patākā, the 'banner,' a fully developed secondary storyline; the prakarī, a brief incidental episode; and the kārya itself, the very goal for whose sake the other four are set in motion.
A definition kārikā (lakṣaṇa): it establishes that the arthaprakṛtis are five and, in the second pāda, names them in order — bīja, bindu, patākā, prakarī, kārya — the constituents through which a plot advances, following on the sandhi definition of 5.1.
