tat — that device; purānurodhāt — because it keeps in step with what has gone before; budhaiḥ — by the learned; nāmnā — under the name; avagalitam — 'avagalita'; jñeyam — is to be recognized.
Because this device works by falling in line with the earlier action — riding on what precedes it — the learned know it by a name. They call it avagalita.
The verse names the aṅga avagalita; the standard dramaturgical term, and this unit's own heading, is avalagita — the two are the same limb, the syllables -laga-/-gala- swapped by metathesis.
yatra ekasmin [kārye] samāveśya anyat kāryam prasādhyate, pura-anurodhāt tat budhaiḥ nāmnā avagalitam [iti] jñeyam.
When you fold the matter in hand into one single action, and by that same stroke a further, separate purpose is also brought fully about, then — since the device works by falling in line with what has gone before — the learned should recognize it under the name avagalita.
Defines the sandhy-aṅga avalagita (here named avagalita): one action carried through so that finishing it also accomplishes a second purpose, riding on the earlier matter.
