The verse — decoded
L1example
naṭatā kirāta-rājaṁ nihatya raṅga-sthale kalānidhinā |
naṭatābecause he is dancing (instr., agent) — the master-actor plying his art; on the second reading, the moon moving on its course instr. agent going with kalānidhinā; naṭ- carries both 'to dance/act' and 'to move (across the sky)'नाचते/अभिनय करते हुए — जो साथ ही आकाश में गति भी कर रहा है — उसके द्वारा (कलानिधि के साथ जुड़ता कर्तृवाचक तृतीया)
kirāta-rājaṁthe Kirāta king (acc.) — the one marked for the blow to comeकिरातों के राजा को (कर्म; यह नाम भी दो स्तरों पर चलता है)
nihatyahaving struck him down — slain on stage; and, in the sky, an adverse influence overcomeमारकर / परास्त करके
raṅga-sthaleon the stage-floor (loc.) — the theatre's arena; also the arena of the skyरंगमंच पर — अथवा अखाड़े/रणभूमि में (सप्तमी)
kalānidhināby the Kalānidhi (instr.) — the 'treasure of the arts', the lead actor; and the 'treasury of digits (kalā)', the moon instr. of agent; the pivot-word of the pun (śleṣa)कलानिधि के द्वारा — जो एक साथ मुख्य नट (कलाओं का निधि) और चन्द्रमा (कलाओं का निधि) है; यही श्लेष की धुरी है
kalānidhinā — by the Kalānidhi (the master-actor / the moon); naṭatā — while dancing (/ while moving on its course); raṅga-sthale — on the stage (in the sky's arena); kirāta-rājaṁ nihatya — having struck the Kirāta king down.
Read the line twice. On stage: the Kalānidhi, the master-actor, dancing, strikes the Kirāta king down in the arena. In the sky: the Kalānidhi, the moon, moving on its course, overcomes an adverse influence in the arena of the heavens.
An udāharaṇa of udghātyaka (kārikā 26, nc.4.22), quoted from Lalita-Mādhava 1.11. The definition: when words are of unclear meaning (agatārtha), a character joins them with other words to draw out their sense — that is udghātyaka. This verse is exactly that: its words are deliberately double (śleṣa) — kalānidhi is at once the lead actor and the moon, kirāta-rāja and tārā-kara-grahaṇa each run on two levels — and a character (the sūtradhāra, posing as an astrologer) supplies the connecting words that pull out the intended meaning. Surface: an astrologer's reading of the moon in the sky. Underneath: the play's own plot, the actor's triumph. Read every line twice.

samaye tena vidheyaṁ guṇavati tārā-kara-grahaṇam ||
samayeat the right moment (loc.) — when the time comesसमय पर / शुभ मुहूर्त में (सप्तमी)
tenaby him / by it (instr.) — that same Kalānidhi, actor and moon alikeउसके (कलानिधि के) द्वारा (तृतीया)
vidheyaṁis to be brought about (gerundive) — will surely be accomplished gerundive of vi-dhā, 'must / will be done'किया जाना चाहिए / किया जाएगा (वि-धा का विधि-अर्थक कृत्य-रूप)
guṇavatiwhen the moment is auspicious (loc., agreeing with samaye) — a time full of good qualities; or, as address, 'O lady of virtue' — the śleṣa keeps both loc. with samaye ('at an auspicious hour') OR vocative ('O virtuous lady')शुभ (गुणवान्) मुहूर्त में — समये के साथ सप्तमी; अथवा 'हे गुणवती!'
tārā-kara-grahaṇamthe taking of Tārā's hand — winning Tārā in marriage (kara-grahaṇa = wedding); and, on the sky-reading, the catching of the stars' rays (tārā = stars, kara = rays), the moon seizing their light the closing pun: kara = 'hand' (marriage) and 'ray' (starlight); tārā = the woman Tārā and 'the stars'तारा-कर-ग्रहण — एक ओर तारों की किरणों (कर) का ग्रहण, दूसरी ओर तारा नामक स्त्री के हाथ (कर) का ग्रहण अर्थात् पाणिग्रहण/विवाह
samaye guṇavati — at the auspicious moment (/ O virtuous lady); tena — by that same one (actor / moon); tārā-kara-grahaṇam — the winning of Tārā's hand (/ the moon's catching of the stars' rays); vidheyam — is to be brought about.
And when the moment is auspicious, by that same one it will surely be brought about: the winning of Tārā's hand in marriage — and, by the sky's reading, the moon's catching of the light of the stars. Not the actor's downfall, then, but his triumph, and a bride with it.
The closing words carry the reassurance home, and show udghātyaka at work once more: kara-grahaṇa is at once 'seizing the rays (kara)' — the moon overtaking starlight — and 'taking the hand (kara)' — a wedding; tārā is at once 'the stars' and the woman Tārā. Where the naṭī feared the actor's ruin, the astrologer's drawn-out reading yields victory and a marriage.
kalānidhinā naṭatā raṅga-sthale kirāta-rājaṁ nihatya, tena guṇavati samaye tārā-kara-grahaṇaṁ vidheyam.
Read the whole verse twice, for every word runs on two levels at once. On the stage: the Kalānidhi — the 'treasure of the arts', the master-actor — dancing in the theatre's arena, has struck the Kirāta king down; and by that same one, when the moment is auspicious, one thing more is to be brought about: the winning of Tārā's hand in marriage. In the sky, the very same words say: the Kalānidhi — the 'treasury of digits', the moon — moving on its course through the arena of the heavens, has overcome an adverse influence; and by that same moon, at the fitting hour, the catching of the stars' rays is to follow. Where ruin was feared, the drawn-out reading yields triumph and a bride.
An udāharaṇa of udghātyaka (kārikā 26, nc.4.22), quoted from Lalita-Mādhava 1.11: words deliberately double in meaning (śleṣa) whose sense a character draws out — here the sūtradhāra posing as an astrologer, whose sky-reading of the moon simultaneously spells the play's own plot, the actor's victory.
