padāniwords — the words that are the raw material here (they will be the thing joined in L2) nominative/accusative plural neuter; taken up as the object of yojayanti in L2जिन पदों (शब्दों) को — आगे L2 के 'योजयन्ति' का कर्म
tunow, on the other hand — turning to the next device to be defined transitional particle marking the shift to a new lakṣaṇaअब — नए लक्षण की ओर मुड़ते हुए ('तु' विषयान्तर सूचित करता है)
agatārthāniwhose meaning is not yet grasped — words whose sense does not come through on their own a-gata-artha, adjective qualifying padāni: 'having a meaning (artha) not arrived at (a-gata)'जिनका अर्थ (तुरन्त) प्राप्त नहीं होता, अर्थात् जिनका भाव अस्पष्ट रह जाता है
tad-artha-gatayein order to arrive at their meaning — so that the sense of those words can be reached dative of purpose; tad-artha 'the meaning of them' + gati 'arriving, comprehension'उन पदों के अर्थ की प्राप्ति (बोध) के लिए — प्रयोजन दिखाने वाली चतुर्थी
narāḥpeople — those who do the joining (the speakers on stage) nominative plural, the subject of yojayanti in L2लोग (पात्र) — जो कर्ता हैं, आगे L2 के 'योजयन्ति' का कर्तृपद
narāḥ — people; agatārthāni padāni — words whose meaning is not grasped; tad-artha-gataye — in order to arrive at their meaning; yojayanti (L2) — connect [them].
narāḥ — लोग; agatārthāni padāni — जिन पदों का अर्थ स्पष्ट नहीं होता उन्हें; tad-artha-gataye — उन्हीं का अर्थ समझाने के लिए; (L2 में) anyaiḥ padaiḥ yojayanti — दूसरे पदों से जोड़ते हैं।
This is the definition of the udghātyaka. Start with the case it addresses: there are words (padāni) whose meaning does not come through on its own — agatārthāni, their sense is not yet grasped. To reach that hidden sense (tad-artha-gataye), people on stage (narāḥ) do something with them. L2 says what.
कुछ पद ऐसे होते हैं जिनका अर्थ तुरन्त समझ में नहीं आता। उन पदों का भाव खोलने के लिए पात्र दूसरे शब्दों को उनसे जोड़ते हैं। यही आगे 'उद्घात्यक' कहलाता है।
The lakṣaṇa (defining verse) of the udghātyaka, the first of the thirteen vīthy-aṅgas (limbs of the vīthī) that a playwright may deploy in the prastāvanā, the prologue. Rūpa gives it here as the received nāṭya-śāstra definition (introduced simply as 'atha udghātyakam—', 'now, the udghātyaka'). Its two udāharaṇas (illustrations) follow immediately: nc.4.23 (ref 26q1) and nc.4.24 (ref 26q2).
यह उद्घात्यक का लक्षण-श्लोक है — प्रस्तावना में प्रयुक्त होने वाले तेरह वीथ्यंगों में पहला। रूप गोस्वामी इसे नाट्यशास्त्र की परम्परा-प्राप्त परिभाषा के रूप में सीधे 'अथ उद्घात्यकम्—' कहकर देते हैं। इसके दो उदाहरण तुरन्त आगे आते हैं — nc.4.23 तथा nc.4.24।
L2definition
yojayanti padair anyais tad udghātyakam ucyate ||
yojayantithey connect, they construe — join the unclear words up so the sense emerges 3rd plural present causative of √yuj; main verb, subject narāḥ (L1)जोड़ते हैं (मिलाते हैं) — मुख्य क्रिया, कर्ता L1 के 'नराः'
padair anyaiswith other words — by supplying further words alongside the unclear ones instrumental plural, means: padaiḥ anyaiḥ, 'by means of other words'दूसरे पदों (शब्दों) के द्वारा — करण दिखाने वाली तृतीया
tadthat — that whole procedure of joining, now to be named nominative neuter, subject of ucyateवह (ऐसा प्रयोग) — 'उच्यते' का कर्ता
udghātyakamthe udghātyaka — the name the procedure is given predicate nominative neuter, what tad is called'उद्घात्यक' — यही उसका नाम बताया जाता है
ucyateis called — so the tradition names it passive 3rd singular of √vacकहा जाता है — कर्मवाच्य क्रिया
narāḥ (L1) anyaiḥ padaiḥ — people, with other words; agatārthāni padāni (L1) — the words whose meaning is not grasped; yojayanti — connect; tad — that [device]; udghātyakam ucyate — is called the udghātyaka.
narāḥ (L1) — पात्र; anyaiḥ padaiḥ — दूसरे पदों से; (agatārthāni padāni) yojayanti — अस्पष्ट अर्थ वाले पदों को जोड़ते हैं; tad — वह प्रयोग; udghātyakam ucyate — उद्घात्यक कहा जाता है।
Here is the device itself. People take the words whose meaning was unclear and connect them (yojayanti) with other words (padair anyaiḥ) — they string in extra words so the buried sense comes out. That whole move — clearing up an obscure phrase by joining it to further words — is what is called (ucyate) the udghātyaka. So the udghātyaka is a prologue device where a puzzling line is opened up by additional words that make its meaning land.
पात्र उन अस्पष्ट पदों को दूसरे शब्दों से जोड़ देते हैं। इस प्रकार का प्रयोग ही 'उद्घात्यक' नाम से कहा जाता है।
udghātyaka literally means 'a prising-open, a striking-up' (from ud-√ghaṭ / ud-√han), which fits a device that pries open a sense that was shut. The two illustrations at nc.4.23 and nc.4.24 show it working inside the prastāvanās of Rūpa's own plays.
'उद्घात्यक' का शाब्दिक अर्थ है 'खोल देना, उखाड़ना' (उद्-√घट् / उद्-√हन् से) — जो उस युक्ति के अनुकूल है जो बन्द पड़े अर्थ को खोल देती है। nc.4.23 तथा nc.4.24 के दोनों उदाहरण इसे रूप गोस्वामी के अपने नाटकों की प्रस्तावनाओं के भीतर काम करते हुए दिखाते हैं।
narāḥ agatārthāni padāni tad-artha-gataye anyaiḥ padaiḥ yojayanti, tad udghātyakam ucyate.
narāḥ (लोग, पात्र) agatārthāni padāni (जिन पदों का अर्थ तुरन्त स्पष्ट नहीं होता उन पदों को) tad-artha-gataye (उन्हीं पदों के अर्थ की प्राप्ति के लिए) anyaiḥ padaiḥ (दूसरे पदों के द्वारा) tu (अब) yojayanti (जोड़ते हैं); tad (वह प्रयोग) udghātyakam (उद्घात्यक) ucyate (कहा जाता है)।
When there are words whose meaning does not come through on its own, and people on the stage, in order to reach that hidden sense, string them together with other, further words — that device is called the udghātyaka.
जिन पदों का अर्थ तुरन्त प्राप्त नहीं होता, अर्थात् जिनका भाव अस्पष्ट रह जाता है, उन पदों के अर्थ का बोध कराने के लिए पात्र उन्हें दूसरे शब्दों से जोड़ देते हैं; इस प्रकार का प्रयोग ही 'उद्घात्यक' कहलाता है।

यह कारिका उद्घात्यक नामक अर्थोपक्षेपक का लक्षण देती है।
