L1definition
aṣṭābhir daśabhir yuktā kiṁ vā dvādaśabhiḥ padaiḥ ||
aṣṭābhiḥwith eight instr. pl., agreeing with padaiḥ — the count of padasआठ पदों से
daśabhiḥor with tenअथवा दस पदों से
yuktāfurnished, made up [the nāndī, understood] nom. f.; the feminine subject is nāndī, carried over from the last kārikā (4.1)युक्त होती है — (नान्दी, जो पिछली कारिका से चली आ रही है)
kiṁ vāor elseअथवा
dvādaśabhiḥwith twelveबारह
padaiḥpadas — wordsपदों से (अर्थात् पदों की गिनती से)
aṣṭābhiḥ daśabhiḥ kiṁ vā dvādaśabhiḥ padaiḥ yuktā [nāndī] — [the nāndī is] made up of eight, ten, or else twelve padas (words).
aṣṭābhiḥ — आठ; daśabhiḥ — दस; yuktā — युक्त (नान्दी); kiṁ vā — अथवा; dvādaśabhiḥ — बारह; padaiḥ — पदों से — नान्दी आठ, दस अथवा बारह पदों से युक्त होती है।
How long should the nāndī be? Rūpa gives three permitted lengths: it is made up of eight padas — that is, eight words — or ten, or else twelve. The subject is still the nāndī from the previous kārikā; yuktā, 'furnished with,' agrees with it.
नान्दी आठ, दस अथवा बारह पदों से युक्त होती है। यहाँ स्त्रीलिंग विशेषण 'yuktā' का विशेष्य नान्दी है, जो पिछली कारिका से चला आ रहा है।
pada here means a word (a metrical unit of the verse), so the rule fixes the nāndī's size by word-count. The permitted counts — eight, ten, twelve — match the nāndī measures of the older nāṭya-śāstra tradition.
यहाँ 'पद' का अर्थ है शब्द (श्लोक की छन्दोमयी इकाई); अतः यह नियम नान्दी का परिमाण शब्दों की गिनती से निश्चित करता है। आठ, दस और बारह — ये अनुमत गिनतियाँ प्राचीन नाट्यशास्त्र-परम्परा के नान्दी-मानों से मेल खाती हैं।

candranā-māṅkitā prāyo maṅgalārtha-padojjvalā |
candra-nāma-aṅkitāmarked with the name 'candra,' the moon candra-nāma 'the moon's name' + aṅkitā 'stamped, bearing'; feminine, qualifying nāndīचन्द्र के नाम से अंकित (जिस पर चन्द्र का नाम अंकित हो) — नान्दी
prāyaḥfor the most part — as a general tendency, not an absolute ruleप्रायः (सामान्यतया, बहुधा)
maṅgala-artha-pada-ujjvalāand shining with words of auspicious meaning maṅgala-artha-pada 'words whose sense is maṅgala' + ujjvalā 'lit up, resplendent'मंगल-अर्थवाले पदों से उज्ज्वल (जिन पदों का अर्थ मंगल हो, उनसे देदीप्यमान)
prāyaḥ candra-nāma-aṅkitā maṅgala-artha-pada-ujjvalā [nāndī] — [the nāndī is] generally stamped with the moon's name and lit up with words of auspicious meaning.
candra-nāma-aṅkitā — चन्द्र के नाम से अंकित; prāyaḥ — प्रायः; maṅgala-artha-pada-ujjvalā — मंगल-अर्थवाले पदों से उज्ज्वल — (नान्दी) प्रायः चन्द्र के नाम से अंकित तथा मंगल-अर्थवाले पदों से उज्ज्वल होती है।
Two more features of the nāndī. First, it generally bears the name candra — the word for the moon appears in it. Second, it is ujjvalā, resplendent, with padas of maṅgala meaning: words that carry a blessing. The prāyaḥ, 'usually,' softens the moon-name rule — it holds for the most part, not without exception. The next line spells out which auspicious images count.
नान्दी प्रायः चन्द्र के नाम से अंकित होती है और मंगल-अर्थवाले पदों से उज्ज्वल रहती है।
candra = the moon. prāyaḥ flags the moon-name as a general tendency rather than a fixed requirement, unlike the pada-count of the previous line.
चन्द्र अर्थात् चाँद। 'प्रायः' शब्द बतलाता है कि चन्द्र-नाम एक सामान्य प्रवृत्ति है, कोई निश्चित नियम नहीं — जैसा पिछली पंक्ति का पद-गणना-नियम था वैसा नहीं।

maṅgalaṁ cakra-kamala-cakrora-kumudādikam ||
maṅgalaṁand the auspicious content (maṅgala) [means] nom. n., picking up maṅgala-artha from the previous line to define itमंगल (पिछली पंक्ति के 'मंगल-अर्थ' को लेकर उसकी व्याख्या करते हुए)
cakra-kamala-cakrora-kumuda-ādikamthe cakra(vāka), the lotus, the cakora, the night-lily (kumuda), and the like ādi 'and so on' leaves the list open; cakrora reads for cakora, the moonbeam-birdचक्र (चक्रवाक), कमल, चक्रोर (= चकोर) तथा कुमुद आदि — 'आदि' से सूची खुली रहती है
maṅgalaṁ cakra-kamala-cakrora-kumuda-ādikam — the auspicious content (maṅgala) means the cakra(vāka), lotus, cakora, night-lily, and the like.
maṅgalaṁ — मंगल; cakra-kamala-cakrora-kumuda-ādikam — चक्रवाक, कमल, चकोर, कुमुद आदि — मंगल अर्थात् चक्रवाक, कमल, चकोर, कुमुद आदि (शुभ प्रतीक)।
What does the maṅgala — the auspicious content named in the previous line — actually consist of? Things like the cakra(vāka) bird, the kamala (lotus), the cakora, the kumuda (night-lily), and so on. The word ādi, 'and the like,' leaves the list open. These are all creatures and flowers bound to a luminary — moon or sun — so naming them fills the nāndī with the moon-imagery fitting a verse that bears the moon's name.
मंगल से अभिप्राय है चक्रवाक, कमल, चकोर, कुमुद आदि। 'आदि' कहकर यह सूची खुली छोड़ दी गई है।
These are stock auspicious images of Sanskrit poetry, each tied to a luminary: the cakravāka (ruddy goose) and kamala (lotus) answer to the sun, while the cakora (said to feed on moonbeams) and kumuda (the night-lily, which opens by moonlight) answer to the moon. Their luminary link is why they suit a nāndī stamped with the moon's name. cakrora in the compound reads as cakora.
aṣṭābhiḥ daśabhiḥ kiṁ vā dvādaśabhiḥ padaiḥ yuktā, candra-nāma-aṅkitā, prāyaḥ maṅgala-artha-pada-ujjvalā [nāndī]; maṅgalaṁ [ca] cakra-kamala-cakrora-kumuda-ādikam.
(नान्दी) aṣṭābhiḥ daśabhiḥ kiṁ vā dvādaśabhiḥ padaiḥ yuktā (भवति); (सा च) prāyaḥ candra-nāma-aṅkitā maṅgala-artha-pada-ujjvalā (च भवति); maṅgalaṁ (पुनः) cakra-kamala-cakrora-kumuda-ādikam।
The nāndī is made up of eight, ten, or else twelve padas — words; it bears the name candra, the moon, and it is lit up, for the most part, with words of auspicious meaning. And that auspicious content consists of things like the cakra(vāka), the lotus, the cakora, the night-lily (kumuda), and the like.
नान्दी आठ, दस अथवा बारह पदों से युक्त होती है; और वह प्रायः चन्द्र के नाम से अंकित तथा मंगल-अर्थवाले पदों से उज्ज्वल रहती है। यहाँ मंगल से अभिप्राय है चक्रवाक, कमल, चकोर, कुमुद आदि शुभ प्रतीक — 'आदि' कहकर यह सूची खुली छोड़ दी गई है।
A three-line lakṣaṇa defining the nāndī (the opening benedictory verse): its permitted length by word-count, its usual marking with the moon's name and auspicious diction, then a gloss of which auspicious images that maṅgala comprises.
पिछली कारिका से चली आती नान्दी का लक्षण पूरा करती कारिका — उसका पद-परिमाण, चन्द्र-नाम का अंकन तथा मंगल-अर्थवाले पदों को गिनाती है।
