athāsya pratipādyasya tīrthaṁ prastāvanocyate |
athanow — turning to a fresh topic, the prologue the transitional 'now'; also carries a maṅgala flavour at the head of a sectionअब — किसी नये प्रकरण के आरम्भ का सूचक; साथ ही आरम्भ में मंगलाचरण का भाव भी लिये हुए
asya pratipādyasyaof this matter that the play is going to present gen.; pratipādya = what is to be set forth — the drama's subject/themeइस प्रतिपाद्य का — जो प्रतिपादित किया जाना है, अर्थात् नाटक का विषय-वस्तु; षष्ठी होने से 'जिसका'
tīrthamthe way in, the entry-pointतीर्थ — उतरने का घाट, अर्थात् प्रवेश-स्थान
atha asya pratipādyasya tīrthaṁ prastāvanā ucyate — Now, the way into this matter the play will present is called the prastāvanā.
Now Rūpa turns to the prologue. Every play has a subject it means to present; the audience needs a way into it. That way in — the entry-point to the drama — is called the prastāvanā.
tīrtha literally means a ford — the shallow spot where you step down into a river. Here it is the point of access: the prologue is where the audience steps into the play. pratipādya is the vastu, the story-matter the drama sets out to convey.

prastāvanāyāṁ tu mukhe nāndī kāryā śubhāvahā ||
prastāvanāyāṁ tuand within the prastāvanā itself loc.; tu shifts from defining the prologue to prescribing what goes inside itप्रस्तावना में तो — सप्तमी होने से 'में'; 'तु' शब्द से अब प्रस्तावना की परिभाषा से हटकर उसके भीतर क्या हो, इसका विधान होता है
mukheat the very opening, right at the front loc.; mukha 'mouth, front' = the outset — not the technical mukha-sandhiमुख में — सप्तमी; 'मुख' अर्थात् आरम्भ में, प्रारम्भ के भाग में; यह तकनीकी मुख-सन्धि नहीं
nāndīthe nāndī, the opening benediction nom., the thing prescribedनान्दी — प्रथमा में, यही वह वस्तु है जिसका विधान किया जा रहा है
kāryāmust be performed gerundive — a rule, 'is to be done'की जानी चाहिए — कृत्य-प्रत्यय से बना विधान, अर्थात् यह नियम है कि करनी ही चाहिए
śubhāvahāone that brings good fortune śubha-āvahā, 'carrying what is auspicious'; qualifies nāndīशुभ को लानेवाली — शुभ + आवहा, अर्थात् जो मंगल ले आती है; नान्दी का विशेषण
prastāvanāyāṁ tu mukhe śubhāvahā nāndī kāryā — And within the prastāvanā, at the very opening, an auspicious nāndī is to be performed.
And inside the prologue, right at the front, one must perform the nāndī — the opening benediction. It should be śubhāvahā: a verse that carries good fortune and sets an auspicious tone before the play proper begins.
nāndī is the benedictory verse recited at a play's start, invoking blessing on the performance and the audience. Note mukhe here just means 'at the opening'; do not confuse it with the mukha-sandhi, the first of the five plot-junctures.

āśīḥa blessing — invoking good upon someoneआशीर्वाद — मंगल-कामना
namaskriyāan act of homage — a bowing to the deityनमस्कार-क्रिया — इष्टदेव को प्रणाम
vastu-nirdeśaa pointing-out of the subject — naming what the play is aboutवस्तु-निर्देश — नाटक की कथावस्तु का संकेत, विषय की ओर इशारा
anyatama-anvitāfurnished with any one of these anyatama 'any one of several' + anvitā 'accompanied by'; feminine, agreeing with nāndīइनमें से किसी एक से युक्त — अन्यतम अर्थात् अनेकों में से कोई एक, अन्विता अर्थात् सहित; स्त्रीलिंग होने से नान्दी का विशेषण
āśīḥ-namaskriyā-vastu-nirdeśa-anyatama-anvitā [nāndī] — [the nāndī is] one furnished with any one among a blessing, an act of homage, or a pointing-out of the subject.
What must the nāndī contain? At least one of three things: a blessing (āśīḥ), an act of homage (namaskriyā) — bowing to the deity — or a pointing-out of the theme (vastu-nirdeśa), naming what the play is about. The word anyatama, 'any one of them,' is the key: the nāndī needs at least one of the three, not all of them together.
anyatama = 'any one of several,' so a single member suffices — one blessing, or one obeisance, or one indication of the theme makes a valid nāndī. This triad — āśīḥ, namaskriyā, vastu-nirdeśa — is the standard content prescribed for the nāndī in the nāṭya-śāstra tradition.
atha asya pratipādyasya tīrthaṁ prastāvanā ucyate; prastāvanāyāṁ tu mukhe āśīḥ-namaskriyā-vastu-nirdeśa-anyatama-anvitā śubhāvahā nāndī kāryā.
atha asya pratipādyasya तीर्थं prastāvanā (iti) ucyate; prastāvanāyāṁ tu mukhe āśīḥ-namaskriyā-vastu-nirdeśa-anyatama-anvitā śubhāvahā nāndī kāryā।
Now, the way into the matter that the play means to present is what we call the prastāvanā, the prologue; and within that prastāvanā, right at its opening, one must perform the nāndī, the benedictory verse — a nāndī that brings good fortune and is furnished with any one among a blessing, an act of homage, or a pointing-out of the play's theme.
Rūpa's defining kārikā for the prastāvanā: it names the prologue as the audience's entry-point into the drama, then prescribes the auspicious nāndī at its head, requiring any one of the triad āśīḥ / namaskriyā / vastu-nirdeśa.
