A nāṭaka takes one of two moods as its main rasa — either śṛṅgāra (love) or vīra (heroism). Its subject is a delightful one. And the action runs on unbroken in it, with no gap.
mukhya, 'principal', is a technical claim: one rasa dominates and the rest are present only in support (aṅga) — the standard doctrine that a nāṭaka is built around a single ruling mood.

The story hooks on exactly where the prastāvanā — the prologue — leaves off. And it is built out through the sandhis, the junctures that carry the plot, along with their sandhy-aṅgas, the smaller limbs that make up each juncture.
The five sandhis (junctures) of a nāṭaka are mukha, pratimukha, garbha, vimarśa (avamarśa), and nirvahaṇa; each holds its own set of sandhy-aṅgas, the sub-limbs (traditionally sixty-four across all five). The next kārikā (1.5) goes on to count these out — twenty-one sandhyantaras and thirty-six ornaments.

A nāṭaka is a play that takes one of two moods as its ruling rasa — either śṛṅgāra, love, or vīra, heroism — and plays it out in a delightful subject, its action running on unbroken with no gap. Its main story hooks on exactly where the prastāvanā, the prologue, leaves off, and it is built out through the sandhis, the junctures that carry the plot, together with their sandhy-aṅgas, the smaller limbs that compose each juncture.
Rūpa's own lakṣaṇa of the nāṭaka, naming its five defining marks — a single ruling rasa (śṛṅgāra or vīra), a delightful subject, unbroken continuity of action, the plot beginning where the prastāvanā ends, and construction through the five sandhis with their sandhy-aṅgas (which the next kārikā, 1.5, enumerates).
