divyena divyādivyena tathā’divyena vā yutam |
divyenajoined with a hero who is divya — a divine being, a god instrumental with yutam: the nāyaka the play is furnished withदिव्य नायक से — अर्थात् देवता से — (युक्त)
divyādivyenaor with one who is divyādivya — part divine, part humanअथवा दिव्य-अदिव्य नायक से — जो अंशतः देव, अंशतः मर्त्य हो
adivyenaor with one who is adivya — a purely human, non-divine heroअथवा अदिव्य नायक से — अर्थात् केवल मनुष्य से
vāor — marking the three as alternatives: any one of them qualifiesअथवा
yutam[the nāṭaka is] joined with [such a hero] nominative neuter, agreeing with the understood nāṭakam(इनमें से किसी नायक से) युक्त — यह (नाटक का) विशेषण है
yutam — [the nāṭaka is] joined with a hero; divyena — one who is divya (divine); divyādivyena — or divyādivya (part divine, part human); tathā adivyena vā — and likewise, or, adivya (purely human).
Rūpa now fixes the play's hero (nāyaka). A nāṭaka is built around one hero, and he may be of three kinds. He can be divya — a god, a divine being. Or divyādivya — part divine and part human. Or adivya — an ordinary human, with no divinity at all. Any one of the three will serve.
divya, divyādivya, and adivya are the three standard classes of nāyaka by nature (birth): the god, the demigod-cum-mortal, and the mere man. The verse strings them as instrumentals because the nāṭaka is defined as 'joined with' (yutam) such a hero.

dhīreṇawith a dhīra hero — one who is steadfast, self-possessed the base quality shared by all the classical hero-types; instrumental again qualifying the nāyakaधीर (गुण) से — जो सब नायक-भेदों का मूल आधार है

udāttenanamely an udātta one — exalted, noble-natured; so, dhīrodāttaउदात्त नायक से — अर्थात् धीरोदात्त से
kṛṣṇaḥand when the hero is Kṛṣṇa nominative; paired by the two ca's with lalitenaकृष्ण (के नाटक के लिए)
caand — the first of the pairऔर
lalitenawith a lalita one — graceful, playful; so, dhīralalitaललित नायक से — अर्थात् धीरललित से
caand — the second of the pair, tying Kṛṣṇa to the lalita typeऔर (इस प्रकार)
āḍhyam — [the nāṭaka is] enriched; dhīreṇa — with a dhīra (steadfast) hero; udāttena — namely an udātta (exalted) one, i.e. dhīrodātta; kṛṣṇaḥ ca lalitena ca — and, in Kṛṣṇa's case, with a lalita (graceful) one, i.e. dhīralalita.
The hero should also be dhīra — steadfast, master of himself. That much is shared by all the types. On top of it, the standard nāṭaka hero is udātta — exalted and noble; the two together make the dhīrodātta hero. But Rūpa adds a second option: when Kṛṣṇa is the hero, he is lalita — graceful and playful; the two together make the dhīralalita hero. So the udātta type is the general rule, and the lalita type is Kṛṣṇa's own.
dhīra ('steadfast') is the common base of the four classical nāyaka types — dhīrodātta, dhīroddhata, dhīralalita, dhīraśānta. Rūpa selects just two here: dhīrodātta for heroes in general, and dhīralalita for Kṛṣṇa specifically — the carefree, love-adept hero the Kṛṣṇa-nāṭaka is built for.
[nāṭakam — the nāṭaka, understood from the running definition] yutam — is joined with [a nāyaka, a hero]; divyena — one who is divya, a divine being, a god; divyādivyena — or one who is divyādivya, part divine and part human; tathā — and likewise; adivyena vā — or one who is adivya, purely human, with no divinity — vā marking the three as alternatives, any one of which qualifies; [and that nāṭaka is] āḍhyam — enriched, furnished; dhīreṇa — with a hero who is dhīra, steadfast and self-possessed — the base quality shared by all the types; udāttena — namely an udātta one, exalted and noble-natured, i.e. the dhīrodātta hero [for heroes in general]; Kṛṣṇaḥ ca — and when the hero is Kṛṣṇa; lalitena ca — [the nāṭaka is enriched] with a lalita one, graceful and playful, i.e. the dhīralalita hero.
Rūpa now fixes the hero of the nāṭaka. A nāṭaka is built around a single nāyaka, and by his birth he may be of three kinds: divya, a god; or divyādivya, part divine and part human; or adivya, an ordinary mortal with no divinity — any one of the three will serve. Whichever he is, the play is enriched by a dhīra hero, steadfast and master of himself; and this steadfastness, joined to a noble, exalted nature, makes the udātta type — the dhīrodātta — the general hero of the nāṭaka. But when the hero is Kṛṣṇa, he is instead lalita, graceful and playful: the dhīralalita hero, the carefree and love-adept nāyaka for whom the Kṛṣṇa-nāṭaka is composed.
A lakṣaṇa-kārikā defining the nāyaka of the nāṭaka: it classes the hero by birth (divya / divyādivya / adivya) and by character (the shared base dhīra, then udātta = dhīrodātta for heroes in general, and lalita = dhīralalita reserved for Kṛṣṇa).
