35. upasargāḥ kriyāyoge. Association with an action is kriyāyoga (a tṛtīyā tatpuruṣa); in that kriyāyoga.
upasargāḥ is in the nominative (prathamā) case, kriyāyoge is in the locative (saptamī) case; this sūtra has two words.
In association with an action, pra and the rest take the name upasarga (upasarga-saṁjñā).
The words beginning with pra (prādi) are twenty-two in number. When these are joined with an action, that is, with a verbal root (dhātu), they take the upasarga-saṁjñā, that is, they are called upasargas.
Although an upasarga has no meaning of its own, still, joining with a verbal root, they draw out various different meanings. Therefore, though they are not denotative (vācaka) of a meaning, they are yet indicative (dyotaka) of those respective meanings. In their independent form they take the nipāta-saṁjñā, and in association with an action the upasarga-saṁjñā. Along with this there is also the sūtra gatiśca, which likewise, in association with an action, makes the gati-saṁjñā. Therefore these are well known in the form of upasarga and gati. These are: pra, parā, apa, sam, anu, ava, nis, nir, dus, dur, vi, āṅ, ni, adhi, api, ati, su, ut, abhi, prati, pari, upa. In the classical (laukika) Sanskrit language these are always employed immediately before the verbal root, but
in the Vedas they are employed even afterwards, or even when there is an intervening separation (vyavadhāna). Usually there is only one upasarga before a verbal root, but here and there two or more upasargas too have been seen.
