Dedication

I ever bow to my guru Śrī Mukti-Nārāyaṇa — the moon adorning the milk-ocean of the Ātreya lineage, who took shelter at the lotus-feet of Śuka-guru upon his recognition by the śālagrāma, who obtained the Veda from his teacher Gopālārya and (further learning) from Aṇaṅgarārya, and who attained the fourth āśrama (sannyāsa) by the grace of Śrī Śaṭhakopa-yogin. (1)

By whose grace even the least particle of understanding arose in me, and through that grace my entry onto the path of the śāstra that follows it — to those, my own maternal uncles, the best of gurus, Śrī Śrīdhara, expert in the six śāstras, I bow forever. (2)

I worship my own ācārya Śrīdhara, the serene one, master of the six disciplines (ṣaḍ-ācārya), the ascetic (yati), the guru — Śrīnivāsa Mukti-Nārāyaṇa Rāmānuja. (3)

Govinda, the worthy son of Bhīmaprasāda, a Vaiṣṇava householder, having composed to the best of his understanding a commentary on the Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī — for the entry into Pāṇini's system of those who follow the straight path — respectfully offers it, for the delight of Śrīdharācārya. (4–5)

An offering at the feet of our teacher — the most excellent master of the six disciplines, adorned with boundless glory, the ācārya who re-established the sacred path of the Veda and who propagated both Vedāntas — His Holiness Śrīnivāsa Mukti-Nārāyaṇa Rāmānuja Jīyar (Śrīdharācārya) Svāmī.

Benediction

A benediction received from Ācārya Śrī Prof. Ādyā Prasāda Miśra — a profound scholar of the Sanskrit world, a knower of the essence of grammar and the other śāstras, one who has grasped things as they truly are, author and expositor of many abstruse works, former Head of the Department of Grammar at Sampūrṇānanda Sanskrit University, Vārāṇasī, and former Vice-Chancellor of Maharṣi Maheśa Yogī Vedic University, Jabalpur.

I have examined from beginning to end the Hindi commentary titled Śrīdhara-mukhollāsinī, written on the Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī by the enlightened thinker, the sage Paṇḍita Govinda Prasāda Śāstrī. The commentary is extremely precise, simple, and easy to comprehend. All the scripturally-sanctioned ideas have been explained in such detail that, after reading it, nothing remains that would require any further clearing of doubts.

Although before this many Hindi commentaries and glosses on the Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī have already been written, and some are indeed very good — if a list of the finest commentaries on the Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī were to be made, this too could be placed in that rank. Among them as well, explaining the subject with ease and simplicity will be its distinctive feature.

Śrī Govinda Prasāda Śāstrī is an extremely talented, diligent, and gifted scholar. This work of his is highly praiseworthy. Through it not only will students benefit, but it will also be of great help in resolving the doubts of inquiring teachers.

My prayer to the Supreme Lord is that Govinda Prasāda Śāstrī may remain continually engaged in this endeavour and go on benefiting the world of grammar through his works.

Editor's Note

I bow to the three sages: Vararuci, the author of the vārttikas (the 'sentence-maker'); Patañjali, the author of the bhāṣya; and Pāṇini, the author of the sūtras.

Not only humanity, but the complete welfare — both worldly and otherworldly — of every living being is possible only through Indian culture; today even the scientific community has begun to recognize this. The foundation of this ancient (ārṣa) culture is the Sanskrit corpus (vāṅmaya), and the very root-foundation of that is Pāṇinian grammar.

According to the maxim of the great poet Kālidāsa — 'by the turning of the wheel's rim, one's fortune goes now down and now up' (nīcair gacchaty upari ca daśā cakra-nemi-krameṇa) — like other things of the world, our culture and the Sanskrit language too attain now a highly-developed and now an ordinary state. That is why our Sanskrit culture, which for some time had become as if lost, is today again undergoing a widespread revival and propagation.

In the Sanskrit corpus there were grammatical sūtras of other teachers as well, but before the sūtras of Maharṣi Pāṇini they all paled. The reason for this lay in the distinctive scientific character of Pāṇini's sūtras, and in the composition of the vārttikas and the Mahābhāṣya by the later teachers Kātyāyana and Patañjali.

Upon these sūtras composed by Maharṣi Pāṇini, two kinds of commentaries were written — those following the sūtra order (sūtrānusārī) and those following the process order (prakriyānusārī). Among the sūtra-order commentaries the well-known are the Kāśikā and others, and among the process-order ones the foremost are the Prakriyā-kaumudī and others.

It is precisely because of these two streams that Pāṇinian grammar has been divided by the distinction of the new (navya) and the ancient (prācīna). From the standpoint of knowledge, both processes complement each other; nevertheless, to gain entry into the vast Sanskrit literature, one today generally takes the support of the new works such as the Laghu-kaumudī. Ācārya Varadarāja took some 1276 of the most useful sūtras out of the roughly 4000 sūtras of Pāṇini's Aṣṭādhyāyī and made this work. By studying it, students obtain a good acquaintance with Sanskrit grammar, because it incorporates all the essential topics of grammar — sandhi, samāsa, kāraka, and so on. This is the very reason why today, for knowledge of Sanskrit, it is the Laghu-kaumudī that is taught and studied everywhere, especially in North India.

To become accomplished in all the śāstras, it is necessary, at the very beginning, to study — along with grammar — also lexicon (koṣa) and poetry (kāvya). There is a well-known saying in the world that a 'three-text paṇḍita' — that is, one who has studied the fifteen hundred (verses) of the Raghuvaṁśa, the fifteen hundred of the Amara-koṣa, and the fifteen hundred verses of the Laghu-kaumudī as well (counting one verse per 32 syllables) — is regarded as a learned man.

Although this Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī, foremost among these three, has already had several commentaries in Sanskrit, Hindi, and other languages, there was still, for Hindi-speakers, a need for an excellent commentary that is neither too extensive nor too brief; for the earlier commentaries were either too extensive or too brief. Very extensive works are meant only for teachers, while very brief works are, generally, only for conveying the meanings of words. Because of this, beginning students were feeling great difficulty in study. Therefore, keeping all these things in view, the revered Gurudeva Śrī Govindācārya has composed this commentary named Śrīdhara-mukhollāsinī.

The greatest feature of this commentary is this: over the course of 25–26 years, while teaching students, the revered Śrī Gurudeva felt the need to explain the difficult topics contained in the text with ease, and accordingly adopted a practical, experiential method by which he also achieved great success. It is that very method that Śrī Gurudeva has here converted into written form. The purport is that, in this scientific age of ours, only by explaining every subject in a scientific manner can a student quickly grasp even the most difficult subject. Therefore this Sanskrit grammar, which by tradition is grasped in a difficult form, he has made — in keeping with the age — extremely simple and easily comprehensible.

I do not think that, for students' understanding, any other commentary simpler, more lucid, and more substantive than this will be needed; because in this commentary the Gurudeva, keeping especially the beginning students and teachers in view, has never, anywhere, made a display of erudition. That is why in some places he has explained difficult topics again and again or in very great detail, while in some places simple topics have been stated very briefly. For those students who, not receiving a gurukula education, go to schools and colleges and are able to hear a topic from their teachers only once, this work can prove to be a boon.

In the same way, not only this, but also many other commentaries and original works of Śrī Guru-jī have been made keeping the learners in view; among these the noteworthy one is his original composition, the Ṛju-siddhānta-kaumudī. The reason behind the composition of this work too appears to be just this: for those students who, considering even works like the Laghu-kaumudī difficult, cannot study Sanskrit but yet wish to study, it was composed by collecting — together with a commentary in extremely simple and lucid language — only 600 sūtras of the Aṣṭādhyāyī. By studying it, a student can generally gain knowledge of all the essential topics pertaining to grammar.

In this way, however much one may say about the good works done by the revered Śrī Gurudeva for the welfare of all, and about himself, it is still too little; nevertheless I would certainly like to mention some events connected with myself. When the revered Śrī Gurudeva was teaching at Ayodhyā-jī, holding the post of Head of the Department of Grammar, there was but one refrain resounding in Ayodhyā — that if you wish to study grammar, go to Śrī Govindācārya-jī. That is why, while he was there, not only the students of his own school but also students of other schools kept thronging to study. Even at that time his fame in the art of teaching had spread to the farthest quarters; that is why not only people from around Ayodhyā but also students from distant places such as Nepal, Bhutan, Assam, and so on used to come to Ayodhyā to study. Among such students I too am one, who at that time was receiving primary education in some gurukula far from Ayodhyā. All the people there also told me the same thing — that if you wish to make an excellent study of Sanskrit grammar, go to Ayodhyā and study with him. It is a matter of great regret for me that, even after coming to Ayodhyā, I stayed there for only a short time, and even for as long as I stayed I could not remain in his close company. Because of this I did not get the opportunity to study more or to receive much from him. Nevertheless, from time to time I certainly kept receiving inspiration from him.

I remember that day of my childhood when I first met him. On that day, to raise the enthusiasm of all of us students, he was taking money out of his own pocket and rewarding the contestants of the ślokāntyākṣarī, sūtrāntyākṣarī, and the like. For me this was a golden opportunity to come to know his generosity and his love for students. After that, when I was staying for study in the regions of Vṛndāvana, Banāras, and the like, these words began to be heard there — that the revered Śrī Govindācārya-jī, for the welfare of the many, was giving up his limited scope of school work and, accepting an unlimited scope of social work, was imparting education to many students.

Coming to Delhi, you first — by the blessings of your ācārya Śrī Mukti-Nārāyaṇa Rāmānuja Jīyar Svāmī-jī, and by the grace of his good disciple Śrī Kamalanayanācārya-jī (Akhaṇḍa-jyoti Bābā), head of the Muktināth seat, and with the cooperation of his disciples — established the Śrī Muktināth Pīṭha Veda Vidyāśrama, and began teaching students, providing free food and lodging as well. After this, gurukulas of just this kind were established at places such as Caṇḍīgaṛh, Pañcakūlā, Bhivānī, Panvel, and so on, in which hundreds of students are studying the Veda, Vedāṅgas, and other śāstras free of charge.

In the meantime, when I had come from Mysore to Delhi for some reason, you at once formed the resolve to establish, at Mysore too, a special gurukula for higher education in the darśanas such as Nyāya and Vedānta. Earlier we had only heard about you from afar, but now we got the chance to experience you directly and to know you closely as well. The result of your good resolve was just this: that today, along with us, many students are getting the chance to study many higher works of Nyāya, Vedānta, and the like in the close company of the renowned philosopher, President's-Award laureate, author of various works, the sage and scholar, the revered Ācārya Śrī K. S. Varadācārya-jī, and of the one endowed with all good qualities, knower of the essence of all the śāstras, the passionless (vītarāga) revered Ācārya Śrī Jagannāthācārya-jī.

When, in your austere life, you were writing the commentary on the Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī, I again reached Delhi from Mysore. When I got some typed pages of the commentary to read, such a desire arose in me that I should examine and study this whole work and thereby settle many doubtful topics that had troubled me since my student days, and also learn the skill of the art of teaching in a new style. The revered Gurudeva at once heard my request and gladly gave me the opportunity to examine the work. And I too, not being satisfied with one reading, read the work from beginning to end three times over, whereby, along with the cutting away of all the knots of the work that were like my doubts, I also gained the benefit of understanding many topics. The revered Gurudeva gave the very name of 'editing the work' to this task of mine described above.

In truth, both tasks — the writing and the editing — have been done by the Gurudeva himself. If in this work anyone else has the greatest contribution, it is the Gurudeva's own daughter, Lakṣmī Śarmā, who fully cooperated in all tasks — the Gurudeva's writing and so forth, as well as the revision and the rest; likewise the two sons of the Guru, Jīvana Śarmā and Kṛṣṇa Śarmā, and the revered mother Śrīmatī Indirā Devī-jī, all gave their wholehearted cooperation. To complete this good work, others too cooperated, directly or indirectly.

In the end, I wish to give rest to my pen while remembering those great souls, by whose austerity and blessings the pure stream of our ancient culture and of the goddess of eloquence (Sura-bhāratī) flows on continually, whereby the thirst of many thirsting ones like us is being quenched, each according to his own receptive capacity. Foremost among such great souls is the one endowed with all good qualities, master of all the śāstras, established in Brahman, the passionless (vītarāga) saint, the most revered Śrī Jagannāthācārya-jī, who imparted to me the treasure of knowledge — first in the presence of Lord Śrī Raṅganātha at Vṛndāvana and later in the presence of Lord Śrī Satyanārāyaṇa at Mysore — and who is the greatest transformer and support of my life. In truth I have no words at all to say about him. To the lotus-feet of such a most revered Śrī Gurudeva, who ever dwells in my heart, I ceaselessly bow; and likewise I offer respectful salutations at the lotus-feet of the most revered Gurudeva Śrī Puruṣottama Tripāṭhī-jī — obtained by his very grace — a resident of Kāśī, master of the science of words (śabda-śāstra), devoted to austerity, free of craving, who even at the age of 80, daily bathing in the Gaṅgā and taking the darśana of Lord Śrī Viśvanātha, is causing the Gaṅgā of knowledge to flow, free of charge, for hundreds of people like us.

Again, I bow at the lotus-feet of that great philosopher and mighty yogī, like Śrī-Viśiṣṭa — the ācārya who re-established the sacred path of the Veda and propagated both Vedāntas, adorned with boundless glory, K. S. Varadācārya-jī — who by the search for truth has ascertained all subjects, settling them as 'thus it is' (idam ittham); who has reached very high in the spiritual field; and who even today, at the age of 85, keeps illuminating the truth of the darśana-śāstras such as Nyāya and Vedānta selflessly, through teaching and through the composition of various works. By the grace of the revered Ācārya Śrī Jagannāthācārya-jī, I too obtained the brief good fortune of staying in your close company.

There is yet one more great soul unforgettable to me, from whom I have continually received inspiration to advance toward my goal, and who is well-known for bringing about harmony and concord between the śāstra and society. At the feet of such a father-like, foremost among the learned, the revered Ācārya Śrī Jagannātha Kaṇḍel (Sampūrṇānanda Sanskrit University, Vārāṇasī) Guru-jī, I too wish to offer the bouquets that are my salutations. Finally, I offer such salutation as I can at the lotus-feet of my revered mother, father, initiating ācārya (dīkṣā-ācārya), the other gurus, and Lord Śrī-man-Nārāyaṇa.

Expressing my gratitude for the blessings and cooperation of all the above-mentioned great personages in making this work for the welfare of all, and offering a handful of flowers that are my heartfelt sentiments at the lotus-feet of the most revered Gurudeva Śrī Govindācārya-jī — who, regarding me as his very own child and loving me exceedingly, engaged me in the tasks of editing the work, study and teaching, and so forth, in order to make my future bright — I give rest to my pen.

One who seeks the grace of the true ācārya

Author's Submission

Sanskrit is the most ancient of all the languages of the world; on this all scholars are of one mind. Whatever fundamental knowledge has been created by human civilization in the world, all of it is well-established in the Sanskrit corpus like gems strung on a thread. That is why the saying of Vyāsa — yan nehāsti na kutracit, 'what is not here is nowhere' — is meaningful. In ancient times the development of Sanskrit was at its very peak. Now, decline and distortion are a law of nature; and so, successive decline too kept occurring. That is why not even a quarter part of the works of the Sanskrit corpus created in ancient times is available today. Even so, on beholding the many original works, commentaries, research works, and countless manuscripts now present in many libraries, our mind blossoms with pride. The key to this entire body of knowledge is grammar. Until we have knowledge of grammar, knowledge of language is impossible. When there is no linguistic knowledge, then there arises no question at all of the shining forth of the mass of knowledge contained in it. Therefore, for entry into all the śāstras, it is absolutely essential to have knowledge of language through the medium of grammar.

Even though grammar attained the highest reflection and pre-eminence in the Sanskrit world, today's world community is utterly unacquainted with Sanskrit grammar. Although there are many reasons for this, the fundamental reason is that, owing to the profundity of the subject, it has become abstruse. The Sanskrit world can never be equal to Maharṣi Pāṇini, because by composing the scientific work named the Aṣṭādhyāyī of Sanskrit grammar, he set the language in good order. The great-minded Kātyāyana and the spirited author of the Mahābhāṣya, Patañjali, added a crowning glory to it. To make the ancient method easily comprehensible, sages such as Bhaṭṭoji Dīkṣita composed the work named the Vaiyākaraṇa-siddhānta-kaumudī. His own disciple Varadarājācārya composed the Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī for students of tender intellect and for those wishing to enter the science of grammar. Of it, many commentaries are available in Sanskrit, Hindi, and other languages. On the basis of my own experience of study and teaching, the longing to compose one in the Hindi language and to set it down in writing in my own teaching style has today, by the grace of the Lord, been fulfilled.

At the age of ten, taking me up from my home and keeping me in his own lap, nurturing me and making me memorize the sūtras of grammar — he by whose particle of grace and exceeding affection I was able to obtain even a slight particle of knowledge of the ṣaṣṭhī and prathamā (sixth and first cases) of grammar — such was my revered guru, keeping me in his own home like his own son and bestowing education and initiation: the one adorned with boundless glory, now dwelling in Vaikuṇṭha, my revered guru Svāmī Śrī Śrīnivāsa Mukti-Nārāyaṇa Rāmānuja Jīyar Śrīdharācārya Svāmī-jī Mahārāja (an ācārya in these six subjects: grammar, literature, Śāṅkara Vedānta, Rāmānuja Vedānta, dharma-śāstra, and history) — whom I shall never be able to equal. While you were present on this earthly abode, I could do no such work for the gladdening of your countenance (mukhollāsa). If from this work even a little gladdening of your countenance should occur, I shall consider myself blessed. At present, the benediction of my kind-hearted guru-brother, who stands in your very place and is renowned in various fields, Svāmī Śrī Kamalanayanācārya-jī Mahārāja, head of the Muktināth seat, has continually been upon me, and I keep hoping for just this kind of blessing continually.

My source of inspiration since my student days — the profound scholar of the Sanskrit world, knower of the essence of grammar and the other śāstras, former Head of the Department of Grammar at Sampūrṇānanda Sanskrit University and former Vice-Chancellor of Maharṣi Maheśa Yogī University, Jabalpur, the most revered Ācārya Śrī Dr. Ādyā Prasāda Miśra-jī — his kind affection and blessings have been with me since my childhood, and during my teaching years you awakened and encouraged me in every way. When I made bold to show the present commentary to the revered Śrī Guru-jī, you examined it, gave necessary suggestions and guidance, and drenched me with the blessings of your gracious approval. I offer such salutation as I can at the feet of my ācārya. In what words shall I express my gratitude to you — I cannot find the words. Yes, this much gratitude I hold: that it is by your very blessings that this work could be accomplished.

I am no erudite scholar. Therefore various errors have naturally occurred. The thought that there might be some ease for the inquirers into Sanskrit grammar in understanding it — these considerations too impelled me to write this commentary.

In writing the Śrīdhara-mukhollāsinī Hindi commentary, I received great help from the Bhaimī commentary of Śrī Bhīmasena Śāstrī-jī, the commentary of Śrīdharānanda-jī, the Hindi commentary on the Siddhānta-kaumudī of Gopāladatta Pāṇḍeya-jī, the Aṣṭādhyāyī-bhāṣya (first edition) of Brahmadatta Jijñāsu-jī, and the Candrakalā commentary of Arkanātha Caudharī-jī. I am also extremely grateful to, and forever indebted to, these renowned commentators.

Though I am extremely little-learned, the attempt to write a commentary on the works of grammar is presumption on my part indeed. In this I have only made the attempt of breaking stone from the mountain; but the work of chiselling it and making it into a beautiful image has been done by my friend — the profound scholar of grammar, Nyāya, and Vedānta, full of learned devotion (sārasvata-sādhanā) even at a young age, simple-hearted, dedicated to study and teaching, Ācārya Śrī Raghunātha Śāstrī-jī. You have taken great pains, giving your invaluable time to editing the present commentary, making it simple, lucid, and delightful, and giving the work a right direction. Along with editing this commentary, you did the true bringing-out of the sense of the process (prakriyā) and the simplification of difficult and doubtful places, whereby I gained much benefit. The subjects I could not understand — through your editing I came to know many of them. Surely, by this work of yours the inquirers too will obtain much benefit. Although there is no limit to the depth of your knowledge, yet because you are younger than me in age, it becomes my duty to express my gratitude through benedictions. In the same way, Ācārya Śrī Keśavaśaraṇa Aryāl-jī of the Vālmīki Vidyāpīṭha, Kathmandu — who, though a Nyāyācārya, yet holds profound knowledge in the science of grammar — has, by his suggestions and cooperation, increased its excellence still further. So how shall I express my gratitude to you? Well, I consider myself much obliged to you. Therefore, offering the fragrant flowers that are my gratitude at the feet of all you scholars, I consider myself blessed; and I also bow my head to any other scholars and their works whose cooperation I obtained directly or indirectly.

This commentary has been written for students while carrying on the affairs of running the āśrama and doing daily teaching. Keeping the students' inquiries in view and resolving them, the various topics have been incorporated into the commentary. Therefore all my students too have, as far as possible, cooperated directly and indirectly. Among such great persons who, by giving much contribution to the āśrama's administrative work, provided me ample opportunity for writing this work, worthy of mention are: my wife, the fortunate Śrīmatī Indirā Śarmā; my two younger brothers, Ācārya Viṣṇu Prasāda Śarmā and Śyāma Prasāda Śarmā; the very affectionate Himālaya Bābā-jī and Ācārya Svāmī Prasāda Miśra; and Padmarāma Regmī-jī. Foremost among those who gave their invaluable cooperation in the earlier revision are Ācārya Śrī Sudarśana Nepāla-jī and my disciples and colleagues Janārdana Śarmā, Vāmana Śarmā, Lakṣmaṇa Ācārya, Puruṣottama Ācārya, Bābūrāma Ācārya, Badrīnārāyaṇa Gautama, and others. My affectionate daughter Lakṣmī Śarmā — who began the study of grammar from me and who, from the age of fifteen, has the courage to teach the Vaiyākaraṇa-siddhānta-kaumudī — has given a special contribution to the writing of the Śrīdhara-mukhollāsinī commentary; and the obedience of my two sons Jīvana Śarmā and Kṛṣṇa Śarmā, who provided all practical cooperation regarding the publication, is also highly praiseworthy. Therefore, bestowing blessings on all of them, I pray at the twin feet of the goddess of speech (Vāg-devatā) for her gracious glance upon them.

To any other scholars and their works whose cooperation was obtained directly or indirectly, this servant bows his head.

The inclination of scholars is generally toward the commentary and refinement of the Mahābhāṣya and glosses such as the Śekhara, Manoramā, Pradīpa, Uddyota, Bhūti, and the like; therefore they will scarcely find pleasure in an exposition of ordinary linguistic style such as the Śrīdhara-mukhollāsinī. Nevertheless, understanding it as an attempt to awaken interest in grammar among ordinary students through simplification, I hope that the learned will grant me pardon for my presumption; and likewise, if the learned would but point with a finger as to what further it would be proper to do for still greater simplification and comprehensibility, this servant would feel fulfilled and would take steps accordingly in the future.

He who has borne the responsibility of publishing this, and who today has done a very great service to the Sanskrit world through the publication of Sanskrit literature — such a one, Svāmī Śrī Navanīta Dāsa-jī of the Chowkhamba Surbharati Prakashan, Vārāṇasī, is surely worthy of commendation.

In the end, whatever good there is in this is the blessing of the scholars, and whatever is unacceptable is the rubbish born of my own dull intellect. Even so, since it is a work of sārasvata (devotion to learning), the learned will surely accept it.

Foreword

Among the ancient languages of the world, the Sanskrit language is the most ancient. Although language is defined as a fundamental means of the exchange of ideas, the Sanskrit language is not limited merely to this. We find the relation of every language with its respective nation not only socially and culturally but verbally too — as, for example, the language of Germany is called German, the language of China Chinese, and so on. But the naming of the Sanskrit language as 'Saṁskṛta' bears not any social or cultural cause, but rather the scientific pre-eminence of refinement and polish in itself. It has already been said that it is not merely a means of the exchange of ideas but the bearer and bestower of good saṁskāras.

The root cause of the tendency now growing in the world is precisely the absence of saṁskāra; or it may be said that today good saṁskāras are, as it were, becoming absent in the world.

Apart from establishing a well-cultured society and good thinking, we have no national or ethnic prejudice regarding Sanskrit. If education is related to saṁskāras, then saṁskāra is unthinkable without education. It is impossible for education to be transmitted and developed without language. Whether the fathomless store of the treasure of learning be worldly or transcendental — if it be preserved in any language, then, if we adopt that language and dive into it, surely our life cannot remain without being moistened (enriched). Such a language is Sanskrit. As for the fact that the infinitude of the knowledge contained in it, and the elegance and sweetness of the language, are universally known — the Vedas and the other śāstras are themselves the proof.

The whole world knows the land of India (Bhārata-bhūmi) as the place of the austerities of the ṛṣis. No austerity of the ṛṣis was prompted by self-interest. Its relation was with the social structure and system. The goal of the ṛṣis was solely the all-round welfare of living beings. Prompted by this very goal, they gathered up the conclusion of their reflection and austerity in the Sanskrit language. As a result, even today there are present before us the Vedas, Vedāṅgas, Upāṅgas, and so on. Grammar is the 'eye' (cakṣus) limb among the six limbs of the Veda. Unlike in the Western definition, where it is one branch of linguistics, in the Eastern stream of thought grammar is the principal (aṅgī) of language. Therefore it is said:

Chandas (metre) is said to be the two feet of the Veda, and Kalpa its two hands; Jyotiṣa (astronomy) is called its eye, and Nirukta (etymology) its ear; Śikṣā (phonetics) is the nose of the Veda, and grammar (vyākaraṇa) is deemed its mouth. Therefore, only by studying the Veda together with its limbs does one attain greatness in Brahma-loka.

That is, grammar is the mouth of the body that is the Veda. In the body, the mouth is indeed the principal thing. If there is no mouth, how can the body be nourished? That is why the author of the Mahābhāṣya has quoted: 'A brāhmaṇa should, without any ulterior cause, study and know the Veda together with its six limbs as a matter of duty; and among the six limbs grammar is the principal; and effort made on the principal thing becomes fruitful' (brāhmaṇena niṣkāraṇo dharmaḥ ṣaḍaṅgo vedo 'dhyeyo jñeyaś ca, pradhānaṁ ca ṣaṭsv aṅgeṣu vyākaraṇam, pradhāne ca kṛto yatnaḥ phalavān bhavati). That is, declaring the study of the Veda together with its limbs such as grammar to be indispensable — not from any ulterior cause but from a sense of duty — the pre-eminence of grammar among the six limbs is clear. In the context of the indispensability of grammar, one more maxim is current:

Although you may not study much, still, my son, at least study grammar — lest 'svajanaḥ' (one's own kinsman) become 'śvajanaḥ' (a dog-person), lest 'sakalam' (the whole) become 'śakalam' (a fragment), and 'sakṛt' (once) become 'śakṛt' (excrement).

That is: if you cannot study more, then at least study grammar. Otherwise, in one place svajanaḥ (one's own people) might become śvajanaḥ (a dog); likewise sakalam (the whole) might become śakalam (a fragment), and in place of sakṛt (once) it might become śakṛt (excrement). The purport is that without grammar linguistic correctness cannot come. And in the matter of Sanskrit especially, grammar has been absolutely indispensable. That is precisely why, among the many authors of Eastern grammar, the names of Indra, Candra, Kāśakṛtsna, Pāṇini, and others became particularly historic.

The Ācāryas of Grammar

'Brahmā spoke it to Bṛhaspati, Bṛhaspati to Indra, Indra to Bharadvāja, Bharadvāja to the ṛṣis, the ṛṣis to the brāhmaṇas' (brahmā bṛhaspataye provāca, bṛhaspatir indrāya, indro bharadvājāya, bharadvāja ṛṣibhya, ṛṣayo brāhmaṇebhyaḥ). Although from these statements quoted in the Mahābhāṣya it is learned that the original expounder of the science of words (śabda-śāstra) is Brahmā, yet today his śāstra on this subject is not available. Historians generally give the names of nine grammars, as (it is said):

The Aindra, the Cāndra, the Kāśakṛtsna, the Kaumāra, the Śākaṭāyana, the Sārasvata, the Āpiśala, the Śākala, and the Pāṇinīya.

Among these too, because it was composed adopting complete scientificity, the Eastern and Western thinkers and linguists took up the Pāṇinian grammar as the jewel in the chain of grammar. The unforgettable work of making it clearer and more language-oriented was done, respectively, by Kātyāyana and Patañjali. In the course of blossoming and flourishing in this land of India through the reflection and austerity of various scholars and sages, the Pāṇinian grammar later became divided, respectively, into two streams — the ancient (prācīna) and the new (navya). In the ancient stream are counted the sūtra-order explanatory works such as the Kāśikā composed by Jayāditya and Vāmana; while in the new stream come the process-works — the Vaiyākaraṇa-siddhānta-kaumudī composed by Bhaṭṭoji Dīkṣita and its explanatory works, the Prauḍha-manoramā, and the Laghu-śabdendu-śekhara composed by Nāgeśa, and so on.

Pāṇini and the Aṣṭādhyāyī

It must be said with regret that today the historical facts of those sages are not available in their true form; but perforce, only by inferential reflection is the decision made about their country, time, and so forth. For the Eastern thinkers and sages performed severe austerity and reflection in this land of India for selfless good social culture and good education, and not for their own prestige and honour. On the one hand, those ascetics made not only the sons of India but the whole world exceedingly blessed by giving them the butter-like essence of their own reflection and austerity — the fathomless mass of worldly and transcendental knowledge; while on the other hand, they were compelled to be deprived of a solid historical background, leaving in their own works only the void of the absence of their own ordinary self-introduction. This very problem we have to endure in the case of Pāṇini-jī as well. Even though there is an absence of definite history regarding the account of his life, from Patañjali's Mahābhāṣya (1-2-20) it is learned that his mother's name was Dākṣī. Regarding the time of Pāṇini-jī too there is a difference of opinion among scholars. Yudhiṣṭhira Mīmāṁsaka regards his date as about 2100 before Vikrama (era), while Dr. Vāsudevaśaraṇa Agravāla, describing him as a contemporary of King Nanda Mahānanda, has fixed it as 500 BCE. Some call Pāṇini a native of the Vāhīka country; yet the fact that the village named Śalātura was his birthplace is established on the basis of the Gaṇatantra-mahodadhi.

Pāṇinian grammar attains completeness only by becoming five-limbed (pañcāṅga), taking in not only the sūtras but also the Gaṇapāṭha, the Dhātupāṭha, the Liṅgānuśāsana, and the Uṇādi. In composing his own grammar, Pāṇini-jī is a great advocate of extreme brevity (lāghava) regarding the use of words. Therefore in the Pāṇinian grammar there is generally no word that is used twice or in vain. The reasons for this Patañjali-jī makes clear: 'The authoritative teachers, with a bunch of darbha grass in hand, sitting facing east in a pure spot, with great effort composed the sūtras. In such a case it is impossible for even a single letter to be without purpose — how much more, then, for a whole sūtra of this length!' (pramāṇa-bhūtā ācāryā darbha-pavitra-pāṇiḥ śucāv akāśe prāṅmukha upaviśya mahatā prayatnena sūtrāṇi praṇayati sma. tatrāśakyaṁ varṇenāpy anarthakena bhavitum, kiṁ punar iyatā sūtreṇa — Mahābhāṣya 1-1-1).

Not only for the knowledge of words, but also for gaining knowledge of the ancient Indian historical facts and principles, the Pāṇinian śabdānuśāsana has an extremely important place. From the study of this grammar, unobtainable information about the history and geography of that time also comes to hand for every inquirer. Therefore we can say without hesitation that the place of Pāṇinian grammar is the highest and most venerable.

The number of sūtras composed by Pāṇini-jī is about 4000. 'Vṛddhir ādaic' is the first and 'a a' is the last sūtra. Sūtras exist precisely to state the maximum subject-matter in brief, as (it is said):

Those who know the sūtra know a sūtra to be: of few letters (alpākṣara), free of doubt (asandigdha), pithy (sāravat), facing all sides / universally applicable (viśvatomukha), free of pause-fillers (astobha), and faultless (anavadya).

The capacity to convey much meaning with few letters, presentation of the subject free of doubt, the most essential process-sequence, the capacity to operate in all the necessary places, the absence of faults, and remaining unblameworthy — these are the six characteristics of sūtras. Such sūtras Pāṇini-jī has placed in six categories:

Saṁjñā (definition), paribhāṣā (meta-rule), vidhi (injunction), niyama (restriction), atideśa (extended application), and adhikāra (governing heading) — the characteristic of the sūtra is of six kinds.

Saṁjñā-sūtra, paribhāṣā-sūtra, vidhi-sūtra, niyama-sūtra, atideśa-sūtra, and adhikāra-sūtra. The vidhi-sūtras are the most numerous; fewer than them are the saṁjñā-sūtras. Likewise, the adhikāra-sūtras, paribhāṣā-sūtras, niyama-sūtras, and atideśa-sūtras are progressively fewer.

Kātyāyana and the Vārtika

Among those who, after Pāṇini, made the Pāṇinian grammar still more refined and accessible, the most important name is that of Kātyāyana. In fact this word ends in a gotra (lineage) suffix. In the view of Śrī Yudhiṣṭhira Mīmāṁsaka, "Kātyāyana" refers to none other than Vararuci — son of Kātyāyana, grandson of Yājñavalkya, and founder of the Āṅgirasa branch of the Śukla-Yajurveda — who lived in the 27th century before the Vikrama era. Other scholars, however, place him between 400 and 300 BCE. That he was a southerner (dākṣiṇātya) is established by the sentence found in the Mahābhāṣya, 'priyataddhitā dākṣiṇātyāḥ' ("southerners are fond of taddhita forms," 1.1.1). He composed a most important limb of the Pāṇinian grammar known as the Vārtika-pāṭha. Although it is not available today as an independent work, the vārtikas are cited in Patañjali's Mahābhāṣya; yet even from there their number cannot be ascertained. In the opinion of some scholars, Kātyāyana wrote vārtikas on about 1500 sūtras.

"That composition wherein reflection proceeds upon what has been stated, what has been left unstated, and what has been badly stated — that work the discerning knowers of vārtika call a vārtika."

Where, on account of what is stated (ukta), unstated (anukta), or badly stated (durukta) in the sūtras, the subject is not fully clarified or yields a different meaning, the supplementary sentences composed to resolve such situations are what the discerning call vārtikas — such as 'ṛlṛvarṇayor mithaḥ sāvarṇyaṁ vācyam' ("the mutual homogeneity of the ṛ and ḷ sounds must be stated"), and so on.

Patañjali and the Mahābhāṣya

After Kātyāyana, among those who unfolded and clarified the true import of the Pāṇinian grammar in the simplest language and made it advanced and meaningful, an extremely important name is added — that of Patañjali. In connection with the Pāṇinian grammar, his important composition is the Vyākaraṇa-mahābhāṣya. The name "bhāṣya" is given to that which describes the meanings of the sūtras and expounds them through its own comment. As it is said:

"That in which the meaning of the sūtra is described, in which the words are set forth in conformity with the sūtra, and in which one's own words are also explained — that the knowers of bhāṣya call a bhāṣya."

But because it bears its own distinctive excellence, it is called the Mahābhāṣya ("the great commentary"). It is a sūtra-following, explanatory, and extremely advanced work upon Pāṇini's collection of eight (the Aṣṭaka). "Other commentaries are [ordinary] bhāṣyas; this is the Mahābhāṣya" — and its greatness [is shown] by such regulatory statements as 'iṣṭādibhyo dvi-paryantānām eveṣṭiḥ' and the like.

Seeing the statements found in the Mahābhāṣya itself — 'aruṇad yavanaḥ sāketam' ("the Yavana besieged Sāketa"), 'aruṇe yavane mādhyamikām' (3.2.111), 'iha puṣyamitraṁ yājayāmaḥ' ("here we perform sacrifice for Puṣyamitra," 3.2.123) — some scholars have fixed his date at 200 BCE; but in the view of Yudhiṣṭhira Mīmāṁsaka it seems proper to hold it to be 1200 before the Vikrama era. Scholars are also not of one mind regarding Patañjali's birthplace. Taking as evidence the passage found in the Mahābhāṣya, 'abhijānāsi devadatta kaśmīrān gamiṣyāmaḥ, tatra saktūn pāsyāmaḥ' ("Do you recall, Devadatta, we shall go to Kashmir; there we shall drink barley-meal," 3.2.114), the learned say that Kashmir was his birthland; but in the view of others Patañjali was from Gonarda, while from the Mahābhāṣya it also seems that he was from Pāṭaliputra.

Patañjali was a scholar not only of the science of words but was also the author of the Yoga-darśana and of the science of medicine. It is renowned that Patañjali the author of the Mahābhāṣya is himself the author of the Yoga-darśana-sūtras and the Caraka-saṁhitā. As it has been said:

"To him who removed the impurity of the mind through yoga, of speech through grammar, and of the body through medicine — to Patañjali, the foremost of sages, I bow with joined palms."

That is: through the Yoga-sūtras Patañjali removed the impurity of the mind, through the sūtras of grammar the impurity of speech, and through the Caraka-saṁhitā the diseases of the body.

There were many commentators upon Patañjali's Mahābhāṣya, among whom Bhartṛhari, Kaiyaṭa, and others are the foremost.

Jayāditya-Vāmana and the Kāśikā-vṛtti

The next unforgettable name on the royal highway of the Pāṇinian grammar is that of Jayāditya and Vāmana. Upon the Pāṇinian grammar they composed the highly celebrated work called the Kāśikā, which follows the order of the sūtras. Today it is taken as the foundational work within the ancient stream of grammar. According to Śrī Anantaśāstrī Phaḍke, Jayāditya's date is 361 CE and Vāmana's is 670 CE. It was through the effort of these two that the Kāśikā attained completeness. It is said that the first five adhyāyas of the Kāśikā were written by Jayāditya and the last three adhyāyas by Vāmana. In presenting examples and counter-examples, the authors of this work generally adopted the style of the ancient vṛttis (glosses). For this reason these authors are also renowned by the name Kāśikā-vṛttikāra.

Bhaṭṭojidīkṣita and the Vaiyākaraṇa-siddhānta-kaumudī

While on one side the stream of the Kāśikā and the like flowed on in the Ganges of grammar, on the other side, because some difficulty was felt in the prevailing stream, teachers such as Rāmacandrācārya began the "procedure" (prakriyā) style by composing works like the Prakriyā-kaumudī. The greatest task of making this stream scientific and lucid was accomplished by Bhaṭṭojidīkṣita. Taking all of Pāṇini's sūtras and Kātyāyana's vārtikas, he composed the Vaiyākaraṇa-siddhānta-kaumudī. He is held to belong to the latter half of the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century. That this Maharashtrian brāhmaṇa Dīkṣita's father was named Lakṣmīdhara and his teacher was named Śeṣakṛṣṇa is established from the statements of the learned in various works. He also composed the very large work called the Śabda-kaustubha and, among the commentarial works on the Vaiyākaraṇa-siddhānta-kaumudī, the Prauḍha-manoramā and others.

Regarding the Kaumudī it has been said that if the Kaumudī is thoroughly mastered, then no toil need be spent on the Bhāṣya; and if the Kaumudī is not mastered, then too no toil need be spent on the Bhāṣya — that is, the toil would be in vain. The purport is that with full preparation of the Kaumudī the Mahābhāṣya becomes easy, and if there is no preparation of the Kaumudī then the Mahābhāṣya cannot be understood at all.

"If the Kaumudī comes [is mastered], toil upon the Bhāṣya is needless; if the Kaumudī does not come, toil upon the Bhāṣya is [equally] in vain."

Nāgeśa Bhaṭṭa and His Commentarial Works

In the "procedure" stream of the Pāṇinian grammar, a most well-known name for bringing maturity to it is that of Nāgeśa Bhaṭṭa. His time is held to be between 1673 and 1753 CE. A Maharashtrian brāhmaṇa, Nāgeśa was the son of Śivabhaṭṭa and Satī Devī. He wrote about a dozen works on the science of grammar, among which the Laghu-śabdendu-śekhara, the Vaiyākaraṇa-siddhānta-mañjūṣā, the Vaiyākaraṇa-siddhānta-laghu-mañjūṣā, the Vaiyākaraṇa-siddhānta-parama-laghu-mañjūṣā, the Paribhāṣendu-śekhara, and others are famous. Even now in Kāśī the study and teaching of these works continues in good order.

Varadarājācārya and His Prakriyā

Among those who made the "procedure" style of the Pāṇinian grammar simple and accessible, another name worthy of mention is added — that of Varadarājācārya. He was a disciple of Bhaṭṭojidīkṣita. His father's name was Durgātanaya. Among his compositions come the Madhya-siddhānta-kaumudī, the Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī, the Sāra-siddhānta-kaumudī, and other works, which are known as abridgements of Dīkṣita's Siddhānta-kaumudī. Of these three, to this day the Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī is the finest and the most famous, which has become almost everywhere the principal work of study for those seeking entry into grammar.

The Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī

The Vaiyākaraṇa-siddhānta-kaumudī, composed by his own teacher Bhaṭṭojidīkṣita, had already gained great fame in Varadarājācārya's time. Only mature and quick-witted inquiring students can study the Vaiyākaraṇa-siddhānta-kaumudī, because Bhaṭṭojidīkṣita constructed that Kaumudī taking up all the sūtras of Pāṇini's Aṣṭādhyāyī, by which the derivation of nearly all the words of the Veda, the Dharma-śāstra, the Purāṇas, and other works is possible. Through this work — replete with an extremely vast body, since at its end the accent (svara) and the Vedic procedure are added — the correctness of both worldly and Vedic words can be known. For beginning students it is very difficult to gain entry into the Vaiyākaraṇa-siddhānta-kaumudī. Taking this very matter to heart, Varadarājācārya composed the Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī. In it he took up only 1275 sūtras and strove to make it as simple as possible. He also rearranged the topics (prakaraṇas). The order of topics in the Vaiyākaraṇa-siddhānta-kaumudī is: saṁjñā-prakaraṇa, the five sandhis, the six genders (ṣaḍliṅga), the indeclinables (avyaya), the feminine affixes (strī-pratyaya), kāraka, compounds (samāsa), taddhita, the finite verb (tiṅanta), kṛdanta, and at the end the Vedic procedure and the procedure of accent. In the Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī, with some changes, the topics are the saṁjñā-prakaraṇa, the five sandhis, the six genders, the indeclinables, the finite verb, kṛdanta, kāraka, compounds, taddhita, and at the end the feminine-affix topic. First the knowledge of the technical terms (saṁjñās), thereafter the knowledge of sandhi, then after the procedure of nominal words (subanta) the topic of roots (dhātu) — this alone seems logical, because kṛt affixes come only from roots, and taddhita affixes can occur only after the state of being a stem (prātipadika) has arisen in kṛdanta words. Feminine affixes generally occur on the basis of kṛt and taddhita affixes. In the kāraka topic too, [rules] such as 'akathitaṁ ca' and 'kartṛkaraṇayos tṛtīyā', and the arrangement of what is stated and unstated (uktānukta-vyavasthā), and so on, support their coming after the root, the finite verb (tiṅ), and the kṛt. Therefore, placing the topic of roots in the middle, thereafter the topic of kṛt, then the topics of kāraka, samāsa, and taddhita, and at the very end the topic of feminine affixes, is well-reasoned. This very order Varadarājācārya has adopted in the Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī.

When the ācārya first composed the Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī and showed it to his teacher Bhaṭṭojidīkṣita, the latter was greatly pleased. Thereafter, when he composed the Madhya-siddhānta-kaumudī taking up 2315 sūtras, this did not please Bhaṭṭojidīkṣita, because — apart from the Vedic procedure — in its remaining topics this Kaumudī seemed to be a rival of the Vaiyākaraṇa-siddhānta-kaumudī. Today the study and teaching of the Madhya-siddhānta-kaumudī is less than that of the Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī and the Vaiyākaraṇa-siddhānta-kaumudī. Complete knowledge of grammar is possible only after the Vaiyākaraṇa-siddhānta-kaumudī. For entry into it, study of the Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī is necessary. Varadarājācārya regarded the Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī as an introductory primer, as is clear from his very invocation (maṅgalācaraṇa):

"Having bowed to the goddess Sarasvatī, I compose the pure and excellent Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī for [providing] entry into the Pāṇinian [grammar]."

The purpose of this work is only to attain the qualification for gaining entry into the Pāṇinian science of words.

In the Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī, Varadarājācārya has filled an ocean into a cup. Through its proper study, students of tender intellect and slight grasping power will easily be able to gain a general knowledge of grammar, and they will come to know each of the topics. Talented students will thereafter be able to enter directly into the Vaiyākaraṇa-siddhānta-kaumudī. There is no doubt that, from the standpoint of a primer, this is an extremely helpful aid for students who wish [to learn] grammar.

The Purport of Examples such as sudhyupāsyaḥ, madhvariḥ, dhātraṁśaḥ, lākṛtiḥ

Students should understand this too: that the purpose of grammar is not merely the knowledge of words and the knowledge of euphonic combination (sandhi), but along with that it is also to impel the learners toward spirituality. Śrī Bhaṭṭoji Dīkṣita and the commentators upon his works have paid special attention to this point. For instance, in place of the examples sudhyupāsyaḥ, madhvariḥ, dhātraṁśaḥ, lākṛtiḥ, they could equally have given madhvānaya, dadhyānaya, vadhvānaya, pitraṁśaḥ, and so forth. The secret behind giving the above examples is that the learner, along with knowledge of the words, should also gain knowledge of the object of worship, become acquainted with history and the like, and be inspired to understand and know the various Paurāṇic and Upaniṣadic events. Thus sudhībhiḥ upāsyaḥ (one who is worthy of being worshipped by the wise). Here, on the one hand, it is an inspiration that the sudhī (the wise/learned one) ought certainly to worship some chosen deity; and on the other hand there arises the curiosity: who is the one to be worshipped by the wise? That curiosity is fulfilled by madhvariḥ — the enemy of the demon named Madhu, that is, Lord Viṣṇu; so it is Lord Viṣṇu who is to be worshipped by the wise. Now, what is He like? To this curiosity came the answer: dhātraṁśaḥ. He is dhātuḥ aṁśaḥ, becoming a portion of Brahmā — that is, becoming Varāha and others from the body of Brahmā, or taking incarnation within the creation of the Creator (Dhātā) as Rāma, Kṛṣṇa, and so on. Therefore He is dhātraṁśa. Is it easy to attain Him? No. He is indeed lākṛti — that is, one whose form is bent like the letter lṛ. Hence He can be attained only through rigorous austerity and spiritual practice.

Concerning the Śrīdhara-mukhollāsinī Commentary

While studying and teaching, the need was felt for a commentarial work (ṭīkā) beyond the teacher's own oral explanation, so that students might understand fully; hence there arose again the attempt to write it in the common language, Hindi. In the very style and vocabulary in which I teach my students, I have made a small effort to render it into Hindi; and this commentary too was written under the name Śrīdhara-mukhollāsinī, so as to delight the countenance (mukhollāsa) of the one from whom I received, by a little measure of grace, the ability to understand from the very beginning (from nattvā sarasvatīṁ devīm onward) the ṣaṣṭhī-prathamā — namely my own preceptor (svācārya), the six-fold ācārya, adorned with endless glory, Svāmī Śrī Śrīdharācārya (this being his name before taking sannyāsa).

A Few Words of My Own

What ought to happen is that whichever language we are learning, or whose grammatical process we are acquiring knowledge of, the study and teaching should be conducted in that very language; yet today this is not being done in the case of the Sanskrit language. If, before entering upon the Kaumudī, one were made to memorize the tables of noun-forms (śabda-rūpāvalī) and verb-forms (dhātu-rūpāvalī), and then given a general knowledge of sandhi, samāsa, and so on, and only after that led into the Kaumudī, then there would be great ease in understanding grammar. In this way, today, according to the traditional method, the study and teaching of the Kāśikā and the Kaumudī is diminishing. One reason for this is also that the new system of education is now in force in the country, and the old system has not been simplified. Therefore students have begun to feel difficulty in memorizing the sūtra, the vṛtti, and the sādhanī (derivational procedure). As a result, students went on fleeing from the study of these works. Now it appears that only this much study remains: how to answer the short-answer questions asked in the examination.

Today a scarcity of those who study Sanskrit is visible everywhere; and those who study the most difficult ancient works, such as grammar, will perhaps in the future become rare. There is no need to repeat that, compared with all the languages of the world, the Sanskrit language is the oldest and richest. It is not merely a human language but also the language of the gods (devabhāṣā). All our scriptures on dharma, and the ritual scriptures (karma-śāstra) that impart saṁskāras, are also composed in the Sanskrit language. The Vedas too, which are called the treasure-house of knowledge, are written in the Sanskrit language alone. All our mantras too are in the Sanskrit language alone. The mantras that are in Sanskrit — can we translate them into Hindi and other languages and then recite them? Never. Take the Gāyatrī mantra itself: how would it seem if one translated the Gāyatrī into Hindi and then recited it? Hindi poetry, verse, and the like, translated into Sanskrit, cannot obtain that same relish (svārasya). The point of saying this is that every language has its own distinctive character.

One further distinctive feature of the Sanskrit language is this: just as the language was thousands of years ago, so it is spoken even today in the same way; whereas if we look at Hindi and other vernaculars, how different is the Hindi of a hundred or two hundred years ago, and the Hindi of Sūra, Kabīra, and Tulasīdāsa, from today's Hindi! In other languages, words are brought in from outside, some of which are counted as tatsama and some as tadbhava. For instance, today's modern instrument, the cell phone, is called in Hindi simply 'mobile phone.' If you were asked to say this in pure Hindi, what would you say? Hundreds, thousands — indeed innumerable — such words are found for which there is no word in pure Hindi; but in the Sanskrit language there is no such trouble, because the Sanskrit language has such a firm grammar that it does not allow its words to become corrupted and constructs new words in a scientific manner. Ask any knower of Sanskrit what the Sanskrit for 'mobile phone' is, and he will at once reply: sacala-dūravāṇī or sacala-dūrabhāṣaḥ. If you use these very words in Hindi as well, no one will say that Hindi has no word of its own; but by the admixture of English and the like, Hindi can only be established as a khichaḍī (jumbled) language. This is but one example. The point of saying this is that so rich a language of the gods is today being greatly neglected. For this neglect we too are, in some measure, a cause; because the ease suited to the age that ought to have been brought into the study and teaching of Sanskrit could not be brought.

The reflection that a course of study and teaching should be devised by adopting a method suited to the present time had been going on for many years. Having begun the study of grammar at the age of ten, by the time I reached the age of twenty the work of teaching had also begun. From then until today, for nearly twenty-two years, the uninterrupted teaching of works on the derivational process (prakriyā-grantha), commentarial works, and philosophical works has been going on. I taught especially the Laghusiddhāntakaumudī and the Vaiyākaraṇasiddhāntakaumudī. When I was appointed to the post of Head of the Department of Grammar at the Śrīnivāsa-bodhāyana-rāmānuja Sanskrit College, Ayodhyā, affiliated to Sampūrṇānanda Sanskrit University, Vārāṇasī, then, owing to the obligation of teaching the works of the Śāstrī and Ācārya classes, the teaching of the prakriyā works began to decline; so, apart from the college hours, I taught these prakriyā works in the morning until 10 o'clock and in the evening after 4 o'clock.

In this way the study and teaching went on; but a difficulty arose there: the students who came to study at the college were mostly eighth-grade pass, and they were in a hurry to sit for the Pūrvamadhyamā examination. In the grammar subject of the first year of Pūrvamadhyamā, the Vaiyākaraṇasiddhāntakaumudī is prescribed. Therefore their study of the Laghusiddhāntakaumudī could not take place. Those students who accepted my advice, we would teach the Laghusiddhāntakaumudī and afterward prepare them for some special usages of the Vaiyākaraṇasiddhāntakaumudī; and by the time they passed the Śāstrī, the students would somehow manage to understand the prakriyā work. In this way, by reconciling the syllabus prescribed for the examination with the traditional syllabus, matters were somehow carried on.

It was my wish that, before sitting for the Pūrvamadhyamā examination, students should commit the Laghusiddhāntakaumudī entirely to memory, so that further on the syllabus prescribed for the examination might also proceed properly; but on account of the haste to sit for the examination, only very few students could fulfill this wish of mine.

Ever since, having given up government service, I established the Śrī Muktināth Pīṭh Veda Vidyāśrama in Delhi in the Vikrama Saṁvat year 2056, and began study and teaching according to the gurukula tradition, and gurukulas were established at many places such as Chaṇḍīgaṛh, Pañcakūlā-Haryāṇā, Jayapur, Bhiwānī-Haryāṇā, Panvel, and so forth — and at those places it was decided that literate students of 8 to 12 years of age should be taken into the gurukula. From then on, the practice of teaching young boys too began; but here too a new experience occurred: that the little boys were feeling difficulty in grasping the hard usages of the Laghusiddhāntakaumudī. From this there arose in my mind the wish that a still smaller yet pithy prakriyā work should be composed, in which the widely current usages of sandhi, dhātu, śabda, kṛdanta, and taddhitānta would be included, so that boys of tender and adolescent age might grasp them easily. In this very reflection, I composed the original Ṛjusiddhāntakaumudī with exactly six hundred sūtras, had it typed on the computer, and began teaching students from the photocopies. By this, the younger students and those of very tender intellect found ease in study, and the students' interest increased. In due course the bare original Ṛjusiddhāntakaumudī was also published; but while teaching, whatever deficiencies appeared in it were corrected. Some sūtras were removed from it, and some further new sūtras were added.

Regarding the examples and counter-examples of the sūtras, at first the idea arose that, leaving aside the current usages of the Kaumudīs such as sudhyupāsyaḥ, other modern usages should be shown; but on reflecting seriously, the significance of those usages became clear, and so almost the very usages that are found in the Kaumudīs have been shown as examples.

In the Ṛjusiddhāntakaumudī, the difficult and little-current forms have been left out. For example, in vowel-sandhi (ac-sandhi), the sandhis such as yaṇ, ayādi, guṇa, vṛddhi, pararūpa, pūrvarūpa, and savarṇa-dīrgha are used more often, so these sandhis have been taken up here; whereas the sandhis such as etyedhatyūṭh and its related vārtika, ṭi-saṁjñā-prayukta sandhi, prakṛtibhāva sandhi, avaṅ, and the like are used but little in conversation and in simple speech. Therefore these have been left out. In consonant-sandhi (hal-sandhi), only ścutva, ṣṭutva, jaśtva, anusvāra, parasavarṇa, and tugāgama have been taken. Where by a single sūtra the establishment of many usages is being effected, that sūtra has been taken; and separate sūtras have not been taken for one or two usages. Those usages in which very many sūtras are employed — such usages have not been shown. The Pāṇinian sūtra, the style of the sūtra's meaning being one's own, and, apart from the examples and counter-examples of the Kāśikā and the Kaumudī, currently prevalent words have been taken. Throughout the entire Kaumudī, attention has been paid to this: that students should not feel difficulty, and that the process pertaining to each section (prakaraṇa) may be understood with ease.

It is my experience and also my belief that, for students desirous of becoming, through the medium of grammar, expert connoisseurs of the Sanskrit language, there will not be any other Kaumudī process simpler than this; because until now the Laghusiddhāntakaumudī has been prescribed in the curricula as the very simplest prakriyā work of today. It has 1275 sūtras, but the Ṛjusiddhāntakaumudī has only 600 sūtras — less than half of that.

I wish to say one more thing further: in my life up to now, I have met many such people who, for some reason, had not been able to study the Sanskrit language, yet even now, if some good guidance be obtained, ordinarily wish to study the language along with a knowledge of grammar. Hence the reflection was going on that some such simple means should be devised. Keeping these good people too in mind, my inclination arose toward writing the Ṛjusiddhāntakaumudī and its commentary.

The Ṛjusiddhāntakaumudī has not been written in competition with any other work; rather, it should be taken as an introductory (praveśikā) work, so that there may be help in taking up the Laghusiddhāntakaumudī and the Vaiyākaraṇasiddhāntakaumudī, and so that boys and inquirers may have a natural inclination toward them. Complete knowledge of words is possible only from the Vaiyākaraṇasiddhāntakaumudī. Therefore one who is desirous of becoming a complete grammarian should first study the Sārasiddhāntakaumudī or the Ṛjusiddhāntakaumudī, after that the Laghusiddhāntakaumudī, and after that the Vaiyākaraṇasiddhāntakaumudī. If, in the course of completing the Laghukaumudī after the Ṛjukaumudī, one also practices the sūtras of the Aṣṭādhyāyī and their sequence of continuation (anuvṛtti), it will be like gold with a fragrance added (sone pe suhāgā).

Although it is the teaching ācārya himself who will fully explain it to the younger students, and they ought not to have much interest in the commentarial work, still, if students are more inquisitive and wish to understand in a special way, they may read it.

The Śrīdhara-mukhollāsinī Commentary on the Laghusiddhāntakaumudī

After the Śrīdhara-mukhollāsinī commentary on the Ṛjusiddhāntakaumudī came into publication, many of my revered learned men repeatedly directed me to write, upon Varadarājācārya's three prakriyā works — the Sārasiddhāntakaumudī, the Laghusiddhāntakaumudī, and the Madhyasiddhāntakaumudī — a simple commentary like the Śrīdhara-mukhollāsinī on the Ṛjusiddhāntakaumudī; and several inquirers made me feel the hunger for it. So first of all my inclination arose toward writing the Hindi commentary on the shorter work, the Sārasiddhāntakaumudī. By the grace of God, the blessings of the elders, and the cooperation of friends, the Sārasiddhāntakaumudī was published, and its students benefited well. After that, the Śrīdhara-mukhollāsinī commentary on the Laghusiddhāntakaumudī is today in your hands. Now, as of today's date, the commentary on the Vaiyākaraṇasiddhāntakaumudī is being written, which is soon to be published.

For merely learning the Sanskrit language, there is not much need of grammar, because knowledge of a language can be acquired even through conversation; but for gaining scholarship in the Sanskrit language and for understanding the language of all those ancient works, the study of grammar is indispensably necessary. For students who, deeming Sanskrit difficult or grammar abstruse, run away, explaining it in simple Hindi can prove to be a boon. Inspired by this very thought, a full effort has been made, to the best of my ability, to make this Hindi commentary on the Laghusiddhāntakaumudī as simple as the very simplest.

The Distinctive Features of the Śrīdhara-mukhollāsinī

1. In simple Hindi language, an attempt has been made to explain the derivational process (prakriyā) in an exceedingly simple manner.

2. Through exercises and examination questionnaires placed here and there, a way is shown for evaluating the students.

3. While commenting on the sūtras, first the compound-analysis (samāsa), then the case-ending (vibhakti), thereafter the continuation (anuvṛtti) and governing rule (adhikāra), and after that the meaning of the sūtra in bold letters, have been given. At necessary places, a special exposition of the sūtras has been given.

4. In the original, before the sūtras, a clear indication of their prescriptive purport (vidheya) and of the definitional (saṁjñā) and similar sūtras has been made. From this it becomes clear which sūtra performs what function.

5. In the ṣaḍliṅga (six genders) section the forms of all the words, and in the tiṅanta (finite verb) section the complete forms of the more current verbal roots, have been given. At the beginning of the section, the derivation of nearly all the forms has been shown.

6. At the beginning of the tiṅanta section, the matters that must necessarily be known concerning the verb have been expounded in detail. For instance, the arrangement of transitive and intransitive (sakarmaka and akarmaka), the clarification of result (phala) and activity (vyāpāra), agent (kartā), object (karma), tense (kāla), parasmaipada and ātmanepada, and so forth.

7. The establishment of usages has been shown as much as possible.

8. While clarifying the matter of seṭ, aniṭ, and veṭ verbal roots, the kryādi-rule and the Bhāradvāja-rules have been mentioned at various places.

9. In the vibhaktyartha (meaning of case-endings) section, those sūtras which are very useful but are not studied in the Laghusiddhāntakaumudī have also been discussed.

As appendices, the Liṅgānuśāsana, the Gaṇapāṭha, and — in alphabetical (akārādi) order — an index of sūtras, an index of vārtikas, and an index of verbal roots have also been given.

10. The commentary has been written not by adopting the stance of a ṭīkākāra or vyākhyākāra, but by becoming the students' well-wisher (suhṛt), in a teaching style.

11. In the commentary too, refraining from a display of erudition, only simple words have been used as far as possible. The point of saying this is that this commentary has been written keeping in view the perspective of the present day.

12. In the course of studying this work, students have been given the inspiration to daily repeat the recitation of the Aṣṭādhyāyī sūtra-pāṭha. If they do so, they will certainly become great grammarians (mahāvaiyākaraṇa).

In the end, how far I have succeeded in this aim of simplification, only learned people will evaluate. If there be anything acceptable in it, they will drench it with their blessings; and in respect of the faults, informing us, they will surely grant an opportunity to correct the errors once — such is my trust. Although much effort has been made to make the book free of errors, still, on account of faults natural to human beings, occasionally inaccuracies remain. Hence it has been rightly said:

The subject is exceedingly forceful (or profound) and the mind is unsteady; therefore inadvertence is easy for the author. And the scribe and the printer are prone to error too — where, then, is there any absolute purity of a book? (atyurjitaṁ vastu calaṁ ca cittam…)
