The verse — decoded
L1example
kṣaṇam api pitṛ-koṭi-vatsalaṁ taṁ
kṣaṇam apieven for a single moment (api = even) adverbial accusative; it modifies the longing-to-see completed in L3–L4एक क्षण के लिए भी
pitṛ-koṭi-vatsalamwho is loving [toward the devotee] like ten million fathers accusative, describing taṁ / the Lordजो करोड़ों पिताओं के समान स्नेह करने वाले हैं — ऐसे उन्हें
taṁhim — that Lord accusative; the object of īkṣitum in L4उन (प्रभु) को
taṁ — him; pitṛ-koṭi-vatsalam — loving like ten million fathers; kṣaṇam api — even for a moment
Even for a single moment [my mind longs to see] him who is tender toward me like ten million fathers. This is the reverent, fatherly pole of the verse.
The opening line of an udāharaṇa illustrating the vaira (enmity) of prīti — the tender, reverent loving rasa — with the ujjvala / śṛṅgāra (amorous) rasa, the pairing named in L5 (4.8.55). The Lord's fatherly affection sets the reverent mood that will clash with the amorous nail-marks of L3.
L2example
sura-muni-vandita-pādam indireśam |
sura-muni-vandita-pādamwhose feet are worshipped by gods and sages bahuvrīhi, accusative, further describing the Lordजिनके चरण देवताओं और मुनियों द्वारा वन्दित हैं — ऐसे उन्हें
indireśamthe Lord of Indirā (Lakṣmī) accusative; indirā = Lakṣmī, so īśa = her husband and masterइन्दिरा अर्थात् लक्ष्मी के स्वामी को
sura-muni-vandita-pādam — whose feet gods and sages worship; indireśam — the Lord of Lakṣmī
— him whose feet gods and sages bow to, the Lord of Lakṣmī. The line piles up majesty (aiśvarya), deepening the reverent mood.
L3example
abhilaṣati varāṅganā-nakhāṅkaiḥ
abhilaṣatilongs, yearns 3rd-sg present; the subject is 'my mind' (mano me) in L4इच्छा करता है
varāṅganā-nakhāṅkaiḥ[to see him] bearing the nail-marks of beautiful women instrumental — the marks with which the Lord is adorned; Viśvanātha reads this phrase as the pointer to the śṛṅgāra-rasaसुन्दरियों के नखों के चिह्नों से (सुशोभित उन्हें)
[mano me] abhilaṣati — my mind longs; varāṅganā-nakhāṅkaiḥ [aṅkitaṁ prabhum] — [to see the Lord] marked by the nails of lovely women
My mind longs [to see him even] marked by the nail-scratches of beautiful women — the amorous pole. Viśvanātha notes this phrase brings in the śṛṅgāra-rasa.
L4example
prabhum īkṣituṁ mano me ||
prabhumthe Lord, the master accusative; the object of īkṣitumप्रभु को
īkṣitumto see, to behold infinitive completing abhilaṣatiदेखने के लिए
mano memy mind (mano) — mine (me) mano = nominative subject of abhilaṣati; me = genitive 'my'मेरा मन (इच्छा करता है)
me manaḥ — my mind; prabhum īkṣitum — to see the Lord; abhilaṣati — longs
— and it is my own mind that longs to see the Lord. So the same mind that reveres a fatherly, majestic Lord also craves to behold his lovers' marks.
L5conclusion
tatra prītasyojjvalenaiva |
tatrathere, in this case points back to the example just givenउस (उदाहरण) में
prītasyaof prīti — the tender, reverent loving rasa genitive; the mood whose enmity is being statedप्रीति-भाव का (जिसका वैर बताया जा रहा है)
ujjvalenawith the ujjvala — the amorous (śṛṅgāra) rasa instrumental of accompaniment: '[the enmity is] with…'
evaprecisely, and with that alone eva restricts: the clash here is specifically with the ujjvalaही (अर्थात् यहाँ विरोध विशेष रूप से उज्ज्वल के साथ है)
tatra — in this case; prītasya — of prīti; ujjvalena eva — [there is enmity] precisely with the ujjvala
So here the enmity is that of prīti — the reverent loving mood — precisely with the ujjvala, the amorous rasa. The verb 'there is enmity (vairam)' is left understood. The example shows the two moods jarring: reverence for a fatherly, majestic Lord set against relishing his lovers' nail-marks.
The naming line comes after the udāharaṇa (L1–L4) rather than before it: the example is given first, then labelled with the vaira it illustrates.
