rūpaṁ svarūpaṁ, bahu adhikam |
rūpaṁ svarūpaṁ'rūpaṁ' here means svarūpa — its own essential form'रूप' अर्थात् स्वरूप
bahu adhikam'bahu' means adhika — greater, in excess of the others'बहु' अर्थात् अधिक
rūpaṁ — means svarūpaṁ, its own form; bahu — means adhikam, greater.
Jīva pins down two words of the verse. 'Form' means the rasa's own essential nature; 'abundant' means greater than the rest.
A bare word-gloss (padārtha) fixing rūpa and bahu before the argument proper.

śeṣāḥ sañcāriṇo matāḥ iti — on the words 'the rest are passing ones'; tan-mate api — even on that view; sva-svādhārāt avyabhicāriṇau śṛṅgāra-śāntau — śṛṅgāra and śānta, never deserting their own substrate; sañcāriṇau iva — are only like passing ones; sva-svādhārāt vyabhicāriṇaḥ hāsyādayaḥ tu — but hāsya etc., which do desert their substrate; sañcāriṇaḥ eva — are passing ones outright; iti bhedāṁśe labdhe api — so, though a difference is obtained; yathā poṣakatāṁśena sahayogitāṁśa-bheda-vivakṣā tathā atra api — as a difference in the co-operating-aspect was meant via the nourishing-aspect, so here too; sa eva aṅgam iti-ādinā uktam iti darśitam — it was said by 'sa eva aṅgam' etc., and thus shown.
Jīva looks closely at the line 'the rest are passing ones.' Even granting it, he says, the 'rest' are not all alike. Śṛṅgāra and śānta never leave their own home-substrate, so they are only loosely called passing ones — passing-like. Hāsya and the others do leave their substrate, so they are passing ones in the strict sense. A real difference therefore survives inside the single label. And this is nothing new: just as back at 4.8.42, through the 'nourishing' angle, Rūpa meant to mark off a difference in the 'co-operating' angle, the same distinction is being made here. The words 'sa eva aṅgam' and what follows already showed it.
sva-svādhāra = the substrate (the character/situation) proper to each rasa. 'sa eva aṅgam' is the pratīka of BRS 4.8.42; Jīva reads the present verse as consistent with that earlier ruling on poṣaka (nourisher) versus sahayogī (co-operator).
