raudro jāta-cara-sva-priya-pīḍanatayā anusmṛtayātra gṛhyate |
raudraḥthe 'raudra' the verse called karuṇa's friend'रौद्र' शब्द से
jāta-cara-sva-priya-pīḍanatayāin the form of a harming of one's own dear one that had already happened jāta-cara = 'occurred earlier'; -tayā = 'as consisting of / by way of'पहले घटित हुए अपने प्रिय के पीड़न के रूप में
anusmṛtayāas recollected — recalled after the fact, not fury felt now instrumental: 'taken by way of the recollected [fury]'जिस [रौद्रता] का स्मरण किया गया है, उसके द्वारा
atrahere, in this verseयहाँ
gṛhyateis what is to be understoodग्रहण किया जाता है
atra — here; raudraḥ — the word raudra; jāta-cara-sva-priya-pīḍanatayā anusmṛtayā — as the recollected fury over a past harming of one's own dear one; gṛhyate — is to be understood.
The 'raudra' that befriends karuṇa is not fury felt now. It is fury remembered: one recalls some earlier harm done to a dear one, and that recollection is what the verse means by raudra.

vartamāna-tādṛśasya bhaya-mātra-janakatvāt ||
vartamāna-tādṛśasyasince a present fury of that same kind genitive: subject of 'produces'इस समय उपस्थित वैसे [रौद्र] का, यह इसलिए कि
bhaya-mātra-janakatvātproduces only fear [and so would feed bhayānaka, not karuṇa] ablative of cause: 'because it generates mere fear'क्योंकि वह केवल भय ही उत्पन्न करता है
vartamāna-tādṛśasya — of a present fury of that kind; bhaya-mātra-janakatvāt — because it produces only fear.
Why remembered and not present? Because a fury happening now rouses only fear — that would be the terror rasa (bhayānaka), not grief. Only the remembered injury feeds karuṇa.

raudra-padenaby the word 'raudra' instrumental: 'what the term denotes''रौद्र' पद से (जिसका यह अर्थ है)
pūrvotpannasya sva-priya-jana-pīḍanasyaof a harming of one's own dear person that had arisen earlier genitive: the object of the awareness in the next wordपहले उत्पन्न हुए अपने प्रियजन के पीड़न का
jñānenathrough the awareness of it instrumental: 'by coming to know that harm'उस [पीड़न] को जान लेने से
pūrvam eva jātaḥ yaḥ raudraḥthe fury that had thereby already arisen back then eva: 'already at that earlier time'पहले ही (उसी समय) उत्पन्न हुआ जो रौद्र
tasya smaraṇamthe memory of that fury genitive: 'of that raudra'उस रौद्र का स्मरण
atra gṛhyateis what is taken hereयहाँ ग्रहण किया जाता है
raudra-padena — by the word 'raudra'; pūrvotpannasya sva-priya-jana-pīḍanasya jñānena — through awareness of a harming of one's dear one that arose earlier; pūrvam eva jātaḥ yaḥ raudraḥ — the fury that had already arisen then; tasya smaraṇam — the memory of it; atra gṛhyate — is taken here.
Viśvanātha spells the same point out step by step. Earlier one came to know of some harm done to a dear one, and that knowledge had already kindled fury back then. The word 'raudra' here means the recollection of that past fury — not a fury felt in the present.

vartamāna-raudrasya tu bhaya-mātra-janakatvāt |
vartamāna-raudrasyaa present fury, by contrast genitive: subject of 'produces'इस समय उपस्थित रौद्र का
tubut — setting it against the remembered furyपरन्तु (स्मरण किए रौद्र से भेद दिखाते हुए)
bhaya-mātra-janakatvātproduces only fear ablative of cause: 'because it generates mere fear'क्योंकि वह केवल भय ही उत्पन्न करता है
vartamāna-raudrasya tu — but of a present fury; bhaya-mātra-janakatvāt — because it produces only fear.
A present fury, by contrast, would rouse only fear — so it cannot be what befriends karuṇa. Only the remembered fury can.

aneka-vidha-śṛṅgārāṇāṁ madhye sambhogātmaka-śṛṅgāra eva vairī ||
aneka-vidha-śṛṅgārāṇāṁ madhyeamong the many kinds of śṛṅgāra genitive + madhye: 'out of them all'अनेक प्रकार के शृंगारों में से
evaprecisely this one, and not the others eva singles out sambhoga against vipralambha, love-in-separationही (विप्रलम्भ को छोड़कर सम्भोग को ही अलग करते हुए)
vairīis the enemy [of karuṇa]शत्रु है
aneka-vidha-śṛṅgārāṇāṁ madhye — among the many kinds of śṛṅgāra; sambhogātmaka-śṛṅgāraḥ eva — the union-type śṛṅgāra alone; vairī — is the enemy.
Now for the śṛṅgāra named as an enemy. Love comes in many kinds. Viśvanātha marks off which one: it is only sambhoga, love-in-union, that opposes karuṇa. The word 'eva' shuts out the other kind — vipralambha, love-in-separation — which sits perfectly well with grief and longing, so it is no enemy of karuṇa.
