mura-mathana puras te ko bhujaṅgas tapasvī
mura-mathanaO Mura-mathana — slayer of the demon Mura, i.e. Kṛṣṇa vocative, addressing Kṛṣṇa by a name of his prowessहे मुर-मथन!
puras tehere in front of you puraḥ with te (gen.) = 'before you'तेरे सामने
ko bhujaṅgas tapasvīwhat is a wretched serpent [like me]? — a rhetorical 'I am nothing'यह बेचारा सर्प भला है ही क्या?
mura-mathana — O slayer of Mura; te puraḥ — before you; kaḥ bhujaṅgaḥ tapasvī — what [am I,] a poor wretched serpent?
O Kṛṣṇa, slayer of Mura — what is a poor serpent like me, here before you? Kāliya, in terror, belittles himself: he is nothing, a mere wretched snake in the Lord's presence.
An udāharaṇa of bhayānaka-bhakti-rasa, the devotional mood of fear — the words of the serpent Kāliya pleading with Kṛṣṇa. The lead-in yathā vā ('or again, as in') marks it as a further illustration of the rasa.

laghu-haram iti mā sma kārṣīḥ — do not think 'he is easy to strike'; dīnāya manyum mā sma [kārṣīḥ] — do not direct wrath at the wretched one.
Do not think, 'this one is a trifle, easy to strike down.' And do not turn your anger on me, a poor helpless creature. The one verb 'do not do' governs both pleas.

Yes, this offense of mine is grave — that is true. But it happened out of ignorance, not out of defiance. Kāliya concedes the wrong and pleads that it was unknowing.

tapasvī varākaḥ |
tapasvīthe word tapasvī in the verseतपस्वी अर्थात्
varākaḥmeans 'a wretched, pitiable creature'बेचारा, दयनीय
tapasvī — varākaḥ (a poor, pitiable one).
Jīva glosses 'tapasvī': here it is not 'ascetic' but 'wretched, pitiable' — a poor creature.
tapasvī literally 'one who performs tapas, an ascetic'; but idiomatically, as here, it means 'poor wretch, pitiable one' — the sense the context requires.

manyuḥ — krodhaḥ (anger).
manyuḥ — मन्यु; krodhaḥ — क्रोध
Jīva glosses 'manyu' as 'anger' — the wrath Kāliya begs Kṛṣṇa not to direct at him.
The mūla has manyum (accusative); Jīva cites the stem in the nominative, manyuḥ, to give its sense.

manyuṁ mā sma kārṣīḥdo not show your wrath [at me]क्रोध मत करो
bhagavat-tattva-jñāna-anantaram — once he knew the Lord's true nature; śaraṇāpannaḥ kāliyaḥ — Kāliya, having taken shelter; śrī-kṛṣṇam āha — says to Śrī Kṛṣṇa; tava puraḥ (agre) mad-vidhaḥ bhujaṅgaḥ tapasvī varākaḥ kaḥ — before you, what is a wretched serpent like me?; manyum mā sma kārṣīḥ — do not show wrath.
Viśvanātha sets the scene: once Kāliya recognized who Kṛṣṇa truly is, he surrendered and spoke. 'Before you, what is a mere snake like me, a poor wretched thing? Do not turn your wrath on me.' He reads 'puraḥ' as 'right in front (agre)' and takes 'what serpent, what wretch' as Kāliya's self-belittling — I am nothing before you.
Viśvanātha glosses tapasvī as varākaḥ ('wretched'), agreeing with Jīva, and fills out ko bhujaṅgaḥ with mad-vidhaḥ, 'a serpent like me'.
