L1definition
catuṣṭaye’pi vīrāṇāṁ nikhilā eva sāttvikāḥ |
catuṣṭaye api vīrāṇāmin [all] four kinds of vīra (hero) alike locative; api = 'even/too' — the point holds across the whole fourfold set, not just the battle-heroवीरों के चारों भेदों में भी — 'अपि' यह जताता है कि यह बात केवल युद्धवीर की नहीं, चारों प्रकार के वीरों पर लागू है
nikhilāḥ evaabsolutely all of them, without exception eva stresses that none is left outसभी के सभी — 'एव' से कोई भी छूटता नहीं
vīrāṇām catuṣṭaye api — in all four kinds of vīra alike; nikhilāḥ eva sāttvikāḥ — absolutely all the sāttvika-bhāvas [appear].
The verse now itemizes what goes into vīra-bhakti-rasa, the rasa of heroism. First the sāttvikas: in all four kinds of vīra (hero), every one of the sāttvika-bhāvas can show up, with none left out.
These two verses (17-18) are the lakṣaṇa (definition) that fixes the make-up of vīra-bhakti-rasa: which sāttvika-bhāvas belong (L1), which vyabhicāri-bhāvas belong (L2-L3), and what its sthāyi-bhāva (abiding emotion) is (L4-L6). The vīra is fourfold — traditionally dāna-vīra (hero of giving), dharma-vīra (of duty), yuddha-vīra (of battle), and dayā-vīra (of compassion). The sāttvika-bhāvas are the fixed set of involuntary bodily reactions (tears, horripilation, trembling, and so on).

avahitthikāḥconcealment — hiding one's true feelings last member of the running dvandva; the plural -ikāḥ ending closes the list-compound of L2 and carries into L3और अवहित्था (भाव को छिपाना) — यह द्वन्द्व समास का अन्तिम पद है, और बहुवचन का '-इकाः' अन्त इस पद-सूची को L2 में समेटकर L3 तक ले जाता है
garva-āvega-dhṛti-vrīḍā-mati-harṣa-avahitthāḥ — pride, agitation, fortitude, bashfulness, resolve, joy, concealment [and, from L3, the rest].
Now the vyabhicāri-bhāvas, the passing feelings that flit through the hero's mood. The list runs: pride, agitation, fortitude, bashfulness, resolve, joy, concealment — and it keeps going in the next line.
avahitthā is the deliberate hiding of a feeling one is actually having — a standard vyabhicāri-bhāva. It is not the absence of feeling but its concealment (e.g. masking fear or eagerness behind a composed face).

The list finishes: indignation, eagerness, envy, recollection, and so on. All of these, together with the ones named in the line before, are the vyabhicāri-bhāvas of vīra-bhakti-rasa. The 'and so on' leaves the door open — these are the leading ones, not a closed set.

tasmin — in it; yuddha-utsāha-ratiḥ — the love that is battle-enthusiasm; sthāyi-bhāvatayā — as the abiding emotion; uditā — is declared.
Now the heart of it. In vīra-bhakti-rasa, the sthāyi-bhāva — the one emotion that stays and holds the rasa together — is declared to be yuddhotsāha-rati: the love that takes the form of eagerness for battle. The next two lines define that term.

yā sva-śakti-sahāyādyair āhāryā sahajāpi vā |
which [desire] — sets up the definition completed in L6 feminine relative, picking up jigīṣā in L6जो (स्त्रीलिंग सर्वनाम, आगे L6 की जिगीषा की ओर संकेत करता हुआ)
sva-śakti-sahāya-ādyaiḥby one's own strength, by helpers, and the like instrumental of means; ādi 'and the like' keeps the means openअपनी शक्ति, सहायक आदि के द्वारा — तृतीया, साधन बतानेवाली; 'आदि' से साधन खुले रहते हैं
āhāryā[whether] worked up from outside, inducedआहार्य (बाहर से लाई गई, उत्पन्न की गई)
sahajā api vāor else inborn, arising on its own api vā = 'or even/alternatively' — the two ways it can ariseअथवा सहज भी (स्वाभाविक, जन्मजात) — 'अपि वा' से इसके उठने के दो प्रकार बताए जाते हैं
— which [desire]; sva-śakti-sahāya-ādyaiḥ — by one's own strength, by helpers, and so on; āhāryā — [is] induced; sahajā api vā — or else inborn.
The definition of yuddhotsāha begins. It is a desire that may come about in either of two ways: it can be worked up from outside — by one's own strength, by allies, and so forth — or it can be inborn, welling up on its own. Either way it counts.
This is a technical distinction. āhāryā means 'brought on, induced' — like courage a soldier musters from his training and the backing of his comrades; sahajā means 'inborn, natural' — like the fearlessness a born warrior simply has. The verse admits both as genuine yuddhotsāha, so neither the self-made hero nor the natural one is excluded.
L6definition
jigīṣā stheyasī yuddhe sā yuddhotsāha īryate ||
jigīṣāthe desire to conquer the noun the yā of L5 was pointing toजीतने की इच्छा — वही संज्ञा जिसकी ओर L5 का 'या' संकेत कर रहा था
stheyasīvery firm, rock-steady the desire must be settled and unwavering, not a passing wishअत्यन्त स्थिर, अडिग — यह इच्छा जमी हुई हो, कोई क्षणिक चाह नहीं
yuddhein battle — with fighting as its field locative fixing the object of the desireयुद्ध में — सप्तमी, जो इस इच्छा का विषय ठहराती है
that [desire]वह (इच्छा)
yuddha-utsāhaḥ[is what] 'yuddhotsāha' [names]युद्धोत्साह (नाम से)
īryateis called, is so termedकही जाती है
yuddhe — in battle; stheyasī jigīṣā — a rock-steady desire to conquer; — that; yuddha-utsāhaḥ īryate — is called yuddhotsāha.
And here is the payoff of the definition: a firm, unwavering desire to win in battle — that is what is called yuddhotsāha. The two marks are that it aims at victory in a fight and that it is steady, not fleeting.
jigīṣā is the desiderative noun from the root ji, 'to conquer' — literally 'the wish to conquer'. It is the technical core of the definition: yuddhotsāha is not battle-fury or bloodlust but a settled will to prevail.

Jīva heads off a worry. When the verse defines yuddhotsāha by the word 'jigīṣā' and so on, it is not really adding a brand-new definition. That special definition already sits inside the general definition of utsāha given earlier: 'utsāha is a swift mental power.'
Why cited: Jīva quotes the earlier general definition of utsāha (bha.ra.si 2.5.57) to show that this new definition of yuddhotsāha adds nothing separate — it already falls under the general one.

Viśvanātha unpacks the tight compound of L5 by pairing each source with each type. Take the first source, one's own strength: on that footing the desire can be induced, and it can also be inborn. He completes the pairing with the helper in the next sentence.
