bhavaty udayatīśvare suhṛdi hanta rājya-cyutir
bhavatiwhile you yourself are there — locative of bhavat, the polite 'you'; it stands in a locative absolute with udayati, and Viśvanātha spells the construction out: bhavati tvayi ... udayati satiजब आप — 'भवत्' (आदरसूचक 'आप') का सप्तमी रूप, क्रिया 'होता है' नहीं
udayatiand not merely there — risen high, in the ascendant present participle, locative absolute: 'while he is rising'; udaya is the word used of a heavenly body coming upउदय पा रहे हैं तब — जैसे आकाश में कोई ज्योतिष्पिण्ड ऊपर चढ़ता है
īśvareyou who are the master, the one with the power to arrange things agrees with bhavati / udayati in the same locative absoluteऔर वह भी प्रभु के रूप में — यह भी उसी सप्तमी में जुड़ा है
suhṛdiand their friend at that — the one whose heart is good toward them same locative absolute; su-hṛd = 'good-hearted one', the plain word for a well-wisherऔर सुहृद् के रूप में — भले हृदय वाले हितैषी के रूप में
hantaalas! the exclamation carries the whole irony of the line — the disaster is announced, not narratedहाय! — यह खेदसूचक उद्गार ही पूरी बात का व्यंग्य ढोता है; विपत्ति सुनाई नहीं जाती, घोषित की जाती है
rājya-cyutiḥthey slip out of their kingdom cyuti = a falling away, a slipping off; the abstract noun is the sentence's subject with bhavatu in L3राज्य का छूट जाना — 'च्युति' अर्थात् खिसक पड़ना, हाथ से निकल जाना
bhavati — while you yourself; udayati — are risen and in the ascendant; īśvare — you who are the master; suhṛdi — and their friend; hanta — alas; rājya-cyutiḥ — [there is] loss of the kingdom
bhavati — जब आप; udayati — उदय पा रहे हैं तब; īśvare — प्रभु के रूप में; suhṛdi — सुहृद् के रूप में; hanta — हाय; rājya-cyutiḥ — राज्य का छूट जाना
Nārada is speaking. He says: you are right there — and not just there, but risen high; you are the master, and you are their friend. And alas, the kingdom slips out of their hands. That is the shape of the whole first half: every clause of good fortune is placed next to a disaster.
जब आप प्रभु और सुहृद् के रूप में उदय पा रहे हैं, तभी — हाय! — राज्य हाथ से निकल गया।
An udāharaṇa — the lead-in reads prema, yathā—, 'prema, as in the following.' The verse illustrates prema, the deepened stage of the sthāyi-bhāva of sakhya; Viśvanātha adds that its definition is to be taken pūrvavat, 'as before', from where prema and the stages after it were already defined.

mukunda vasatir vane para-gṛhe ca dāsya-kriyā |
mukundaO Mukunda — you who give liberation vocative; the name is pointed, since the one who gives the highest gift is being told what his friends have gotहे मुकुन्द! — सम्बोधन; यह नाम जान-बूझकर लिया गया है, क्योंकि जो सबसे बड़ा दान देता है उसी को बताया जा रहा है कि उसके मित्रों को क्या मिला
vasatiḥ vanethey live in the forest vasati = a dwelling, a staying; vane locative, 'in the forest'वन में रहना — 'वसति' अर्थात् टिकना, बसेरा
para-gṛhe caand in somebody else's house para = another, a stranger; ca links this second disgrace to the firstऔर पराये घर में — 'पर' अर्थात् दूसरा, अपना नहीं; 'च' इस दूसरी दुर्दशा को पहली से जोड़ देता है
dāsya-kriyāthey do a servant's work kriyā = the doing, the job; dāsya = the condition of a servantदास का काम करना — 'क्रिया' अर्थात् करना, कामकाज; 'दास्य' अर्थात् नौकर की दशा
mukunda — O Mukunda; vasatiḥ vane — dwelling in the forest; para-gṛhe ca — and in another man's house; dāsya-kriyā — servant's work
mukunda — हे मुकुन्द; vasatiḥ vane — वन में रहना; para-gṛhe ca — और पराये घर में; dāsya-kriyā — दास का काम
O Mukunda, he says. Living in the forest. And in another man's house, doing a servant's job. Two more items in the same list: exile, then service under a stranger's roof.
हे मुकुन्द! वन में बसेरा, और पराये घर में नौकरी का काम।
Mukunda means 'the giver of mukti', liberation. Addressing him by that name while listing his friends' humiliations is the point of the address, not decoration.
'मुकुन्द' का अर्थ है मुक्ति देने वाला। अपने मित्रों की दुर्दशा गिनाते समय उन्हें इसी नाम से पुकारना सम्बोधन का असली मर्म है, केवल सजावट नहीं।

iyaṁ sphuṭam amaṅgalā bhavatu pāṇḍavānāṁ gatiḥ
iyamthis — everything just listed feminine, agreeing with gatiḥ; it gathers up rājya-cyutiḥ, vasatiḥ and dāsya-kriyā into one thingयह — स्त्रीलिंग, 'गति' के साथ; यह 'राज्य-च्युति', 'वसति' और 'दास्य-क्रिया' तीनों को समेटकर एक कर देता है
sphuṭamplainly, and no one is pretending otherwise adverbial neuter: 'evidently, openly'स्पष्ट रूप से, खुले तौर पर — क्रियाविशेषण
amaṅgalāis a wretched lot, the opposite of a blessing a-maṅgala = not auspicious; agrees with gatiḥअमंगल, अशुभ — 'गति' का विशेषण
bhavatuso let it be — I grant it, I am not arguing imperative; Jīva and Viśvanātha both read this as loṭ in the sense of atisarga, granting leave rather than commandingहो जाए, हुआ करे — यह लोट् आज्ञा नहीं, अनुमति है: 'भले ही ऐसा हो'
pāṇḍavānāmthe Pāṇḍavas' genitive with gatiḥपाण्डवों की — षष्ठी, 'गति' के साथ
gatiḥthe way things have gone for them, their condition gati = a going, hence 'the course one's life has taken, one's lot'गति — जीवन ने जो मोड़ लिया है, वही उनका भाग्य
iyam — this; pāṇḍavānām gatiḥ — lot of the Pāṇḍavas; sphuṭam amaṅgalā — plainly wretched; bhavatu — let it be so, granted
iyam — यह; sphuṭam — स्पष्ट रूप से; amaṅgalā — अमंगल; bhavatu — हो जाए; pāṇḍavānām — पाण्डवों की; gatiḥ — गति
This, plainly, is a wretched state of affairs for the Pāṇḍavas. Let it be. He is not denying the misery. He is conceding it, and the concession is the hinge — the verse turns on it in the next line.
पाण्डवों की यह गति खुले तौर पर अमंगल है — भले ही हो जाए।

parantu vavṛdhe tvayi dvi-guṇam eva sakhyāmṛtam ||
parantubut here is the other side of it the adversative; the commentators both quote just this word as the pratīka for the turnपरन्तु — यही वह विरोधवाचक शब्द है जिसे दोनों टीकाकार मोड़ के प्रतीक के रूप में उद्धृत करते हैं
vavṛdhehas grown — grown already, and it stands grown perfect (liṭ); the two commentators make both of its senses work — it states the thing as done and settled, and liṭ is the tense of what is out of one's own sightबढ़ ही गया — लिट् (परोक्ष भूत), जो बात को हो चुकी और जमी हुई कहता है
tvayitoward you locative of the object of love: their friendship is directed at youआप में, आपके प्रति — सप्तमी; प्रेम का विषय आप ही हैं
dvi-guṇam evatwice over, exactly doubled — no less eva holds the measure firm; the misfortune did not halve it, it doubled itदुगुना ही — 'एव' नाप को कसकर पकड़े रखता है: विपत्ति ने उसे आधा नहीं किया, दुगुना कर दिया
sakhya-amṛtamthe nectar that is their friendship amṛta = the deathless drink; the compound identifies the two — the friendship is the nectarसख्य रूपी अमृत — 'अमृत' वह पेय जो मरने नहीं देता; समास दोनों को एक ठहराता है — मित्रता ही अमृत है
parantu — but; tvayi — toward you; sakhya-amṛtam — the nectar that is their friendship; dvi-guṇam eva — exactly twice over; vavṛdhe — has grown
parantu — परन्तु; vavṛdhe — बढ़ ही गया; tvayi — आपके प्रति; dvi-guṇam eva — दुगुना ही; sakhya-amṛtam — सख्य रूपी अमृत
But the nectar of their friendship for you has grown — and grown to double. That is the whole verse in one stroke. Everything outward was taken away, and the one inward thing increased.
परन्तु आपके प्रति सख्य का अमृत दुगुना ही बढ़ गया।
The verse is built as a concession followed by a reversal: three ruins, a granted 'let it be so', and then parantu. The commentators treat that structure, not the vocabulary, as the teaching.
श्लोक की रचना ऐसी है — पहले स्वीकार, फिर पलटाव: तीन दुर्दशाएँ, फिर 'हो जाए' कहकर दी गई छूट, और तब 'परन्तु'। टीकाकार इसी ढाँचे को उपदेश मानते हैं, शब्दों को नहीं।

bhavaty udayatītithe verse beginning bhavaty udayati — pratīka: the opening words used as the verse's name'भवति उदयति' — यह प्रतीक है, आरम्भ के शब्द ही श्लोक का नाम बन गए
pāṇḍavānām ajñāta-vāsa-samayespoken at the time when the Pāṇḍavas were living unrecognised locative of time; ajñāta-vāsa is the technical name of the thirteenth year, the year they had to pass without being identifiedजब पाण्डव अज्ञातवास में थे उस समय — सप्तमी काल की; 'अज्ञातवास' तेरहवें वर्ष का पारिभाषिक नाम है, जो बिना पहचाने बिताना था
śrī-nārada-vacanamis what Śrī Nārada said the whole verse is thus a speech, addressed to Kṛṣṇaश्रीनारद का वचन है — अतः पूरा श्लोक एक भाषण है, जो कृष्ण से कहा गया
bhavaty udayatīti — the verse beginning 'bhavaty udayati'; pāṇḍavānām ajñāta-vāsa-samaye — at the time of the Pāṇḍavas' unrecognised living; śrī-nārada-vacanam — is Śrī Nārada's speech
bhavaty udayatīti — 'भवति उदयति' इत्यादि श्लोक; pāṇḍavānām ajñāta-vāsa-samaye — पाण्डवों के अज्ञातवास के समय का; śrī-nārada-vacanam — श्रीनारद का वचन
Jīva sets the scene. These are Nārada's words, spoken to Kṛṣṇa during the Pāṇḍavas' year of hiding. So the 'you' of the verse is Kṛṣṇa and the speaker is a third party looking on.
'भवति उदयति' वाला यह श्लोक पाण्डवों के अज्ञातवास के समय श्रीनारद का कहा हुआ वचन है।
ajñāta-vāsa, 'dwelling unknown', is the year the Pāṇḍavas had to pass without being recognised — the period in which the forest-dwelling and the servant's work of the verse belong.
'अज्ञातवास' अर्थात् बिना पहचाने रहना — वही वर्ष जो पाण्डवों को किसी की पहचान में आए बिना बिताना था; श्लोक में जो वनवास और दास का काम कहा गया है, वह इसी अवधि का है।

tatrathere, in that verse locative pointing back to the line just namedवहाँ, उसी में — अभी नामित पंक्ति की ओर संकेत
iyam amaṅgalā gatir bhavatv itias for 'let this wretched lot be theirs' — pratīka of L3, quoted so the grammatical remark has something to attach to'यह अमंगल गति हो जाए' — तीसरी पंक्ति का प्रतीक, ताकि व्याकरण की बात को टिकने की जगह मिले
atisarga-nāmnī yā kāma-cāra-abhyanujñāthere is a sense called atisarga — giving somebody leave to go ahead and do as they like kāma-cāra = acting at one's own pleasure; abhyanujñā = granting permission; atisarga is the technical name for itजो 'अतिसर्ग' नाम वाली, मनमाना करने की अनुमति है — 'कामचार' अर्थात् अपनी इच्छा से करना, 'अभ्यनुज्ञा' अर्थात् इजाजत दे देना
tasyāṁ loṭand the imperative here is used in exactly that sense loṭ is the imperative ending; tasyām = 'in that [sense]', the standard way of saying which meaning a form is carryingउसी अर्थ में यहाँ लोट् है — 'तस्याम्' अर्थात् 'उस अर्थ में', यह बताने की प्रचलित रीति कि रूप कौन-सा अर्थ ढो रहा है
tatra — in that verse; iyam amaṅgalā gatir bhavatv iti — the words 'let this wretched lot be'; atisarga-nāmnī yā kāma-cāra-abhyanujñā — that granting-of-free-rein which is called atisarga; tasyāṁ loṭ — the imperative stands in that sense
tatra — वहाँ; iyam amaṅgalā gatir bhavatv iti — 'यह अमंगल गति हो जाए' यह वाक्य; atisarga-nāmnī yā kāma-cāra-abhyanujñā — जो अतिसर्ग नामक मनमाना करने की अनुमति है; tasyāṁ loṭ — उसी अर्थ में लोट्
Jīva does grammar here, and it decides the tone of the verse. 'Let it be' is an imperative, but not an order. It is the imperative of atisarga — granting leave, saying 'go ahead, have it your way.' So Nārada is not commanding misfortune on them; he is conceding it, waving it through.
वहाँ 'यह अमंगल गति हो जाए' — इसमें जो 'अतिसर्ग' नाम की स्वेच्छाचार की अनुमति है, उसी अर्थ में लोट् लगा है।
An imperative can command ('go!'), invite, ask, or grant leave. atisarga is the last of these: the speaker stops resisting and lets the thing stand. A homely case — 'fine, eat it then' is not an order to eat. Read as a command the verse would be cruel; read as atisarga it is the setup for parantu.

ity āha – parantv itiand so he says 'parantu' the standard formula: the reasoning just given is why the verse's next word is what it isयह कहने के लिए 'परन्तु' कहा — यही चलती हुई रीति है: अभी जो कारण कहा गया, वही श्लोक के अगले शब्द का कारण है
teṣāṁ bhavati premātheir love for you bhavati is again the locative 'toward you' — the same word the verse used in tvayiउनका जो आपके प्रति प्रेम है — 'भवति' यहाँ भी वही सप्तमी 'आपमें' है, वही शब्द जो श्लोक में 'त्वयि' था
bhavatā kṛtair upakārair na janitaḥwas never produced by the favours you did them instrumental of the agent-cause with the passive janitaḥ: 'not begotten by...'; bhavatā kṛtaiḥ = 'done by you'वह आपके किए हुए उपकारों से नहीं जन्मा — 'जनित' कर्मवाच्य के साथ तृतीया कारणरूप में: 'इनसे उत्पन्न नहीं'; 'भवता कृतैः' अर्थात् आपके द्वारा किए गए
yataḥ — because; sā gatiḥ teṣāṁ na sakhyasya hāni-karī — that lot of theirs does their friendship no damage; pratyuta — on the contrary; tasyāṁ tasya vṛddhiḥ eva dṛśyate — in it only its increase is seen; ity āha parantv iti — so he says 'parantu'; teṣāṁ bhavati premā — their love toward you; bhavatā kṛtaiḥ upakāraiḥ na janitaḥ — was not produced by favours done by you
Why can Nārada let the misery stand? Because it costs the friendship nothing. In fact the opposite is what you see: inside that misery the friendship grows. That is why the verse turns with parantu. And then Jīva puts the principle bluntly — their love for you was never a product of the good turns you did them.
क्योंकि वह गति उनके सख्य की हानि करने वाली नहीं है। उलटे उसी दशा में उस सख्य की वृद्धि ही दिखाई देती है। यही कहने को श्लोक में 'परन्तु' आया। उनका जो आपके प्रति प्रेम है, वह आपके किए हुए उपकारों से पैदा नहीं हुआ।
upakāra is a favour, a helping hand. The claim is causal: if favours had generated the love, withdrawing them would have shrunk it. It did not, so they were not the cause.
'उपकार' अर्थात् एहसान, सहारा। बात कारण की है: यदि प्रेम को उपकारों ने ही जन्मा होता, तो उपकार हट जाने पर वह घट जाता। घटा नहीं, इसलिए वे उसका कारण नहीं थे।

asama-ūrdhva, 'no equal, no superior', is the standard pair used of Kṛṣṇa's qualities; anubhava is direct personal experience as against hearsay or inference — which is exactly the distinction Jīva will use again in s7–s8.
'असम-अनूर्ध्व', अर्थात् 'न कोई बराबर, न कोई ऊपर' — कृष्ण के गुणों के लिए यह जोड़ा बँधा हुआ है; और 'अनुभव' का अर्थ है स्वयं भोगकर जानना, सुनी बात या अनुमान से जानना नहीं — ठीक यही भेद जीव आगे सातवें-आठवें वाक्य में फिर काम में लाते हैं।

nirdhūyashake it right off gerund from ni-dhū, 'to shake out' — the homely image of shaking dust out of clothझाड़कर, फटककर — 'नि-धू' से बना पूर्वकालिक रूप, जैसे कपड़े से धूल झाड़ दी जाती है
sphurantaṁ taṁ premāṇamthat love of theirs which keeps flashing up sphur = to throb, flash, break out; the participle says the love is not dormant but breaking into viewउस स्फुरित होते हुए प्रेम को — 'स्फुर्' अर्थात् फड़कना, चमक उठना; यह कृदन्त कहता है कि प्रेम सोया हुआ नहीं, फूट पड़ रहा है
edhayantaḥ evaand do nothing but feed it and make it grow causative participle from edh, 'to thrive'; eva again shuts out any other effectबढ़ाते हुए ही — 'एध्' अर्थात् बढ़ना, उसी का प्रेरणार्थक कृदन्त; 'एव' यहाँ भी दूसरा कोई फल नहीं रहने देता
virājanteso they stand out in full light the main verb: the qualities are what is on display in this whole episodeसुशोभित होते हैं — मुख्य क्रिया: इस पूरे प्रसंग में जो चमक रहा है वह ये गुण ही हैं
iti bhāvaḥthat is the sense of it Jīva's closing formula for a paraphrase of the intentयही तात्पर्य है — जीव का अभिप्राय बताकर बात समेटने का चलता हुआ वाक्यांश
te ca — and those qualities; bhavad-udāsīnatā-mayaṁ teṣāṁ duḥkha-anubhavam — their experience of pain, which is made of nothing but your aloofness; nirdhūya — shaking it off; sphurantaṁ taṁ premāṇam — that flashing love; edhayantaḥ eva — doing nothing but making it grow; virājante — shine out; iti bhāvaḥ — that is the sense
te ca — और वे गुण; bhavad-udāsīnatā-mayam — आपकी उदासीनता से ही बने हुए; teṣāṁ duḥkha-anubhavam — उनके दुःख के अनुभव को; nirdhūya — झाड़कर; sphurantaṁ taṁ premāṇam — उस स्फुरित होते प्रेम को; edhayantaḥ eva — बढ़ाते हुए ही; virājante — सुशोभित होते हैं; iti bhāvaḥ — यही तात्पर्य है
Then Jīva names what the pain actually was. Their suffering was made of one thing only: your keeping your distance. And your qualities shake that suffering off them, feed the love that is already flashing up in them, and stand there shining. That is the sense of the verse.
और वे गुण उनके उस दुःख के अनुभव को — जो केवल आपकी उदासीनता से बना है — झाड़कर, उस फूट पड़ते प्रेम को बढ़ाते हुए ही सुशोभित होते हैं। यही तात्पर्य है।

vavṛdha iti siddhavan nirdeśād dārḍhyaṁ bodhayati |
vavṛdha itias for the word vavṛdhe, 'has grown' — pratīka of the verse's finite verb'ववृधे' — श्लोक की उसी क्रिया का प्रतीक
siddhavat nirdeśātbecause he states it as an accomplished fact ablative of reason; siddhavat = 'as already established'; nirdeśa = the way the thing is wordedक्योंकि उसे सिद्ध की भाँति कहा गया है — पञ्चमी कारण की; 'सिद्धवत्' अर्थात् जो पहले से हो चुका हो उस रूप में; 'निर्देश' अर्थात् कहने का ढंग
dārḍhyaṁ bodhayatihe makes you understand how firm it is dārḍhya = solidity, from dṛḍha, 'firm'; bodhayati = causes to be knownदृढ़ता का बोध कराता है — 'दार्ढ्य' अर्थात् पक्कापन, 'दृढ' से बना; 'बोधयति' अर्थात् जना देता है
vavṛdha iti — the word 'vavṛdhe'; siddhavat nirdeśāt — because it is worded as a done thing; dārḍhyaṁ bodhayati — conveys firmness
vavṛdha iti — 'ववृधे' यह शब्द; siddhavat nirdeśāt — सिद्धवत् कहे जाने के कारण; dārḍhyaṁ bodhayati — दृढ़ता का बोध कराता है
Now the tense. He did not say 'is growing'; he said 'has grown' — stated as finished and settled. Jīva reads that wording as telling us the growth is solid. It is not in progress and reversible; it stands.
'ववृधे' — इसे हो चुकी बात की तरह कहा गया है, इसी से वह दृढ़ता जना देता है।
The perfect (liṭ) presents an action as completed and standing. Saying 'it has grown' rather than 'it grows' is what carries dārḍhya, firmness — the grammar is doing the argument's work.
लिट् क्रिया को पूरी हुई और जमी हुई करके सामने रखता है। 'बढ़ता है' न कहकर 'बढ़ चुका' कहना ही दार्ढ्य को ढोता है — यहाँ व्याकरण ही तर्क का काम कर रहा है।

The same verb form does a second job. The perfect is the tense used for what lies outside the speaker's own sight. So Jīva reads it as a hint: this love is something only the Pāṇḍavas can get at, from inside, by experiencing it. Even Nārada is reporting from outside.
परोक्ष रूप में कहे जाने के कारण वह प्रेम उन्हीं के अनुभव से पाया जा सकता है।
anubhava-gamya, 'reachable by direct experience', is set here against what is reachable by inference — the contrast Jīva completes in the next sentence.
'अनुभवगम्य' अर्थात् जो साक्षात् भोगकर ही पाया जाए — इसे यहाँ उसके विरुद्ध रखा गया है जो अनुमान से पाया जाता है; यही भेद जीव अगले वाक्य में पूरा करते हैं।

And for us it is different. We do not have their experience. All we can do is see the marks of that love and reason back to it. Jīva says the verse hints at this rather than stating it — the tense alone carries it.
वह प्रेम हमारे लिए तो उसके देखे हुए चिह्नों से किए गए अनुमान से ही पाया जा सकता है — इतना वे संकेत से जना देते हैं।
Two ways of knowing are being separated: anubhava, having the thing directly, and anumāna, inferring it from signs — the way one knows there was fire from the smoke. The insiders have the first; readers of the verse have only the second.
यहाँ जानने के दो मार्ग अलग किए जा रहे हैं — 'अनुभव', अर्थात् वस्तु को स्वयं पा लेना, और 'अनुमान', अर्थात् चिह्नों से उस तक तर्क करना, जैसे धुएँ से आग का जानना। भीतर वालों के पास पहला है; श्लोक पढ़ने वालों के पास केवल दूसरा।

Viśvanātha opens by pointing backward. The definitions of prema and the stages after it have already been given; take them as they stand there. He is not going to redefine them here.
प्रेम और उसके आगे की अवस्थाओं का लक्षण पहले की भाँति ही जान लेना चाहिए।
A lakṣaṇa is the mark that picks a thing out. Viśvanātha's pūrvavat sends the reader to the earlier statement rather than repeating it — standard economy in a commentary.

Viśvanātha unpacks the grammar of the first line. bhavati is 'you', in the locative. He adds sati so you can see it is a locative absolute: while you — friend and master — are risen, the kingdom is lost. The clash is built into the sentence structure itself.
जब आप सुहृद् और प्रभु के रूप में उदय पा रहे हैं, तब राज्य का छूट जाना।
bhavati can be read two ways — the verb 'it becomes' or the locative of bhavat, 'you'. Supplying tvayi settles it, and supplying sati settles the construction.
'भवति' दो तरह पढ़ा जा सकता है — 'होता है' यह क्रिया, या 'भवत्' अर्थात् 'आप' की सप्तमी। 'त्वयि' जोड़ देने से यह तय हो जाता है, और 'सति' जोड़ देने से रचना तय हो जाती है।

sama-kālam is Viśvanātha's own addition to the reading: the simultaneity sharpens the contrast, since all three disasters coincide with the friend-master being at his height.
