suhṛdo na hi yāta kātarā
suhṛdaḥO friends — you good-hearted ones printed suhṛdo before na. Viśvanātha supplies he, so it is a vocative plural, an address to the other cowherd boys — not the subject. suhṛd, 'good-hearted', is the very word sakhya-rasa is built on.हे मित्रो! — छपा हुआ रूप 'सुहृदो' है, क्योंकि आगे 'न' है; विश्वनाथ 'हे' जोड़ देते हैं, अतः यह सम्बोधन का बहुवचन है, कर्ता नहीं। 'सुहृद्' अर्थात् भले हृदयवाला — वही शब्द जिस पर सख्य-रस खड़ा है
na hisurely do not — hi does not give a reason here; it stiffens the prohibition, 'do not, I tell you'.मत ही जाओ — यहाँ 'हि' कारण नहीं बताता, निषेध को कसकर पकड़ता है: 'मैं कहता हूँ, मत जाओ'
yātago, set off 2nd person plural imperative — the whole group is being held back at once.जाओ — मध्यम पुरुष बहुवचन की आज्ञा; पूरा समूह एक साथ रोका जा रहा है
kātarāḥfrightened as you are, in your alarm printed kātarā before harim; nominative plural agreeing with the boys addressed. It states their condition, not a second command.घबराए हुए — छपा हुआ रूप 'कातरा' है, क्योंकि आगे 'हरिम्' है; प्रथमा बहुवचन, सम्बोधित बालकों के साथ अन्वय। यह उनकी दशा कहता है, दूसरी आज्ञा नहीं
he suhṛdaḥ — O friends; kātarāḥ — alarmed as you are; na hi yāta — surely do not go.
suhṛdaḥ — हे मित्रो; kātarāḥ — घबराए हुए (तुम); itaḥ — यहाँ से; na hi yāta — मत ही जाओ
One of the boys speaks up to the rest. Friends — do not go running off, frightened as you are.
हे मित्रो! घबरा मत जाओ। तुम सब यहाँ से मत ही जाओ। बोलनेवाला स्वयं एक ग्वालबाल है और अपने साथियों को दौड़ पड़ने से रोक रहा है।
An udāharaṇa — an illustration in verse — of veṇu, the flute, as an uddīpana of preyo-bhakti-rasa, the rasa of friendship. The laharī is working through these one by one: rūpa, his form (3.3.81); śṛṅga, the buffalo horn (3.3.82); veṇu here; śaṅkha, the conch (3.3.84). The speaker is one cowherd friend, steadying the others.

harim anveṣṭum itaḥ sutāṁ raveḥ |
harimHari — him, the one you have lost sight of accusative, the object of the searching.हरि को — द्वितीया, खोजने का कर्म
anveṣṭumin order to search him out infinitive of purpose — this is why they would be leaving.खोजने के लिए — प्रयोजन बतानेवाला तुमुन्; इसी कारण वे यहाँ से निकलते
itaḥaway from here, off this spotयहाँ से
sutāṁ raveḥto the daughter of Ravi, the sun — the Yamunā accusative of the goal reached, with yāta. Ravi's daughter is the standard name for the Yamunā; Viśvanātha names her outright.रवि की पुत्री के पास — द्वितीया, 'जाओ' का गन्तव्य। 'रवि की पुत्री' यमुना का प्रसिद्ध नाम है; विश्वनाथ उसे खोलकर यमुना कहते हैं
itaḥ — from here; harim anveṣṭum — to search out Hari; raveḥ sutām — to the sun's daughter, the Yamunā; na hi yāta — surely do not go.
itaḥ — यहाँ से; harim — हरि को; anveṣṭum — खोजने के लिए; sutāṁ raveḥ — रवि की पुत्री (यमुना) के पास
You are about to leave this spot and head for the Yamunā to hunt for Hari. Do not.
हरि को खोजने के लिए यहाँ से रवि की पुत्री यमुना के तट पर मत जाओ। जाने का जो कारण उनके मन में है, वही यहाँ कह दिया गया है।
The Yamunā is the obvious place to look — that is where Kṛṣṇa's play with the boys usually goes. The verse blocks the obvious guess so it can point somewhere else.
यमुना ही खोजने का सबसे स्वाभाविक स्थान है — कृष्ण की बालकों के साथ क्रीड़ा प्रायः वहीं होती है। श्लोक इसी सहज अनुमान को रोक देता है, जिससे वह कहीं और संकेत कर सके।

amumthat one over there — the very one you are missing accusative of adas, which points at someone away from the speakers. Viśvanātha names him: Śrī Kṛṣṇa.उसको — 'अदस्' की द्वितीया, जो वक्ताओं से दूर खड़े किसी की ओर संकेत करती है; विश्वनाथ नाम खोल देते हैं — श्रीकृष्ण
atraright here, on this side set against itaḥ in line 2 — you would go away from here, but the news is arriving here. Viśvanātha ties atra to śikhare, the mountain peak.यहाँ — दूसरी पंक्ति के 'इतः' के सामने रखा गया है: जाना तो यहाँ से होता, पर समाचार तो यहीं आ रहा है। विश्वनाथ 'अत्र' को 'शिखरे' से जोड़ते हैं
vaiṇava-of the bamboo flute — vaiṇava is the adjective from veṇu; the compound is broken across the line and finishes with dhvani-dūtaḥ in line 4.वेणु-सम्बन्धी — 'वैणव' वेणु से बना विशेषण है; समास पंक्ति के अन्त में टूटा है और चौथी पंक्ति के 'ध्वनि-दूतः' में पूरा होता है
atra — right here; amum kathayan — telling of that one; vaiṇava-dhvani-dūtaḥ — the messenger who is the sound of the bamboo flute.
atra — यहाँ; amum — उसको (श्रीकृष्ण को); kathayan — कहता हुआ; vaiṇava- — वेणु का (आगे 'ध्वनि-दूतः' से पूरा)
Something right here is already telling us about him — the sound of the bamboo flute.
बाँसुरी की ध्वनि यहीं, इसी स्थान पर, उसकी बात कह रही है। जिसे तुम दूर खोजने जा रहे हो, उसीका समाचार यहाँ पहुँच रहा है।
veṇu is the uddīpana this verse exists to illustrate. Notice how it works: the flute is not described as beautiful, it is given a job — it carries word of Kṛṣṇa to his friends.
इसी वेणु को दिखाने के लिए यह श्लोक है। ध्यान दो कि वह कैसे काम करती है — बाँसुरी को सुन्दर कहकर वर्णन नहीं किया गया, उसे काम सौंपा गया है: वह कृष्ण का समाचार उनके मित्रों तक ले आती है।

dhinotigladdens, fills with satisfaction √dhi, 3rd person singular present. The same verb closes the rūpa verse at 3.3.81, dhinoti naḥ.तृप्त करता है, आनन्द से भर देता है — √धि, लट् प्रथम पुरुष एकवचन। यही क्रिया रूप-वर्णन के श्लोक ३.३.८१ को भी 'धिनोति नः' कहकर समाप्त करती है
naḥus — his friendsहमें
vaiṇava-dhvani-dūtaḥ — the messenger that is the sound of the bamboo flute; śikhare — on the peak; amum atra kathayan — telling of him here; naḥ dhinoti — gladdens us.
śikhare — शिखर पर; vaiṇava-dhvani-dūtaḥ — वेणु की ध्वनि रूपी दूत; naḥ — हमें; dhinoti — तृप्त कर रहा है
The flute-sound is itself our messenger. It is up on the peak, speaking of him, and it gladdens us where we stand. So there is no need to run anywhere.
पर्वत के शिखर पर बजती बाँसुरी की ध्वनि ही दूत बनकर हमें आनन्दित कर रही है। ध्वनि आ रही है, तो वे वहीं हैं — इसलिए दौड़ने की आवश्यकता नहीं।
dūta, 'messenger', is the figure the whole verse turns on. A messenger does two things — tells you where the person is, and brings you joy in the meantime. The flute-sound does both, which is why the alarm can stop.
पूरा श्लोक 'दूत' की कल्पना पर घूमता है। दूत दो काम करता है — यह बताता है कि वह व्यक्ति कहाँ है, और तब तक स्वयं आनन्द दे जाता है। वेणु की ध्वनि दोनों करती है, इसीलिए घबराहट शान्त हो सकती है।

Viśvanātha straightens the line into plain prose. O friends! You are frightened — but do not leave this spot and go off to the Yamunā to look for Hari. Three small fillings-in: he adds the word of address, he supplies 'you all' as the subject, and he names the sun's daughter as the Yamunā.
हे मित्रो! तुम सब घबराए हुए होकर, हरि को खोजने के लिए, इस स्थान से रवि की पुत्री यमुना के तट पर मत ही जाओ। विश्वनाथ ने तीन बातें खोल दीं — सम्बोधन, अनुक्त कर्ता, और यमुना का नाम।

atra — giri-śikhare parvatāgre, on the peak of the hill, at the mountain top; amum — śrī-kṛṣṇaṁ kathayan, telling of Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
atra — यहाँ; giri-śikhare parvatāgre — पर्वत के शिखर पर, पहाड़ की चोटी पर; amum śrī-kṛṣṇam — उन श्रीकृष्ण को; kathayan — कहता हुआ
Two words settled. 'Here' means up on the hilltop. And 'that one' is Śrī Kṛṣṇa. So the flute-sound stands on the peak and speaks of Kṛṣṇa from there.
'यहाँ' अर्थात् पर्वत के शिखर पर, पहाड़ की चोटी पर। और 'उसको' अर्थात् उन श्रीकृष्ण को कहता हुआ। इस प्रकार बाँसुरी की ध्वनि वहीं से कृष्ण की बात सुना रही है।
Placing 'here' on the hilltop is what answers the boys' fear. The sound is coming from the hill, so that is where he is — which is exactly why the run to the Yamunā would be wasted.
'यहाँ' को पहाड़ की चोटी पर टिका देना ही बालकों के भय का उत्तर है। ध्वनि पर्वत से आ रही है, तो वे वहीं हैं — और इसीलिए यमुना की ओर दौड़ना व्यर्थ होता।
