L1definition
uṣṇīṣe vakrimā līlā-sarasī-ruha-pāṇitā |
uṣṇīṣeon the turban there is — locative of place: the item is located on the uṣṇīṣa, the cloth wound round the headउष्णीष पर — सिर पर लपेटे हुए वस्त्र, अर्थात् पगड़ी पर
vakrimāa tilt, a slant set into the way it is wound nominative singular of vakriman, the abstract noun from vakra, "bent, crooked" — the quality of leaning to one sideटेढ़ापन — एक ओर को झुका हुआ होना
līlā-sarasī-ruha-pāṇitāand his hand carries a lotus turned round for play sarasī-ruha, "pond-born", is a lotus; līlā marks it as a plaything, not an offering. The -tā ending makes it "the fact of having a lotus in the hand", listed like the other ornamentsहाथ में लीला-कमल का होना — सरसीरुह अर्थात् सरोवर में उत्पन्न कमल, और 'लीला' बताता है कि वह खेलने की वस्तु है, चढ़ाने की नहीं
uṣṇīṣe — on the turban; vakrimā — a slant; līlā-sarasī-ruha-pāṇitā — a hand holding a play-lotus.
Rūpa is listing Kṛṣṇa's adornment. First: the turban is not wound straight — it is given a tilt. Second: there is a lotus in his hand, held simply to twirl, not for any ritual use. The sentence has no verb yet; it lands in the next line.

kāśmīreṇordhva-puṇḍrādyam iha maṇḍanam īritam ||
kāśmīreṇadrawn with saffron instrumental of the material used. kāśmīra, "the Kashmir thing", is the standard name for saffron; Viśvanātha glosses it below with keśaraकेसर के द्वारा — 'काश्मीर' अर्थात् कश्मीर की वस्तु, केसर का प्रसिद्ध नाम; विश्वनाथ आगे इसे 'केशर' कहकर खोलते हैं
ūrdhva-puṇḍrādyamthe upright mark on the brow, and the rest of it ūrdhva-puṇḍra = the tilaka drawn straight up; ādya, "beginning with", leaves the list open — these are samples, not the wholeऊर्ध्वपुण्ड्र आदि — ऊपर की ओर सीधा खिंचा हुआ तिलक इत्यादि; 'आदि' से गिनती खुली रहती है, ये नमूने हैं, पूरी सूची नहीं
ihahere — that is, for this rasa of friendshipयहाँ — इस प्रकरण में
maṇḍanamcounts as the adornment nominative, the predicate the whole list has been building toward: maṇḍana is what one is decked out withमण्डन — सजावट, जिससे कोई सज-धजकर रहता है; यही वह पद है जिसकी ओर सारी सूची चल रही थी
īritamis what has been declared past passive participle agreeing with maṇḍanam — Rūpa states it as settled teaching, not as his own new opinionकहा गया है — रूप गोस्वामी इसे सिद्ध सिद्धान्त के रूप में रखते हैं, अपना नया मत बताकर नहीं
uṣṇīṣe vakrimā, līlā-sarasī-ruha-pāṇitā, kāśmīreṇa ūrdhva-puṇḍrādyam — a slant in the turban, a play-lotus in the hand, the upright brow-mark of saffron and so on; iha — here; maṇḍanam — as the adornment; īritam — is declared.
Third: the upright tilaka on the forehead, drawn with saffron — and more of the same kind, since he says "and so on". All of this, he declares, is the adornment for this rasa. Notice that these are not general ornaments; they are named as what stirs the mood here.
maṇḍana here is an uddīpana — a feature of Kṛṣṇa that kindles the friends' love when they see it. That is why a tilted turban and a twirled lotus are worth a verse.

uṣṇīṣe dara-vakrimā kara-tale vyājṛmbhi-līlāmbujaṁ
uṣṇīṣeon your turban the verse opens with the same word as the definition — the example is quoting the list back item by itemउष्णीष पर — उदाहरण उसी शब्द से आरम्भ होता है जिससे लक्षण-श्लोक आरम्भ हुआ था
dara-vakrimājust a slight tilt dara- prefixed means "a little": not a lurch, a hint of a leanथोड़ा-सा टेढ़ापन — 'दर' अर्थात् किंचित्; लुढ़का हुआ नहीं, बस झुकाव का संकेत
kara-taleon the flat of your palm tala is the palm's surface — the lotus is resting there, being turned, not grippedहथेली पर — 'तल' हाथ का धरातल है; कमल वहीं टिका है, घुमाया जा रहा है, कसकर पकड़ा नहीं गया
vyājṛmbhi-līlāmbujaṁa play-lotus that has opened wide vyājṛmbhin, from vi-ā-√jṛmbh "to yawn, stretch open", says the petals are spread; Viśvanātha supplies the plainer vikasitaखिला हुआ लीला-कमल — 'व्याजृम्भिन्' अर्थात् पंखुड़ियाँ फैलाए हुए; विश्वनाथ इसके लिए सीधा शब्द 'विकसित' देते हैं
uṣṇīṣe — on the turban; dara-vakrimā — a slight slant; kara-tale — on the palm; vyājṛmbhi-līlāmbujaṁ — a fully opened play-lotus.
Now the illustration. A friend is speaking to Kṛṣṇa and simply describes what he is looking at: the turban leaning a little to one side, and a wide-open lotus lying on his palm for play. The address and the verb are still to come — the whole first half is just the picture.
An udāharaṇa of the maṇḍana defined in the preceding verse — the tilted turban, the play-lotus in the hand and the saffron ūrdhva-puṇḍra are taken up here one by one, in a friend's own voice.

The third item from the list: the upright tilaka on the forehead, fair and bright, with a dot of musk placed on it. The friend is not analysing — he is pointing. "And there on your brow, look."

peśalaḥso deftly put together peśala is both "lovely" and "skilfully made"; Viśvanātha takes the skill in a particular direction belowमनोहर, और साथ ही कुशलता से रचा हुआ — इस शब्द के दोनों अर्थ हैं; विश्वनाथ आगे इस कुशलता को एक विशेष दिशा देते हैं

Here is the point of the whole verse. O Keśava, today this handsome turnout of yours makes even Subala's head swim. A friend is telling Kṛṣṇa what his own dress is doing to his friends. Hear the name: su-bala, "good strength" — the strong one is the one going weak at the knees.

vikrāntaṁ kim uta svabhāva-mṛdulāṁ goṣṭhābalānāṁ tatim ||
vikrāntaṁand he is a man of daring accusative agreeing with subalam in the line before; vikrānta = one who strides out, valiant. Placing it here, after the verb, makes it the punch: even that oneपराक्रमी को — पिछली पंक्ति के 'सुबलम्' का विशेषण; 'विक्रान्त' अर्थात् डग भरकर चलने वाला, वीर।
kim utaso what is there to say about — the standard a fortiori turn: if the hard case is settled, the easy one follows on its ownतो फिर कहना ही क्या — कठिन पक्ष सिद्ध हो गया, तो सरल पक्ष अपने आप सिद्ध है
svabhāva-mṛdulāṁsoft by their very nature accusative, describing tatim; svabhāva = what a thing is by itself, so the tenderness is not a mood but a constitutionस्वभाव से ही कोमल — 'स्वभाव' अर्थात् जो वस्तु अपने आप में है; अतः यह कोमलता कोई क्षणिक भाव नहीं, बनावट ही है
goṣṭhābalānāṁof the women of the cowherd village goṣṭha = the cow-station, Vraja; abalā, literally "the strengthless one", is a common word for a woman — and it lands exactly opposite su-bala two words earlierव्रज की अबलाओं का — 'गोष्ठ' अर्थात् गोशाला, व्रज; और 'अबला' शब्द ठीक दो शब्द पहले आए 'सुबल' के सामने पड़ता है
tatimthe whole crowd of them accusative, the second object of āghūrṇayati carried over from the previous lineसमूह को — 'आघूर्णयति' का दूसरा कर्म, पिछली पंक्ति से खिंचकर आया
vikrāntaṁ subalam api āghūrṇayati — it sets even valiant Subala reeling; kim uta — what then of; svabhāva-mṛdulāṁ goṣṭhābalānāṁ tatim — the naturally tender crowd of Vraja's women.
And Subala is no soft man — he is vikrānta, one who strides into a fight. If your dress can make him sway, what about the whole company of Vraja's women, who are tender by nature to begin with? The argument runs from the hard case to the easy one. And the wordplay carries it: su-bala, "strong", against a-balā, "strengthless" — if strength itself is toppled, what of those the language already calls without strength.

bhāle kuṅkuma-divyad-ūrdhva-tilaka itithe words "on the brow, the upright tilaka shining with kuṅkuma" divyat is a present participle, "blazing, shining"; kuṅkuma is saffron paste. Read as a whole this is a different wording of the same brow-mark'भाले कुङ्कुमदिव्यदूर्ध्वतिलकः' — ऐसा भी; 'दिव्यत्' अर्थात् चमकता हुआ, और 'कुङ्कुम' केसर का लेप; पूरा मिलकर यह उसी ललाट-चिह्न का दूसरा शब्द-रूप है
vā pāṭhaḥis also found as a reading vā leaves the two side by side — it does not say which one is rightअथवा ऐसा पाठ है — 'वा' दोनों पाठों को साथ-साथ रहने देता है, यह नहीं कहता कि कौन-सा ठीक है
gaurā iti ādau — at the passage beginning gaura-; bhāle kuṅkuma-divyad-ūrdhva-tilakaḥ iti — the wording "on the brow, the upright tilaka shining with kuṅkuma"; vā pāṭhaḥ — is an alternative reading.

Jīva records a variant. Where our text has gaura-śrīr alike kilordhva-tilakaḥ, some manuscripts read bhāle kuṅkuma-divyad-ūrdhva-tilakaḥ — "on the brow, the upright tilaka ablaze with kuṅkuma". He sets it down and leaves it standing; he does not choose. Worth noting for the class: on the variant the saffron is named right there in the line, which lines it up with kāśmīreṇa in the definition verse.

vikrāntam api subalam — "even Subala, who is valiant"; iti anvayaḥ — such is the construal.
Jīva sorts out the syntax. In the metre, vikrāntam sits at the start of the last line, far from subalam api in the line before. Pull them together: "even Subala, and he a man of valour". The point of the verse depends on it — the wonder is not that someone was overcome, but that the strong one was.

Viśvanātha takes the definition verse first. The long compound just means: a hand that has a play-lotus in it. And kāśmīra, he says, is keśara — saffron. So the brow-mark of the definition is drawn in saffron, and nothing more exotic is intended.

Viśvanātha runs the sentence through. O Keśava, your outfit — and peśala, he says, does not mean merely pretty: it means expert at one thing, stealing the hearts of the beautiful women of Vraja. That outfit makes even Subala reel, Subala who is vikrānta, a man of real strength. Then he quotes the opening of the last clause and stops: kim uta svabhāva…, "and so on". Notice what his gloss does to the verse's force. The dress is trained on the women; that it should stagger a man is the surprise, and the kim uta then swings back to the ones it was aimed at all along.
