paugaṇḍa-madhya evāyaṁ harir dīvyan virājate |
mādhuryādbhuta-rūpatvāt kaiśorāgrāṁśa-bhāg iva ||
The verse — decoded
L1definition
paugaṇḍa-madhya evāyaṁ harir dīvyan virājate |
paugaṇḍa-madhyewhile he is right in the middle of the paugaṇḍa years locative of time — it says when, not where; paugaṇḍa is the boyhood age that runs from the fifth year to the tenthपौगण्ड अवस्था के बीच में — यह बताता है कि कब, कहाँ नहीं; पौगण्ड वह बाल्य अवस्था है जो पाँचवें वर्ष से दसवें वर्ष तक चलती है
evastill squarely in that age and no further along eva holds him inside paugaṇḍa — it is what makes the iva of the next line necessaryही — अर्थात् वे पौगण्ड के भीतर ही हैं, इससे बाहर नहीं
ayaṁ hariḥthis Hari — the one being described hereये हरि, जो सामने हैं
dīvyanat his play present participle of √div, 'to play, to sport'; the same root also carries 'to shine', which is why it sits so easily beside virājateक्रीड़ा करते हुए — 'दिव्' धातु का वर्तमान कृदन्त, जिसका अर्थ खेलना भी है और चमकना भी
ayaṁ hariḥ — this Hari; paugaṇḍa-madhye eva — while still right in mid-paugaṇḍa; dīvyan — at play; virājate — shines out
This Hari is still in the middle of his paugaṇḍa years. And there, at his play, he shines.
paugaṇḍa — the second of the boyhood ages in this reckoning, roughly the fifth year to the tenth; kaiśora, named in the next line, is the age that follows it.
L2definition
mādhuryādbhuta-rūpatvāt kaiśorāgrāṁśa-bhāg iva ||
mādhuryādbhuta-rūpatvātbecause his form is wondrous with sweetness ablative of cause, built on a -tva abstract over a bahuvrīhi: 'from his being one whose form is made wondrous by sweetness'. This is the reason the whole comparison holdsक्योंकि उनका रूप माधुर्य से अद्भुत बना हुआ है — यही सारी उपमा का कारण है (पञ्चमी हेतु में, बहुव्रीहि पर बना भाववाचक रूप)
kaiśorāgrāṁśa-bhāgone who has come into the first sliver of kaiśora kaiśora 'the youth-age' + agra 'front, opening' + aṁśa 'portion' + bhāj 'sharing in'; agra-aṁśa is the very first edge of that age, not the whole of itकैशोर के प्रथम अंश को पाये हुए — कैशोर अवस्था का बिलकुल आरम्भिक छोर, पूरी अवस्था नहीं
ivaas if — he only looks it; he has not actually left paugaṇḍaमानो — वस्तुतः नहीं, दीखने में ऐसा
mādhuryādbhuta-rūpatvāt — because his form is wondrous with sweetness; kaiśorāgrāṁśa-bhāk iva — he looks like one already touched by the first edge of kaiśora
Why does he shine so? Because his form is made wondrous by sweetness. So much so that he looks as if he had already stepped into the opening edge of kaiśora — though he has not.
Read L1 and L2 together and the point is a tension: eva pins him inside paugaṇḍa, iva lets him look older. Neither cancels the other.

s1gloss
mādhuryeṇa varṇa-puṣṭatādīnāṁ manoramatvenādbhutaṁ loka-vismaya-kārakaṁ rūpam ākāro yasya saḥ |
mādhuryeṇaby his sweetness instrumental of means — this is what makes the form wondrous; it unpacks the mādhurya- of the verse's compoundमाधुर्य के द्वारा — इसी से वह रूप अद्भुत बनता है; यह श्लोक के समास के 'माधुर्य' पद को खोलता है
varṇa-puṣṭatādīnāṁof the richness of his colour and everything else of that kind genitive plural depending on manoramatvena; ādi 'and the rest' leaves the list open — colour is only the first itemवर्ण की पुष्टता आदि गुणों का — 'आदि' कहकर सूची खुली रखी गई है, वर्ण तो पहला ही नाम है
manoramatvenabecause all of that is so delightful to the mind second instrumental of cause, spelling out how mādhurya works: not sweetness in the abstract, but features that steal the mindक्योंकि वे मन को हर लेते हैं — माधुर्य कोई निराकार बात नहीं, ये मनोहारी गुण ही उसका रूप हैं
adbhutaṁis wondrousअद्भुत
loka-vismaya-kārakaṁthat is, it makes everyone who sees it stare in amazement the gloss on adbhuta — 'wondrous' is cashed out as an effect produced in onlookers, not a quality sitting idle in himजो देखने वालों में विस्मय उत्पन्न कर दे — 'अद्भुत' का अर्थ उसके प्रभाव से बताया गया, न कि उनमें पड़े किसी निष्क्रिय गुण से
rūpam ākāraḥand rūpa here means his bodily shape a lexical gloss: rūpa could have been taken as 'beauty' in general, so they pin it to the figure itself'रूप' का अर्थ है आकार, अर्थात् शरीर की गढ़न — केवल सामान्य सौन्दर्य नहीं
yasya saḥhe is the one that form belongs to the standard way of unfolding a bahuvrīhi — it shows that mādhuryādbhuta-rūpa- in the verse is describing Kṛṣṇa, not naming a thingजिनका ऐसा रूप है, वे — बहुव्रीहि खोलने की सामान्य रीति, जिससे सिद्ध होता है कि यह समास कृष्ण का विशेषण है, किसी वस्तु का नाम नहीं
yasya — he whose; rūpam ākāraḥ — form, that is, bodily shape; mādhuryeṇa — by sweetness; varṇa-puṣṭatādīnāṁ manoramatvena — because the richness of his colour and the rest so delights the mind; adbhutaṁ loka-vismaya-kārakaṁ — is wondrous, a thing that makes the world stare; saḥ — he is that one
They open up the compound of the verse. rūpa means his bodily shape. It is wondrous — and wondrous means it makes everyone who looks stare. What makes it so is sweetness: the rich fullness of his colour, and everything else of that sort, all of it delightful to the mind. He is the one whose form is like that.
Jīva and Viśvanātha share this note. Two small moves worth naming in class: adbhuta is glossed by its effect on onlookers (loka-vismaya-kāraka), and rūpa is narrowed to ākāra, the figure, so the sweetness is located in the body itself.

tad-rūpatvāt kaiśorāgrāṁśa-bhāg iva vibhāti |
tad-rūpatvātbecause his form is that sort of form tad- reaches back and picks up everything just described in s1 — the commentators supply the antecedent the verse's compound left packedऐसा रूप होने के कारण — 'तत्' पीछे लौटकर ऊपर कही सारी बात को पकड़ लेता है; श्लोक के समास में जो दबा था, टीकाकार उसे खोलकर देते हैं
kaiśorāgrāṁśa-bhāg ivalike one who has come into the first sliver of kaiśoraमानो कैशोर के प्रथम अंश को प्राप्त हुए हों
vibhātihe shows up, he appears so supplied as the gloss on virājate — and note it is a verb of seeming-to-the-eye, which keeps the iva honestवैसे दीख पड़ते हैं — 'विराजते' के स्थान पर यही क्रिया दी गई, और यह दीखने की क्रिया है, इसीलिए 'इव' की मर्यादा बनी रहती है
tad-rūpatvāt — because his form is of that kind; kaiśorāgrāṁśa-bhāk iva — as one sharing the opening edge of kaiśora; vibhāti — so he appears
So: because his form is like that, he appears as though he had already taken on the first sliver of kaiśora.
vibhāti rather than 'is' — the sentence stays on the level of how he looks. He is still in paugaṇḍa.
s3conclusion
yathānyaḥ sarva-lakṣaṇa-sampanno rāja-kumāras tad-agrāṁśa-bhāk san virājate, tathā tasya kaiśorāgrāṁśa-bhāgas tu sarvato vilakṣaṇa ity arthaḥ ||

rāja-kumāraḥa princeराजकुमार
tad-agrāṁśa-bhāk sanwhen he does come into that opening edge of kaiśora san, the participle of √as, makes this the condition: it is on reaching that age that he shinesजब वह उस अवस्था के प्रथम अंश को प्राप्त होता है, तब — 'सन्' इसे शर्त बना देता है, अर्थात् उस अवस्था में पहुँचने पर ही वह शोभा पाता है
tathāin that same wayवैसे ही
tasyahis own — Kṛṣṇa's genitive; it marks the turn from the parallel case back to himउनका — षष्ठी; यहीं से बात उपमा से हटकर उन्हीं पर लौट आती है
kaiśorāgrāṁśa-bhāgaḥshare in that first sliver of kaiśoraकैशोर के प्रथम अंश का पाया जाना
tubut here the likeness breaks tu is the hinge of the whole sentence: yathā…tathā sets up the comparison, and tu at once refuses itपरन्तु — पूरे वाक्य की कील यही है; 'यथा…
sarvato vilakṣaṇaḥis unlike anyone's, on every side vi-lakṣaṇa 'of a different mark' answers sarva-lakṣaṇa-sampanna two clauses back — the prince has all the marks, Kṛṣṇa's is off the chart of marks altogetherसब प्रकार से विलक्षण — 'विलक्षण' अर्थात् और ही लक्षण वाला; यह दो वाक्य पहले के 'सर्वलक्षणसम्पन्न' का उत्तर है: राजकुमार में सब लक्षण हैं, पर उनका तो लक्षणों की गिनती से ही परे है
ity arthaḥthat is what the verse meansयही तात्पर्य है
yathā — just as; anyaḥ rāja-kumāraḥ — some other prince; sarva-lakṣaṇa-sampannaḥ — furnished with every good mark; tad-agrāṁśa-bhāk san — on coming into that opening edge of kaiśora; virājate — shines; tathā — so too; tasya kaiśorāgrāṁśa-bhāgaḥ tu — but his own share in that first sliver of kaiśora; sarvato vilakṣaṇaḥ — is unlike anyone's in every way; ity arthaḥ — that is the meaning
Here is the comparison, and here is where it stops. Take an ordinary prince, a boy with every good mark on him. When he reaches the first edge of kaiśora, he shines. Kṛṣṇa is like that — but only up to a point. His share of that first edge of kaiśora is unlike anyone else's, from every angle. So the iva of the verse does two jobs at once: it gives you the prince to measure by, and then it tells you the measure does not fit.
The analogy maps cleanly: the prince stands for any handsome boy entering kaiśora; the marks stand for ordinary beauty; the shining stands for how he looks at that age. It stops at tu. And the stopping is done by a word-echo — the prince is sarva-lakṣaṇa-sampanna, 'complete in all marks', while Kṛṣṇa is vi-lakṣaṇa, 'of another mark entirely'. Same word lakṣaṇa, opposite verdicts. Read the two aloud together and the sentence teaches itself.
