viṣam api sahasā sudhām ivāyaṁ
viṣam apieven poison — and poison of all things api marks the extreme case: not just anything, but poisonविष भी — 'अपि' से चरम दशा सूचित होती है: कोई साधारण वस्तु नहीं, अपितु विष तक
sahasāat once, without a flicker of hesitationसहसा, तत्काल ही
sudhām ivaas if it were nectar (sudhā)अमृत के समान
ayaṁthis one — the subject, whose verb comes in L2यह (सेवक)
ayaṁ — this one; viṣam api — even poison; sahasā — at once, without hesitation; sudhām iva — as if it were nectar; [nipibati — drinks down, L2].
viṣam api — विष भी; sahasā — सहसा, तुरन्त; sudhām iva — अमृत के समान; ayaṁ — यह (सेवक), वह इसे (पी लेता है)
This one drinks down even poison — poison of all things — the instant it is offered, as though it were nectar.
यह सेवक विष तक को सहसा अमृत के समान (पी जाता है)। जो सर्वथा विष है, उसे भी वह तुरन्त अमृत की भाँति ग्रहण कर लेता है।
The opening line of an udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) for rāga, the pitch of dāsya-love named in the lead-in 'rāgo, yathā': the stage where, for the beloved master's sake, deadly pain is tasted as delight and delight as pain. The verse is built as a chiasm — poison-tasted-as-nectar here in L1–L2, nectar-tasted-as-poison in L3–L4.
L2example
nipibati cet pitur iṅgitaṁ jhaṣāṅkaḥ |
nipibatidrinks it right down ni- intensifies √pā: drinks utterly, to the last dropपूरी तरह पी जाता है, अन्तिम बूँद तक — 'नि-' उपसर्ग √पा को तीव्र करता है
cetif — the whole act hangs on this one conditionयदि
piturif it is the father's — at the father's cue genitive: whose the hint isपिता का — षष्ठी: जिसका संकेत हो
iṅgitaṁan unspoken hint, a mere gesture of the wishसंकेत, इशारा
jhaṣāṅkaḥthe fish-emblemed one — the subject who drinksझषांक (मछली के चिह्नवाला)
jhaṣāṅkaḥ — the fish-emblemed one; cet — if; pitur iṅgitaṁ — [it is] the father's mere hint; nipibati — drinks it right down.
jhaṣāṅkaḥ — झषांक; cet — यदि; pitur — पिता का; iṅgitaṁ — संकेत (हो, तो उसे); nipibati — पूरी तरह पी जाता है
If his father so much as hints at it, the fish-emblemed one drinks it right down — the 'ni-' says utterly, to the last drop. No command is needed, only the unspoken wish.
यदि पिता का संकेत हो, तो झषांक उसे अन्तिम बूँद तक पी जाता है। स्वामी का इशारा पाते ही वह उस विष को पूर्णतया ग्रहण कर लेता है।
jhaṣa = fish; jhaṣāṅka = 'bearing the mark or emblem of a fish.' Neither Jīva nor Viśvanātha names the servant in the segments here, so the decode leaves him unidentified.
झष का अर्थ मछली है; झषांक अर्थात् 'मछली का चिह्न या ध्वज धारण करनेवाला।' यहाँ के अंशों में न तो जीव और न ही विश्वनाथ इस सेवक का नाम बताते हैं, इसलिए डिकोड में वह अनिर्दिष्ट ही रखा गया है।

tad-asammatiḥif [the father's] disapproval of it — a withholding of consent tat = the thing; asammati = non-consent, the nominative that 'syāt' governsउसके प्रति असम्मति — तत् = वह वस्तु, असम्मति = अस्वीकृति; यही 'स्यात्' का कर्ता (प्रथमा) है
yadiif — the mirror-condition to cet in L2यदि
syātshould there be, should it ariseहो जाए
yadi — if; tad-asammatiḥ — disapproval of it [from the father]; syāt — should arise; visṛjati — he flings it away.
yadi — यदि; tad-asammatiḥ — उसके प्रति असम्मति; syāt — हो जाए, (तो) visṛjati — त्याग देता है
And the other way round: if the father withholds his consent — if even a shade of disapproval falls on the thing — he flings it away.
यदि उस वस्तु के प्रति (स्वामी की) असम्मति हो जाए, तो वह उसे त्याग देता है। स्वामी की अनिच्छा जानते ही वह उसे छोड़ देता है।
Line 3 opens the mirror-half of the chiasm; its object is supplied by L4, 'that nectar.'
तीसरी पंक्ति चियास्म के प्रतिबिम्ब-अर्ध का आरम्भ करती है; इसका कर्म L4 से मिलता है — 'वह अमृत।'

sa eva — वही सेवक; tu — परन्तु; tāṁ ... sudhāṁ — उस अमृत को; viṣam iva — विष के समान; sadyaḥ — तत्काल (त्याग देता है)
That very same servant — where before it was poison-as-nectar — now flings that nectar away on the instant, as though it were poison. What decides the taste is not the thing but the master's will.
परन्तु वही सेवक उस अमृत को विष के समान तत्काल (त्याग देता है)। पहले जो विष को अमृत मानता था, वही अब अमृत को विष की भाँति तुरन्त छोड़ देता है।

evathis one alone eva restricts: only this reading, no otherही — 'एव' सीमित करता है: केवल यही पाठ, अन्य कोई नहीं

"viṣam api muditaḥ" ity-ādikamthe variant that begins 'viṣam api muditaḥ…''विषम् अपि मुदितः' इत्यादि पाठ
viṣam api sahasā ity-ādikam eva — the reading 'viṣam api sahasā…' alone; paṭhanīyaṁ — is to be recited; na tu — and not; 'viṣam api muditaḥ' ity-ādikam — the variant 'viṣam api muditaḥ…'.
viṣam api sahasā ity-ādikam — 'विषम् अपि सहसा' इत्यादि पाठ; eva — ही; paṭhanīyaṁ — पढ़ने योग्य है; na tu — न कि; "viṣam api muditaḥ" ity-ādikam — 'विषम् अपि मुदितः' इत्यादि पाठ
Jīva settles the text. Recite only the reading that opens 'viṣam api sahasā…'; do not recite the variant that opens 'viṣam api muditaḥ…'. So sahasā ('at once') is the authentic first-line word, not muditaḥ ('gladly').
'विषम् अपि सहसा' इत्यादि पाठ ही पढ़ने योग्य है, न कि 'विषम् अपि मुदितः' इत्यादि। अर्थात् यही पाठ शुद्ध है, वह दूसरा पाठ नहीं।
A pāṭha-niścaya — a ruling on the correct reading. Jīva knows a circulating variant with muditaḥ where the accepted text has sahasā, and rejects it, fixing sahasā as the reading to be recited.

Viśvanātha glosses the first half. He names the father: the 'father' whose hint it is, is Śrī Kṛṣṇa. Then he unpacks the verb — the 'ni-' of nipibati means nitarām, atiśayena, 'utterly, to an extreme.' The servant does not merely sip the poison; he drains it, exceedingly, because Kṛṣṇa wished it.
यदि श्रीकृष्ण का संकेत हो, तो यह सेवक विष को भी अमृत के समान अत्यन्त अतिशयता से पी जाता है। स्वामी का इशारा पाकर वह विष को भी अमृत मानकर पूर्ण भाव से ग्रहण करता है।
Viśvanātha does two things: (1) he identifies pitṛ ('father', L2) as Śrī Kṛṣṇa; (2) he glosses the intensive prefix ni- of nipibati with a pair of words, nitarām and atiśayena — 'utterly' and 'exceedingly.'
विश्वनाथ दो काम करते हैं: (1) वे L2 के 'पितृ' ('पिता') की पहचान श्रीकृष्ण के रूप में करते हैं; (2) वे 'निपिबति' के तीव्रता-सूचक 'नि-' उपसर्ग का अर्थ दो शब्दों से खोलते हैं — 'नितराम्' और 'अतिशयेन,' अर्थात् 'पूर्णतया' और 'अत्यधिक।'
