An objection lurks: for the eternal servants these faults (coughing, laughing, gossiping about secret pastimes) can never arise — so forbidding them would be pointless, an idle rule. Jīva's reply: even so, the prohibition is stated for one reason only — to teach present-day sādhakas who are cultivating that servant's mood. Understand it that way.

First Viśvanātha glosses the word: 'talk of secret play' means talk of amorous love. Then the same concern: since these faults are impossible for the eternal servants, there is really nothing there to prohibit. Yet the prohibition stands for one purpose only — to instruct present-day practitioners who are steeped in that mood. Understand it that way.
Where Jīva writes 'niṣedho'pi sa prasajjeta' ('even the prohibition would wrongly follow'), Viśvanātha writes 'niṣedho'pi na prasajjate' ('even the prohibition does not apply'). The two readings are left as they stand.
