subala-rūpo dvirephaḥthe 'two-r' one, in the form of Subala Viśvanātha fixes the first reading: dvirepha = Subalaविश्वनाथ पहला अर्थ स्थिर करते हैं — द्विरेफ अर्थात् सुबल
barbaraḥthat is, the barbara (blockhead) glosses dvirepha — barbara is itself a two-r word, hence dvirepha appliesद्विरेफ की व्याख्या — 'बर्बर' स्वयं दो 'र' वाला शब्द है, अतः उस पर द्विरेफ लागू होता है

subala-rūpo dvirephaḥ barbaraḥ — the two-r one, i.e. Subala, the blockhead; mādhavasya śrī-kṛṣṇasya mādhurīṇām asaṅgamāt — because he fails to meet the sweetnesses of Mādhava, Śrī Kṛṣṇa; apuṣpite vṛndāvane kathaṁ prāṇiti jīvati — in flowerless Vṛndāvana how does he breathe, i.e. live? pakṣe — on the other reading; dvirepho bhramaraḥ mādhavo vasantaḥ — dvirepha is the bee, Mādhava is the spring
Viśvanātha spells out the double meaning. First reading: the 'two-r one' is Subala — a barbara, a blockhead (barbara too has two r's, so dvirepha fits). Because he cannot meet the sweetnesses of Mādhava, that is Śrī Kṛṣṇa, how does he go on breathing — how does he live — in a Vṛndāvana stripped of flowers? Second reading: here the 'two-r one' is the bee, and Mādhava is the spring season. So the one verse asks at once how the bee survives without spring's blossoms and how Subala survives without Kṛṣṇa.
