L1definition
mṛdutā komalasyāpi saṁsparśāsahatocyate ||
mṛdutādelicacy, softness — the quality now being definedमृदुता (कोमलता, सुकुमारपन)
komalasya apieven of a soft thing api pushes to the limit — even a soft thing's touch, let alone a hard one'sकोमल वस्तु का भी — कठोर की तो बात ही क्या
saṁsparśa-asahatāthe inability to bear the touchस्पर्श को सहन न कर पाना
ucyateis called, is said to beकही जाती है (कर्मवाच्य)
mṛdutā — delicacy; komalasya api saṁsparśa-asahatā — the inability to bear even the touch of a soft thing; ucyate — is called.
Delicacy (mṛdutā) is defined here: it is not being able to bear even the touch of something soft. If even a soft thing's touch is too much, the tenderness is extreme.
The lakṣaṇa (definition-verse) of mṛdutā, delicacy, under the lead-in atha mṛdutā—.

The speaker marvels: ah, the tenderness of this youth, whose glow is that of a fresh raincloud! The verse opens the picture, and the next line will show just how fragile his body is.
An udāharaṇa illustrating mṛdutā, the delicacy defined in the previous line (2.1.340); spoken in wonder at the youth's fragile body.

Even from touching fresh, tender sprouts — the softest thing there is — his limbs fade and waste away. That is the delicacy the definition named. The single word aparajya, 'having faded,' is where the commentators divide.

aparajya nirvidya duḥkhitībhūyeti yāvat vivarṇībhūyeti vā ||
aparajyathe word aparajya — Jīva glosses it"अपरज्य" पद का अर्थ
nirvidyameans 'having lost heart, become wearied'खिन्न होकर, उकताकर
duḥkhitī-bhūya iti yāvatthat is to say, 'having become pained'अर्थात् दुःखी हो जाना — इतना ही तात्पर्य
vivarṇī-bhūya iti vāor else 'having become discolored, pale' vā suspends a second reading — Jīva leaves both standingअथवा विवर्ण (कान्तिहीन) हो जाना
aparajya — [the gerund] aparajya; nirvidya — means having wearied, lost heart; duḥkhitī-bhūya iti yāvat — i.e. having become pained; vivarṇī-bhūya iti vā — or else having become pale.
Jīva takes up the difficult word aparajya. First reading: nirvidya, 'having lost heart, grown weary' — that is (iti yāvat), 'having become pained.' Or (vā), a second reading: 'having become pale, discolored.' He offers both and does not choose between them.
Jīva's primary sense is the affective one — wearied to the point of pain; the pallor reading is only his suspended second option.

aparajya vivarṇībhūya śīryanti ||
aparajyathe word aparajya — Viśvanātha glosses it"अपरज्य" पद का अर्थ
śīryanti[and so] they waste awayझड़ जाते हैं, क्षीण हो जाते हैं
aparajya — the word aparajya; vivarṇī-bhūya — means having become pale; śīryanti — [so that they] waste away.
Viśvanātha reads aparajya plainly as vivarṇī-bhūya, 'having grown pale,' and runs it straight into śīryanti — the limbs turn pale and then waste away.
Distinct from Jīva: where Jīva's first sense is affective (wearied, pained), Viśvanātha takes only the pallor sense, which Jīva held as his second, suspended option.
