ambho-bhāra-bhara-praṇamra-jalada-bhrāntiṁ vitanvann asau
ambho-bhāra-bhara-praṇamra-jaladaof a fresh rain-cloud bowed low under its heavy load of water long tatpuruṣa: ambho (water) + bhāra-bhara (weight-burden) + praṇamra (bent down) qualifying jalada (cloud)जल के भार के बोझ से झुके हुए बादल
bhrāntimthe illusion, the mistaken impression (that he is such a cloud)भ्रम को, ऐसे भ्रम को कि यह बादल है
vitanvanspreading, casting all around present participle (śatṛ), nominative agreeing with asauफैलाता हुआ, उत्पन्न करता हुआ
asauthis one here (Kṛṣṇa, looming as the elephant)यह (कृष्ण)
asau — this one here; ambho-bhāra-bhara-praṇamra-jalada-bhrāntim — the illusion of a rain-cloud bowed low under its load of water; vitanvan — casting it all around.
Look at this one — Kṛṣṇa — throwing off the illusion that he is a fresh monsoon cloud, sagging low under the sheer weight of its water. A great dark elephant looks just like a rain-swollen cloud, and that is the image he is building.
An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) spoken in Kṛṣṇa's own voice. Per Jīva it is adduced here (with 'yathā vā') as a further example of the mood, one whose rasa is a semblance of rivalry (mātsarya-ābhāsa): Kṛṣṇa boasts like a rutting war-elephant, challenging his playmate Śrīdāma to mock-battle.

ghorāḍambara-ḍambaraḥ — his swelling roar fearsome; suvikuṭām hastārgalām utkṣipya — having flung up his stout bolt-bar of a trunk; durvāraḥ para-vāraṇaḥ — irresistible, a supreme elephant; ahaṁ kṛṣṇaḥ svayam — I, Kṛṣṇa, in person; puraḥ labdho'smi — have turned up right in front.
His trumpeting din is terrifying. He has flung up his stout trunk like a raised door-bolt. Unstoppable, a mighty tusker — I, Kṛṣṇa myself, have shown up right in front of you. Every word cuts two ways: para-vāraṇa is at once 'the best of elephants' and 'the warder-off of the enemy', and hastārgalā is both the elephant's trunk and a bolt-like arm.

Jīva: the thing in play here is a particular pastime of Kṛṣṇa's — subduing the wicked so as to protect his devotees. It works as a vibhāva both because Kṛṣṇa genuinely has that subduing character and because such a pastime is useful for kindling the mood.

Jīva sets up the next verse. In the earlier example ('Ah, sinner!') someone might fear that devotion is not really present, or does not show. So Rūpa gives one more example, this time displaying the mood as a rasa made of only a semblance of rivalry (mātsarya-ābhāsa) — and he flags it with the words 'yathā vā', 'or else, as follows'.

Jīva notes the alternative reading, 'ambho-bhāra-naman-navīna-jalada'. On that reading the word 'naman' ends in a present participle, and a present participle cannot join into a tatpuruṣa compound — so grammatically that reading will not compound cleanly. He records the point without endorsing the variant.

Jīva backs the pun with a dictionary. The Viśva-prakāśa gives 'āḍambara' three senses: a beginning/undertaking, an elephant's roar, and a war-drum or trumpet — all of which feed the elephant-and-battle imagery.

Jīva resolves the compound ghorāḍambara-ḍambaraḥ as a bahuvrīhi: 'ghora' is 'fearsome', and 'ḍambara' is the swelling display (āṭopa) of the 'āḍambara', the roar. So it describes him — Kṛṣṇa-as-elephant — as one whose trumpeting swell is terrifying.

Viśvanātha closes with the same dictionary line: the Viśva-prakāśa gives 'āḍambara' as a beginning, an elephant's roar, and a war-drum — the lexical warrant for reading it as the tusker's roar.
Why cited: Lexical authority (Viśva-prakāśa) for taking āḍambara as 'an elephant's roar', securing Viśvanātha's elephant-focused gloss of ghorāḍambara-ḍambaraḥ.
