kvāhaṁ tamo-mahad-ahaṁ-kha-carāgni-vār-bhū-
kva ahaṁwhere am I — how insignificant? kva…kva = 'where this, where that', a rhetorical measuring of an unbridgeable gap; ahaṁ is Brahmā, the speakerकहाँ मैं (ब्रह्मा) — 'कहाँ...कहाँ' कहकर एक न पटने वाले अन्तर को नापा जा रहा है
tamaḥ-mahat-ahaṁ-kha-cara-agni-vār-bhū-made of darkness (prakṛti), the mahat, the ego, ether, air, fire, water, and earth the eight coverings; first half of a compound that closes in L2. tamas = prakṛti, cara = airप्रकृति (तमस्), महत्तत्त्व, अहंकार, आकाश, वायु (चर), अग्नि, जल (वार्), पृथ्वी — ये आठ आवरण
kva ahaṁ — where am I; tamaḥ-mahat-ahaṁ-kha-cara-agni-vār-bhū- — [wrapped by] prakṛti, the mahat, the ego, ether, air, fire, water, earth …
kva ahaṁ — कहाँ यह मैं ब्रह्मा; tamaḥ-mahat-ahaṁ-kha-cara-agni-vār-bhū- — प्रकृति, महत्, अहंकार, आकाश, वायु, अग्नि, जल, पृथ्वी इन आठ आवरणों से घिरा हुआ
This is Brahmā, shrinking himself to nothing. 'Where — how tiny — am I?' Then he begins listing the layers that wrap the universe: prakṛti, the mahat, the ego-principle, and the five elements — ether, air, fire, water, earth.
ब्रह्मा प्रश्न उठाते हैं — कहाँ यह मैं? इन आठ आवरणों — प्रकृति, महत्तत्त्व, अहंकार, आकाश, वायु, अग्नि, जल और पृथ्वी — से घिरा हुआ। 'कहाँ...कहाँ' कहकर वे अपनी लघुता और भगवान् की अपरिमेयता के बीच का विशाल अन्तर नापते हैं। यह समास अगली पंक्ति में पूरा होता है।
An udāharaṇa of koṭi-brahmāṇḍa-vigrahaḥ, 'whose form holds millions of universes' — the quality defined just before at 2.1.199. Quoted from the Bhāgavata (10.14.11), Brahmā's prayer after Kṛṣṇa multiplied himself as the stolen boys and calves.

Jīva sets up the quotation. The point being illustrated is the line from 2.1.199, 'his form is joined with countless millions of universes.' This verse, he says, shows the greatness even of the mahā-puruṣa, the puruṣa-avatāra — whose single form already pervades every universe. And if that is true of the Puruṣa, how much more of Śrī Kṛṣṇa himself. That 'how much more' is the real force of quoting it here.
पिछले श्लोक (2.1.199) में कहा गया कि भगवान् अगणित करोड़ों ब्रह्माण्डों से युक्त हैं। उसी विषय में 'कहाँ मैं, प्रकृति...' यह श्लोक दिखाकर, महापुरुष (पुरुष-अवतार) में भी सर्वत्र ब्रह्माण्ड-व्यापी विग्रह का उदाहरण देकर, यह दिखाया गया कि श्रीकृष्ण की दशा में तो कहना ही क्या।
kaimutya (kaimutika-nyāya) is the a-fortiori argument — 'if even X, then how much more Y.' The verse literally praises the Puruṣa; Jīva reads it as praising Kṛṣṇa all the more.
कैमुत्य (कैमुतिक-न्याय) 'यदि इतने में भी, तो अमुक में कितना अधिक' — इस प्रकार का न्याय है। श्लोक शब्दशः पुरुष-अवतार की स्तुति करता है; जीव गोस्वामी इसे कृष्ण की और भी अधिक स्तुति के रूप में पढ़ते हैं।

kvāham iti tu vyākhyāyate—tamaḥ prakṛtiḥ, mahān mahat-tattvam, aham ahaṅkāra-tattvam, kham ākāśaṁ, caro vāyuḥ, bhūḥ pṛthvī |
kvāham iti tu vyākhyāyatenow the words 'kvāham…' are explained tu marks the turn from the framing to the word-by-word gloss'कहाँ मैं' इस पद की तो अब व्याख्या की जाती है — 'तु' शब्द भूमिका से शब्दशः व्याख्या की ओर मोड़ दिखाता है
tamaḥ prakṛtiḥtamas means prakṛtiतमस् = प्रकृति
mahān mahat-tattvammahat means the mahat-tattvaमहान् = महत्तत्त्व
aham ahaṅkāra-tattvamaham means the ego-principleअहम् = अहंकार-तत्त्व
kham ākāśamkha means etherखम् = आकाश
caraḥ vāyuḥcara means airचर = वायु
bhūḥ pṛthvībhū means earthभूः = पृथ्वी
kvāham iti tu vyākhyāyate — now 'kvāham' is explained; tamaḥ prakṛtiḥ; mahān mahat-tattvam; aham ahaṅkāra-tattvam; kham ākāśam; caraḥ vāyuḥ; bhūḥ pṛthvī
kvāham iti tu vyākhyāyate — 'कहाँ मैं' की व्याख्या की जाती है; tamaḥ prakṛtiḥ — तमस् प्रकृति; mahān mahat-tattvam — महान् महत्तत्त्व; aham ahaṅkāra-tattvam — अहम् अहंकार-तत्त्व; kham ākāśam — खम् आकाश; caraḥ vāyuḥ — चर वायु; bhūḥ pṛthvī — भूः पृथ्वी
Now Jīva decodes the compound word by word. tamas is prakṛti, primordial matter; mahat is the mahat-tattva; aham is the ahaṅkāra, the ego-principle; kha is ether; cara is air; bhū is earth. These are the coverings named in the verse.
अब 'कहाँ मैं' पद की व्याख्या की जाती है — तमस् का अर्थ प्रकृति, महान् का महत्तत्त्व, अहम् का अहंकार-तत्त्व, खम् का आकाश, चर का वायु, और भूः का पृथ्वी।
Jīva glosses six terms and passes over agni (fire) and vār (water); the verse itself names all eight coverings.
जीव गोस्वामी छह पदों की व्याख्या करते हैं और अग्नि तथा वार् (जल) को छोड़ देते हैं; श्लोक स्वयं आठों आवरणों का नाम लेता है।

These eight layers together, Jīva says, are exactly what other texts call the shell of the brahmāṇḍa — the hard rind of the cosmic egg. So the 'coverings' and the 'egg-shell' are one and the same thing.

etābhiḥ saṁveṣṭitaḥ yat aṇḍa-ghaṭaḥnamely the universe-pot that is wrapped by these eightइन (आवरणों) से लिपटा हुआ जो अण्ड-घट है
atra tataḥ bhinnatvena nirdeśaḥ tu — but here the designation as separate from that; śilā-putrasya śarīram iti-vat jñeyaḥ — is to be understood like 'the stone-figure's body'; etābhiḥ saṁveṣṭitaḥ yaḥ aṇḍa-ghaṭaḥ — that being the universe-pot wrapped by these
atra tataḥ bhinnatvena nirdeśaḥ tu — यहाँ उससे भिन्नता के रूप में जो निर्देश है वह तो; śilā-putrasya śarīram iti-vat jñeyaḥ — 'पत्थर की मूर्ति का शरीर' के समान जानना चाहिए; etābhiḥ saṁveṣṭitaḥ yat aṇḍa-ghaṭaḥ — इन आवरणों से लिपटा जो अण्ड-घट
The verse speaks of the body as though it were something other than the shell. Jīva says take that the way we say 'the stone statue's body' — the body and the stone are one thing; we only speak as if they differ. So too: the universe-pot wrapped by the eight coverings, and the 'body' the verse mentions, are identical; the verse just phrases them apart.
यहाँ जो 'उससे भिन्न' रूप में निर्देश किया गया है, वह 'पत्थर की मूर्ति का शरीर' कहने के समान जानना चाहिए। इन आवरणों से लिपटा जो अण्ड-घट है, वही वह शरीर है — भिन्नता केवल कहने में है।
The analogy: 'the statue' is the stone, and 'the body of the statue' names that same stone as if a distinct thing — the difference lies only in the words. Applied here, the aṇḍa-ghaṭa (the wrapped universe-pot) and the 'body' the verse names are one; speaking of them separately is a manner of speaking, not two things.

Second, and lower still: I who am just this four-headed body, seven spans tall — where am I? Grammatically, he adds, the pot-body and the seven-span-body are joined as one karmadhāraya compound.

Jīva seals it with the Viṣṇu Purāṇa: the entire creative power of the cosmos rests in just a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of him. All that we call 'the universe' occupies an all-but-invisible corner of the Lord.
जैसा विष्णु-पुराण में कहा गया है — 'जिसके अयुत-अयुत अंश के अंश में यह समस्त विश्व-शक्ति स्थित है।' अर्थात् भगवान् के एक अत्यन्त अल्पांश में ही सारी विश्व-शक्ति समायी है।
Why cited: Viṣṇu Purāṇa, cited to confirm the pore-sized scale just drawn — the whole viśva-śakti occupies only an infinitesimal fraction of the Lord.
क्यों उद्धृत: विष्णु-पुराण, जो अभी खींचे गये रोमकूप-मात्र माप की पुष्टि के लिए उद्धृत है — समूची विश्व-शक्ति भगवान् के एक अत्यन्त सूक्ष्म अंश में ही समायी है।

tamaḥ prakṛtiḥ; mahān mahat-tattvam; aham ahaṅkāraḥ; kham ākāśam; caraḥ vāyuḥ; jalam [vār]; bhūḥ pṛthvī
tamaḥ prakṛtiḥ — तमस् प्रकृति; mahān mahat-tattvam — महान् महत्तत्त्व; aham ahaṅkāraḥ — अहम् अहंकार; kham ākāśam — खम् आकाश; caraḥ vāyuḥ — चर वायु; jalam — जल; bhūḥ pṛthvī — भूः पृथ्वी
Viśvanātha runs the same word-gloss: tamas is prakṛti, mahat the mahat-tattva, aham the ego, kha ether, cara air, and — supplying the word himself — water, and bhū earth.
तमस् का अर्थ प्रकृति, महान् का महत्तत्त्व, अहम् का अहंकार, खम् का आकाश, चर का वायु, जल, और भूः का पृथ्वी।
Viśvanātha adds jala (water) for the verse's vār, which Jīva left out; both commentators still pass over agni (fire).
विश्वनाथ श्लोक के 'वार्' के लिए 'जल' जोड़ देते हैं, जिसे जीव गोस्वामी ने छोड़ दिया था; फिर भी दोनों ही टीकाकार अग्नि को छोड़ जाते हैं।

Viśvanātha spells out the compound. The egg wrapped in those coverings is the brahmāṇḍa; that egg is the 'pot.' And Brahmā's body — seven spans in measure — has the shape of that very universe-pot. So, being that, 'where am I?' — how small next to you?
इन आवरणों से लिपटा जो अण्ड अर्थात् ब्रह्माण्ड है, वही घट है; जिसका शरीर उस ब्रह्माण्ड-घट के रूप वाला और सात बित्ते के माप का है, वैसा (छोटा) मैं कहाँ।

Where Jīva kept two separate readings, Viśvanātha merges them: the countless universes are themselves the 'atoms.' Their coming and going happens through the pores of your body, pores shaped like little lattice-windows. Where, then, is the greatness of one like you? The gap between Brahmā and Kṛṣṇa cannot be spoken.
इस प्रकार के अगणित ब्रह्माण्ड ही परमाणु हैं; जहाँ उनका बाहर-भीतर आना-जाना ही विचरण है, और जिसके रोमकूप उस गमनागमन के लिए गवाक्ष रूपी द्वार हैं — वैसे आपकी महिमा कहाँ!
Viśvanātha does not split Jīva's atom-reading and universe-reading: for him the paramāṇus simply are the universes, and their traffic passes through the window-like pores of the Lord's body.
विश्वनाथ जीव के परमाणु-पक्ष और ब्रह्माण्ड-पक्ष को अलग नहीं करते: उनके लिए परमाणु सीधे ब्रह्माण्ड ही हैं, और उनका गमनागमन भगवान् के शरीर के गवाक्ष-सदृश रोमकूपों से होता है।
