pitāmahaḥ — the grandfather Brahmā; śiśu-kṛtau — in the affair of the boys; mohitaḥ — was left bewildered.
Brahmā, the grandfather of the world, was thrown into confusion over the business of the boys.
An udāharaṇa of brahma-rudrādi-mohanam, 'the bewildering of Brahmā, Rudra and the rest' — the illustrative verse set up by the lead-in at 2.1.196. The line points to the brahma-vimohana-līlā, where Kṛṣṇa re-manifested the stolen calves and boys.

raṇein battle locative of place; glossed by Viśvanātha below as the Bāṇa-warयुद्ध में
hanta — just look!; raṇe — in battle; śambhuḥ api — even Śambhu; jṛmbhitaḥ — was left stupefied.
And look — even Śambhu, in battle, was left gaping and helpless.
'jṛmbhita' literally 'made to yawn/stretch'; here 'thrown into a daze', of Śiva overpowered by Kṛṣṇa in the Bāṇāsura war.

The relative 'yena' reaches back to L1–L2: he is the one who bewildered Brahmā and stupefied Śiva. 'tat-puraḥ' sets up the taunt completed in L4.

The verse is Nārada's teasing question: since Kṛṣṇa overwhelmed even Brahmā and Śiva, Indra and gods of his rank are nothing before him.

Jīva sets the scene. Some time after the war with Bāṇa, Indra was strutting and boasting about the recovery of the pārijāta tree. This verse is Śrī Nārada's playful, teasing reply to that boasting.

Jīva reads the single word 'adya', today. By saying 'today', Nārada quietly hints that Indra had already been beaten once before — the taunt carries a past humiliation, not just the present one.

Viśvanātha gives the same setting. After the Bāṇa-war, Indra one day boasted over recovering the pārijāta, and this verse is Śrī Nārada's teasing reply. He agrees with Jīva that it is hāsya-vacana, words of jest.
Word-for-word identical to Jīva's opening; both read the verse as Nārada's jest, unlike the hidden reading that took it as scornful.

śiśu-hṛtau vatsa-bālaka-haraṇe |
śiśu-hṛtau'in the stealing of the boys' — Viśvanātha's reading of the locative in the verse locative; note he reads 'śiśu-hṛtau' (stealing) where the mūla line prints 'śiśu-kṛtau'बालकों के हरण के विषय में
vatsa-bālaka-haraṇemeans: in the carrying-off of the calves and the cowherd boysअर्थात् बछड़ों और बालकों के हरण में
śiśu-hṛtau — 'in the stealing of the boys'; vatsa-bālaka-haraṇe — i.e. in the carrying-off of the calves and cowherd boys.
Viśvanātha glosses 'śiśu-hṛtau': it means the carrying-off of the calves and the little cowherds. This points to the episode where the calves and boys were spirited away — the setting in which Brahmā was bewildered.
Viśvanātha's lemma reads 'śiśu-hṛtau' (the theft of the boys), whereas the mūla line here is printed 'śiśu-kṛtau' (the making of the boys) — a textual variant left as it stands, not harmonized.

Viśvanātha pins down 'raṇe', in battle: it means the war with Bāṇāsura — the fight in which even Śiva was left stupefied.
