Now he takes up this bhāva for close analysis. He starts by recalling what came before. Back in the general definition of devotion, bhakti was shown to be of two kinds. One kind is made of activity — things you do. The other kind is made of inner feeling.
bhāva (home: 'a state, a mood, a mental condition'; here: the technical name for the first sprout of divine love, premāṅkura, the state defined by this very verse). ceṣṭā-rūpā = the 'doing' side of devotion; bhāva-rūpā = the 'feeling' side.

tatra ca — and there; pūrvā — the first (the sthāyi); dvividhā — is twofold; kroḍīkṛta-praṇayādi-prema-nāmnī — one named prema, having embraced praṇaya and the higher stages; raty-apara-paryāya-premāṅkura-rūpā bhāva-nāmnī ca — and one named bhāva, the sprout of prema, whose alternate name is rati.

Of those two, the first — the standing mood — divides once more. One is called prema. This is the mature love that has taken praṇaya and all the higher stages into its embrace. The other is called bhāva. This is only the sprout of that love, and it also goes by the name rati.
rati (home: 'attachment, delight, pleasure'; here: a synonym for bhāva, the first sprout of divine love). prema (home: 'love, affection'; here technically: the ripened stage into which praṇaya, māna, sneha etc. have all folded). The whole point of this verse is to define that sprout-stage, bhāva.

samprati tu — but at present; sthāyi-bhāva-sāmānya-rūpam — the general standing-mood; prema-nāmnā praṇayādikam api kroḍīkurvantam — which even embraces what is named prema, praṇaya and so on; raty-apara-paryāya-sthāyi-bhāvāṅkura-rūpam — being the sprout of the standing mood, alias rati; bhāvam — this bhāva; lakṣayati — he defines; śuddha-sattva iti — with 'śuddha-sattva…'.
But right here he defines only one of these. He defines bhāva — the standing mood in its general form. Note what this bhāva is: it is the sprout of the steady mood, the stage also called rati, and yet even in this early form it already holds within its embrace what will later be called prema, with praṇaya and all the higher stages. That is the thing he now defines, with the verse beginning 'śuddha-sattva…'.
The point of 'kroḍīkurvantam' (embracing): the sprout is not a lesser, separate thing from full prema. It already contains prema's higher stages in seed. So defining the sprout also, by implication, covers the whole tree.

mahā-bhāva (home: literally 'the great feeling'; here: the highest, most intense pitch of prema, found in Rādhā). By defining the sprout so that it 'embraces' the higher stages, one definition reaches all the way to the top.

Here he pins down the key term. 'Śuddha-sattva' does not mean the sattva-guṇa of material nature. It means a working of the Lord's own essential power, the svarūpa-śakti — specifically its saṁvit aspect, the 'knowing' function, which shines by its own light. It is emphatically not any special mode of māyā.
śuddha-sattva (ordinary Sāṅkhya sense: 'pure goodness', the highest of the three material guṇas; here explicitly redefined: a mode of the Lord's transcendental svarūpa-śakti, outside māyā altogether). svarūpa-śakti = the Lord's intrinsic energy, whose three functions are hlādinī (bliss), sandhinī (existence), saṁvit (knowledge).

He now explains the extra word in the verse: 'viśeṣa', the special or distinctive kind. Plain śuddha-sattva was the saṁvit function. Being a special śuddha-sattva means it is marked by yet another function of the essential power added in — and to show which one, he now quotes scripture.

The verse says not merely śuddha-sattva but śuddha-sattva-viśeṣa. The word viśeṣa ('special, distinctive') is doing work: it signals that besides saṁvit, a second function — hlādinī, named in the coming quote — is present.

He backs the point with Viṣṇu-purāṇa. Addressing the Lord: in You, the shelter of everything, the three — hlādinī (bliss), sandhinī (existence), and saṁvit (knowing) — are one single power. But the mixed energy, the one that deals out both pleasure and pain, that māyā, is not found in You at all, for You are free of the material guṇas.
Why cited: scriptural proof that hlādinī, sandhinī and saṁvit are the Lord's own one svarūpa-śakti — utterly distinct from the material 'mixed' śakti (māyā).
This is the anchor verse: it names hlādinī alongside saṁvit as the Lord's intrinsic power, which is exactly the 'further function' the viśeṣa points to, and it separates that power from guṇa-based māyā.

So, going by that Viṣṇu-purāṇa verse, understand the point this way. Take the great power called hlādinī. Within it is a core function, and within that core is its very essence. This bhāva we are defining is precisely that essence-portion — the innermost distillate of hlādinī, seated in hlādinī's own central working.

Layered zoom-in: hlādinī → its core function (sāra-vṛtti) → the essence of that core (sārāṁśa). bhāva is the last, innermost layer. The point: bhāva is not hlādinī in general, but hlādinī's most concentrated drop.

Now the little word 'asau' ('this one') in the verse. What does it point back to? It reaches back and pulls in the general definition of devotion given earlier — bhakti as the favorable cultivation of Kṛṣṇa. That earlier, general definition is exactly what 'asau' carries over into this verse. That is its force.
asau ('this / that one') is a pointing word with no content of its own; here it functions to re-import the standing definition of bhakti (ānukūlyena kṛṣṇānuśīlanam) so that bhāva is defined as a species of that already-defined devotion.

One might expect a problem here. The word 'cultivation' (anuśīlana) in the general definition, taken at the level of the bare verb-root, covers activity — doing things. Granted. Even so, in this particular verse it is not the activity-form that is being picked up. Here only the feeling-form is meant. So although 'asau' imports the general definition, it imports just its inner-feeling side, not its doing side.

A worry, and its answer. Since bhāva is defined as heart-movements, won't the passing feelings (the vyabhicāri-bhāvas, described later) also count as bhāva? No — they are excluded here for two reasons. First, on their own they cannot soften the heart; they only get attached to the steady feeling later. Second, the bhāva being defined is specifically marked as the sprout of prema, and a passing feeling is not that sprout. (The source text repeats 'citta-māsṛṇya' by a scribal slip; the sense is the single phrase 'they lack heart-softening power.')

tataḥ ca ayam arthaḥ — so this is the sense; asau yā bhaktiḥ sāmānyataḥ lakṣitā — that devotion which was defined generally; sā eva nija-aṁśa-viśeṣe — that same devotion, in one special part of itself; bhāvaḥ ucyate — is called bhāva.
Now the upshot. The verse means this: the very devotion that was defined earlier in a general way is, in one special portion of itself, what is here called bhāva. Bhāva is not a different thing from bhakti — it is bhakti in a particular, special stretch of its growth.

He now unpacks the verse's first word, 'śuddha-sattva-viśeṣātmā.' Question: this bhāva — what is it made of? Answer, taken from the verse: its very self is a special kind of pure goodness (śuddha-sattva-viśeṣa), and that pure goodness is a form of Kṛṣṇa's own intrinsic power (svarūpa-śakti). Its nature is eternally real, because it is grounded in Kṛṣṇa's eternal dear associates. So bhāva's core is not material at all — it is a mode of Kṛṣṇa's own inner energy, standing firm in his eternal beloveds.
svarūpa-śakti: the Lord's own intrinsic (not external, material) energy; here it is the very stuff of bhāva, marking bhāva as spiritual, not a product of matter (māyā).

Same nature, seen from the devotee's side. This bhāva takes its ground (the seat where it settles) and makes it its own, becoming as if one with it. In that state it is a movement of the heart whose defining mark is favorableness toward Kṛṣṇa (ānukūlya). So bhāva is both Kṛṣṇa's own power (from the last sentence) and, in the devotee, a heart-movement wholly turned toward pleasing him.

Bhāva softens the heart by means of three relishes: the longing to attain Kṛṣṇa, the longing to render favorable service to him oneself, and the longing for warm, close affection with him. These tastes are what melt the heart — that is the force of 'rucibhiḥ citta-māsṛṇya-kṛt' in the verse.

Why the verse says 'prema-.' This bhāva is exactly the sprout of the full prema that Rūpa will define later. He signals this by putting 'prema' into the compound 'prema-sūrya' (the sun of love). Bhāva is the first shoot; prema is the grown plant.

Now the second layer — the analogy (dṛṣṭānta) behind 'prema-sūrya, the sun of love.' The 'sun' here is not the risen midday sun but the sun about to rise, still below the horizon at dawn. The mapping: the not-yet-risen sun = prema, the full love not yet arrived; its first rays (sūryāṁśu) = bhāva, the earliest glow that reaches us before the sun itself. This is why bhāva 'shares the likeness of the rays of the sun of love.' The analogy is only partial (as Viśvanātha notes, na sarvāṁśena): unlike a ray, which stays a ray, bhāva itself later matures into prema — so the image is not pressed all the way.
This is the śleṣa/two-layer point: layer one, bhāva is a portion of Kṛṣṇa's own śakti (the literal reading just given); layer two, bhāva is the pre-dawn ray of the coming sun of prema (this image). The verse holds both at once.

The payoff of the sun-image. Because bhāva is like the first rays of the still-rising sun, the verse's phrase 'sharing the likeness of its rays' means: bhāva is the first faint gleam of prema. Continuing the analogy of s33 — the first light on the horizon before sunrise is bhāva; the full sun that follows is prema. That first gleam is what the verse compares bhāva to.

Now the proof that bhāva is transcendental. Two claims: (1) bhāva is non-material, and (2) it is the very essence of the hlādinī (bliss) power inside that special pure-goodness. Three reasons establish this. First, it eclipses even the joy of liberation — no material happiness could do that. Second, it reveals even Bhagavān himself — it makes the Lord appear. Third, it produces the highest joy. Something that outshines liberation, shows the Lord, and gives supreme bliss cannot be material.
hlādinī: the Lord's bliss-giving power (one of the three — hlādinī, sandhinī, saṁvit); bhāva is here identified as the concentrated core of that bliss-power, hence its supreme joy.

The closing point. The definition was framed for bhāva as it lives in Kṛṣṇa's eternal associates. But a worry lurks: what about ordinary devotees still in this world? And with that, enough of elaborating further.

The verse's little word 'asau' ("that") is doing real work. It reaches back and picks up the bhakti that was already defined in general terms earlier — namely, the favorable cultivation of Kṛṣṇa (ānukūlyena kṛṣṇānuśīlana). So 'that' does not introduce something new; it points to the same devotion already given, now being carried forward into the definition of bhāva.

Now a clarification. It is true that the word 'anuśīlana' ("cultivation") was earlier taken in the broad sense of the verbal root — any devotional activity done for Kṛṣṇa. Grant that. Even so, in this verse defining bhāva, it is not the activity-side (ceṣṭā) that is meant. What is meant here is only the inner-feeling side (bhāva-rūpā). So the same bhakti has two faces — doing and feeling — and this verse picks the feeling face.
ceṣṭā vs bhāva: 'ceṣṭā-rūpā' is bhakti as outward effort/action (chanting, serving); 'bhāva-rūpā' is bhakti as an inner state of the heart. Earlier the general definition took the broad, action-inclusive sense; this verse narrows to the felt state.

Why must it be the feeling-face and not the activity-face? Because in the verse's own words — 'that is called bhāva' — the word 'bhāva' is the predicate, the very thing being asserted, and it is named right out in the open. Since 'bhāva' (inner feeling) is stated directly as what this is, the definition must land on the feeling, not on the activity.

Now, what is this bhāva made of? The verse answers with its first word: 'śuddha-sattva-viśeṣ-ātmā.' Its very core (ātmā) is a special kind of śuddha-sattva — and that śuddha-sattva is a form of Kṛṣṇa's own internal power (svarūpa-śakti), not anything material. And because this state is seated in Kṛṣṇa's eternal dear associates, its essential nature is eternally accomplished — it is never manufactured or freshly begun; it is always already real.
śuddha-sattva: in general Sāṅkhya/Vedānta usage 'sattva' is one of the three material guṇas. Here śuddha-sattva-viśeṣa is explicitly NOT a mode of material nature but a function of Kṛṣṇa's svarūpa-śakti — hence 'viśeṣa' (special), marking it off from ordinary sattva.

And there is a second mark. Through 'rucis' — the eager tastes or relishings for Kṛṣṇa — this state softens the heart (citta-māsṛṇya-kṛt). Viśvanātha simply glosses 'softening' as 'moistening': it makes the heart tender and melting. So bhāva is recognized by what it does — it liquefies a hard heart.
māsṛṇya literally = smoothness/softness (as of oiled or moistened ground); glossed here by ārdratā, 'moistness, tenderness of feeling.' The image is a dry, hard heart becoming soft and pliant.

Now the sun-image. The 'sun' here means a sun that is about to rise very soon — still below the horizon, but its light is already showing. So the verse's phrase 'sharing likeness with the sun's rays' (prema-sūryāṁśu-sāmya-bhāk) means this: bhāva is the first faint glow of prema — the pre-dawn light that appears before the sun of prema itself has risen. Prema is the sun; bhāva is its first rays.

dṛṣṭāntaḥ ayaṁ na sarva-aṁśena — this analogy does not hold in every respect; tathā ca uttara-kāle kiraṇasya saḥ sūrya-rūpatvam — thus, later the ray does not turn into the sun; bhāvasya tu uttara-kāle prema-rūpatve api na kṣatiḥ — but for bhāva, even its later becoming prema does no harm.
Viśvanātha now marks the limit of the comparison. Every analogy (dṛṣṭānta) fits only up to a point, not in every respect. Here is the mapping and where it stops: bhāva is the sun's first ray; prema is the full-risen sun. The comparison holds for the 'first light before the full light' part. But it breaks at one point — a sunbeam never grows up into the sun itself (later on, the ray does not become the sun). Bhāva, by contrast, DOES ripen into prema over time. That difference does not damage the image at all, because the analogy was only ever offered for the 'first glow of a light still to come,' not for whether a ray can become a sun. So the mismatch is expected, and no harm is done.
dṛṣṭānta (illustrative example): the rule is that an analogy is invoked only for the specific point of likeness (here: faint first light preceding full light), and disanalogy elsewhere (a ray cannot become the sun, whereas bhāva does become prema) is no defect — 'na sarvāṁśena,' not in every part.

ata eva — for this very reason; bhāvaḥ saḥ eva sāndra-ātmā budhaiḥ premā nigadyate — that same bhāva, when its nature is dense, is called prema by the wise; iti vakṣyate — as will be stated later.
And this is exactly why the author will later say (at BRS 1.4.1): 'That very bhāva, once its nature has thickened (sāndrātmā), is what the wise call prema.' The quotation confirms the point just made — bhāva and prema are one and the same feeling, differing only in intensity: bhāva is the thin first stage, prema the concentrated ripe stage. That is why, unlike the sunbeam, bhāva really does become prema.
Why cited: cited to confirm that bhāva and prema are one thing at two intensities — the same feeling, only 'thickened' — so bhāva genuinely ripens into prema (justifying s8's claim against the ray-analogy).

He starts on the verse's first word, śuddha-sattva-viśeṣātmā. This 'special pure goodness' is not ordinary material sattva. It is a working of Kṛṣṇa's own inner power. That power is called saṁvit, the knowing-power, and it is what lights everything up. So the pure goodness spoken of here is spiritual, belonging to Kṛṣṇa himself.
śuddha-sattva: in general Indian usage 'sattva' is one of the three material strands (guṇas), the strand of clarity and goodness. Here 'pure sattva' means something else entirely — not a material strand at all, but a mode of Kṛṣṇa's own spiritual energy (the saṁvit function of the svarūpa-śakti).

Now he unpacks the ending -ātmā of that same first word. The 'self' here is nothing but that special pure goodness. Why call it a self? Because this pure goodness rests in Kṛṣṇa's eternally dear ones — the gopīs and the others. Sitting in them, it is a nature that is eternally accomplished, never something newly made. So bhāva has a self that is forever real.
adhiṣṭhāna: literally 'standing-place, seat, substrate.' The point is that this śuddha-sattva does not float free — it is always located in Kṛṣṇa's eternal associates, and that is why it counts as an eternally-real 'self' rather than a passing state.

He turns to the verse's second phrase, prema-sūryāṁśu-sāmya-bhāk. Picture prema, mature love, as a sun. Bhāva resembles the rays of that sun. It is not yet the full sun; it carries a likeness to its first light. This is the analogy the verse is built on: bhāva is to prema as the early rays are to the sun about to rise.
aṁśu / kiraṇa: 'ray, beam.' Rūpa here (in prema-rūpa, sūrya-rūpa) is just 'in the form of' — 'the sun that is prema,' not a separate 'form.'

Now the phrase rucibhiḥ citta-māsṛṇya-kṛt. Bhāva works through certain longings, and he names three: the longing to attain Kṛṣṇa, the longing to render him some favorable service oneself, and the longing for warm mutual affection with him. Through these three longings bhāva does its work. And that work is to soften the heart — to make it melt and grow tender.
māsṛṇya: 'smoothness, softness' (as of oiled or melted substance). Here it names the heart's melting into tenderness, not a physical smoothness — the softening of a hard heart under the touch of these longings.
