The saintly authorities call this kind of devotion sambandhānugā — "following a relationship." What is it? You dwell on a family bond with Kṛṣṇa — thinking of him as father, and so on — and then you transfer that bond onto yourself, taking up that role toward him. The bond is applied to your own self (ātmani).

tad-ātmikety arthaḥ"consisting of that" — that is the meaning of the word ātmikā arthaḥ = the intended senseयही 'तद्-आत्मिका' का अर्थ है
pitṛtvādi-sambandhasya yat mananaṁ — the dwelling on a bond such as fatherhood; viśeṣa-cintanaṁ — i.e. focused contemplation of it; punaḥ tasya āropaṇaṁ — and then the transferring of that bond; svasmin abhimananaṁ — i.e. conceiving it as one's own self; tad-ātmikā iti arthaḥ — such is the sense of "consisting of that."
Jīva unpacks the verse's compound in two steps. First, manana — "dwelling on" the bond of being Kṛṣṇa's father and so on — means focused, particular contemplation of that bond. Then āropaṇa — "transferring" that bond — means abhimanana, identifying yourself with it, taking that role onto your own self. So "consisting of that" (tad-ātmikā) names this two-step movement: contemplate the bond, then make it your own.

Here is the key limit. Modeling yourself on Nanda's mood does not mean thinking you ARE Nanda. You take up his kind of feeling toward Kṛṣṇa — but you do not identify yourself as Vrajendra (Nanda) himself, or as Subala himself. That is what the phrase does not permit.

pitṛtvādy-abhimānaḥ hi dvidhā sambhavati — for the notion "I am his father" etc. can arise in two ways; svatantratvena — one, by taking it independently; tat-pitṛ-ādibhiḥ abheda-bhāvanayā ca — and two, by feeling non-different from his actual father and the rest.
Jīva now distinguishes two ways the thought "I am Kṛṣṇa's father" could come about. First, svatantratvena: taking the role independently, as your own separate self standing in as his father. Second, abheda-bhāvanā: feeling yourself to be one with his actual father Nanda — identifying with Nanda himself. He is about to reject one of these.

Of those two ways, Jīva rejects the second. Feeling yourself non-different from Nanda — merging into Kṛṣṇa's actual father — is improper. (By implication the first form, standing in the role as one's own siddha-self, is the acceptable one.) Now he gives the reason.

pratipādayiṣyamāṇeṣusince they are going to be established [later in the text] to be — loc. pl. future passive participle; agreeing with teṣuजिनका आगे प्रतिपादन किया जाएगा
tad-anaucityāttherefore that (merging) is unfitting abl. of reason; tad + anaucitya = the impropriety of itउस (अभेद-भावना) की अनुचितता के कारण
teṣu — in the case of those associates; bhagavadvat eva nityatvena pratipādayiṣyamāṇeṣu — since they are going to be shown to be eternal, exactly as Bhagavān is; bhagavad-abheda-upāsanā-vat — just like the worship that treats oneself as one with the Lord; tad-anaucityāt — that (kind of merging) is therefore unfitting.
The reason: those Vraja associates — Nanda, Subala and the rest — will be established later in this very work to be eternal, just as Bhagavān is eternal. So merging yourself into them is as wrong as merging yourself into God. Just as you must never worship God by thinking "I am God" (bhagavad-abheda-upāsanā), you must not approach his eternal associates by thinking "I am Nanda." That is why the second way is unfitting.
abheda-upāsanā (home meaning, in Advaitin/tantric worship: meditating on identity with the deity, "I am that"; meaning here: rejected — because Kṛṣṇa's associates are eternally distinct persons, one must not dissolve oneself into them, any more than into Bhagavān).

A second reason. Kṛṣṇa's intimate associates each deserve a particular, fitting attitude of reverence. If you approach them with the wrong attitude — merging into them instead of honoring them as the eternal persons they are — you incur an offense (aparādha) against them. So the merging-way is barred on this ground too.

Viśvanātha gives almost exactly Jīva's two-step gloss — with one telling word-change. Manana of the bond is focused contemplation, as before. But the āropaṇa, the transfer onto oneself, he glosses as abheda-manana — "thinking oneself non-different" from that role. Where Jīva said abhimanana (self-conceiving), Viśvanātha writes abheda-manana. This word choice is what his following remarks will carefully qualify.

Viśvanātha spells out the cost concretely for the friendship mood. If, in sakhya-bhakti, you approach Subala and the other cowherd friends by merging into them, the result you would reach is sāyujya — dissolution, becoming one with him. And sāyujya is precisely the impersonal merger that a devotee does not want. So the merging-approach defeats the whole aim of loving devotion.

Viśvanātha anticipates a counter: "but ahaṅgraha-upāsanā — worship in which you grip the ego and meditate 'I am the deity' — is an accepted method." He grants that such a method exists. Even so, he says, the specific form "I am Vrajendra, I am Nanda" leads to nothing but hell. Understand it that way. Granting the general practice does not license this application of it.
ahaṅgraha-upāsanā (home meaning: a recognized mode of meditation, esp. in tantra, in which the worshiper assumes the identity of the deity — "I am he"; meaning here: even where legitimate elsewhere, applied as "I am Nanda" it is condemned as hellish, because it falsifies one's real relationship to Kṛṣṇa's eternal associate).

tasyāḥ — of that worship; vrajeśvarī-ādau — toward Yaśodā and the rest; viruddha-bhāvanā-prayojakatvāt — because it instigates a contradictory attitude.

Here is why "I am Nanda" is so damaging. If you think you are Nanda, then Yaśodā, the queen of Vraja, becomes your wife — and so on down the line. That worship forces contradictory, improper relationships (viruddha-bhāvanā) toward Kṛṣṇa's other eternal associates. That is exactly why it is hellish: it does not deepen love, it corrupts the whole web of relationships in Vraja.

bhaktiḥ sevā, sādhaka-rūpeṇa siddha-rūpeṇa sādhakaiḥ kāryā |
bhaktiḥ sevā"bhakti" [in the verse] means service the glossed term = sevā'भक्ति' अर्थात् सेवा
sādhaka-rūpeṇa siddha-rūpeṇaby means of the practitioner-form and by means of the perfected form instr.; the two "bodies"साधक-रूप से और सिद्ध-रूप से
sādhakaiḥby the practitioners instr. pl., agentसाधकों के द्वारा
kāryāis to be done gerundiveकरनी चाहिए
bhaktiḥ sevā — bhakti means service; sādhakaiḥ — by practitioners; sādhaka-rūpeṇa siddha-rūpeṇa — by the practitioner-form and the perfected-form; kāryā — is to be performed.
Viśvanātha glosses the verse's "bhakti" as sevā, service, and states who does it and how: practitioners are to perform it in two forms — with the sādhaka-rūpa, the present practicing body, and with the siddha-rūpa, the perfected inner body. He is setting up the crucial division of labor between these two bodies that his next lines enforce.

Viśvanātha grounds his two-body reading in an established authority. There is a settled maxim — "here service is indeed to be done by the practitioner-form and by the perfected-form." He notes that the same explanation applies right here. So his division into sādhaka-rūpa and siddha-rūpa is not his invention; it is the standard teaching applied to this verse.
Why cited: Adduced as the established maxim that authorizes performing rāgānugā service in both bodies — the sādhaka-rūpa and the siddha-rūpa — grounding Viśvanātha's two-body reading of "bhakti" here.

Now the pivotal distinction. When the verse says "do service after the manner of the feeling and conduct of Nanda, Subala, and the rest," which body does the copying? Viśvanātha rules: only the siddha-deha, the perfected inner body, renders that service — and it is mānasī sevā, mental service. It is NOT the case that the practitioner, with his present sādhaka body, physically imitates Subala's feelings and gestures. Modeling on Subala's bhāva and ceṣṭita belongs to the inner, meditative body, not the outer one.

Here is why the sādhaka body must NOT simply copy Subala. Subala, an eternal Vraja associate, never took shelter of a guru's feet, never offered daṇḍavat obeisances, never observed Ekādaśī — he had no need to. But if a practitioner, imitating Subala, also dropped these practices, he would commit offenses against his guru and others, and the consequence would be that he goes to hell. So the outer sādhaka body keeps performing the ordinary disciplines; only the inner siddha body copies Subala's mood. This is the reason behind the previous line's ruling.

Viśvanātha clinches it with the author's own words. Rūpa Gosvāmī himself wrote, earlier in this very work, "a fault arises from [neglecting] the performance of the limbs of bhakti." By that statement, says Viśvanātha, Rūpa has already declared that leaving undone the obligatory limbs — Ekādaśī and the rest — is a fault. So the requirement to keep performing them, even for a rāgānugā practitioner, comes from the author himself.
Why cited: Rūpa Gosvāmī's own dictum (BRS 1.2.63), cited to prove that neglecting the obligatory limbs of bhakti — Ekādaśī and the rest — is a declared fault, hence the sādhaka body must keep performing them even while the siddha body follows Subala's mood.

Viśvanātha concludes on a practical, encouraging note. Since the model to be followed is meant for mental service in the perfected body, where does one find that model? The inner feeling and outward conduct of Nanda, Subala, and the rest is fully and famously available in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. So the practitioner has a ready, authoritative source from which to learn the bhāva and ceṣṭita to meditate on.
