This is the śrutis (the personified Vedas) speaking. The sages, having stilled breath, mind, and senses in firm yoga, worship in the heart that one reality. Even his enemies reached that very reality just by dwelling on him in hatred. And the cowherd women, their minds clinging to his arms — arms stout as the coils of the serpent-king — love him directly. We Vedas say: we too, becoming just like those women and seeing him with the same eyes of love, would gain the nectar of his lotus feet. The verse ranks three paths — yoga, remembrance even in enmity, and the women's spontaneous love — and the Vedas choose the women's way.
uragendra-bhoga: bhoga is the coil or expanded hood of a snake; the compound compares Kṛṣṇa's long, rounded arms to the body of the serpent-king Ananta.
उरगेन्द्र-भोग — 'भोग' सर्प की कुण्डली अथवा फैला हुआ फन है; यह समास कृष्ण की लम्बी, गोल भुजाओं की तुलना सर्पराज अनन्त की देह से करता है।

Jīva sets the scene. With two of his own earlier verses — the half-verse 'brahmaṇi eva' and the verse 'rāga-bandhena' — he now brings in and compares this śruti-statement from the Tenth Canto, the verse beginning 'nibhṛta'. In other words, he is lining up his own summary verses against this scriptural passage to show they say the same thing.
इस प्रसंग में जीव गोस्वामी अपने ही 'ब्रह्मणि एव' नामक अर्ध-श्लोक तथा 'राग-बन्धेन' नामक श्लोक के साथ दशम स्कन्ध में आई इस श्रुति-वाणी की तुलना करते हैं — अर्थात् 'निभृत' से आरम्भ होने वाले इस श्लोक की।

A grammatical note. The little word 'api' ('also/even') occurs twice, once inside each pair of lines. Those two 'api's tell you to read the verse as two distinct pairs — 'even his enemies' in one pair, 'we too' in the other. So the verse falls into two matched halves.
प्रत्येक युग्म के भीतर स्थित 'अपि' शब्द के दो बार आने से दोनों युग्म अलग-अलग समझ में आ जाते हैं।
api here is a connective particle; its repetition is being read as a structural marker that divides the four lines into two matched couplets.
यहाँ 'अपि' एक योजक शब्द है; इसकी पुनरावृत्ति को एक रचनात्मक चिह्न के रूप में पढ़ा जा रहा है, जो चारों पंक्तियों को दो मिलते-जुलते युग्मों में बाँट देता है।

Jīva spells out the first pair. In the heart the sages worship the reality that bears the name 'Brahman.' And even his enemies reached that very reality — not by worship, but simply by keeping him in mind (in their case, in hatred). So the first pair covers two ways to the same goal: the sages' meditation and the enemies' remembrance.
और इसलिए मुनिगण हृदय में जिस ब्रह्म नामक तत्त्व की उपासना करते हैं, उसके शत्रु भी उसी को स्मरण मात्र से प्राप्त हो गए।

Who are 'the women'? Jīva says: the lovely cowherd girls, the gopīs. Why them specifically? Because they alone are famous precisely for this — for loving Kṛṣṇa in this spontaneous, clinging way. The word 'women' is not generic here; it points to the gopīs.
'स्त्रियाँ' से तात्पर्य श्री गोप-सुन्दरियों, अर्थात् गोपियों से है — क्योंकि यह बात उन्हीं के विषय में इस प्रकार प्रसिद्ध है।

tāḥ — those women; aṅghri-saroja-sudhāḥ = tat-prema-maya-mādhuryāṇi — the nectar of the feet, i.e. the love-filled sweetnesses; yayuḥ — attained; vayam api — we too; sama-dṛśaḥ = tābhiḥ sama-bhāvāḥ satyaḥ — with the same vision, being one in feeling with them; samāḥ = tābhiḥ tulyatām prāptāḥ — 'equal', i.e. become their equals; vyūha-antareṇa gopyaḥ bhūtvā — through a further expansion, having become gopīs; te tava aṅghri-saroja-sudhāḥ yayima — we would reach the nectar of your feet; iti arthaḥ — such is the sense.

Now the second pair and the payoff. Those gopīs attained 'the nectar of his lotus feet' — which Jīva glosses as the sweet joys made entirely of love for him. And 'we too' (the śrutis): 'seeing with the same eyes' means we share the gopīs' very feeling; 'equal' means we become their equals. How? By taking a separate expansion-form and actually becoming gopīs ourselves. Then, Jīva has the Vedas address Kṛṣṇa directly — reading 'te' as 'your' — 'we would reach the nectar of your lotus feet.' That is the meaning: the Vedas do not merely admire the gopīs' path; they ask to join it by becoming gopīs.
vyūha-antara: literally 'a distinct arrangement/expansion.' In Vaiṣṇava usage a vyūha is an ordered expansion of the divine; here it is used loosely for the śrutis taking on a further, separate form — a gopī body — to enter Vraja.
व्यूह-अन्तर — शाब्दिक रूप से 'एक भिन्न विन्यास या विस्तार'। वैष्णव प्रयोग में 'व्यूह' भगवान का क्रमबद्ध विस्तार होता है; यहाँ इसे शिथिल अर्थ में लिया गया है — श्रुतियाँ एक और अलग रूप, अर्थात् गोपी-देह धारण करके व्रज में प्रवेश करती हैं।

Jīva gives scriptural backing. In the Bṛhad-vāmana Purāṇa it is well known that the śrutis actually did obtain the gopī-status they had prayed for. This confirms his reading of the verse: the Vedas' wish to 'become gopīs' was not a figure of speech — another Purāṇa reports that they got exactly that.
और वैसे ही बृहद्वामन पुराण में यह प्रसिद्ध है कि श्रुतियों ने प्रार्थना करके गोपी-भाव प्राप्त किया।
Why cited: Cited to confirm that the śrutis really did become gopīs, proving Jīva's reading that 'vayam api… samāḥ' is a literal prayer answered elsewhere.

Jīva heads off a misreading. In Rūpa's summarizing verse the word 'bhajantaḥ' ('those who worship') and the like seem to speak of people in general. But that generic wording is used only as a pointer to the gopīs, not because people-in-general are the real subject. The general term is a signpost that indicates the specific case.
कारिका में 'भजन्तः' इत्यादि पदों से जो सामान्य जनों का निर्देश किया गया है, वह तो इसका (गोपियों का) उपलक्षण होने के रूप में ही किया गया है।
upalakṣaṇa vs. viśeṣaṇa: a viśeṣaṇa states what a thing is (a 'blue lotus' — the blue really belongs to the lotus); an upalakṣaṇa only helps you pick the thing out ('the house with the crow on it' — the crow is not part of the house). Here 'people in general' is upalakṣaṇa: it does not describe the real subject, it merely flags where to look — namely, the gopīs.

Jīva ties the verse to Rūpa's coming categories. The word 'the women' (the gopīs themselves) stamps the type of love he will soon call kāma-rūpā — love that has the very form of the gopīs' passion. And the word 'we' (the śrutis, who follow after) stamps the type called kāma-anugā — love that follows in the gopīs' train. So this one verse already flags both categories Rūpa is about to define.
अतः इस प्रकार 'स्त्रियः' पद के द्वारा आगे कही जाने वाली काम-रूपा भक्ति, और 'वयम्' पद के द्वारा काम-अनुगा भक्ति भी संकेतित की गई है।
kāma-rūpā vs. kāma-anugā: two grades Rūpa defines shortly. kāma-rūpā is the gopīs' own amorous love (its very 'form'); kāma-anugā is the love of those who follow after the gopīs, aspiring to it. 'The women' = the first; 'we' (the śrutis, who come behind) = the second.

Jīva extends the point. By the same reasoning, one should understand that the Vṛṣṇis and others (Kṛṣṇa's kinsmen in Dvārakā, and so on) have their own distinct way of attaining him too. Just as the śrutis reach him by becoming gopīs, each such group has its particular route into his company. The gopī case is the model; the principle carries over.
इसी के अनुसार वृष्णि आदि की भी कृष्ण-प्राप्ति की विशेष रीति जाननी चाहिए।

tatra — there; brahmaṇi eva layam iti padya-ardhena — by the half-verse 'brahmaṇi eva layam'; rāga-bandhena iti padyena ca saha — together with the verse 'rāga-bandhena'; daśama-skandha-śruti-vākyam — the Tenth-Canto śruti-statement; tulayati — he lines up; nibhṛta iti — the 'nibhṛta' verse.
Viśvanātha opens almost exactly as Jīva did. With the half-verse 'brahmaṇi eva layam' and the verse 'rāga-bandhena,' he lines up alongside them this Tenth-Canto śruti-passage, the verse beginning 'nibhṛta.' He too is comparing the summary verses with the scriptural text.

The same grammatical point as Jīva's. The word 'api' occurs twice, once inside each pair of lines, and those two 'api's mark the verse off into two distinct pairs. So the four lines read as two matched halves.
प्रत्येक युग्म के भीतर स्थित 'अपि' शब्द के दो बार आने से दोनों युग्म अलग-अलग समझ में आ जाते हैं।

tataḥ ca — and so; nibhṛtaiḥ = nitarām dhṛtaiḥ = arthāt dhāraṇa-ādinā vaśīkṛtaiḥ — 'nibhṛta', i.e. firmly held, i.e. subdued by breath-control and the like; marut-manaḥ-akṣaiḥ karaṇaiḥ — by the faculties of breath, mind and senses; dṛḍha-yoga-yuktāḥ munayaḥ — the sages joined in firm yoga; yat brahma-ākhyam tattvam — the reality called Brahman; upāsate mātram — merely worship.
Viśvanātha decodes the first line word by word. 'Nibhṛta' means firmly held — that is, brought under control through breath-retention and similar practices. The faculties in question are breath, mind, and the senses. Joined in firm yoga by these, the sages 'merely worship' the reality named Brahman. Note the sharp word 'merely': Viśvanātha stresses that all their yoga gets them only as far as worship — worship, and nothing beyond it. This sets up the contrast in the next segment.
और इसलिए 'निभृत' का अर्थ है अत्यन्त रूप से धारण किए हुए, अर्थात् धारणा आदि से वश में किए गए। ऐसे वायु, मन और इन्द्रिय रूपी करणों से दृढ़ योग में युक्त मुनिगण जिस ब्रह्म नामक तत्त्व की केवल उपासना ही करते हैं।
dhāraṇā: in yoga, the 'holding' or fixing of the breath and mind; used here to explain nibhṛta ('held motionless').
धारणा — योग में प्राण और मन का 'धारण' या स्थिरीकरण; यहाँ इसी से 'निभृत' (निश्चल किए हुए) का अर्थ समझाया गया है।

prāptau tu — but as for attainment; sambhāvanā eva — there is only a possibility; tat-vayaḥ api — even they; smaraṇāt — by remembrance; yayuḥ = prāpuḥ — reached, i.e. attained.
prāptau tu — परन्तु प्राप्ति के विषय में तो; sambhāvanā eva — केवल सम्भावना ही; tat-vayaḥ api — वे भी; smaraṇāt — स्मरण से; yayuḥ prāpuḥ — 'ययुः' अर्थात् प्राप्त हुए।
Now the contrast lands. For the yogīs, 'as for actually reaching him, there is only a bare possibility' — their worship may or may not end in attainment. But others, 'even they,' actually reached him simply by remembering him. Viśvanātha underlines the point by glossing 'yayuḥ' ('went') with 'prāpuḥ' ('attained'): remembrance really arrives, whereas laborious yoga only might. The lower-looking path outperforms the higher-looking one.
परन्तु प्राप्ति के विषय में तो केवल सम्भावना ही रहती है; वे भी स्मरण से ही प्राप्त हुए — 'ययुः' का अर्थ है 'प्राप्त हुए'।

Viśvanātha glosses the women's line. Kṛṣṇa's arms are long and rounded like a serpent's body; the compound 'uragendra-bhoga-bhuja-daṇḍa' says just that. And the women's minds are 'stuck fast' to those arms — glued there, unable to pull away. This clinging attachment is the mark of the gopīs' love.

Viśvanātha closes briefly. 'The rest is the same' — the closing words ('we too, being equal, with the same vision, [gain] the nectar of his lotus feet') are to be taken exactly as already explained, so he does not repeat the gloss. He simply signs off, pointing the reader back to the shared reading.
