bhīti-dveṣau — the two, fear and hatred; ānukūlya-viparyāsāt — because they are the reverse of favorableness; parāhatau — are struck down; snehasya — of affection; sakhya-vācitvāt — because it denotes friendship; vaidha-bhakty-anuvartitā — [its] falling in line with regulated devotion.
ānukūlya-viparyāsāt — अनुकूलता के विपरीत होने के कारण; bhīti-dveṣau — भय और द्वेष दोनों; parāhatau — निरस्त हो जाते हैं; snehasya — स्नेह का; sakhya-vācitvāt — सख्य का वाचक होने से; vaidha-bhakty-anuvartitā — वैधी-भक्ति का अनुसरण।
Fear and hatred are ruled out here. The enemy's mood is the exact opposite of favorable, loving service, so it cannot be a model for rāgānugā. And the Pāṇḍavas' affection? Since the word 'sneha' here means friendship (sakhya), that affection ends up following regulated devotion (vaidhī-bhakti), not spontaneous love.

Or take it a second way. If 'sneha' just means love in general, then it has no use in this practice of rāgānugā either. And the phrase 'we belong to you by devotion (bhakti)' plainly declares regulated devotion (vaidhī-bhakti). So either way, what the passage names is vaidhī, not spontaneous love.
अथवा — स्नेह प्रेम-सामान्य का अभिधायक होने के कारण इस (रागानुगा) साधन में उसका कोई उपयोग नहीं। "भक्त्या वयम्" — इस वचन से स्पष्ट रूप से वैधी भक्ति ही कही गई है।
'sneha' at home means simply affection; in the technical rasa system it is a graded intensity of prema. Here the verse plays on the word: read as sakhya (friendship) or as prema-in-general, either reading keeps the Pāṇḍavas' mood inside vaidhī-bhakti.

So here is the setup. Earlier many different moods were shown to lead one to Kṛṣṇa. But of that whole set, only two — desire (kāma) and hatred (dveṣa) — get selected. Why only those two? To give the reasons, the author speaks the two verses beginning 'ānukūlya'.
इस प्रकार जब बहुत-से अंग होने की आशंका आ पड़ी, तब केवल काम आदि दो को ही ग्रहण करने के कारणों को "आनुकूल्य" इत्यादि दो श्लोकों से कहते हैं।

But notice: when Nārada himself brought up fear and hatred, he did it for one purpose only — to make a 'how much more so' point about devotion (bhakti). That is, if even enemies fixed on Kṛṣṇa in fear and hatred reach him, how much more will his loving devotees.
परन्तु श्रीनारद ने इन भय और द्वेष — इन दोनों का ग्रहण भक्ति के विषय में केवल कैमुत्य सिद्ध करने के लिए ही किया।
'kaimutya' (from 'kim uta', 'how much more') is the a fortiori argument-form: prove the lesser case, and the greater follows all the stronger. Here the lesser case is the hate-filled enemy; the greater is the loving devotee.
"कैमुत्य" ("किम् उत" — "तो फिर और कितना अधिक" से बना) वह न्याय-रीति है जिसमें छोटे पक्ष को सिद्ध कर देने पर बड़ा पक्ष उससे भी अधिक बलपूर्वक सिद्ध हो जाता है। यहाँ छोटा पक्ष है द्वेष से भरा शत्रु, और बड़ा पक्ष है प्रेमी भक्त।

Kings like Śiśupāla, Pauṇḍraka and Śālva hated Kṛṣṇa. Yet their minds were caught by his walk, his playful ways, his glance. Lying down or sitting, they brooded on him against their will — and still they gained a form like his. So then, what to say of those who fix their minds on him in love?
शिशुपाल, पौण्ड्र, शाल्व आदि राजा लोग वैर के द्वारा जिस कृष्ण की चाल, विलास और अवलोकन आदि का ध्यान करते हुए, बुद्धि उसी में तन्मय हो जाने से सोते-बैठते आदि सब अवस्थाओं में उसके सारूप्य को प्राप्त हो गए — तो फिर उसमें अनुरक्त-बुद्धि वाले (प्रेमी भक्तों) की तो बात ही क्या।
Why cited: Scriptural proof of the kaimutya point: if even hate-filled enemies reached Kṛṣṇa's form, loving devotees reach him all the more.
क्यों उद्धृत: यह कैमुत्य का शास्त्रीय प्रमाण है — जब द्वेष से भरे शत्रु तक कृष्ण के रूप को प्राप्त हो गए, तो प्रेमी भक्त तो उससे भी अधिक निश्चय से प्राप्त होंगे।

And this matches what the author already stated elsewhere: that this bhakti was spoken by the divine sage Nārada in the Seventh Canto, but only in an oblique, roundabout way.
और वैसा ही (मैंने पहले) व्याख्यात किया है — "वह भक्ति सप्तम स्कन्ध में देवर्षि (नारद) के द्वारा परोक्ष ढंग से कही गई" — ऐसा।
Why cited: The author's own earlier line (BRS 1.2.3) confirming that Nārada taught this devotion only obliquely, not as a direct rāgānugā model.
क्यों उद्धृत: ग्रन्थकार अपनी ही पूर्व पंक्ति (भ. र. सिं. १.२.३) उद्धृत करते हैं, जो पुष्ट करती है कि नारद ने यह भक्ति केवल परोक्ष रीति से सिखाई, सीधे रागानुगा के आदर्श रूप में नहीं।

The speaker declares: 'A mortal becomes absorbed in Kṛṣṇa through the bond of enmity as he does not become absorbed through the practice of devotion (bhakti-yoga). That is my firm conclusion.' So enmity is being praised as an even faster route to absorption than ordinary bhakti.
जैसे मनुष्य निरन्तर वैर के द्वारा उस (भगवान्) में तन्मयता को प्राप्त होता है, वैसा भक्ति-योग के द्वारा नहीं — ऐसा मेरा निश्चित मत है।
Why cited: Cited to show scripture openly ranks hostile absorption above regulated bhakti-yoga — the puzzle the next line must defuse.
क्यों उद्धृत: इसे इसलिए उद्धृत किया गया कि शास्त्र स्वयं शत्रुतापूर्ण तन्मयता को नियमित भक्ति-योग से ऊँचा बताता है — यही वह उलझन है जिसे अगली पंक्ति को सुलझाना है।

Even that verse praising enmity is not to be read straight. Set beside the emotion-soaked moods like desire, this substitute mood — enmity standing in for love — is actually far weaker as a way to absorb the mind in Kṛṣṇa. The verse's real function is only to hint at that, by suggestion, not to teach enmity as superior.
वह (वचन) भी भाव-मय काम आदि की अपेक्षा विनिमय (वैर-भाव) की चित्त-आवेश उत्पन्न करने की सामर्थ्य में अत्यन्त न्यूनता है — यही व्यंजना से ध्वनित करने के लिए ही (कहा गया)।

The point being suggested is this: among these feeling-filled approaches to Kṛṣṇa, even enmity — blameworthy though it is — turns out better for getting absorbed in him than rule-bound devotion (vidhi-bhakti). So the comparison is only against vidhi-bhakti, and only on the narrow point of raw absorption.
जिन भाव-मय उपायों में वैर का अनुबन्ध निन्दित होने पर भी, उस (भगवान्) में आवेश (तन्मयता) के लिए वह विधि-मय भक्ति-योग से श्रेष्ठ है — ऐसा (तात्पर्य है)।

strī-mayaḥ kāmukaḥ iti-vat — just like the phrase 'a lustful man is woman-filled'.
strī-mayaḥ kāmukaḥ — स्त्री-मय कामुक; itivat — इसके समान।
Compare the everyday phrase 'a lustful man is woman-filled (strī-maya).' It does not mean he turns into a woman; it means his mind is wholly absorbed in her. In the same way 'tan-maya' means the mind is wholly absorbed in Kṛṣṇa.
जैसे "स्त्री-मय कामुक" (स्त्री में तन्मय हुआ कामी पुरुष) कहा जाता है, उसी के समान।
This is an analogy (dṛṣṭānta). The lustful man stands for the absorbed devotee; 'woman-filled' stands for 'Kṛṣṇa-filled (tan-maya)'; the point it proves is that '-maya' means total mental absorption, not literal transformation. It stops there — it says nothing about love versus enmity.

Even granting the friendship, there is a catch. The Pāṇḍavas' love is shot through with awareness of Kṛṣṇa's majesty and godhood (aiśvarya). Because of that, it belongs mainly to the path of rules (vidhi-mārga). So it is of no use as a model for pure rāgānugā, which requires love free of such awe.
फिर भी उनमें ऐश्वर्य-ज्ञान की प्रधानता होने के कारण उन (पाण्डवों) की (भक्ति में) विधि-मार्ग में ही प्रधानता होगी। इसलिए शुद्ध रागानुगा (साधन) में उसका कोई उपयोग नहीं।

Here is the other reading (never dropped, held alongside the first). Suppose 'sneha' means love in general, with no particular flavor named. Then you cannot tell which specific loving acts to imitate — and rāgānugā works precisely by imitating a particular devotee's acts. With nothing definite to feed on, imitation is impossible. So on this reading too the word gives rāgānugā nothing to use. Either way, 'sneha' is of no use here.
और जब "स्नेह" शब्द से प्रेम-सामान्य कहा जाए, तब उसके किसी विशेष (भेद) का कथन न होने से, उन-उन क्रियाओं का निर्धारण न हो पाने के कारण अनुकरण ही असम्भव हो जाता है। इस प्रकार इस रागानुगा नामक साधन में वह आधार (उपजीव्य) न बन सकने के कारण उसका कोई उपयोग नहीं है — ऐसा (समझना चाहिए)।

bhaktyā iti — the word 'bhaktyā'; pāriśeṣya-prāmāṇyena — by the logic of elimination; vaidhatve eva paryavasānāt — because it settles precisely in regulated devotion.
bhaktyā iti — "भक्त्या" से; pāriśeṣya-prāmāṇyena — पारिशेष्य के प्रमाण से; vaidhatve eva paryavasānāt — वैधत्व में ही पर्यवसान से।
Now the verse's word 'bhaktyā' — 'by devotion.' By the logic of what is left over (once spontaneous love is ruled out), this devotion can only be regulated devotion (vaidhī). Elimination forces the reading: 'bhakti' here means vaidhī-bhakti.
"भक्त्या" — इस पद से पारिशेष्य के प्रमाण से (यह भक्ति) वैधत्व में ही पर्यवसित होती है।
'pāriśeṣya' is the reasoning 'by remainder': when every other candidate is excluded, the one left standing must be the answer. Here spontaneous love has been excluded, so 'bhakti' must mean the vaidhī that remains.
"पारिशेष्य" वह युक्ति है जो "शेष रह जाने" से चलती है — जब और सभी सम्भावनाएँ निकाल दी जाएँ, तब जो एक बच रहता है वही उत्तर होना चाहिए। यहाँ स्वतःस्फूर्त (रागात्मिका) प्रेम निकाल दिया गया, इसलिए "भक्ति" का अर्थ वही वैधी होना चाहिए जो शेष रह गई।

The reason even those moods are highlighted is this: emotion-soaked desire and hatred cause an intense absorption of the mind, and next to that, regulated devotion (vaidhī-bhakti) causes only a lesser absorption. The verse means to hint at that contrast by suggestion — that is its only point.

"पारिशेष्य" वह अनुमान है जो "शेष रह जाने" से चलता है — जब और सभी सम्भावनाएँ निकाल दी जाएँ, तब जो एक बच रहता है वही उत्तर है। स्वतःस्फूर्त (रागात्मिका) प्रेम निकाल देने पर "भक्ति" वही वैधी होनी चाहिए जो शेष रह गई।

iti bhāvaḥthis is the [author's] intentऐसा भाव है
ataḥ — therefore; na tasyāḥ api atra upayogaḥ — of it too no use here; iti bhāvaḥ — this is the sense.
ataḥ — इसलिए; na tasyāḥ api atra upayogaḥ — उसका भी यहाँ कोई उपयोग नहीं; iti bhāvaḥ — ऐसा भाव।
Therefore that vaidhī-bhakti too has no use here in rāgānugā. That is the author's intended sense.
इसलिए उस (रागात्मिका) का भी यहाँ कोई उपयोग नहीं — ऐसा भाव है।

iti jñeyamthis should be understoodऐसा जानना चाहिए
nāradasya aiśvarya-jñāna-prādhānyāt — because majesty-awareness was dominant in Nārada; pūrva-janmani — in his former birth; vaidhī-bhaktiḥ eva mahadbhiḥ upadiṣṭā — vaidhī alone was taught by the great souls; iti jñeyam — this is to be understood.
nāradasya aiśvarya-jñāna-prādhānyāt — नारद के ऐश्वर्य-ज्ञान की प्रधानता से; pūrva-janmani — पूर्व जन्म में; vaidhī-bhaktiḥ eva mahadbhiḥ upadiṣṭā — वैधी भक्ति ही महापुरुषों द्वारा उपदिष्ट; iti jñeyam — ऐसा जानना।
And understand this about Nārada: because his devotion was dominated by awareness of Kṛṣṇa's majesty (aiśvarya), what the great souls (mahat) taught him in his former birth was regulated devotion (vaidhī-bhakti) alone — not spontaneous love. This ties the whole point back to Nārada's own case.
नारद के (चरित्र में) ऐश्वर्य-ज्ञान की प्रधानता होने के कारण पूर्व जन्म में महापुरुषों के द्वारा वैधी भक्ति ही उपदिष्ट (सिखाई गई) थी — ऐसा जानना चाहिए।
