L1definition
śāstroktayā prabalayā tat-tan-maryādayānvitā |
śāstroktayāspoken by scripture — the boundary is one that scripture itself lays down instrumental, qualifying maryādāशास्त्र में कही गई (जो मर्यादा शास्त्र में बताई गई है)
prabalayāand it is strong — this sense of proper limits is powerful, predominant in the devotee instrumental, qualifying maryādāप्रबल (जो सुदृढ़ और बलवती हो, ऐसी मर्यादा से)
tat-tat-maryādayāby the various proper bounds — the many rules of reverence appropriate to each situation instrumental of accompanimentउन-उन विषयों की उचित मर्यादा के साथ
anvitāaccompanied by — this devotion comes bound up with those bounds past participle, feminine, agreeing with bhaktiḥ in L2(जिससे वह भक्ति) युक्त है
iyaṁ vaidhī bhaktiḥ — this regulated devotion; śāstroktayā prabalayā tat-tat-maryādayā anvitā — is accompanied by the strong sense of proper bounds, taught by scripture, appropriate to each case
This kind of devotion comes joined with a sense of proper limits. Those limits are laid down by scripture. They are strong in the devotee. And they take a different form fitting each situation. The word maryādā here means the reverential bounds — the awareness of the Lord's greatness that keeps the devotee acting within respectful decorum.
maryādā: in general Sanskrit a boundary line, a shore, the proper limit of conduct (as in maryādā-puruṣottama, one who never oversteps propriety). Here it names the felt sense of reverence and rule — the devotee's awareness of the Lord's majesty that holds worship within scripturally fixed bounds, as opposed to the boundary-melting intimacy of rāga.
L2definition
vaidhī bhaktir iyaṁ kaiścan maryādā-mārga ucyate ||
vaidhī bhaktiḥdevotion driven by rule — worship set going by scriptural injunction (vidhi) nominative, the subjectवैधी भक्ति (विधि अर्थात् शास्त्र की आज्ञा से होने वाली भक्ति)
iyamthis — the devotion just described in L1 nominative feminine pronounयह (जिसका ऊपर वर्णन हुआ)
kaiścitby some — certain teachers, not all instrumental of agentकुछ (विद्वानों) के द्वारा
maryādā-mārgaḥthe path of proper bounds — the road of reverential regulation nominative, the name givenमर्यादा-मार्ग (यह नाम)
ucyateis called — is given this name passive presentकही जाती है
iyaṁ vaidhī bhaktiḥ — this devotion driven by rule; kaiścit — by some teachers; maryādā-mārgaḥ ucyate — is called 'the path of proper bounds'
This is devotion driven by scriptural rule — vaidhī bhakti. Some teachers give it a name: they call it maryādā-mārga, the path of proper bounds. The 'some' (kaiścit) matters — this is one name used by certain authorities, not a universal label.
vaidhī: from vidhi, a scriptural injunction. Vaidhī bhakti is devotion undertaken because scripture commands it, in contrast to rāgānugā bhakti (defined in the next verse), which follows spontaneous attachment (rāga) rather than command.

Jīva and Mukunda left this verse without comment. The editors simply note the gap: here these two commentators say nothing.
This is an editorial note recording an absence, not a teaching. It flags that the commentary tradition on this verse rests on Viśvanātha alone (below).

s1gloss
śāstroktā maryādā yadi prabalā bhavati, prathamato bhakti-pravṛttau prayojikā bhavati |
śāstroktā maryādāthe sense of proper bounds that scripture teaches — the reverential limit laid down in scripture nominative, subject of this clauseशास्त्र में कही गई मर्यादा
yadi prabalā bhavatiif it becomes strong — when this sense of bounds grows predominant in the person conditional clause, yadi 'if'यदि प्रबल हो जाए
prathamataḥat the very start — right at the beginning of one's practice adverb of timeसबसे पहले, आरम्भ में
bhakti-pravṛttauin setting devotion going — in getting one first engaged in devotional practice locative, the sphere where it operatesभक्ति में प्रवृत्ति के विषय में (जहाँ यह कार्य करती है)
prayojikā bhavatiit becomes the prompter — it is what first pushes the person into devotion nominative predicate, feminine agent-nounप्रेरक बन जाती है (उसे प्रवृत्त करने वाली होती है)
śāstroktā maryādā — the scriptural sense of proper bounds; yadi prabalā bhavati — if it becomes strong; prathamataḥ bhakti-pravṛttau — then at the outset, in engaging in devotion; prayojikā bhavati — it becomes the prompting cause
Viśvanātha explains the mechanism. Scripture lays down a sense of proper bounds — reverence, rule, decorum. Suppose that sense grows strong in a person. Then, right at the start, it is what first prompts them to take up devotion. In other words: for this type of devotee, it is the pull of 'scripture says I should' — the awareness of the Lord's greatness and the rules owed to it — that gets them moving, not spontaneous attachment.
prayojikā: the prompting or impelling cause, what sets an action in motion. Viśvanātha is pinpointing the driver of vaidhī bhakti — the boundary-sense itself is the engine, which is exactly what distinguishes this path from rāgānugā, where spontaneous longing (rāga) is the engine.
s2conclusion
tadā tayā maryādayānvitā iyaṁ vaidhī bhaktiḥ kaiścij janair maryādā-mārga iti saṁjñayocyate ||
tadāthen — in that case, once the boundary-sense is the prompter correlative adverb answering yadiतब (यदि का उत्तर)
tayā maryādayāby that sense of bounds — the very reverential limit just described instrumental of accompanimentउस मर्यादा के साथ
anvitāaccompanied by it — devotion that comes bound up with it past participle agreeing with bhaktiḥयुक्त (जिससे वह भक्ति युक्त है)
iyaṁ vaidhī bhaktiḥthis devotion driven by rule — the vaidhī bhakti at issue nominative, subjectयह वैधी भक्ति
kaiścit janaiḥby some people — certain teachers, not everyone instrumental of agentकुछ लोगों के द्वारा
maryādā-mārgaḥ iti saṁjñayāunder the name 'the path of proper bounds' — by that technical designation instrumental, saṁjñā 'name, technical term'मर्यादा-मार्ग इस संज्ञा से (इस पारिभाषिक नाम से)
ucyateis called — is so named passive presentकही जाती है
tadā — then; tayā maryādayā anvitā — accompanied by that sense of bounds; iyaṁ vaidhī bhaktiḥ — this rule-driven devotion; kaiścit janaiḥ — by some people; maryādā-mārgaḥ iti saṁjñayā ucyate — is called by the name 'the path of proper bounds'
Then here is the upshot. This rule-driven devotion, now carrying that sense of bounds along with it, gets a name. Some people call it, as a technical term, maryādā-mārga — the path of proper bounds. Viśvanātha is just unpacking the verse: he spells out kaiścit as 'some people,' and maryādā-mārga as the settled name (saṁjñā) they use for vaidhī bhakti once the boundary-sense is what drives it.
saṁjñā: a name used as a fixed technical term, not a loose description. Viśvanātha's gloss confirms the mūla's point — this is a specific label adopted by certain authorities for the reverence-governed form of devotion, set against the rāga-mārga (path of attachment) taken up in the following verse.
