prāpañcikatayā buddhyā hari-sambandhi-vastunaḥ |
mumukṣubhiḥ parityāgo vairāgyaṁ phalgu kathyate ||
The verse — decoded
L1definition
prāpañcikatayā buddhyā hari-sambandhi-vastunaḥ |
prāpañcikatayāon the grounds that it is worldly — treating it as merely material instrumental of cause/reasonयह केवल सांसारिक ही है — इस कारण से
buddhyāwith such a mindset — because they think this way instrumental of meansऐसी बुद्धि के द्वारा
hari-sambandhi-vastunaḥof a thing that is connected to Hari genitive, object of the giving-upहरि से सम्बन्ध रखनेवाली वस्तु का (त्याग)
hari-sambandhi-vastunaḥ — of a thing connected to Hari; prāpañcikatayā buddhyā — with a mind that takes it to be merely worldly
Take some object that is connected to Hari. Now suppose a person looks at it and, in his mind, treats it as just a material thing. That wrong way of seeing is the setup for this whole definition.
prāpañcika: from prapañca, the manifested world; 'worldly, material.' Home sense: belonging to the created cosmos. Here: the mistaken judgment that a Hari-related object is only that, nothing more.
L2definition
mumukṣubhiḥ parityāgo vairāgyaṁ phalgu kathyate ||
mumukṣubhiḥby those who want liberation — because they are set on getting free instrumental, the agents doing itमुक्ति चाहनेवालों के द्वारा
parityāgaḥthe giving-up, the rejection of it nominative, the act being namedजो त्याग किया जाता है, वह त्याग
vairāgyaṁas renunciation, as detachment nominative, predicateवैराग्य
phalgupoor, worthless — renunciation with no real substance predicate adjectiveफल्गु (सारहीन, तुच्छ)
kathyateis called, is said to be passive verbकहा जाता है
mumukṣubhiḥ — by those wanting liberation; parityāgaḥ — the rejection [of that Hari-connected thing]; phalgu vairāgyaṁ — as worthless renunciation; kathyate — is called
Now the people doing this are those who want liberation. When they reject that Hari-connected object, this rejection is called phalgu-vairāgya — renunciation that looks like detachment but has no real worth.
phalgu: named for the Phalgu river, dry on the surface with water only hidden below. So 'phalgu' = something that seems to be there but is barren, insubstantial. Here it labels a renunciation that is empty of real value.

Now, what exactly is this 'worthless' renunciation? Take whatever renunciation does not serve bhakti — is of no use to devotion. That, and only that, is what should be understood as phalgu-vairāgya.
bhakti: loving devotional service. Here the test is functional — renunciation counts as 'phalgu' precisely when it fails to help one's bhakti.

And for people who have turned away from the Lord, this renunciation can go all the way to becoming an offense. With that point in view, Rūpa Gosvāmī speaks the verse that begins 'prāpañcikatayā.'
bahirmukha: literally 'face turned outward,' i.e. away from God; 'averse, indifferent to the Lord.' aparādha: a spiritual offense. The warning: for the God-averse, rejecting Hari-related things is not neutral — it can rise to the level of offense.

tat-prasādādimeans his mercy-remnants and the like — prasāda and such the gloss supplied; ādi 'and the like'उनका प्रसाद आदि
atra — here; hari-sambandhi vastu — 'a thing connected to Hari'; tat-prasādādi — means his prasāda and other such things
What does 'a thing connected to Hari' mean here? It means the Lord's prasāda — the sanctified remnants of what has been offered to him — and other things of that kind.
prasāda: literally 'grace, favor'; here specifically the food and items offered to the Lord and returned as sanctified. So the 'Hari-connected thing' is not abstract — it is concrete: his prasāda and the like.

Now, rejecting that Hari-connected thing comes in two forms. He is about to name both.

The two forms are these. First, aprārthanā — simply never asking for the Hari-connected thing. Second, prāpta-anaṅgīkāra — refusing to accept it even when it has already come to you.
aṅgīkāra: acceptance, taking on. prāpta: 'obtained, come to hand.' So the second kind is actively turning away something already in your grasp — a stronger act than merely not seeking it.

Of these two, the second is worse. Refusing a Hari-connected thing that has already come to you should be understood as an offense all the more — plainly and especially an offense.
sutarām: 'to a greater degree, especially.' Both kinds are faulty, but the second — pushing away what Hari has already sent — rises much more clearly to the level of aparādha.

Viśvanātha here repeats Jīva's definition almost verbatim; the test is again functional — renunciation is 'phalgu' exactly when it fails to help one's devotion.
