pratijñā tava govinda na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati |
pratijñāthere is a vow, a promise nom. sg., subjectयह आपकी प्रतिज्ञा है
tavayours — it is your promise gen. sg.आपकी
govindaO Govinda (Kṛṣṇa) voc.हे गोविन्द
nanot — neverनहीं
memy, belonging to me gen. sg.मेरा
bhaktaḥdevotee — my devotee nom. sg.भक्त
praṇaśyatiperishes, is ever lost pres. 3 sg.नष्ट होता है
govinda — O Govinda; tava — yours; pratijñā [asti] — is the vow; [namely] me bhaktaḥ — my devotee; na praṇaśyati — never perishes.
govinda — हे गोविन्द; pratijñā tava — यह आपकी प्रतिज्ञा है (कि); me bhaktaḥ — मेरा भक्त; na praṇaśyati — कभी नष्ट नहीं होता।
O Govinda, this is your own vow: 'My devotee never perishes.' Draupadī quotes Kṛṣṇa's promise back to him. The whole force of the verse rests on that one word tava — 'yours' — the promise is his, so it cannot fail.
हे गोविन्द, यह आपकी प्रतिज्ञा है कि मेरा भक्त कभी नष्ट नहीं होता।
Why cited: Draupadī's trust in Kṛṣṇa's promise — offered as the example of viśvāsa, the first kind of sakhya named in the previous verse.
क्यों उद्धृत: द्रौपदी का कृष्ण की प्रतिज्ञा पर विश्वास — पूर्व पद्य में कहे गए सख्य के प्रथम भेद 'विश्वास' के उदाहरण के रूप में उद्धृत।
bhakta here: not a beginner but 'one who is his' — the devotee Kṛṣṇa has bound himself to protect.
यहाँ 'भक्त' का अर्थ कोई नवसाधक नहीं, अपितु 'जो उनका अपना है' — वह भक्त जिसकी रक्षा का भार कृष्ण ने स्वयं अपने ऊपर ले रखा है।

iti saṁsmṛtya saṁsmṛtya prāṇān saṁdhārayāmy aham ||
itithis — recalling those very words quotative, closing the promiseऐसा (स्मरण करके)
saṁsmṛtya saṁsmṛtyaremembering and remembering — again and again gerund doubled = repeated actionबार-बार स्मरण करके
prāṇānthe life-breaths, my very life acc. pl., objectअपने प्राणों को
saṁdhārayāmiI hold together, I keep myself alive pres. causative 1 sg.टिकाए रखती हूँ
ahamI — I myselfमैं
iti saṁsmṛtya saṁsmṛtya — remembering this again and again; aham — I; prāṇān saṁdhārayāmi — hold my life-breath together.
iti saṁsmṛtya saṁsmṛtya — इसी को बार-बार स्मरण करके; aham — मैं; prāṇān — अपने प्राणों को; saṁdhārayāmi — धारण किए रहती हूँ।
Remembering that promise over and over, I keep myself alive. It is not her own strength that sustains her — it is the memory of his word. The repeated saṁsmṛtya shows the trust is continuous, moment to moment; this steady reliance is the viśvāsa the verse is cited to illustrate.
इसी को बार-बार स्मरण करके मैं अपने प्राणों को धारण किए रहती हूँ।
prāṇān saṁdhārayāmi: literally 'I hold the vital airs together'; here simply 'I stay alive' — she survives on his promise alone.
'प्राणान् संधारयामि' का शाब्दिक अर्थ है 'प्राणवायुओं को एक साथ थामे रखती हूँ'; यहाँ सीधा-सा अर्थ 'मैं जीवित रहती हूँ' — वह केवल उनकी प्रतिज्ञा के सहारे प्राण धारण करती है।

pratijñā iti — the verse 'pratijñā…'; śrī-draupadī-vākyam — is Draupadī's utterance.
pratijñā iti — 'प्रतिज्ञा' से आरम्भ होने वाला यह पद्य; śrī-draupadī-vākyam — श्री द्रौपदी का वचन है।
The verse starting 'pratijñā' is spoken by Draupadī. Jīva first fixes the speaker: these are her words to Kṛṣṇa.
'प्रतिज्ञा' से आरम्भ होने वाला यह पद्य श्री द्रौपदी का वचन है।

tasmāt — hence; yadyapi — although; asyāḥ vākyam idam — this utterance of hers; prema-viśeṣa-maya-parikara-antargatatvena — because she is among the associates made of a special love; darśayiṣyamāṇāyāḥ — [she] who will be shown so later; prema-viśeṣa-kāryam eva — is only the effect of that special love; na tu sādhanam — not a means; tathāpi — yet; parama-prema-atiśayānām — for those seeking the summit of love; sādhanam api syāt — it may also be a means; iti evam udāhṛtam — so it is cited.
Here Jīva raises and answers an objection. Objection: this book is in the section on sādhana, on practice — but Draupadī is one of Kṛṣṇa's most intimate companions, whose very being is made of a special love (as will be shown later). So her words are the effect of love already attained, not a practice that produces love. Reply: even so, for people striving to reach the very heights of love, her words can also work as a practice — a model of trust to take up. That is why the verse is quoted here.
इसलिए इस द्रौपदी का — जिसका वर्णन आगे किया जाएगा — यह वाक्य, यद्यपि प्रेम-विशेष से युक्त परिकर के अन्तर्गत होने के कारण प्रेम-विशेष का कार्य ही है, साधन नहीं; तथापि परम प्रेम की पराकाष्ठा तक पहुँचे भक्तों के लिए यह साधन भी हो सकता है — इसी अभिप्राय से इसका उदाहरण दिया गया है।
The objection turns on effect vs. means (kārya vs. sādhana). In an established devotee, confident trust is the fruit of love; in an aspirant, deliberately cultivating that same trust is a practice. Same act, two roles — which is why it fits the sādhana section.

Apply the same reasoning further on. Later a verse is quoted that comes from a passage describing the very topmost devotee. There too you should understand it the same way: it describes love already perfected, yet it is cited as a practice for those aspiring to it.
इसी प्रकार आगे भी, भागवतोत्तम के वर्णन वाले प्रकरण से उद्धृत पद्य के विषय में यही समझना चाहिए।
bhāgavatottama: the highest grade of devotee. A verse praising such a one seems to describe attainment, not practice — Jīva says read it as he just read Draupadī's verse.

Jīva points to the wording that closes that Bhāgavatam passage: the topmost devotee is 'one who holds the Lord's lotus feet fast with the rope of love.' The very phrase, and the fact that it stands as the passage's summing-up, prove the section is a description of the topmost devotee — so the verse drawn from it is to be read just as Draupadī's was.
'प्रणय की रस्सी से जिसने चरण-कमल बाँध रखे हैं' — इस पद्य के अपने उपसंहार से ही यह बात सिद्ध होती है।
Why cited: Bhā.Pu. 11.2.55 — its closing phrase is cited to prove that the later-quoted verse belongs to a 'description of the topmost devotee,' so Jīva's effect-yet-also-means reading carries over to it.
क्यों उद्धृत: भा.पु. 11.2.55 — इसका उपसंहार-वाक्य यह सिद्ध करने के लिए उद्धृत कि आगे उद्धृत पद्य 'भागवतोत्तम के वर्णन' का अंग है, अतः जीव की 'कार्य होते हुए भी साधन' वाली व्याख्या उस पर भी लागू होती है।
praṇaya-rasanā, 'the rope of love': love pictured as a cord that ties down even the Lord's feet — the mark of the perfected devotee, not of a beginner's practice.
'प्रणय-रसना' अर्थात् 'प्रेम की रस्सी' — प्रेम को ऐसी डोरी के रूप में चित्रित किया गया है जो भगवान के चरणों तक को बाँध लेती है; यह सिद्ध भक्त का लक्षण है, नवसाधक की साधना का नहीं।
