mukha bāhūru-pādebhyaḥ puruṣasyāśramaiḥ saha |
mukha-bāhūru-pādebhyaḥfrom the mouth, the arms, the thighs, and the feet ablative of origin — the four bodily regions the varṇas come out ofमुख, भुजा, जंघा और चरण से — इन चार अंगों से (जिनसे चारों वर्ण निकले)
puruṣasyaof the Puruṣa, the cosmic Person genitive — whose limbs these areपुरुष के (जिनके ये अंग हैं)
āśramaiḥ sahatogether with the āśramas (the four stations of life) instrumental with saha — accompanied byआश्रमों के साथ
puruṣasya — of the cosmic Person; mukha-bāhūru-pādebhyaḥ — from his mouth, arms, thighs and feet; āśramaiḥ saha — along with the four āśramas
mukha-bāhūru-pādebhyaḥ — पुरुष के मुख, भुजा, जंघा और चरण से; puruṣasya — उस पुरुष के; āśramaiḥ saha — आश्रमों सहित
From the cosmic Person's mouth, arms, thighs, and feet — and along with the four āśramas (the stations of life) — . The line sets up: the four social orders come out of four parts of God's own body. The verb finishing the sentence comes in line 2.
पुरुष के मुख, भुजा, जंघा और चरण से — आश्रमों के साथ (चारों वर्ण उत्पन्न हुए)। यह श्लोक की पहली पंक्ति है; क्रिया अगली पंक्ति में आती है।
Why cited: adduced to show the varṇas and āśramas all spring from the Lord's own body — so he is worthy of worship
क्यों उद्धृत: यह वचन इसलिए उद्धृत है कि चारों वर्ण और आश्रम सब भगवान् के अपने ही शरीर से निकले हैं — अतः वे भजन के योग्य हैं।
puruṣa: in ordinary use simply 'a man, a person'; here the Puruṣa, the cosmic Person of the Puruṣa-sūkta whose body the universe is.
'पुरुष' शब्द सामान्यतया केवल 'मनुष्य' के अर्थ में आता है; परन्तु यहाँ यह पुरुष-सूक्त का वह विराट् पुरुष है जिसके शरीर से यह सारा जगत् बना है।

catvāraḥ varṇāḥ — the four social orders; vipra-ādayaḥ — the brāhmaṇas and so on; guṇaiḥ — by their differing qualities; pṛthak — each as a distinct order; jajñire — were born
catvāraḥ — चार; varṇāḥ — वर्ण, अर्थात् vipra-ādayaḥ — विप्र आदि; guṇaiḥ — गुणों के कारण; pṛthak — पृथक्-पृथक्; jajñire — उत्पन्न हुए
The four varṇas — brāhmaṇas, kṣatriyas, vaiśyas, śūdras — were born. They came out separately, each a distinct order. What distinguishes them is the guṇas, the qualities they carry. So the whole social order comes from the Lord's body, marked off by quality.
विप्र आदि चारों वर्ण गुणों के कारण पृथक्-पृथक् उत्पन्न हुए। भेद उन्हीं गुणों से है।
Why cited: scriptural proof that all four varṇas arise from the Puruṣa, differentiated by guṇa
क्यों उद्धृत: यह शास्त्र-प्रमाण है कि चारों वर्ण पुरुष से ही उत्पन्न हुए और गुण के भेद से अलग-अलग हुए।
guṇa: literally 'strand, quality'; here the three constituents of material nature (sattva, rajas, tamas) whose mix defines each varṇa.
'गुण' का शब्दार्थ 'रस्सी, धर्म' है; परन्तु यहाँ यह प्रकृति के तीन घटक (सत्त्व, रज, तम) हैं, जिनका मिश्रण प्रत्येक वर्ण को निश्चित करता है।

yaḥ — जो; eṣām — इनमें से; sākṣāt — साक्षात्; ātma-prabhavam — स्वयंभू; īśvaram — ईश्वर रूप; puruṣam — उस पुरुष को
Now the sentence names the object: the Puruṣa. He is directly the Lord himself. He is self-born — he comes from no one but himself. And of all these orders and stations, he is the one they came from. Whoever, among these people, faces this Lord — the verse holds; line 4 completes it.

क्यों उद्धृत: यह भगवान् को साक्षात् ईश्वर और स्वयंभू के रूप में स्थापित करता है — जिसके प्रति आगे भजन (या उसका न होना) निर्दिष्ट है।

Such people do not worship him. Worse, they slight him. So they are dislodged from their place — their standing in varṇa and āśrama. And they fall down, to a low, degraded state. The lesson: since everyone came from the Lord, refusing and scorning him costs you your very place.
जो नहीं भजते और अवज्ञा करते हैं, वे अपने स्थान से भ्रष्ट होकर नीचे गिर जाते हैं।
Why cited: the verse's punch line — those who spring from the Lord yet refuse and scorn him fall from their station; cited here to prove that failing to worship the Lord brings ruin

Viśvanātha sets up the verse. The point to be made is this: not worshipping the Lord — the one who deserves worship — brings nothing but ruin. But before stating that, Vyāsa first gives a reason why the Lord is worthy of worship. That is why the verse opens 'mukha…' — it starts by grounding the Lord's worship-worthiness.
उसी प्रकार यहाँ भजने योग्य भगवान् को न भजने से दुर्गति ही होती है — यह कहने के लिए, पहले वे यह युक्ति देते हैं कि भगवान् भजने योग्य क्यों हैं, और 'मुख' इत्यादि श्लोक कहते हैं।
bhajanīya / bhajanīyatva: 'to be worshipped' / 'worthiness-of-being-worshipped'; the -tva makes it the abstract quality — the very fact that he ought to be worshipped.
'भजनीय' अर्थात् 'भजने योग्य', और 'भजनीयत्व' उसका भाववाचक रूप है — यह गुण कि वे भजने योग्य ही हैं; '-त्व' प्रत्यय इसी अमूर्त भाव को प्रकट करता है।

Here Viśvanātha glosses the verse's words. 'By the guṇas' means by sattva, rajas, and tamas. He adds that these guṇas act as the instruments — the means by which the orders are marked off. Together with the āśramas, the four varṇas — brāhmaṇas and the rest — were born.
सत्त्व आदि गुणों को करण (साधन) बनाकर, आश्रमों के साथ, विप्र आदि चार वर्ण उत्पन्न हुए।
karaṇa: grammatically the instrumental 'means' (the 'by-which'); Viśvanātha spells out that the guṇas are the instrumental cause differentiating the varṇas, reading the verse's bare 'guṇaiḥ' as instrumental-of-means.
'करण' व्याकरण में तृतीया का 'साधन' (जिसके द्वारा) है; विश्वनाथ स्पष्ट करते हैं कि गुण ही वह करण हैं जिनसे वर्णों में भेद होता है — श्लोक के मात्र 'गुणैः' को वे तृतीया-साधन के रूप में पढ़ते हैं।

Viśvanātha now unpacks 'ātma-prabhavam.' It means: the Lord from whom these people's very origin directly springs. Among these orders, those brāhmaṇas and the rest who do not worship this Lord — for that very reason they slight him. His key move: the non-worship itself is the insult. By simply failing to worship the one they came from, they are already showing contempt.
इन विप्र आदि में से जो, जिससे साक्षात् इनकी अपनी उत्पत्ति होती है, ऐसे ईश्वर को नहीं भजते — इसीलिए अवज्ञा करते हैं। न भजना ही उनका अवज्ञा करना है।
ātma-prabhava: literally 'having origin (prabhava) from oneself (ātman)'; Viśvanātha reads it here as the source from whom the varṇas themselves arise — 'the one their existence comes from.'
'आत्म-प्रभव' का शब्दार्थ 'जिसका प्रादुर्भाव अपने आप (आत्मा) से हो' है; विश्वनाथ यहाँ इसे उस स्रोत के रूप में पढ़ते हैं जिससे स्वयं वर्ण उत्पन्न होते हैं — 'जिससे इनका अस्तित्व आता है।'

Viśvanātha proves his point with an everyday example. Take someone who richly deserves your respect. If you simply fail to honour him, that failure is already an insult — you needn't do anything actively rude. The mapping: the respectable person stands for the Lord; withholding respect stands for withholding worship; and the disrespect stands for the avajñā, the insult. So too with the Lord, who most deserves worship: merely not worshipping him is itself contempt. The analogy proves that omission counts as an offense; it goes no further than that — it is not about active abuse, just the failure itself. This, he says, is the meaning of the verse's 'avajānanti.'
जैसे परम आदरणीय पुरुष का आदर न करना ही उसका अनादर है, वैसे ही परम भजनीय भगवान् का न भजना ही उनकी अवज्ञा है — यही अर्थ है।

sthānāt varṇa-āśramāt bhraṣṭāḥ santaḥ — वर्णाश्रम रूप स्थान से भ्रष्ट होकर; adhaḥ patanti — नीचे गिरते हैं
Finally Viśvanātha glosses the last line. 'From their place' means from their varṇa and āśrama — their whole social and spiritual standing. Once they are dislodged from it, they fall downward into a degraded state. So the cost of scorning the Lord is losing the very position you were born into.
अपने स्थान, अर्थात् वर्णाश्रम से भ्रष्ट होकर वे नीचे गिर जाते हैं।
sthāna: ordinarily just 'place, position'; here glossed concretely as one's station in the varṇāśrama order — the standing one forfeits by refusing the Lord.
'स्थान' का सामान्य अर्थ केवल 'जगह, पद' है; परन्तु यहाँ इसे मूर्त रूप में वर्णाश्रम-व्यवस्था में अपने पद के रूप में समझाया गया है — वही स्थान जिसे भगवान् को न भजने से मनुष्य खो देता है।
