The primary sort of union (sambhoga) is the one felt while awake — not the meetings that happen only in dream or fancy. And this waking union comes in four kinds.
sambhoga is the meeting-half of śṛṅgāra-rasa, paired against vipralambha (separation). 'mukhya' marks the waking union as the chief of the varieties treated in the preceding verses.

Those four unions each grow out of a different prior state of separation. In order: out of pūrva-rāga, out of māna, and out of the two kinds of pravāsa. Since the sources are four (pūrva-rāga, māna, and pravāsa counted twice), so are the unions.

prema-vaicittya-anantaraḥthe union that comes right after prema-vaicittya — the pang of separation felt even while the beloved is presentप्रेम-वैचित्त्य के अनन्तर होनेवाला

Jīva reads 'fourfold' as merely indicative, not exhaustive. So he says a fifth union should also be recognized — the one that follows prema-vaicittya. The count of four does not shut the door on it.
upalakṣaṇa vs viśeṣaṇa: a viśeṣaṇa states part of what a thing IS ('the blue lotus' — blue belongs to it), while an upalakṣaṇa only points you to it without exhausting it ('the house with the crow on it' — the crow just helps you find it, and other houses may qualify too). Calling 'fourfold' an upalakṣaṇa is what lets Jīva add a fifth: the number four locates the type, it does not fence it off.

samṛddhimantaṁ kecid āhuḥsome say [that fifth] is samṛddhimatकुछ (विद्वान्) उसे समृद्धिमान् कहते हैं
prema-vaicittyānantarasya sambhogasya nāma-anukteḥ — since the union after prema-vaicittya is left unnamed; tam api samṛddhimantaṁ kecid āhuḥ — some call that one too samṛddhimat; anurāga-māhātmyād eva — because of the greatness of anurāga; sudūra-pravāsāntimatva-mananāt — because it is felt to come last after the farthest separation; tasmād eva dvayoḥ pāratantryyāropāt ca — and because on that ground the two are treated as interdependent.
The verse names four but leaves the fifth — the union after prema-vaicittya — unnamed. So some hold that this fifth is also samṛddhimat, for three reasons: prema-vaicittya belongs to the height of anurāga; like samṛddhimat it is felt to come last, after the farthest separation; and on that footing the two are treated as bound together under one name. This is one of two unresolved opinions — the counter-view follows.
prema-vaicittya: an advanced state in which the lover feels the ache of separation even while the beloved is right there — a mark of anurāga at its peak. That intensity is the first ground for pairing it with samṛddhimat.
