When Mukunda — the very Kāmadeva, the maddener, of the gopīs' hearts — left Nanda's house… The word madana works two ways at once: he is the love-god who fills their hearts, and the one who drives them mad with longing.

An udāharaṇa of cintā, 'anxiety,' the vyabhicāri-bhāva under discussion here; the verse is quoted from Rūpa Gosvāmī's own Haṁsadūta (2). It paints Rādhā's anxiety at Kṛṣṇa's leaving for Mathurā as a river she drowns in.

Now Viśvanātha spells out the rūpaka: her anxiety itself is the river, and in it she sinks. Then he pours out her churning thoughts. 'Shall I bind up my life-breaths — scorched though they are by the flames of anguish — with the ropes of hope, and keep them alive? Or shall I cut those ropes and let them go? And if I do let go — shall I throw myself into fire, or into the Yamunā? But then, when he comes back to Vraja and cannot find me, what will he do? He will die of grief for me.' Each thought turns straight into the next — this back-and-forth is the whirlpool.

Here Viśvanātha opens the śleṣa. 'Ghana' is 'dense.' And 'ghūrṇā' reads two ways at once: literally the whirlpools (āvarta) of the river, and — in the second reading (pakṣe) — the udghūrṇā, the reeling swirls of her heart that rise from mohana, one of the divisions of mahā-bhāva, the highest reach of love. So the river's dense whirlpools are, at the same moment, the dense reelings of her love-maddened heart. One word carries both.
mohana is a bheda (variety) of mahā-bhāva, the topmost intensity of prema; a swooning 'reeling' (ghūrṇā / udghūrṇā) of consciousness is one of its marks — which is why the river's literal whirlpools double as this inner reeling.
