ekā — एक गोपी; bhrū-kuṭim ābaddhya — भौंह कसकर चढ़ाकर; prema-saṁrambha-vihvalā — प्रेम के आवेग से विह्वल
One gopī, beside herself with a rush of love, drew her brows into a tight frown.
एक गोपी भौंह को कसकर चढ़ाकर, प्रेम के आवेग से विह्वल हुई।
An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) of kauṭilya-lalita — the 'crooked-charming' variety of loving jest (a narma-viśeṣa) taken up under 14.104 — quoted from the rāsa-līlā of the Bhāgavatam (10.32.6), as the lead-in states (śrī-daśame). The 'crookedness' is her feigned, teasing anger: knit brows, a bitten lip, slanted glances — love wearing the mask of a scolding. Viśvanātha names the gopī as Śrī Rādhā; the mūla itself leaves her anonymous (ekā), so the decode keeps her generic here.

tena — by that word narma; vācika-kauṭilyaṁ prathamaṁ — crookedness of speech is meant first of all; kauṭilyaṁ mānasaṁ kāyikaṁ ca jñeyam — but crookedness of mind and of body too is to be understood.
vācika-kauṭilyaṁ — वाणी की कुटिलता; tena — उस पद से; prathamaṁ — सबसे पहले; kauṭilyaṁ mānasaṁ kāyikaṁ ca jñeyam — मानसिक तथा कायिक कुटिलता भी समझनी चाहिए
narma is 'crooked speech' first of all — teasing, devious words. But take the word to cover crookedness of mind and body as well, says Viśvanātha. Here the crookedness shows in her sulking mood and her gestures — the frown, the bitten lip, the slanted glance — not in anything she says.
पहले तो यह वाणी की कुटिलता को कहता है; उसी पद से मानसिक और कायिक कुटिलता भी जाननी चाहिए।

rāsa-antardhāna-ante — at the close of Kṛṣṇa's vanishing in the rāsa; śrī-kṛṣṇam ālokayantyāḥ mānavatyāḥ śrī-rādhāyāḥ ceṣṭitaṁ — the gesture of the sulking Śrī Rādhā as she gazes at Kṛṣṇa; śrī-śuka-devo varṇayati — Śukadeva describes; bhrūkuṭim ābadhya — 'knitting her brow,' where ā samyak pragāḍhatayā — the ā- means tightly, with full force; na tu śaithilyena baddhvā — not bound loosely.
Viśvanātha sets the scene. During the rāsa dance Kṛṣṇa had vanished; now, at the end of that disappearance, Rādhā — sulking (māna) — gazes at him, and this is the gesture Śukadeva describes. So Viśvanātha identifies the anonymous gopī as Śrī Rādhā. Now catch the prefix, he says: in ā-badhya, 'knit,' the ā- means 'fully' — she draws her brows tight and hard, not slack. A frown pulled taut, like a bow bent to its full.
रास में कृष्ण के अन्तर्धान हो जाने के अन्त में, श्रीकृष्ण को निहारती हुई मानिनी श्रीराधा की चेष्टा का श्रीशुकदेव वर्णन करते हैं — 'भौंह चढ़ाकर'; यहाँ 'आ' उपसर्ग भलीभाँति, गाढ़ता का बोधक है, न कि ढीलेपन से बाँधने का।
māna — the jealous, offended sulk a heroine turns on her beloved; the emotional 'crookedness' at the heart of kauṭilya-lalita. Viśvanātha's naming of Rādhā is his own identification; the mūla leaves her unnamed.
मान — वह ईर्ष्या-भरा, रूठा हुआ रोष जो नायिका अपने प्रियतम पर करती है; यही कौटिल्य-ललित के मूल में की भावनात्मक 'कुटिलता' है। राधा का नाम लेना विश्वनाथ की अपनी पहचान है; मूल श्लोक उसे अनाम रखता है।

prema-saṁrambha-vihvalā iti — by 'beside herself with love's saṁrambha'; citta-dravaḥ mānaś ca vyañjitaḥ — both the heart's melting and her jealous māna are suggested.
prema-saṁrambha-vihvalā iti — 'प्रेम-संरम्भ-विह्वला' इस पद से; citta-dravaḥ — चित्त का द्रवीभूत होना; mānaḥ ca — और मान भी; vyañjitaḥ — व्यंजित हो रहे हैं
The single phrase 'love's saṁrambha' carries two things at once, Viśvanātha notes. saṁrambha is a flaring-up: so it points to her heart melting with love (citta-drava) and, in the very same breath, to her māna, her jealous indignation. Tenderness and anger folded together — that is what makes the jest 'crooked.'
'प्रेम-संरम्भ-विह्वला' इस पद से चित्त का द्रवीभूत होना और मान — दोनों एक साथ व्यंजित हो रहे हैं।
citta-drava — literally 'the melting of the heart,' the softening tenderness of love; set here against māna, the offended sulk. The word saṁrambha lets one phrase hold both — the crux of the verse's charm.
चित्त-द्रव — शब्दशः 'हृदय का पिघलना', प्रेम की कोमल आर्द्रता; यहाँ इसे मान — रूठे हुए रोष — के सामने रखा गया है। 'संरम्भ' शब्द एक ही पद को दोनों भावों का धारक बना देता है — यही इस श्लोक के माधुर्य का मर्म है।

kaṭākṣasya śaratvam āropitamso arrow-nature is laid upon the sidelong glance āropa — the poetic superimposition of one thing's nature onto anotherकटाक्ष पर बाणत्व का आरोप किया गया है
kaṭākṣepaiḥ — kaṭākṣa-nikṣepaiḥ iti — the word means 'castings of sidelong glances'; kaṭākṣasya śaratvam āropitam — and upon that glance the nature of an arrow is superimposed.
kaṭākṣepaiḥ — 'कटाक्षेपैः' पद; kaṭākṣa-nikṣepaiḥ iti — अर्थात् कटाक्षों के निक्षेप (फेंके जाने) से; kaṭākṣasya śaratvam āropitam — कटाक्ष पर बाणत्व का आरोप किया गया है
Viśvanātha reads kaṭākṣepaiḥ as kaṭākṣa-nikṣepaiḥ — 'hurlings of sidelong glances' — and names the figure: the glance is made an arrow (śaratvam āropitam, arrow-nature superimposed on it). Now the picture is complete — brows the bent bow (s4), glances the arrows she looses. Jīva, by contrast, had flattened the same word to plain 'sidelong glances' (kaṭākṣaiḥ) and left the arrow unbuilt. Both readings stand.
'कटाक्षेपैः' का अर्थ है कटाक्षों के फेंके जाने से; इस प्रकार कटाक्ष पर बाणत्व का आरोप किया गया है।
āropa — the poetic superimposition of one thing's nature onto another (here, arrow-hood onto the glance); the mechanism of rūpaka (metaphor). It is what turns 'she glanced' into 'she loosed her arrows.'
आरोप — एक वस्तु के स्वरूप को दूसरी पर अध्यारोपित कर देना (यहाँ कटाक्ष पर बाणत्व का); यही रूपक की प्रक्रिया है। इसी से 'उसने देखा' बदलकर 'उसने बाण छोड़े' बन जाता है।
