Viśvanātha glosses the definition. Abhiyoga is vyakti — making bhāva show. It runs on two channels. 'By oneself' means the lover shows it himself. 'By another' means the go-between women — such as Amitārthā — show it for him.

Here is the mechanism. When the hero shows his own love, that becomes the cause that makes the heroine's love spring up.

Look at the word viluṭhad, 'wallowing'. It hints at more than a touch. Not just that his eye-corner brushed my lip. Rather, that eye-corner got drunk on the nectar of my lip — so drunk that once it fell there it stayed, unable to lift itself away.
sīdhu is a sweet liquor; mad-adhara-sīdhu, 'the wine of my lip', makes the eye-corner an intoxicated drinker that cannot leave the cup.

So his eye-corner got its wish through the touch. But his eyes and tongue never got to taste the lip itself. Denied that, he bites a red sprout that looks like my lip. Rādhā sees this and says, 'my heart is bursting.' That line displays her love springing up.
