rasam ālāti ādātte iti rasālām |
rasam ālāti'it draws in the rasa' the etymology being unpacked: rasa + ā-√lāरस को खींच लेती है (रस + आ-√ला की व्युत्पत्ति)
ādātte= it takes up, seizes [glossing ālāti]ग्रहण कर लेती है
iti rasālāmhence the name 'rasālā'इसलिए 'रसाला' (उस वाणी को)
rasam ālāti — it draws in the rasa; ādātte — that is, takes it up; iti rasālām — therefore [called] rasālā.
rasam ālāti — रस को खींच लेती है; ādātte — ग्रहण कर लेती है; iti rasālām — इसीलिए वह 'रसाला' (रस-ग्राहिणी वाणी)।
Jīva derives rasālā by etymology: 'rasam ālāti' — 'it draws in the rasa.' The verb ālāti he explains as ādātte, 'takes up.' So rasālā means 'that which draws in and holds the rasa' — an epithet of the speech itself.
जो रस को खींच लेती — ग्रहण कर लेती — है, वह 'रसाला' है। जीव इस प्रकार 'रसाला' को वाणी का विशेषण मानते हैं।
Jīva reads rasālā as a descriptive epithet of the speech (the metaphor: the voice is 'rasa-drawing'). Viśvanātha below takes rasālā instead as the name of a drink and calls the figure a simile — the two readings are not merged.
जीव 'रसाला' को वाणी का वर्णनात्मक विशेषण मानते हैं (वाणी 'रस खींचने वाली')। नीचे विश्वनाथ 'रसाला' को एक पेय का नाम मानकर अलंकार को उपमा कहते हैं — दोनों पाठ मिलाए नहीं जाते।

rasālā — रसाला; pānaka-bhedaḥ — एक प्रकार का पेय।
Viśvanātha takes rasālā in its literal sense: a pānaka, a particular sweet drink.
विश्वनाथ के मत में 'रसाला' एक प्रकार का (मीठा) पेय है।
pānaka: a sweet blended beverage. (Contrast Jīva, who read rasālā as the epithet 'rasa-drawing' — the two readings are not combined.)

tām eva iti — 'उसी के समान' यह (उपमा-शब्द भरकर); upamā eva iyaṁ — यह उपमा ही है; na tu rūpakam — परन्तु रूपक नहीं।
Read it as 'Mādhava's speech, sweet like that very rasālā-drink.' So the figure here is a simile (upamā) — a plain comparison — not a rūpaka, which would fuse the speech and the drink into one thing.
विश्वनाथ 'उसी के समान' — यह उपमावाचक शब्द जोड़ते हैं। इससे यहाँ उपमा ही बनती है, रूपक नहीं।
upamā keeps the two things two ('a face like the moon'); rūpaka fuses them into one ('the moon-face'). Viśvanātha allows only the 'like' here: speech resembling the drink, not speech identified as the drink.
उपमा में दोनों वस्तुएँ दो ही रहती हैं ('चन्द्रमा-सा मुख'); रूपक उन्हें एक कर देता है ('मुख-चन्द्र')। विश्वनाथ यहाँ केवल 'समान' मानते हैं — वाणी पेय के सदृश, पेय ही नहीं।

karṇāpahāri-varṇām iti viśeṣaṇam — the qualifier 'ear-stealing syllables'; mādhava-vāci eva anukūlam — suits only Mādhava's speech; na tu rasālāyām — not the drink; asambhavāt — because impossible there; iti rūpakasya bādhakam — hence it blocks the metaphor.
karṇāpahāri-varṇām iti viśeṣaṇaṁ — 'कर्णापहारि-वर्णाम्' यह विशेषण; mādhava-vāci eva anukūlaṁ — माधव की वाणी में ही अनुकूल (ठीक) बैठता है; na tu rasālāyām — रसाला (पेय) में नहीं; asambhavāt — क्योंकि वह वहाँ असम्भव है; iti rūpakasya bādhakam — इसलिए यह रूपक का बाधक है।
The qualifier 'having ear-stealing syllables' can only describe speech. A drink has no syllables at all, so the epithet cannot land on the rasālā. That impossibility blocks the metaphor: you cannot flatly identify the speech with the drink when a key describing-word fits only one of the two. So the figure must be a simile, not a metaphor.
'कर्णापहारि-वर्णाम्' (कान हरने वाले अक्षरों वाली) — यह विशेषण केवल माधव की वाणी में ही ठीक बैठता है, रसाला-पेय में नहीं; क्योंकि पेय में अक्षर सम्भव ही नहीं। अतः यह विशेषण रूपक को रोक देता है।
bādhaka: a 'blocker' — a word whose sense is impossible under the metaphor's identity, forcing the figure back down to a simile.
बाधक = 'रोकने वाला' — वह शब्द जिसका अर्थ रूपक की तादात्म्य-कल्पना में असम्भव हो, जिससे अलंकार उपमा तक उतर आता है।

Mammaṭa lays down the very same rule in the Kāvya-prakāśa: 'May Ambikā's lotus-foot — lovely, charmed with the jingle of anklets — bring us victory.' A real lotus wears no anklets, so 'anklet-jingling' cannot fit the lotus. That impossibility blocks the metaphor 'foot = lotus' and leaves a simile. The same logic settles our verse.
जैसा काव्यप्रकाश में कहा गया है — 'अम्बिका के, पायल की मधुर झंकार से मनोहर, चरण-कमल हमें विजय के लिए हों।' यहाँ 'पायल की झंकार' (असली) कमल में प्रतिकूल है, क्योंकि कमल पायल नहीं पहन सकता; इसलिए यह रूपक का बाधक बन जाता है।
Why cited: Adduced from Mammaṭa's Kāvya-prakāśa as a textbook parallel: a qualifier ('anklet-jingling') impossible in the literal upamāna (a real lotus) blocks the rūpaka (foot = lotus) and forces a simile — exactly the case of 'ear-stealing syllables' vs. the rasālā-drink.
क्यों उद्धृत: मम्मट के काव्यप्रकाश से एक पाठ्य-उदाहरण के रूप में उद्धृत: जो विशेषण मुख्य उपमान (असली कमल) में असम्भव हो, वह रूपक (चरण = कमल) को रोककर उपमा बना देता है — ठीक वैसे ही जैसे 'कान हरने वाले अक्षर' रसाला-पेय के विरुद्ध हैं।
