evam ete rasāḥ tu aṣṭau lakṣaṇa-lakṣitāḥ jñeyāḥ — thus these are to be known as the eight rasas, each marked by its definition; ataḥ ūrdhvam bhāvānām api lakṣaṇam pravakṣyāmi — from here on I shall state the definition of the bhāvas too
Bharata closes the rasa section. Thus these are the rasas to be known, the eight of them, each fixed by its own lakṣaṇa, its defining mark. From here onward I shall set forth the definition of the bhāvas as well. That little word 'too' (api) is the hinge Abhinava now turns on.
This reading of the verse counts eight rasas — the base text Abhinava accepts (see s1) — with śānta left out of the tally debated in the previous unit.

(tu aṣṭau iti)'but eight' — the reading followed here the parenthesized (stvaṣṭāviti) resolves to tu aṣṭau iti; the received text reads 'eight', not 'nine'(कोष्ठक का पाठ) 'तु अष्टौ' — अर्थात् 'आठ'; स्वीकृत पाठ आठ पढ़ता है, नौ नहीं
evam ete rasāḥ jñeyāḥ nava iti — [some read] 'to be known as nine'; tu aṣṭau iti — [but the text here reads] 'but eight'
Abhinava first settles the wording. Some recite the line as 'these rasas are to be known as nine.' The reading he follows says 'but eight.' So the count in this verse is fixed at eight, keeping the śānta question of the last unit at arm's length.
The transmitted text is corrupt here; (stvaṣṭāviti) is read as tu aṣṭau iti, the variant Abhinava adopts against nava, 'nine'.

rasavat-gītam iti-ādi-vyapadeśātbecause of expressions such as 'a song that has rasa' (rasavat-gītam) ablative of ground; -vyapadeśa = the naming, the way rasa gets predicated of a song, a poem, and the like'रसवत् गीत' इत्यादि व्यपदेश (नामकरण, इस प्रकार का प्रयोग) के कारण
stūyaterasa is extolled, spoken of with praiseस्तुति की जाती है, सराही जाती है
rasa-mūlāḥ eva upacārāḥ iti darśayatihe shows that such usages are figures of speech (upacāra) that merely have rasa for their root upacāra = a figurative, transferred application; eva — they are only that, rooted in rasa, not literal possessors of it'ये उपचार (आरोपित, गौण प्रयोग) रसमूलक ही हैं' — यह दिखलाते हैं; 'ही' अर्थात् केवल रस में जड़, रस के साक्षात् धारक नहीं
lakṣaṇa-lakṣitāḥ itiand he shows this by the very word 'marked by their lakṣaṇa' śleṣa: lakṣaṇa = 'definition', but it also sounds lakṣaṇā = 'figurative/secondary denotation'; the rasas as named in 'the song has rasa' are reached only through such transferred usage'लक्षणलक्षित' — यहाँ श्लेष: लक्षण = 'परिभाषा', परन्तु लक्षणा = 'गौण/लाक्षणिक अर्थवृत्ति' भी; 'गीत में रस है' ऐसे नाम इसी आरोपित प्रयोग से ही मिलते हैं
rasavat-gītam iti-ādi-vyapadeśāt stūyate — from usages like 'a song possessed of rasa', rasa is spoken of in praise; rasa-mūlāḥ eva upacārāḥ iti lakṣaṇa-lakṣitāḥ iti darśayati — by the word 'lakṣaṇa-lakṣitāḥ' he shows these to be figures rooted in rasa
Now the double sense of 'lakṣaṇa-lakṣitāḥ.' When we say 'a song that has rasa' (rasavat-gītam), rasa is being praised — but a song does not literally hold rasa; rasa lives in the connoisseur. Such expressions are upacāras, figures of speech that only have rasa at their root. Abhinava says Bharata's own word signals this: lakṣaṇa means 'definition,' but it also rings with lakṣaṇā, 'figurative usage.' The rasas as named in everyday talk are reached through that transferred sense.
The passage is textually damaged (sa ... śāstu ye te rasa? in the transmitted line); only the rasavat-gītam gloss and the śleṣa on lakṣaṇa/lakṣaṇā are securely recoverable. rasavat is the old poetics term (Daṇḍin, later Mammaṭa) for a composition 'possessed of rasa'.

Here is the point of that 'too.' When Bharata promises to define the bhāvas as well, he is not opening a separate subject. Defining the bhāvas only finishes off the definition of rasa, filling in what it still left open.

He spells it out. Rasa was defined as arising from the union of vibhāvas, anubhāvas, and vyabhicārins. So the moment you define those three, you are completing rasa's own definition and nothing else.

The reference is to Bharata's rasa-sūtra, 'vibhāva-anubhāva-vyabhicāri-saṁyogāt rasa-niṣpattiḥ' — rasa is constituted precisely by these three, so to define them is to finish defining rasa.

Take śṛṅgāra as the test case. sāhacaryātmerely because it keeps company with the word 'bhāva' ablative of ground; reading sāhacaryāt for the corrupt mahācāryā — the mere neighbouring of the term is what creates the surface impression(भाव शब्द के) सान्निध्य के कारण; भ्रष्ट 'महाचार्या' के स्थान पर 'साहचर्यात्' पढ़ने पर — मात्र पड़ोस से ही यह ऊपरी प्रतीति बनती है

tena yadi api āpātataḥ sāhacaryāt idam bhāvānām lakṣaṇam pratibhāti, tathā api vākya-eka-vākyatayā idam rasa-lakṣaṇam eva iti api-śabdasya arthaḥ, iti śivam — so although this looks, at first sight and by mere association, like a definition of the bhāvas, still, by syntactic unity, it is the definition of rasa itself; that is the point of the word 'api'; and so, blessing
Abhinava draws it together. At first glance, and only because it sits next to the word 'bhāva,' this looks like a definition of the bhāvas in their own right. But read as one continuous sentence, it is really the definition of rasa itself. That is exactly what Bharata's little 'too' (api) was pointing to all along. And on that note: blessing — śivam. The word both closes the argument and names Śiva, whom the closing verse now invokes.
The manuscript's mahācāryā is emended to sāhacaryāt, 'from mere companionship [of the word bhāva]', which the sense requires. eka-vākyatā — the principle that a stretch of text construes as one integral sentence, so its parts cannot be read in isolation.

Abhinava seals the chapter with a benedictory verse, and its first half is pure śleṣa. There is One whose play runs through the midst of the eight śaktis, the powers, that begin with rati — that is, the eight sthāyibhāvas are read as His eight energies. And He is the One to be joined within the maṇḍala of one's own heart. The rasa-scheme has quietly become a map of Śiva.
This and s9 form a single closing śloka. The transmitted text is damaged; samprayojyaḥ is read for samprayojyā(jyaḥ). maṇḍala / sva-hṛt — the 'circle of the heart' is a Śaiva-tantric image, natural to Abhinava the Māheśvara devotee; the eight sthāyins are recast as the eight śaktis of the deity.

The second half completes the verse and the śleṣa. The sthāyin — the emotion that abides — is Śiva himself, the ever-abiding auspicious One seated in the heart. And it is by Him that this vṛtti has been composed, here on the rasa-chapter, step by orderly step. Two words carry the double sense: sthāyī is both 'the abiding sthāyibhāva' and 'the abiding Śiva,' and vṛtti is both 'this commentary' and 'the heart's own functioning.' Abhinava signs off by handing the whole work back to Śiva.

The closing colophon. So ends the sixth chapter, the Rasādhyāya, in the Abhinavabhāratī — Abhinavagupta's commentary on the Nāṭyaveda — composed by the illustrious great devotee of Maheśvara. With this the whole rasa-chapter is complete.
The authorial colophon closing chapter six; mahā-māheśvara, 'great devotee of Śiva', is Abhinavagupta's standard self-title and chimes with the śivaḥ of the benedictory verse just above.
