vīre ajighāṁsā itithe mark of vīra, by contrast, is the absence of any wish to kill (ajighāṁsā)परन्तु वीर में मारने की इच्छा (जिघांसा) का अभाव है
krama-prāptaṁ vīraṁ lakṣayati — he defines the vīra, next in order; atha vīra iti — in the words 'atha vīra…'; saṁgrāma-samprahāra-yogaḥ raudre api iti — since fighting belongs to raudra too; vīre ajighāṁsā iti — in vīra there is no wish to slay.
krama-prāptaṁ vīraṁ lakṣayati — क्रम से प्राप्त वीर का लक्षण करते हैं; atha vīra iti — 'अथ वीर' इस पद को लेकर; saṁgrāma-samprahāra-yogaḥ raudre api iti — संग्राम और प्रहार का योग रौद्र में भी है; vīre ajighāṁsā iti — परन्तु वीर में मारने की इच्छा का अभाव है।
Now Bharata defines the vīra, which comes next after raudra, in the passage 'atha vīra…'. Abhinava heads off a confusion: fighting on the battlefield belongs to the furious raudra as well. So what marks off the heroic vīra is this — in vīra there is no desire to kill (ajighāṁsā). The hero fights, but not to slaughter.
क्रम से प्राप्त वीर रस का 'अथ वीर' इस पद को लेकर लक्षण करते हैं। युद्ध और प्रहार का योग रौद्र में भी होता है, परन्तु वीर में मारने की इच्छा (जिघांसा) नहीं होती।
The differentia is the whole point of placing vīra right after raudra: both share the field of combat, but the murderous intent that defines raudra is exactly what the hero lacks.
वीर को रौद्र के तुरन्त बाद रखने का यही मर्म है — दोनों का क्षेत्र युद्ध है, परन्तु जो जिघांसा (मारने की इच्छा) रौद्र को परिभाषित करती है वही वीर में नहीं होती।

ānantaryam atha-śabdena āha — by 'atha' he marks the sequence; uttamānāṁ prakṛtiḥ svabhāvaḥ — uttama-prakṛti = the nature of noble men; yataḥ utsāhaḥ — since drive comes from it; ataḥ vīra-rasaḥ api tathā — so the vīra-rasa too is such.
ānantaryam atha-śabdena āha — 'अथ' शब्द से अनन्तरता कहते हैं; uttamānāṁ prakṛtiḥ svabhāvaḥ — उत्तम पुरुषों की प्रकृति अर्थात् स्वभाव; yataḥ utsāhaḥ — जिससे उत्साह होता है; ataḥ vīra-rasaḥ api tathā — इसलिए वीर रस भी वैसा ही है।
The word 'atha' signals that vīra comes right after raudra. Now for 'uttama-prakṛti': it means the very nature of noble men. Because drive (utsāha) rises out of that noble nature, the vīra-rasa too takes on that noble character.
'अथ' शब्द से अनन्तरता (तुरन्त क्रम) कही गई है। उत्तम पुरुषों की प्रकृति अर्थात् स्वभाव, जिससे उत्साह उत्पन्न होता है, इसलिए वीर रस भी वैसा ही (उत्तम पुरुषों का) है।
This is Abhinava's first reading of uttama-prakṛti, taking it as a tatpuruṣa — 'the nature of the noble'. He offers a second, alternative reading at s4.
यह अभिनवगुप्त की उत्तम-प्रकृति की प्रथम व्याख्या है, जिसे वे तत्पुरुष मानते हैं — 'उत्तम पुरुषों की प्रकृति'। दूसरी वैकल्पिक व्याख्या वे s4 में देते हैं।

Or else, read it the other way: vīra, as it is presented in poetry and drama, is the rasa whose cause (hetu) is the noble character-type. Here 'uttama-prakṛti' is taken as a bahuvrīhi — 'having the noble type as its cause' — rather than as 'the nature of the noble'.
अथवा — काव्य और नाट्य में प्रयुक्त होता हुआ (वह वीर) जिसका हेतु उत्तम प्रकृति है।
A suspended alternative (yadi vā): Abhinava leaves both parsings of uttama-prakṛti standing — (s3) 'the nature of noble men', and (s4) 'that whose cause is the noble type'. Neither is dropped.
यह एक स्थगित विकल्प है (यदि वा) — अभिनवगुप्त उत्तम-प्रकृति के दोनों विच्छेदों को खड़ा रहने देते हैं — (s3) 'उत्तम पुरुषों की प्रकृति', और (s4) 'जिसका हेतु उत्तम प्रकृति है'। किसी को छोड़ा नहीं जाता।

Statecraft counts three regal powers (śakti-traya): prabhu-śakti (majesty), mantra-śakti (counsel), and utsāha-śakti (energy). Abhinava reads asammoha + adhyavasāya as marking the mantra-śakti among the vibhāvas.

Someone might say: asammoha means an obstinate clinging to a false object — as in Rāvaṇa — and that this is what fuels the drive. Abhinava rejects it. That reading is wrong, because it is simply not what the word asammoha means. Asammoha is clarity, not a stubborn grip on a delusion.
'असत् वस्तु में अभिनिवेश (आग्रह) असम्मोह है और वह रावण आदि में रहकर उत्साह उत्पन्न करता है' — यह मत ठीक नहीं, क्योंकि यह शब्द का अर्थ नहीं है।
Abhinava refutes a wrong gloss that would let even a Rāvaṇa's obstinacy count as asammoha. The word means freedom from confusion, so it cannot mean a firm hold on the unreal.
अभिनवगुप्त उस भ्रान्त व्याख्या का खण्डन करते हैं जो रावण जैसों के दुराग्रह को भी असम्मोह मान लेती। यह शब्द मोह के अभाव का बोधक है, अतः असत् वस्तु में दृढ़ आग्रह का अर्थ नहीं दे सकता।

And these factors work as vibhāvas only when they are present in full, developed form. A half-formed version of them will not do.

uttamasya kadācit kaścit adhikaḥ iti — 'of the noble hero, now this, now that one predominates'; pṛthak-pṛthak udāharaṇam asat — therefore to give separate examples one by one is wrong.
uttamasya — उत्तम नायक का; kadācit — कभी; kaścid adhikaḥ — कोई एक विभाव अधिक; iti — ऐसा मानकर; pṛthak-pṛthak udāharaṇam — प्रत्येक का पृथक्-पृथक् उदाहरण देना; asat — असत् (अनुचित) है।
Someone might argue: in a noble hero, sometimes one of these vibhāvas is the strongest, sometimes another — so we should supply a separate illustration for each. That is wrong.
कोई कहे कि उत्तम नायक में कभी कोई एक विभाव अधिक प्रबल रहता है, इसलिए हर विभाव का अलग-अलग उदाहरण देना चाहिए — यह मत ठीक नहीं है।

For in reality the illustration of vīra is no piecemeal instance — it is the whole life of a Rāma or a hero like him, taken entire. So no separate example per vibhāva is called for.

And when the hero's success depends on his minister — a hero of the Vatsarāja type, whose victories his counsellors engineer — these vibhāvas may sit in the minister rather than the king. Even so, as the case allows, they are to be credited to the hero.
और जहाँ नायक की सफलता उसके मन्त्री पर निर्भर हो — जैसे वत्सराज जैसे नायक में — वहाँ ये विभाव भले ही मन्त्री में रहते हों, फिर भी यथायोग्य नायक के ही माने जाते हैं।
Vatsarāja is Udayana, king of Vatsa; in plays such as the Ratnāvalī his triumphs are contrived by his minister Yaugandharāyaṇa, so the heroic vibhāvas reside in the minister yet count as the hero's own.
वत्सराज अर्थात् वत्सदेश के राजा उदयन; रत्नावली आदि नाटकों में उनकी विजय उनके मन्त्री यौगन्धरायण की योजना से सधती है, अतः वीर के विभाव मन्त्री में रहते हुए भी नायक के ही गिने जाते हैं।

karmaṇi ghañthe suffix ghañ is taken in the object-sense (karman), giving 'the thing sought' ghañ is a kṛt suffix; in the karman sense it derives artha as the object of seeking, not the actयहाँ कर्म अर्थ में घञ् प्रत्यय है, इसलिए अर्थ = चाहा जाने वाला विषय, न कि चाहने की क्रिया
dharmādi caturvargaḥand this 'artha' (of the ārya) is the fourfold set beginning with dharmaधर्म आदि चतुर्वर्ग (धर्म, अर्थ, काम, मोक्ष)
arthyate iti arthaḥ — artha is 'what is sought'; karmaṇi ghañ — ghañ in the objective sense; dharma-ādi caturvargaḥ — here the four-group of dharma and the rest.
arthyate ityarthaḥ — जो अर्थ्यते (चाहा जाता है) वह अर्थ; karmaṇi ghañ — कर्म अर्थ में घञ्; dharmādi caturvargaḥ — धर्म आदि चतुर्वर्ग।
The word artha means 'that which is sought after' — formed with the suffix ghañ in the object-sense, so it names the thing desired. And the 'artha' of the ārya verse here is the fourfold group: dharma, artha, kāma, mokṣa.
'अर्थ' शब्द 'अर्थ्यते' (जो चाहा जाता है) से बना है — यहाँ कर्म अर्थ में घञ् प्रत्यय है, इसलिए अर्थ चाहने की क्रिया नहीं, बल्कि चाहा जाने वाला विषय है। यह अर्थ धर्म, अर्थ, काम और मोक्ष — यही चतुर्वर्ग है।

In the raudra rasa it is the other way round. There possessive attachment — mamatā — is in charge, and it drives even lawless, improper fighting. So in fury, delusion and astonishment are exactly what dominate — the very things the hero of vīra has cast off.
परन्तु रौद्र रस में ममता प्रधान रहती है, इसलिए वहाँ शास्त्रविरुद्ध और अनुचित युद्ध आदि तक हो जाते हैं। सो वहाँ मोह और विस्मय की ही प्रधानता होती है।
The contrast is deliberate: vīra is defined by throwing off moha and vismaya, whereas in raudra, ruled by mamatā, those same two states come to the fore — the line that keeps the two martial rasas apart.
यही दोनों युद्धप्रधान रसों के बीच की भेदक रेखा है — वीर मोह और विस्मय को त्यागने से बनता है, जबकि रौद्र में, जहाँ ममता का शासन है, वही दोनों उभर आते हैं।

garva-padena tat-anubhāvaḥ lakṣyate — by 'garva' its anubhāva is indicated; utsāhanam utsāhaḥ abalasya viṣaṇṇa-prāyasya uttejanam — utsāha is the rousing of a weak, near-despondent man; yathā setubandha-kāvye — as in the Setubandha.
garvapadena tadanubhāvo lakṣyate — गर्व पद से उसका अनुभाव लक्षित; utsāhanam utsāhaḥ — उत्साहन ही उत्साह; abalasya viṣaṇṇaprāyasya uttejanaṁ — निर्बल, खिन्नप्राय का उत्तेजन; yathā setubandhakāvye — जैसे सेतुबन्ध काव्य में।
By the verse's word 'garva' (pride), Bharata means pride's outward display, its anubhāva. And 'utsāha' here carries the sense of rousing — firing up someone who is weak and near to giving up, as shown in the Setubandha poem.
'गर्व' शब्द से उसके अनुभाव का बोध कराया जाता है। उत्साहन अर्थात् किसी को उभारना ही उत्साह है — जैसे किसी निर्बल और लगभग हताश हुए साथी को उत्साहित करना, जैसा सेतुबन्ध काव्य में है।
The Setubandha (also called Rāvaṇavaha) is Pravarasena's Prakrit mahākāvya on the building of Rāma's causeway to Laṅkā.
सेतुबन्ध (रावणवध भी कहा जाता है) प्रवरसेन का प्राकृत महाकाव्य है, जिसमें राम के लंका तक सेतु बाँधने का वर्णन है।

parākramaḥ parākramaṇā — parākrama is valorous advance; ittham atra bhavadbhiḥ āsitavyaṁ yoddhavyam iti balasya vyāpāraṇā iti-kartavyatāyāṁ bhṛtyānāṁ prabhāvanā prabhāva-sampādanam — 'stand thus, fight thus' — directing the force in the ordering of duties and emboldening the men, is the producing of prabhāva.
Parākrama, valor, is the act of charging forward on the attack. And prabhāva means this: commanding the troops in the disposition of the battle — 'you stand here, you fight there' — setting the army to its tasks and putting heart into the men. That generating of authority is prabhāva.
पराक्रम का अर्थ है आक्रमणपूर्वक आगे बढ़ना। 'यहाँ आपको यों डटना है, यों युद्ध करना है' — इस प्रकार सेना को कार्य में लगाना, कर्तव्य के निर्धारण में भृत्यों को उत्साहित-प्रेरित करना — यही प्रभाव-सम्पादन है।

Ākṣepa means hinting at some further, unspoken matter. So when verse 68 speaks of 'words made by ākṣepa, with that as their chief force,' it is saying the hero's speeches carry a deep, hard-to-plumb meaning. (End of verse 68.)
आक्षेप का अर्थ है — किसी और गूढ़ बात की ओर इशारा करना। ऐसे आक्षेप से रचे गए और उसी की प्रधानता वाले जो वाक्य होते हैं, उनका अर्थ गम्भीर और कठिनता से थाह पाने योग्य होता है — यही (संग्रह-श्लोक में) कहा गया है।
