saṅgrāma-hetukaḥand it arises with battle (saṅgrāma) as its cause -hetuka = 'caused by'जिसका कारण संग्राम है
raudraḥ nāma — the rasa called raudra; krodha-sthāyi-bhāva-ātmakaḥ — at its core the stable emotion anger; rakṣo-dānava-uddhata-manuṣya-prakṛtiḥ — its native characters are rākṣasas, dānavas, and haughty men; saṅgrāma-hetukaḥ — arising from battle.
This is the rasa called raudra, the furious mood. What it essentially is, is the stable emotion anger (krodha). Its natural characters are the rākṣasas, the dānavas, and violent, haughty men. And it is set off by battle.
prakṛti — literally 'basic nature/original ground'; here the character-types in whom raudra is native. Abhinava (s9, s15) reads it further: the actor who dons that costume is the raudra's prakṛti, the ground from which the audience's relish rises.

And this raudra is produced by its vibhāvas — the things that excite it. These are: anger, assault, insult, lying speech, injury to one's own, harsh and threatening speech, the wish to harm, envy of others' good qualities, and the rest.
vibhāva — the 'determinant', the situational cause that awakens the emotion; here the provocations that kindle anger. Bharata lists them as a dvandva; Abhinava (s19–s24) glosses each in turn.

Abhinava (s35–s39) parses these: tāḍana = a blow with the palm etc.; pāṭana = cutting in two; pīḍā = crushing; chedana = severing; śastra-sampāta = a weapon striking even without piercing; samprahāra = a piercing strike, which then draws the blood.

And further, the acting is to be performed with these outward signs (anubhāvas): reddened eyes, a knitted brow, the lip bitten against the teeth, quivering cheeks, fingertips ground together, and the rest.
anubhāva — the 'consequent', the visible bodily reaction that lets the audience read the emotion. Abhinava's 'punaḥ' (s34–s35) marks the shift: once the provocation strikes, these signs grow pronounced.

The last four — sweat, trembling, horripilation, choked voice — are ordinarily sāttvika-bhāvas; Bharata folds them into the transient feelings here. Abhinava (s46–s48) flags that these can arise from other causes too, so they are only 'inconstant' markers of raudra.

The reply: yes, raudra rasa exists in others too. But what is being singled out here is whose it is by predominant right. It belongs to the rākṣasas and their kind primarily — not to their exclusion of everyone else.
adhikāra — 'entitlement, the domain one holds by first right'. Abhinava (s51) glosses it as anuvṛtti, the continuing thread: raudra is native to these beings, present in others only as it carries over to them.

For they are furious by their very nature — that is the point. On what grounds? Because their whole form is fearsome: many arms, many faces, tawny hair standing up wild and unkempt.
Abhinava (s57) explains the reason: their very shape is the reverse of the ordinary human form, so an onlooker reads a settled, wrath-bent intent into them even at rest.

Abhinava (s60–s61) ties these fixed features to nature, not to a passing mood: what in others shows only in a fit of anger — bloodshot eyes — is permanent in them, and their black form is a standing trait (nitya-yoga).

Abhinava (s63) restricts this: even when their mind is unmoved (cittasya avikāre'pi), the conduct they show still reads as raudra to a spectator, because striking and the like dominate their manner.

Even love-making, śṛṅgāra, is by them mostly pursued by force. So thoroughly furious is their nature that even the tender rasa turns violent in their hands.
Abhinava (s66–s67) reads śṛṅgāra here by its vibhāva — the pleasure-garden and such — enjoyed 'prasabham', in a cruel manner. 'prāyaśaḥ' (mostly, s70) leaves room for the rare case where they woo by coaxing instead.

Abhinava (s72–s73) glosses anukāriṇaḥ: being of a tāmasa nature, such men resemble the rākṣasas and so follow after them — raudra is 'admitted' for them by way of that likeness, through the combat they wage.

Abhinava (s87) notes the fierce touch: severing the head of an already-dead body signals an excess of wrath, and it is just this that marks raudra off from the valorous vīra, in whom such excess is absent.

Why does Bharata say the raudra 'consists of' (ātmaka) anger? Here is his point. Anger's proper object is, above all, a wrongdoer — one who does injustice. Saying 'ātmaka' fixes that anger, aimed at injustice, is the very substance of the rasa.
ātma-grahaṇa — Abhinava's regular move of asking why a particular word was chosen. 'ātmaka' ('having as its self') is read as declaring krodha the essence, not a mere ingredient, of raudra.

And toward such a wrongdoer, everyone — even if only in fantasy — longs to do the utmost, to drink his very blood. This shows how completely injustice is anger's fitting target: the response it draws is boundless.

The stacked 'api's build the extremity: even in imagination (not just in act), and even blood-drinking (the fiercest thing). The point is that a genuine wrongdoer provokes universal, unlimited wrath.

And people say as much: 'If you could get your hands on such a man, you would not be satisfied even after drinking his blood.'
Why cited: A popular saying (loka-ukti) adduced to confirm the previous point — that toward a real wrongdoer everyone thirsts, past all satisfaction, even for his blood; so injustice is indeed anger's fitting object.

mahā-kavinā bhāsena api — even the great poet Bhāsa; sva-prabandhe uktam — said in a work of his own; tretāyuge — in the Tretā age; sā na maithilī [kevalam], rāmasya rāga-padavī — she is not merely Maithilī, she is Rāma's path of love; mṛdu ca asya cetaḥ — and his heart is tender.
Even Bhāsa, a great poet, put this into one of his own plays. In the Tretā age, Sītā is not merely 'the Maithila princess' — she is the whole avenue of Rāma's love, and toward her his heart is nothing but tenderness. So runs the first pole of the verse; it is about to swing to the opposite pole, Rāvaṇa.
Why cited: The opening of Bhāsa's verse sets the tender-love pole (Rāma toward Sītā) against the rage pole it is about to state (all toward Rāvaṇa), illustrating that within one story love and murderous anger each find their proper object.
The quoted line is textually rough; the rendering follows the intelligible sense (Sītā as Rāma's love, his tender heart) and does not lean on the uncertain words.

janaḥ tu yadi rāvaṇam labdhā — but if people got hold of Rāvaṇa; asya kāyaṁ tilaśaḥ protkṛtya — carving his body into sesame-sized bits; [tat] na vitṛptim eti — even so reaches no satiety; iti — thus the verse.
But if people could get hold of Rāvaṇa, the verse goes on, and carve his body into sesame-seed shreds — even that would not bring them satisfaction. The love toward Sītā is matched by a rage toward the wrongdoer that no violence can slake.
Why cited: Bhāsa's verse is quoted to prove that toward the wrongdoer (Rāvaṇa) the appetite for violent retribution has no ceiling — even dismembering him leaves it unsated — confirming that anger's proper object is the unjust doer and that relishing his destruction is a common human response (s3-s5).
The words 'tanna tilaśo na' carry a doubled negative and are textually uncertain; the working sense (dismembering him would still not satiate) is clear from the context.

tena — therefore; carvaṇā api krodha-mayī eva — even the relishing is wholly of anger; iti tad-rasanāt — its very savoring being angry; raudraḥ krodha-ātmaka eva — the raudra is made of nothing but anger.
So here is the conclusion Bharata's word 'ātmaka' (made-of) was after. Even the aesthetic savoring of this rasa is nothing but anger — not a cooled-off, comic gloating, but relish that is itself angry through and through. And because the relishing is angry, the raudra is 'krodha-ātmaka' — of the very self of anger.
The opening compound 'hāsyavastādhāraṇavibhāvatvāt' is corrupt; the rendering keeps the certain conclusion (the carvaṇā is krodha-mayī, so raudra is krodha-ātmaka) and flags the uncertain premise rather than inventing one.

Now a rival reading. Some interpreters split the mula's cases: for haughty men such as Bhīmasena, they say, the raudra is caused by war, and shows itself in things like blood-drinking. (The other half of their view follows.)

It runs the other way round. Just because Bhīma's nature is already violent and overbearing, he, once anger had mastered him, bound himself by a vow to do even a thing improper. His innate rage came first and produced the vow; the war came after. So his blood-drinking flows from his svabhāva, not from war.

And to carry that vow through, the poet of the Veṇīsaṁhāra shows Bhīma taken over by a rākṣasa. Even the drama makes his rage a demon's rage — confirming that his raudra is of the innate, rākṣasa kind, not something the war produced.

The 'kavi' is Bhaṭṭa Nārāyaṇa, author of the Veṇīsaṁhāra. The rākṣasa-possession is adduced as poetic evidence that Bhīma's rage is of the same innate stamp as a demon's.

Bharata lists two kinds of consequent for raudra: 'actions' (karman) like beating and cutting, and 'anubhāvas' (reactions) like reddened eyes. Strictly, both are anubhāvas — both are outward effects of the rage. So why list them apart? To flag a real difference between them, which the next lines spell out.
A technical distinction. Both classes are effects of the rage, but they behave differently on stage. The 'actions' (tāḍana, cutting, seizing) are like a battle a messenger only narrates — gross deeds merely reported in words. The 'anubhāvas' (red eyes, knitted brows) are like the frown the actor makes before your eyes — shown, not told. Bharata separates the two because one class is enacted and the other only described (s26-s27, s29).

raṅge pratyakṣataḥ apradarśanīya-tvāt — because they may not be shown directly on stage; yat vakṣyate — as he will say; yuddhaṁ rājya-bhraṁśaḥ maraṇaṁ nagara-uparodhanaṁ ca eva — 'war, dethronement, death, and a city's siege...'.
And why only told, not shown? Because such things are not to be enacted directly on the stage. Abhinava points ahead to Bharata's own later rule: 'war, the fall of a kingdom, death, the siege of a city...' — the verse he is about to quote lists just the gross events that stay off the visible stage. (The anubhāvas, red eyes and the rest, are by contrast shown directly.)
Why cited: NŚ 18.38 is adduced to prove that gross violent events (war, dethronement, death, a city's siege) are kept off the visible stage — which is exactly why raudra's 'actions' (tāḍana etc.) can only be described in words, not enacted, unlike its anubhāvas, which are shown directly.

The quoted rule finishes: whatever is done off-stage — war, loss of kingdom, death, the siege of a city — is to be handled through interludes (praveśaka), not shown before the eyes.
Why cited: cited (Nāṭyaśāstra 18.38) to show that violent events are conveyed off-stage through interludes, supporting the point that the karmāṇi like striking are only described in words, never enacted directly.

'Of others' means the characters a poet writes and an actor plays. Their raudra is a produced thing — generated in them by the play — unlike the demons', which is inborn. And when Bharata says 'the adhikāra is taken here', adhikāra means anuvṛtti: the topic simply carries over to them.

Bharata puts 'eva' straight after 'svabhāva' — 'svabhāvata eva raudraḥ.' Here 'eva' means 'they certainly are raudra by nature.' It does the job grammarians call ayoga-vyavaccheda — ruling out that the quality might fail to belong. It does not mean 'they alone are raudra.' So the door stays open for others to be raudra too.
ayoga-vyavaccheda vs. anya-yoga-vyavaccheda: 'eva' can rule out the predicate's failing to belong ('the conch is white indeed' — affirming the tie), or rule out others sharing it ('Pārtha alone is the archer'). Here it is the first: 'they certainly are raudra', not 'they alone are.'

Take the other reading — 'eva' as 'they alone.' Then only a naturally raudra being could ever be portrayed with red eyes and the other anger-marks. That is plainly wrong, and it shows why 'eva' cannot mean 'alone' here.

So even where the deed's fruit is unseen — their very austerities — the audience still infers the same anger-driven intent behind it. And thus the relish of raudra arises inwardly in the spectators. The demons never step outside their raudra.
The transmitted 'nāntardṛśyate' carries an editorial crux (variant 'kānāntardṛśyate'); the sense the argument requires is that raudra-relish does arise within the spectators, since demons are read as raudra even in unprovoked, hidden-fruit deeds.

This is why Bharata calls them bhīmāsitarūpiṇaḥ — 'having a fearsome black form.' Asita here just means black, dark. And he forms the word with the suffix '-in', which marks permanent possession: the dark, terrible form is theirs always, not now and then.
The possessive '-in' suffix (matvarthīya) here denotes nitya-yoga, a standing, permanent connection — the form belongs to them constantly, not occasionally.

For the same reason Bharata did not use a bahuvrīhi like 'bhīmāsita-rūpa'; he chose the '-in' word to fix the permanence. Now he moves further: not only is their body raudra in this way, but every action of theirs, once seen, generates nothing but raudra-relish. He shows this with 'yacca kiñcit...' — 'whatever they undertake.'

Why 'ca', 'even'? Because love is the one rasa where fierceness is expressly to be avoided. If even here they turn savage, then needless to say everything else of theirs is raudra. That is the point of the little word 'ca'. He then gives an example, beginning 'ā...'.

evam — thus; rakṣodānavetyādau — in the passage 'of rākṣasas and dānavas...'; ayogavyavacchedaḥ niścitaḥ — the 'exclusion-of-non-connection' is established.
This settles what the emphatic force back in 'of the rākṣasas, dānavas...' was doing. It affirms that raudra surely belongs to them; it does not claim that raudra belongs to them alone.
Two jobs an emphatic 'eva' can do. Ayogavyavaccheda excludes the non-connection — 'the lotus is surely blue,' ruling out 'not-blue' and affirming the quality really holds. Anyayogavyavaccheda excludes the other connection — 'Arjuna alone is the archer,' ruling out everyone else. Here the demons' raudra is read the first way (they surely have it), not the second (they alone have it) — as the next lines confirm.

Even in these heroes, when the cause is strong enough, anger does arise — anger fit to be relished as raudra. So raudra is not fenced off to the demons alone.

And the reverse holds too. Even in the demons, laughter and grief and so on arise from their own proper causes; and when they do, anger is pushed into the background. So the demons are not always in a rage either.

An objection. When the audience watches demons raging on stage, how can what they taste be anger itself? Anger is painful — who would relish it? The answer: relish is heart-consonance — the spectator's own heart resonating with what is shown.

But this heart-consonance with anger belongs only to spectators who are themselves tāmasic by temperament. Being like the dānavas, they merge with them and relish the anger — anger aimed at the one who does wrong. Since the anger has a just target, there is nothing objectionable in relishing it.

He unpacks 'ugra-karma-kriyātmaka' as a bahuvrīhi. 'Fierce deeds' (ugra-karma) are the predominantly ferocious ones — head-cutting and the like. Their 'doing' (kriyā) — the carrying-out — is the 'essence' (ātmā), the chief element. So raudra is the rasa whose very core is the execution of such fierce deeds.
The printed reading 'yā kriyā apa nītiḥ' is corrupt at this point; the sense taken here is kriyā = the carrying-out of those fierce deeds, which the compound makes the ātmā (chief element) — the standard bahuvrīhi resolution.
