karuṇo nāmathe karuṇa (the rasa of grief and pity), so called the word 'nāma' ('by name') is doing work — Abhinava (s13) reads it as marking karuṇa as a name given to relished śoka, not a raw feelingकरुण नामक रस

karuṇo nāma — the one called karuṇa; śoka-sthāyi-bhāva-prabhavaḥ — has grief as its abiding emotion for its source; sa ca śāpa-kleśa-...-vyasana-saṁyoga-ādibhiḥ vibhāvaiḥ samupajāyate — and it arises from vibhāvas such as a curse's affliction, separation from a ruined loved one, loss of wealth, slaying, captivity, exile, injury, and running into calamity.
This is the definition of karuṇa, the rasa of grief and pity. Its sthāyī-bhāva — the durable emotion underneath it — is śoka, grief. And it is stirred up by vibhāvas, the exciting causes: the sting of a curse, being parted from a dear one who has fallen on ruin, losing one's wealth, a killing, imprisonment, being chased out of one's homeland, bodily injury, or being caught in some calamity — and others like them. The word 'nāma', 'by name', is placed deliberately; Abhinava will make much of it — karuṇa is the name given to grief once it is relished.
sthāyī-bhāva = the 'abiding' emotion that underlies a rasa (here śoka, grief); vibhāva = the exciting cause that stirs it. The whole passage runs parallel to the śṛṅgāra treatment — see Abhinava at s13, 'to be explained just as with śṛṅgāra.'

abhinayaḥ prayoktavyaḥthe acting-out is to be performedअभिनय करना चाहिए
tasya — of this karuṇa; aśru-pāta-paridevana-...-smṛti-lopa-ādibhiḥ anubhāvaiḥ — with anubhāvas such as falling tears, wailing, a dry mouth, pallor, drooping limbs, sighing, and loss of memory; abhinayaḥ prayoktavyaḥ — the acting is to be carried out.
Now the anubhāva side — the outward signs by which the actor conveys the grief. Karuṇa is to be enacted through reactions like these: tears falling, wailing lament, the mouth drying up, the face going pale, the limbs hanging limp, deep sighing, memory failing — and the rest. These are what the actor shows on stage so the grief becomes visible.
anubhāva = the outward, enacted consequence of the emotion (tears, pallor, sighing), as against the vibhāva that causes it and the vyabhicārin that flits across it.

And here are the vyabhicāri-bhāvas of karuṇa — the passing moods that come and go across the standing grief. Bharata lists a long string: despondency, exhaustion, anxious brooding, longing, agitation, dizziness, fainting, weariness, fear, dejection, helplessness, sickness, numb stupor, madness, seizures, terror, listlessness, even death, stiffening of the body, trembling, going pale, weeping, the voice cracking — and more besides. These flicker over the grief without being the grief itself.
vyabhicāri-bhāva (also sañcāri-bhāva) = a 'wandering', transitory feeling that rises and subsides while the sthāyī (grief) abides. Some items here (pallor, tears) also appeared as anubhāvas above; Abhinava addresses that overlap at s24-s27.

Bharata now caps the prose definition with two āryā-metre verses. This atom carries the first half of the first āryā: karuṇa may be set off either by seeing a dear one killed, or even just by hearing hostile, wounding words. Note the pairing — grief can be triggered by what is seen or merely by what is heard; the verse completes in the next line.
āryā = a mātrā (moraic) metre commonly used for summarizing verses. This is a lakṣaṇa (definition) verse, not an udāharaṇa; its second half is P-karuna.5.

A single connecting word, 'atha', 'now'. It marks the turn to the next rasa in order. Abhinava will note that this 'atha' means 'in sequence' — karuṇa taken up at its proper place in the series, not started afresh.

atha here = krama ('in due order'), per Abhinava at s2 — the transition-word placing karuṇa at its turn in the run of rasas.

Abhinava opens by saying what Bharata is doing: now, its turn having come, he defines karuṇa, in the words 'atha karuṇo nāma'. And he pins down that opening word: 'atha' here means 'in sequence' — karuṇa treated at its proper place in the order of rasas.

Abhinava now reports the ṭīkākāra's explanation of why the rasas fall in this order. On that account: hāsya, the comic, is placed where it is because love-in-union (sambhoga-śṛṅgāra) calls for it as a subordinate limb — the comic attends on fulfilled love. This is the first step of the ṭīkākāra's ordering argument, which Abhinava is setting up to reject.
sambhoga = the 'union' phase of śṛṅgāra (love fulfilled), as against vipralambha (love-in-separation) named next. aṅga = a subordinate limb serving a principal rasa. The view is the ṭīkākāra's, not Abhinava's.

The second step of the ṭīkākāra's account: and karuṇa is placed here because it shares its vyabhicāri-bhāvas — its passing moods — with vipralambha, love-in-separation. Grief and separated love flit through the same transient states, so karuṇa is set alongside. All this, Abhinava notes, is the ṭīkākāra's reasoning.

vipralambha = love-in-separation, whose moods (longing, dejection, fainting) overlap heavily with grief's — the ṭīkākāra's ground for slotting karuṇa here. Attributed to the ṭīkākāra and about to be rejected; not to be harmonized with Abhinava's own view.

Abhinava rejects the ṭīkākāra. That explanation, he says, is inconsistent with what the text says both before and after it — it does not hang together. And in any case it is unnecessary: we ourselves already settled the order back in the uddeśa (the bare enumeration) and the vibhāga (the fuller division) of the rasas. The ordering was fixed there, not by these ad hoc reasons.
uddeśa (concise listing) and vibhāga (detailed division) are the two earlier stages where Abhinava holds the sequence of rasas was already established — so the ṭīkākāra's re-derivation is both faulty and redundant.

Abhinava unpacks the mūla's 'tasya' ('of it'). What is it whose acting is to be performed? It is grief — but grief precisely as it is being relished; and grief-being-relished is exactly what earns the name 'karuṇa'. So 'karuṇa' is not raw sorrow but sorrow savoured. This is already Abhinava steering toward his own doctrine.

vyapadeśa = a designation, a name assigned. Abhinava's signature claim surfaces here: karuṇa is the name of śoka in the mode of āsvāda (relishing) — spelled out fully at s12.

Now Abhinava quotes an opposing view, that of Śrī Śaṅkuka. Śaṅkuka begins from everyday usage: the word 'karuṇā' commonly means compassion, tenderness of heart — that is how the world uses it. He will build the rasa's name on this ordinary sense of pity.

Śaṅkuka completes his account. The spectators watch the actor — the imitator — and from the signs he displays they infer grief in him. Their response to that inferred grief is compassion, karuṇā. Because the spectators feel this pity, the rasa gets the name 'karuṇa'. So Śaṅkuka: the rasa is named for the audience's compassion toward a grief they read off the actor's signs.
anukartṛ = 'the imitator', the actor on Śaṅkuka's imitation-theory; liṅga = the inferential sign. The whole naming rests on the spectators' inferred pity — the point Abhinava dismantles next.

Abhinava presses the point by holding Śaṅkuka to the very ordinary usage he appealed to. In common speech, karuṇā means the countering of someone's grief — acting to relieve it; and dayā, pity, means the wish to rescue the sufferer. Compassion, properly, is an impulse toward another's aid.
śoka-pratikṛti = the counteraction / remedy of grief; paritrāṇa-icchā = the wish to save. Abhinava fixes the everyday meaning of karuṇā/dayā precisely so as to show it cannot do the work Śaṅkuka assigned it.

Two questions finish the refutation. First: if karuṇā means compassion — an urge to relieve grief — how can it be an imitation of grief, as Śaṅkuka's whole imitation-theory requires? Compassion and mimed sorrow are not the same thing. Second: toward whom is this pity supposed to be aimed? There is no real sufferer on stage to rescue. On both counts, says Abhinava, Śaṅkuka's account makes no sense to us.
The double thrust: (1) dayā ≠ anukaraṇa — compassion is not the imitation Śaṅkuka's system is built on; (2) the spectators' pity has no object, since no one actually needs saving. Together they collapse the naming Śaṅkuka proposed.

Here is Abhinava's own conclusion. 'Karuṇa' is simply the name for śoka, grief, when — by the universalization argued earlier — it has been made common to everyone and so becomes something relished rather than merely suffered. Grief lifted out of any one person's private loss, made everyone's, and thereby savoured: that relished grief is what we call karuṇa. This is the siddhānta against both the ṭīkākāra and Śaṅkuka.
sarva-sādhāraṇatva = the 'made-common-to-all' quality, Abhinava's sādhāraṇīkaraṇa (universalization) by which a particular emotion is de-individualized and becomes relishable; prāg-yukti = 'the reasoning already given', i.e. Abhinava's earlier treatment of rasa. Karuṇa = the saṁjñā (name) of universalized, relished śoka — his settled position.

tat-artham eva nāma-śabdaḥ — for that very purpose is the word 'nāma'; tat-prabhavatvaṁ śṛṅgāravat vyākhyeyam — its arising-from-grief is to be explained just as with śṛṅgāra.
Two quick points. First, this is exactly why Bharata wrote 'nāma', 'by name', in 'karuṇo nāma' — the word flags that 'karuṇa' is a designation given to relished grief, which is the whole point Abhinava just made. Second, the phrase 'arising from grief' (śoka-prabhava) in the definition is to be construed the same way it was for śṛṅgāra — grief is the sthāyī that ripens into the rasa, exactly as rati ripens into śṛṅgāra.
The word 'nāma' is read as load-bearing: it marks 'karuṇa' as a name, not a bare feeling. tat-prabhavatva ('having that for its source') parallels the śṛṅgāra model, where the sthāyī-bhāva becomes the rasa.

Abhinava starts glossing the mūla's list of vibhāvas. When Bharata names 'śāpa', a curse, he does not mean only literal curses. The curse stands in as an example for any cause of grief against which nothing can be done — an irremediable blow. It is named not for its own sake but to point to the whole class of hopeless causes.
upalakṣaṇa vs viśeṣaṇa: a viśeṣaṇa describes the very thing it is attached to — 'the blue lotus', where blueness is part of the lotus; an upalakṣaṇa only points you to something by an incidental mark — 'the house with the crow on it', where the crow is no part of the house but merely locates it. Here 'śāpa' is an upalakṣaṇa: it does not define grief's cause but flags the class of irremediable causes, of which a curse is one instance.

Abhinava now parses how the long mūla compound holds together. 'Fallen into the affliction of a curse' describes the loved one; and it is that loved one's separation, and the other misfortunes after it, that stir the grief. So read it: a dear person is struck by a curse's affliction, and then comes parting from him, and the rest of the calamities — these are the vibhāvas.
Abhinava is resolving the compound śāpakleśa-vinipatita-iṣṭajana-viprayoga...: 'vinipatita' (fallen) qualifies the iṣṭajana (loved one), and viprayoga (separation) and the following items are what befall that cursed loved one.

The term 'loss of memory' also carries stambha (going rigid) and pralaya (fainting). And pallor, tears, and the cracking voice — though they show on the outside — are here understood as essentially inner states of mind.
These are sāttvika-bhāvas: bodily signs that spring from and betray an inner state, so Abhinava reads them as mind-states first, outward marks second.

Why cited: adduced to show that aśru (tears) here names an inner state of mind, not merely the outward flow — the throat 'full of tears' while the eyes stay dry.
