hāsyaḥ nāmathe hāsya-rasa (the comic mood), namely —हास्य नामक (रस)
hāsa-sthāyi-bhāva-ātmakaḥhas hāsa (mirth) as its stable emotion (sthāyibhāva) for its very soul -ātmaka = 'whose soul (ātman) is…'; the sthāyin is what the rasa is built on — Abhinava fastens on this one word in s2जिसकी आत्मा (मूल स्वरूप) हास नामक स्थायी भाव है
saḥ ca … vibhāvaiḥ utpadyateand it arises from the following determinants (vibhāvas)और वह इन विभावों से उत्पन्न होता है
vikṛta-para-veṣa-alaṅkāraanother person's out-of-place dress and ornaments vikṛta = at odds with place, time, nature, age or state (so Abhinava, s7); veṣa = hair-and-such arrangement, alaṅkāra = bracelets and the like (s6)दूसरे के विकृत (अनुचित) वेष और अलंकार
dhārṣṭyaimpudence — that is, shamelessness (so Abhinava, s12)धृष्टता (निर्लज्जता)
kuhakaplayful trickery — touching the armpit, neck and so on to startle, the way one amuses children (s13)कुहक (छल, इन्द्रजाल जैसा)
vyaṅga-darśanashowing off a deformed limbविकलांग का दिखना
doṣa-udāharaṇapointing out someone's faults — i.e. describing them aloud (s16)दोषों का वर्णन
ādibhiḥand the like — e.g. a comic resolve, a memory, and so on (s16)आदि से
hāsyaḥ nāma hāsa-sthāyi-bhāva-ātmakaḥ — the hāsya-rasa has mirth for its stable emotion and soul; saḥ ca vikṛta-para-veṣa-alaṅkāra-dhārṣṭya-laulya-kuhaka-asat-pralāpa-vyaṅga-darśana-doṣa-udāharaṇa-ādibhiḥ vibhāvaiḥ utpadyate — and it arises from determinants such as another's odd dress and ornaments, impudence, greed, trickery, silly chatter, showing a deformed limb, and pointing out faults
Bharata defines the hāsya-rasa, the comic mood. Its stable emotion (sthāyibhāva) is hāsa, mirth — and that mirth is its very soul. It arises from determinants (vibhāvas) like these: someone else's odd, out-of-place dress and ornaments; impudence; greedy unrestraint; startling little tricks; silly chatter; showing a deformed limb; pointing out people's faults; and the like. These are the outward causes a playwright supplies to raise a laugh.
sthāyibhāva — the one lasting emotion at the root of a rasa (mirth for hāsya, love for śṛṅgāra); vibhāva — its determinants, the outward causes that occasion it.

Now the performer's side. The actor plays hāsya through its consequents (anubhāvas) — the visible reactions: a quiver of the lip, nose and cheek; the eyes opening wide and narrowing; sweat; a flush on the face; hands clutching the sides; and so on. These are what the body actually does when it laughs.
anubhāva — the outward reaction that shows the emotion, the actor's means of conveying it, as against the vibhāva that causes it.

And its transitory feelings (vyabhicāri-bhāvas), the moods that come and go around the mirth: dissimulation, languor, drowsiness (a dazed stupor, says Abhinava), sleep, dreaming, waking, and so on. Abhinava adds (s19) that these — with the determinants and consequents just listed — are to be fitted, as suits each case, to the smita-and-the-rest divisions coming up.
vyabhicāri-bhāva — a fleeting, subordinate emotion that surfaces and fades while the one sthāyin holds steady beneath.

Bharata now splits hāsya in two: self-based (ātmastha) and other-based (parastha). When the person laughs himself, that is the self-based kind.

The first summarizing āryā opens: it is by inverted, unbecoming ornaments, and by distorted conduct, distorted speech and distorted dress — (the verb comes in the next line).
This line and P-hasya.7 together make one āryā, the first of the two verses announced in P-hasya.5.

The verb of the first āryā arrives: because one laughs at all these distorted particulars, the rasa is handed down by name as hāsya. The name is read straight off the act — hāsa, laughing.

The second āryā gives the definition as a 'because-therefore.' Because by distorted conduct, distorted words, contortions of the body and distorted dress one makes people laugh — for that reason the rasa is to be known as hāsya. The comic is defined by what provokes the laugh.

ratiḥ āsvādana-ākhyāṁ pratītiṁ vidadhānārati, while producing the experience we call relishing (āsvāda)रति जो आस्वादन नामक प्रतीति (अनुभूति) को उत्पन्न करती है

atha hāsyaṁ lakṣayitum āha — atha iti; ātma-śabdena idam āha — ratiḥ āsvādana-ākhyāṁ pratītiṁ vidadhānā tāṁ rati-rūpām eva na vidhatte — now, to define hāsya he speaks with 'atha'; and by the word 'ātman' he means this: rati, while yielding the relished experience, does not yield it as merely rati-shaped
Abhinava opens. Now, to define hāsya, Bharata speaks — starting from the word 'atha.' Then Abhinava fastens on one word in the prose definition: the -ātmaka in 'hāsa-sthāyibhāv-ātmaka,' 'having mirth for its soul.' Why call the sthāyin the rasa's soul? Because a sthāyin, once it ripens into the relished experience (āsvāda), is no longer simply itself. Take rati, love: as it yields the savour we relish, it does not deliver that savour as bare rati. The relish is something more than the raw feeling — and that surplus is what the word 'ātmaka' is pointing to.
āsvāda — the relishing that turns a raw sthāyibhāva into rasa; Abhinava's point is that the relished state, while grounded in the sthāyin, is not reducible to it. This sets up his discussion (s3 onward) of why Bharata says hāsya 'arises' and how its relish is shared (sādhāraṇya).

Abhinava carries on from s2. The relish of rati is not sealed inside rati, because the vibhāvas are held in common across rasas. Take the relish felt in laughter: deformed dress and the like make an audience laugh in ordinary life, and through that very sharing of vibhāvas the comic relish turns out to be one in nature with the relish of rati — the same thing is being savoured in comic relishing. Then he adds a further, harder point, which he sets down as another doctrine's way of putting it: rati and śoka alone stand out from the eight, for they are pleasure and pain that have risen into an unbroken stream, felt as exclusively one's own; and it is by the force of that 'mine-alone' grip that the two arise as they do. That, he says, is why the muni reached for the word 'source' (prabhava) precisely of these two.
prabhava, 'source/origin,' is the muni's derivation-language elsewhere in the rasa chapter, where one rasa is said to arise from another — hāsya from śṛṅgāra (whose sthāyin is rati), karuṇa from śoka. Abhinava is defending why that origination-word suits rati and śoka in particular: their pleasure and pain are continuous and felt as one's own, unlike the freely shared vibhāvas. The 'other doctrine' (para-mata) he cites is left standing here, not endorsed.

For the remaining rasas the case is weaker. There the sharing of the vibhāva is merely conceivable, not fixed as it is with rati and śoka. So for those the muni said only 'having that for its nature' (tad-ātmaka) — reserving the stronger word 'source' (prabhava) for the two he singled out.

He proves the sharing with a homely case. One and the same wrongdoer — a man who tramples law and discipline — rouses in all who watch him heroic resolve, anger, fear, disgust, and wonder, all at once. So too any unprecedented thing, like death. A single vibhāva thus feeds five rasas together, which is just what 'a shared vibhāva' means. And with that, Abhinava breaks off: enough of this; the point is made.

The five sthāyins map to the five 'other' rasas: utsāha→vīra, krodha→raudra, bhaya→bhayānaka, jugupsā→bībhatsa, vismaya→adbhuta. One shared vibhāva sparking all five is the evidence that vibhāvas are not tied to a single rasa.

Both dress and ornament, once deformed, become the vibhāva of the comic. And 'deformed' (vikṛta) has a precise sense: out of keeping with the place, the time, the person's own nature, his age, or his condition. A clash on any one of these five turns the get-up comic.

This yields a large conclusion. Since deforming whatever is proper to any rasa turns it comic, every rasa can be folded into hāsya. So it has been shown, Abhinava says, that all the rasas are contained within the comic.

ābhāsa can carry either 'mere semblance' or 'coming-to-appearance/shining-forth'; paired here with prathayati ('spreads, displays'), it reads as the comic being made to show forth rather than as a defective rasa.

Abhinava turns to the mūla's 'this is twofold.' Here is the reading he will put to the test: when the jester, by vibhāvas seated in himself — his own deformed get-up and such — laughs on his own account, that comic is 'self-seated' (ātmastha) for him. This is the first horn of the division as some would take it.

Here is the first flaw. On that reading the self-/other-seated split falls on the vibhāvas — a matter of whose get-up is working on whom — and not on the hāsa at all. But the mūla means to divide the comic itself into two kinds. So the reading has divided the wrong thing.

A second flaw. A master's grief kindles grief in his servants; by this definition that would make grief 'other-seated' too. Then other-seatedness would crop up in every rasa, not the comic alone — so it cannot be what marks off hāsya's special twofold division. The label proves too much.

Suppose you retreat to a revised rule: the comic arises in oneself but is shown forth in another — the queen — and that is what 'other-seated' means. Even so it fails. A grave master keeps his own anger off his face, and it becomes visible only through his servants' reactions. By your revised rule that anger too would count as 'other-seated.' The label still spreads past hāsya into other rasas, so the account collapses either way.

A second attempt to rescue the ātmastha/parastha split: the comic stimulus itself is self-situated (ātmastha), sitting in the one who laughs; so what makes another laugh (anya-vibhāvaka) must be a separate, 'other-situated' thing. Abhinava answers: this too is wrong.

Abhinava's reply. On that account another's laughter would be nothing more than one stimulus among the stimuli of your own laugh. But that is true of every rasa — another's love can stir your love, another's grief your grief. So it fails to single out any special 'other-situated' hāsa.

tasmāt ayam atra arthaḥso here is what it really means — tasmāt signals the siddhānta: after knocking the rescues down, Abhinava settles the senseइसलिए यहाँ यह अर्थ है (यही सिद्धान्त है)

hasan loke dṛṣṭaḥis [nonetheless] seen laughing, as everyone knows (loke)लोक में हँसता हुआ देखा जाता है
tasmāt ayam atra arthaḥ — so this is the real sense here: paraṁ hasantaṁ dṛṣṭvā svayaṁ vibhāvān apaśyan api hasan loke dṛṣṭaḥ — seeing another laugh, a man who sees nothing funny of his own is still caught laughing, as all the world has observed
So Abhinava settles what 'other-situated' (parastha) hāsya really means. You see someone else laughing and — though you yourself see nothing funny, no stimulus of your own — you are caught laughing too. Everyone has watched this happen. That, not the earlier gloss, is the point.

Even when the comic stimuli are present, a dignified man may hold his laugh in check out of gravity — yet the instant he sees another laugh, he is swept helplessly into laughter. Such is laughter's nature. Take the analogy Abhinava gives. When you watch someone taste a sour pomegranate, your own mouth waters just from seeing his mouth water — the sour taste's reaction passes over by sight alone. Map it: the sour taste is the hāsa; the watering mouth you see is another's laughter; your own watering mouth is your answering laugh. What it proves: laughter, like that reaction, passes from one person to another by its very nature. And that is why hāsya spreads more abundantly than any other rasa.

ata eva vyavasthaḥ hāsaḥ iti vakṣyate — for just this reason it will be said that hāsa is of settled states; ṣaḍ-avasthaḥ hi anyathā syāt — for otherwise it would be six-stated
This is why Bharata will call hāsya a thing of settled states — v61 counts it three-stated (tryavastha), not six. If the six were independent intensities, hāsya would carry six states; pairing them by transmission keeps the count fixed at three.

iti upasarga-bhedāt artha-bhedaḥso the difference of meaning comes purely from the difference of prefix (upasarga)इस प्रकार उपसर्ग के भेद से अर्थ का भेद (होता है)
smitasya īṣattāyāṁ vyapagatāyāṁ hasitaṁ — the slightness gone, smita is hasita; tataḥ viśeṣeṇa [vihasitam] — more distinctly, vihasita; tataḥ api parasya samīpaṁ gatam [upahasitam] — nearer still, upahasita; anyat apahasitam — apart, apahasita; atiśayena ca [atihasitam] — and by excess, atihasita; iti upasarga-bhedāt artha-bhedaḥ — thus difference of prefix, difference of meaning
Abhinava parses the six names by their prefixes on the one root has-. smita is the slight smile; drop its slightness and it is hasita; vi- makes vihasita more pronounced; upa- brings upahasita right up to the next pitch; apa- turns apahasita aside, off-key; ati- pushes atihasita to sheer excess. One root, shifted by prefix alone — upasarga-bheda yields artha-bheda, a change of prefix a change of sense.
upasarga — a verbal prefix (vi-, upa-, apa-, ati-); Sanskrit grammar holds that adding one bends the base meaning, and Abhinava reads the whole set of laugh-names as this one root re-pointed five ways.

Glossing the definition verses. sauṣṭhava is gracefulness without excess; dvijāḥ are the teeth; dhīra means measured and unhurried — that keeps a smile a smile. Then, to lift the expression past a slight smile into hasita, the verse says vikāsitaiḥ, 'with cheeks fully open.' The next word he picks up is atha.

'tad' points back to the smile: the same smita, once transmitted, takes on the hasita form. Again the whole point is transmission, not a fresh grade of intensity.

How love and the rest do spread, without any transmission: either one and the same object stirs the feeling in several people at once, or a person who already carries the feeling becomes himself a stimulus for it in another. Either way the feeling is freshly caused, not relayed across as a laugh is.

What does not happen with love and the rest is the laugh-style relay: the same stimuli first raise the feeling in one man and then hand it across to a second man who is only just forming his own. That relay belongs to hāsa alone.

The anye take Bharata's ātmastha/parastha as such a carry-over pointer for all rasas; Abhinava denies it.

Here is the ground for rejecting that other view. That laughter spreads from one person to another is something we know straight from experience — you watch someone laugh and you laugh too, with nothing further to be proved. Because this spreading is felt plainly and belongs to laughter in particular, the self-based / other-based split cannot be stretched, as those others wanted, into a mark that fits every rasa alike.

But another teacher reads verse 61 differently. He says hāsya, spread across the three character-types — highest, middling, lowest — carries three states, one answering to each type. And because its exciting cause (vibhāva) comes in a stronger and a weaker degree, each of those states splits into two forms. So far: three, doubled to six.

punarātmaparasthatvena dvidheti dvādaśabhedo'yamiti kārikātātparyamiti |
punaḥ ātmaparasthatvena dvidhāthen, once more, twofold by the self-based (ātmastha) and other-based (parastha) distinction punaḥ = 'a second doubling'; instrumental -tvena = 'by way of being self- or other-based'फिर आत्मस्थ और परस्थ होने के भेद से वह दो प्रकार का — 'पुनः' यह दूसरी बार का दुगुनापन है
iti dvādaśabhedaḥ ayamso this comes out as a twelvefold division 3 states × 2 forms × 2 (self/other) = 12इस प्रकार यह हास्य बारह भेदों वाला बनता है (तीन अवस्थाएँ × दो रूप × दो = बारह)
iti kārikātātparyam itiand that, he claims, is the real purport (tātparya) of the kārikā (verse 61) the doubled iti closes the reported view — 'so he says'ऐसा इस कारिका का तात्पर्य है — दो 'इति' उद्धृत मत को समाप्त करते हैं, अर्थात् 'ऐसा वह कहता है'
punaḥ ātmaparasthatvena dvidhā — again twofold by self-based / other-based; iti dvādaśabhedaḥ ayam — so this is a twelvefold division; iti kārikātātparyam — such is the intent of the verse.
And then, he continues, each of those six doubles once more by the self-based / other-based split. Three states, times two forms, times two again — twelve divisions in all. That, this other teacher insists, is what verse 61 is really driving at.

atra ca pṛthagvibhāvanamapi bhavati | tattvatiprasaṅgāvahaṁ tanmatamiti nodāhṛtama |
atra ca pṛthagvibhāvanam api bhavatiand on this scheme a further, separate reckoning of the vibhāvas arises as well atra = 'in this twelvefold counting'; api = 'on top of everything, yet another'और इस (बारहगुनी गणना) में एक पृथक् विभावन (अलग-अलग विभाजन) भी और हो जाता है
tat tu atiprasaṅgāvahambut that leads to atiprasaṅga — an over-extension that keeps multiplying divisions past where they should stop tu marks Abhinava turning against the view; āvaha = 'bringing on, dragging in'परन्तु वह मत अतिप्रसंग को खींच लाने वाला है — 'तु' से अभिनव उस मत के विरुद्ध मुड़ते हैं, 'आवह' अर्थात् ले आने वाला
tanmatam iti na udāhṛtamso that view (mata) is not adopted or set out here na udāhṛtam = 'not adduced, not illustrated' — Abhinava declines itइसलिए वह मत यहाँ उदाहरण के रूप में नहीं लिया गया — अभिनव उसे अस्वीकार कर देते हैं
atra ca pṛthagvibhāvanam api bhavati — and here a separate reckoning also arises; tat tu atiprasaṅgāvaham — but that leads to over-extension; tanmatam iti na udāhṛtam — so that view is not adduced.
And on this twelvefold scheme, Abhinava notes, a further separate reckoning of the causes creeps in on top. But that runs into atiprasaṅga — it over-reaches, forcing the divisions to keep multiplying past any natural stopping point. For that reason Abhinava does not take up that teacher's view or lay it out here.
atiprasaṅga is the standard fault of over-extension: a rule or scheme that, once granted, ends up applying where it should not and breeding cases without warrant. Here the twelvefold count would drag in still more separate distinctions — its own undoing.
