bhaṭṭanāyakastvāha —raso na pratīyate, notpadyate, nābhivyajyate|
bhaṭṭanāyakaḥ tu āhaBhaṭṭa Nāyaka, however, says tu marks the turn to a third, opposed view — after Lollaṭa (u02) and Śaṅkuka (u03)परन्तु भट्टनायक कहते हैं — ('tu' से लोल्लट और शंकुक के बाद तीसरे, विरोधी मत की ओर मोड़)
rasaḥ na pratīyaterasa is not cognized the strike against Śaṅkuka's pratīti (inference) viewरस की प्रतीति नहीं होती (शंकुक के प्रतीति-पक्ष पर प्रहार)
na utpadyatenor is it produced the strike against Lollaṭa's utpatti (production) viewन ही उत्पन्न होता है (लोल्लट के उत्पत्ति-पक्ष पर प्रहार)
na abhivyajyatenor is it manifested the strike against the abhivyakti (manifestation) viewन ही अभिव्यक्त होता है (अभिव्यक्तिवाद पर प्रहार)
bhaṭṭanāyakaḥ tu āha — but Bhaṭṭa Nāyaka says; rasaḥ na pratīyate — rasa is not cognized; na utpadyate — nor produced; na abhivyajyate — nor manifested.
Now Bhaṭṭa Nāyaka enters with a flat triple denial: rasa is not cognized, not produced, not manifested. In one stroke he rejects all three positions on the table — Śaṅkuka's 'rasa is inferred,' Lollaṭa's 'rasa is produced,' and the 'rasa is manifested' view. Something else entirely is going on, he says, and the rest of the passage argues for it.
This triple negation is the celebrated opening of Bhaṭṭa Nāyaka's bhukti-vāda. Each verb targets one rival: pratīti (Śaṅkuka), utpatti (Lollaṭa), abhivyakti (the manifestationists). His own answer — that rasa is bhoga, enjoyed through a special power called bhāvakatva — is built up across the atoms that follow.

svagatatvena hi pratītau karuṇe duḥkhitvaṁ syāt |
svagatatvena hi pratītaufor if rasa were cognized as one's own [feeling] locative absolute; hi 'for' opens the reasoning; svagatatvena = 'as belonging to oneself'क्योंकि यदि प्रतीति अपने में (अपने भाव के रूप में) मानकर हो
karuṇethen in the karuṇa (pathos) rasaकरुण रस में
duḥkhitvaṁ syātone would actually become miserableतो दुःखीपन ही होना चाहिए
svagatatvena hi pratītau — for if it were cognized as one's own; karuṇe — in the karuṇa rasa; duḥkhitvaṁ syāt — real grief would result.
Take the first horn. If rasa were cognized as your own feeling, then watching a tragedy would leave you genuinely grief-stricken — the karuṇa (pathos) rasa would just be misery. But we relish karuṇa; we do not flee the theatre in tears. So rasa cannot be a cognition of one's own state.
This is the first arm of Bhaṭṭa Nāyaka's dilemma: cognition must be either svagata (felt as one's own) or paragata (felt as another's). This atom disposes of the svagata arm; s5 takes the paragata arm.

na ca sā pratītiryuktā, sītāderavibhāvatvāt, svakāntāsmṛtyasaṁvedanāt, devatādau sādhāraṇīkaraṇāyogyatvāt, samudralaṅghanā*derasādhāraṇyāt |
na ca sā pratītiḥ yuktāand that cognition [as one's own] is not tenable either sā = the svagata-pratīti just raised; four ablatives of reason followऔर वह (स्वगत) प्रतीति उचित भी नहीं
sītādeḥ avibhāvatvātbecause Sītā and the like are not the spectator's own vibhāvas (stimulants of his feeling) ablative of reason; Sītā is Rāma's beloved, not the viewer'sक्योंकि सीता आदि (दर्शक के लिए) विभाव नहीं हैं
svakāntā-smṛti-asaṁvedanātbecause [seeing Sītā] no memory of one's own beloved is actually felt the viewer does not, in fact, recall his own wifeक्योंकि (दर्शक को) अपनी प्रिया की स्मृति का संवेदन नहीं होता
devatādau sādhāraṇīkaraṇa-ayogyatvātbecause with a divine figure and the like, universalization (sādhāraṇīkaraṇa) cannot get a grip a god like Rāma is too exalted to be felt as 'anyone's' objectक्योंकि राम आदि देवता में साधारणीकरण के योग्यता नहीं
samudralaṅghanādeḥ asādhāraṇyātand because leaping the ocean and such feats are too extraordinary to be shared in Hanumān's ocean-leap belongs to him alone; the viewer cannot make it his ownक्योंकि समुद्रलंघन आदि (हनुमान के ही होने से) असाधारण हैं
na ca sā pratītiḥ yuktā — that svagata cognition is untenable; sītādeḥ avibhāvatvāt — since Sītā etc. are not the viewer's stimulants; svakāntā-smṛti-asaṁvedanāt — since no memory of his own beloved is felt; devatādau sādhāraṇīkaraṇa-ayogyatvāt — since a deity resists universalization; samudralaṅghanādeḥ asādhāraṇyāt — since ocean-leaping and the like cannot be shared.
Four reasons the 'own-feeling' account fails. First, Sītā is not the spectator's stimulant — she is Rāma's beloved, not his. Second, seeing her, he does not in fact remember his own wife. Third, a divine hero like Rāma is too far above the viewer to become 'anyone's' object of feeling. Fourth, a feat like Hanumān leaping the ocean is uniquely his — the viewer cannot make it his own experience. In every case the object stays someone else's; it never becomes the viewer's own.
vibhāva = the determinant or stimulant that awakens a feeling (the beloved, the setting). sādhāraṇīkaraṇa = 'universalization,' the making-common by which a depicted feeling stops being tied to one person and becomes available to all — the concept Bhaṭṭa Nāyaka is here credited with introducing, and which he says a merely private cognition can never achieve.

And you cannot save it by memory of Rāma: the viewer never saw Rāma, so he cannot remember him. Nor will knowing Rāma by report or inference give a rasa-charged experience the way seeing would. Push it the other way and it is worse: suppose the loving couple really did appear before you as if in the flesh — then your own private reactions would flood in, embarrassment, disgust, longing — and rasa would have no room at all. Either way, cognition-as-one's-own collapses.
nāyaka-yugalaka = the hero-heroine pair. The point sharpens the sādhāraṇīkaraṇa argument: vivid private perception is precisely what destroys aesthetic relish, because it drags in the viewer's own everyday responses (lajjā shame, jugupsā disgust, spṛhā longing).

paragatatvena pratītauif instead rasa were cognized as belonging to another [the character] locative absolute; the second arm of the dilemma — paragata, 'located in someone else'जब प्रतीति दूसरे में (परगत रूप में) मानकर हो
tāṭasthyam eva bhavetthen only cold detachment would result eva: nothing but the stance of an uninvolved bystanderतब केवल तटस्थता ('eva' — उदासीन साक्षी का भाव) ही होगी
tatra pratītiḥ anubhava-smṛti-ādi-rūpāthere the cognition would be merely ordinary — of the form of direct experience, memory and the like such plain awareness is exactly what rasa is notवहाँ प्रतीति अनुभव-स्मृति आदि रूप वाली (साधारण जान) होगी
rasasya yuktāand so [such a cognition] is not fit to be rasa the sense carries a denial: this ordinary awareness cannot count as the tasting of rasaरस के लिए उचित नहीं (यह साधारण जान रस का आस्वाद नहीं मानी जा सकती)
paragatatvena pratītau — if cognized as another's; tāṭasthyam eva bhavet — only detachment results; tatra pratītiḥ anubhava-smṛti-ādi-rūpā — there the cognition is merely of the ordinary experience-or-memory type; rasasya [na] yuktā — and that will not do as rasa.
Now the other horn. Cognize the feeling as the character's — as belonging to someone else — and you become a cool bystander (tāṭasthya). What you then have is just ordinary awareness, the kind you have when you witness or recall another person's state. That is not the tasting of rasa. So both horns fail: felt as your own, it is real pain; felt as another's, it is mere detachment. Cognition, on either reading, cannot be rasa.
tāṭasthya = the standpoint of a neutral onlooker. This closes the svagata/paragata dilemma opened at s2: neither pole yields rasa, which is why Bhaṭṭa Nāyaka will locate rasa not in any cognition at all but in a distinct power, bhāvakatva.

utpattau api tulyam etat dūṣaṇam — the same fault hits production too; śakti-rūpatvena pūrvaṁ sthitasya — of what pre-exists as a latent power; paścāt abhivyaktau — when it is later manifested; viṣaya-arjana-tāratamya-āpattiḥ — a gradation in seizing its object is forced upon it.
The same objection sinks Lollaṭa's 'rasa is produced' too. And manifestation fares no better: if rasa already sits there as a hidden potency and is only revealed later, then — like a lamp lighting an object more or less brightly — its grasp of its object would come in degrees. Rasa would be had partially, by more and less. That is absurd. So 'manifested' fails as well.
śakti = latent power; abhivyakti = manifestation (a thing already existing being merely revealed, as a lamp reveals a pot). The tāratamya (gradation) objection is the classic pressure on any 'manifestation' model: what merely gets revealed can be revealed to varying degrees, but rasa is not tasted by degrees.

So here is his own account. Language, besides its plain naming-power (abhidhā), carries a second power he calls bhāvakatva — the evoking or aestheticizing power. In poetry it works through faultless diction, guṇas, and ornaments; in drama through the four kinds of acting. Its one job is sādhāraṇīkaraṇa: it universalizes the vibhāvas, prying the depicted feeling loose from any one person so it belongs to everyone, and thereby it bursts the tight cell of the viewer's private ego-delusion. Rasa, so evoked, is then not known, not produced, not unveiled — it is enjoyed. And this enjoyment (bhoga) is like nothing in ordinary life: driven by an interplay of rajas and tamas it melts, expands, and blossoms; and where sattva surges it becomes a restful, luminous, blissful resting in one's own consciousness — a savour standing right next door to the tasting of Brahman itself. That, says Bhaṭṭa Nāyaka, is what rasa is: something simply relished.
The heart of Bhaṭṭa Nāyaka's doctrine, his three-power scheme: abhidhā (denotation) delivers word and meaning; bhāvakatva / bhāvanā (the evoking power) universalizes the vibhāvas; bhoga / bhogīkṛti (the relishing power) is the enjoyment itself. druti (melting), vistāra (expansion), vikāsa (blossoming) map onto the three guṇas — tamas, rajas, sattva — with the sattva pole yielding viśrānti, a blissful rest of consciousness. parabrahma-āsvāda-savidha is deliberately cautious: rasa-bhoga is near to, not the same as, the tasting of Brahman. Note his chosen verb bhujyate ('is enjoyed'), set squarely against the three rejected verbs of s1.

abhidhā — denotation; bhāvanā ca anyā — and a distinct bhāvanā; tad-bhogīkṛtam eva ca — and that making-it-enjoyed.
Bhaṭṭa Nāyaka's own kārikās now name the three powers in a line: abhidhā, denotation; bhāvanā, the separate evoking power; and bhogīkṛti, the making-it-enjoyed.
Why cited: Bhaṭṭa Nāyaka's own verse, cited to fix his three-power scheme by name — abhidhā, bhāvanā, bhogīkṛti — the mechanism just laid out in s8.

śabda-artha-alaṅkṛtīnamely, word and meaning [together with their] ornaments — the pair denotation delivers dual: śabda and artha as the two ornamented things abhidhā hands overशब्द और अर्थ रूप दोनों अलंकृतियाँ (अभिधा जो दो अलंकृत वस्तुएँ सौंपती है)

eṣaḥ api śṛṅgāra-ādi-gaṇaḥthis whole group of rasas — śṛṅgāra and the rest the object bhāvanā works onयह शृंगार आदि गण भी (जिस पर भावना काम करती है)
hi yatfor, inasmuch as — hi 'for'; yat opens the reason completed in s11क्योंकि जो ('hi' कारण; 'yat' से आरम्भ कारण s11 में पूरा होता है)
śabda-artha-alaṅkṛtī abhidhā-dhāmatāṁ yāte tataḥ — once word, meaning and their ornaments have reached the seat of denotation, then; eṣaḥ api śṛṅgāra-ādi-gaṇaḥ hi bhāvanā-bhāvyaḥ yat — this group of śṛṅgāra and the rest is to be evoked by bhāvanā, since —.
The verses continue. Once denotation has done its part — handing over word, meaning, and their ornaments — the next stage begins: the whole company of rasas, śṛṅgāra and the rest, is not named but evoked, and evoking is the work of bhāvanā, the second power. The 'because' clause runs on into the next line.
Why cited: Continues the citation: shows the division of labour — abhidhā yields word-and-meaning, after which bhāvanā evokes the rasa-group, confirming bhāvanā/bhāvakatva as a power beyond mere denotation.

tad-bhogīkṛti-rūpeṇaby way of that making-it-enjoyed (bhogīkṛti) — the third powerउस भोगीकृति रूप से (तीसरी शक्ति द्वारा)
vyāpyateis pervaded, suffused through and throughव्याप्त कर दिया जाता है
siddhimān naraḥthe accomplished man — the ready-hearted, qualified spectator siddhimat: fit and prepared to receive the savourसिद्धिमान् मनुष्य (आस्वाद ग्रहण करने के योग्य और तैयार सहृदय)
siddhimān naraḥ — the accomplished spectator; tad-bhogīkṛti-rūpeṇa — through that making-it-enjoyed; vyāpyate — is wholly suffused.
And the close: through the third power, bhogīkṛti, the accomplished spectator is suffused through and through. So the sequence completes — denotation gives word and meaning, bhāvanā evokes the rasas, and bhogīkṛti floods the qualified viewer with enjoyment. That flooding, and not any cognizing or producing or unveiling, is rasa.
Why cited: Closes the citation: the third power, bhogīkṛti, suffuses the qualified spectator (siddhimān naraḥ) — completing Bhaṭṭa Nāyaka's three-power mechanism and grounding his thesis that rasa is bhoga (enjoyment), the doctrine Abhinava will answer in u05.
