atha — अब; uddiṣṭānāṁ vibhāgam — उद्दिष्ट पदार्थों का विभाग; sūcayati — सूचित करते हैं; saṅgraho yo mayā iti — 'संग्रहो यो मया' इस प्रतीक से।
Now, with the verse 'The summary I gave…', Bharata points ahead to the detailed division of the very things he had so far only listed.
अब (भरत) उद्दिष्ट (केवल नाम से गिनाए गए) पदार्थों का विभाग 'संग्रहो यो मया' इस पद से सूचित करते हैं।
'uddiṣṭa' (merely named) versus 'vibhāga' (spelled out) sets up the whole section: what was catalogued is now to be unfolded.
'उद्दिष्ट' (जो केवल नाम से गिनाया गया) और 'विभाग' (जो खोलकर बताया जाए) — यह भेद पूरे प्रकरण की भूमिका रखता है: जो सूचीबद्ध किया गया था, अब उसका विस्तार होना है।

tasya iti — the word 'its'; saṅgrahasya — [means] of the summary; saṅgrahaḥ eva vistāritaḥ vibhāgaḥ — the division is the summary itself expanded; iti arthaḥ — that is the sense.
tasya iti — 'तस्य' अर्थात; saṅgrahasya — संग्रह का; saṅgrahaḥ eva vistāritaḥ — संग्रह ही विस्तृत होकर; vibhāgaḥ — विभाग; iti arthaḥ — ऐसा अर्थ है।
'Its' means 'of the summary'. The point is simple: the division is nothing other than the same summary, now stretched out in full.
'तस्य' अर्थात संग्रह का। संग्रह ही जब विस्तृत हो जाता है तब वह विभाग कहलाता है — यही अर्थ है।

Is the whole task finished just by naming things? No. That is why he says 'with nirukti (saniruktam)' — he will carry the treatment through to a genuine critical examination, not halt at the bare names.
क्या उसे (नाम से) कह देने मात्र से सब कुछ पूर्ण हो गया? (नहीं) — 'सनिरुक्त' अर्थात परीक्षा (जाँच) तक पहुँचनेवाला, यही अर्थ है।

anta-vacanena avyayībhāvaḥ (?) — by the word 'end', an avyayībhāva; na ca alakṣitasya parīkṣā — and no examination of the undefined; iti sakārikam āha — so he says 'sakārikam'; kārikā-sampadā upetam — endowed with the wealth of kārikās; sampattau samāsaḥ — the compound in the sense of endowment.
anta-vacanena — 'अन्त' शब्द से; avyayībhāvaḥ — अव्ययीभाव समास (पाठ अनिश्चित); na ca alakṣitasya parīkṣā — और अलक्षित की परीक्षा नहीं; iti āha—sakārikam — यह कहकर 'सकारिक'; kārikā-sampadā upetam — कारिका-सम्पदा से युक्त; sampattau samāsaḥ — सहितता के अर्थ में समास।
The word 'up to the end' gives an avyayībhāva compound (the reading here is uncertain). And you cannot examine what has not first been defined — so he adds 'sakārikam', 'furnished with kārikās': the defining verses supply that definition. The prefix 'sa-' here compounds in the sense of 'endowed with'.
'अन्त' (पर्यन्त) शब्द से अव्ययीभाव समास बनता है (यहाँ पाठ अनिश्चित है)। और जिसका लक्षण न किया गया हो उसकी परीक्षा नहीं होती — इसीलिए 'सकारिक' कहा, अर्थात कारिका-रूपी सम्पदा से युक्त। यहाँ 'स' (सह) सहितता के अर्थ में समास है।
'na cālakṣitasya parīkṣā' — examination presupposes a prior lakṣaṇa (definition); hence nirukti (parīkṣā) needs kārikā (definition) as its ground, and both were promised in v14.
'न च अलक्षितस्य परीक्षा' — परीक्षा के पहले लक्षण (परिभाषा) का होना आवश्यक है; इसीलिए निरुक्ति (परीक्षा) को अपने आधार-रूप में कारिका (लक्षण) चाहिए, और v14 में दोनों की ही प्रतिज्ञा की गई है।

Here is what nāṭya really is. It is a represented object (artha): one that a still, wholly gathered mind fastens on, a mind for which the power of the actor's abhinaya has become direct perception; and one lit up by a particular poetic form — some member of the whole family of nāṭaka and the rest. That object is nāṭya.
वहाँ 'नाट्य' वह अर्थ (विषय) है, जो नट में स्थित अभिनय के प्रभाव से साक्षात्कार-सा प्रतीत होता हुआ, एकघन (अखण्ड) और निश्चल मानसिक निश्चय से ग्रहण किया जाता है, और जो नाटक आदि किसी एक काव्यविशेष के द्वारा प्रकाशित होता है।
Abhinava defines nāṭya not as the play or the acting but as the represented content (artha) grasped in a unified, absorbed act of mind — the ground for reducing it, next, to a single mental state and then to rasa.
अभिनवगुप्त 'नाट्य' को न तो नाटक और न अभिनय, अपितु उस प्रस्तुत अर्थ (विषय) के रूप में परिभाषित करते हैं जिसे एकघन, तल्लीन मानसिक क्रिया से ग्रहण किया जाता है — यही आगे उसे एक ही मानसिक अवस्था और फिर रस तक ले जाने का आधार बनता है।

Though nāṭya is built of endless vibhāvas and the rest, it still comes down to one thing. Every insentient element rests in consciousness; consciousness rests in the one who enjoys it; and the whole crowd of enjoyers rests in the principal enjoyer. So the true nature of nāṭya is the abiding mental state — the sthāyibhāva — of that one chief enjoyer, the hero.

Now trace what happens to that single abiding state once it is on the stage. It is set among hundreds of other states no longer felt as 'mine' or 'his'. It takes its very shape from the ten limbs of lāsya — worldly songs, sung verses and the like — and rests on a practised, beautiful garland of performance: poetry heightened by ornament, song and music. So lifted, it is dislodged from its ordinary footing, and thereby becomes generalized. It draws even the onlookers in, felt as the very being of their own selves. Through that identification it shines out quite unlike an everyday emotion — which is someone else's, held from outside by inference, scripture, yogic sight or plain perception. It no longer appears lodged in any one limited self. Unlike your own private love or grief, it cannot push you on into further reactions. And just because it is now grasped by an activity of unobstructed, self-aware, restful joy — an activity whose other name is rasanā, 'relishing' — it is called by the word rasa.
This is Abhinava's compressed statement of sādhāraṇīkaraṇa (generalization) and rasanā: the hero's sthāyibhāva, lifted onto the stage and generalized, is relished by the spectator in an act unlike any ordinary knowing, and that relished state is 'rasa'. Several words are corrupt in the manuscript (marked ?); the argument's spine, not every reading, is decoded here.

tathā ca — and thus; rasād ṛte iti atra (6-31) — in the verse 'apart from rasa…'; ekavacana-upapattiḥ — the use of the singular is warranted.
tathā ca — और इसी प्रकार; rasād ṛte iti atra — 'रसाद् ऋते' यहाँ; ekavacana-upapattiḥ — एकवचन की उपपत्ति।
This is also why the coming verse at 6-31 can say 'apart from rasa…' in the singular: since all of nāṭya reduces to the one rasa, the single number is exactly right.
और इसी से 'रसाद् ऋते' (नाट्यशास्त्र 6-31) इस स्थल पर (रस के) एकवचन-प्रयोग की उपपत्ति (सिद्धि) हो जाती है।
Why cited: Adduced to show that the singular 'rasa' at NS 6-31 is warranted — because, on the argument just made, nāṭya is essentially one rasa.
क्यों उद्धृत: यह इसलिए उद्धृत किया गया कि नाट्यशास्त्र 6-31 में 'रस' का एकवचन प्रयोग सिद्ध हो — क्योंकि अभी किए गए तर्क के अनुसार नाट्य मूलतः एक ही रस है।

From the one great rasa (mahārasa), which is primary, the separate rasas are set out as its parts. How exactly the parts stand to the whole is left open in three ways, each borrowed from a theory of how words make a sentence. On the sphoṭa view the parts are unreal — only the one whole is real. On the anvitābhidhāna (Prābhākara) view they are both real and not, real only as already bound into the whole. On the abhihitānvaya (Bhāṭṭa) view they are fully real, and the great rasa is just their aggregate. Abhinava lines up all three and picks none.
Three grammar-and-Mīmāṃsā theories of sentence-meaning are borrowed as models for how the many rasas relate to the one mahārasa. sphoṭa-vāda: the whole utterance is one indivisible burst, its supposed word-parts analytic fictions — so the individual rasas would be unreal, only the mahārasa real. anvitābhidhāna (Prābhākara): a word means only as already connected with others, so word-meanings are real-yet-not-independent — the rasas both real and merely partial. abhihitānvaya (Bhāṭṭa): words first mean separately, then those meanings combine, so the sentence is a genuine aggregate (samudāya) of real parts — the mahārasa an aggregate of real rasas. The mapping is only about the part-whole tie; it does not import the theories' other machinery, and the iva keeps each a viewpoint, not a verdict. The three vā-clauses stay suspended.

This puruṣārtha grid is Abhinava's rationale for the sequence, not stated by the mūla.

It was already said that rasa is savored when the spectator's own self enters in. But that relish only happens through the force of the vibhāvas and the other feeling-elements. So now Bharata must set out the bhāvas — which is why v16 turns to 'again I shall tell of the bhāvas.'

Abhinava gives his own answer: śānta's abiding feeling is nirveda born of the knowledge of truth — not mere despair, but the world-weariness that comes of seeing things as they are. And this is exactly why nirveda, though an inauspicious word to open with, is placed first in the list of transient feelings (v18): to signal that it works in both roles at once — as the abiding feeling of śānta and as a passing feeling elsewhere.
nirveda (world-weariness, disenchantment): in ordinary use a downcast, ill-omened state, which is why opening a list with it is amaṅgala. Here it is nirveda born of tattva-jñāna — the calm turning-away that follows real insight — which is why Abhinava can make it the sthāyin of śānta. Its heading the vyabhicārin list is read as a deliberate signal that one and the same feeling can be abiding in one place, transient in another.

A further camp observes that Bharata fixes no number for the sthāyibhāvas — unlike the thirty-three transient feelings and the eight sāttvika ones. And it is just because their count is left open that these same feelings, abiding in one setting, can also act as transient feelings in another.

Because they lean on both, Bharata counts them as a class of their own, apart from abhinaya and the rest. That is why v22 lists the eight sāttvikas on their own, even though sāttvika also stands as one of the four abhinayas in v23.
सात्त्विक भाव दो चीज़ों का सहारा लेते हैं — व्यभिचारी भावों की वृत्ति और अभिनय की वृत्ति। इसीलिए इन्हें अभिनय आदि से पृथक्, अपनी अलग गिनती में रखा गया है।
sāttvika-bhāvas: the eight involuntary bodily signs (paralysis, sweat, horripilation, and so on) that break out from genuine inner feeling (sattva). They straddle two families — they come and go like the vyabhicāri-bhāvas, yet they also enact the emotion outwardly, which is why 'sātvika' is named among the four abhinayas. Sharing both natures, they earn a separate tally.

By counting 'four' — and so folding āhārya in among them — Bharata quietly shows that even the āhārya (the costume-and-prop enactment: the bow, the mask or headpiece, the crown, and so on) is an integral limb of the drama, not an outside add-on. When these props are put to work to make something directly perceptible on stage, they belong to the inner life of the play. Then he moves to the next word, 'resting on nāṭya.'
'चत्वारः' (चार) कहकर वह यह जताता है कि आहार्य भी — धनुष, नकली सिर, मुकुट आदि — जब किसी वस्तु का साक्षात् दर्शन कराने में काम आता है, तब अन्तरंग (भीतरी अंग) बन जाता है। फिर 'नाट्यसंश्रयाः' पद लेता है।
antaraṅga ('inner limb') vs bahiraṅga ('outer limb'): the eyes' movement is antaraṅga — part of what the acting itself is; a stagehand carrying a lamp is bahiraṅga — outside the acting, only serving it. āhārya (props, costume) looks bahiraṅga, but Abhinavagupta says that on stage, used to make a thing directly perceived, it is antaraṅga — woven into the enactment itself.

nāṭye tu — but in drama; te eva jīvitam — those very enactments are its lifeblood; ata eva — for exactly this reason; rasa-bhāva-anantaram abhinayāḥ uddiṣṭāḥ — the enactments are set out right after the rasas and the bhāvas.
nāṭye tu — नाट्य में तो; te eva — वे ही; jīvitam — जीवन; ata eva — इसीलिए; rasa-bhāva-anantaram — रस-भाव के पश्चात्; abhinayāḥ — अभिनय; uddiṣṭāḥ — उद्दिष्ट किए गए।
But in drama it is the reverse: those four enactments are its very life — take them away and there is no play. That is precisely why Bharata sets out the abhinayas right here, immediately after the rasas and the bhāvas. So the unit closes: rasas, then bhāvas, then the enactments that carry them.
पर नाट्य में तो वे ही उसके प्राण हैं। इसीलिए रस और भाव के बाद ही अभिनयों का उद्देश (नामोल्लेख) किया गया।
