Now Rūpa defines the narma-garbha. Take some activity on stage — a bit of business done by the hero, or else by the heroine. It is undertaken to accomplish that character's own aim (svārtha). So far this line just sets up the piece of action; the next line adds the mark that makes it narma-garbha.

narma-garbha is a sandhy-aṅga — one of the named limbs (aṅga) that make up the junctures (sandhi) of a Sanskrit play. The name joins narma, 'love-jest, playful banter,' with garbha, 'held hidden within, as in a womb': the love-play is carried on under cover. netṛ ('leader') is the standard term for the nāyaka, the hero.
